Govt employs volunteer nurses as strike continues. According to health ministry spokesperson Donald Mujiri the Volunteer Nurse Leadership will kickoff today at Chinhoyi within Mashonaland West province as well as Masvingo provincial hospitals. The Zimbabwean Government that is under pressure to pacify striking nurses and doctors countrywide has launched a Volunteer Nurse program.
Chinhoyi provincial hospital built under late former president Robert Mugabe rule is one of the biggest nurses training centres under Chinhoyi School of Nurses. Mujiri posted public notices saying they will kick off recruitment today Monday at 10.00. is notice reads, “Volunteer Nurse Leadership will kick off in Chinhoyi and Masvingo provincial hospitals? The aim is to recruit voluntary nurses to assist our institutions during the strike by nurses”
The latest move by Government confirms the cold war between health professionals and their employer. as they have been agitated who has failed to give them better salaries that may cushion them against hyperinflation.
Of late, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe interbank rate has been eroded with costs of basic commodities trading at unprecedented levels daily. Although the Government offered a USD$75 for every civil servant for three months during COVID 19 crisis, some hospitals have seen patients turned away as nurses are on strike. This has compromised the health sector under the global spotlight after health minister Obadiah Moyo was arrested last week facing corruption charges running into millions of US dollars.
