A convict who was serving an 18 months jail sentence last Saturday escaped from Mutare Farm Prison.
Prison Officials confirmed the development, saying they had launched a manhunt for Luxson Mutumbu, 31, from Odzi.
Manicaland Region Prisons and Correctional Services spokesperson, Principal Prison Officer, Liberty Mhlanga, said Mutumbu escaped at around 0800hrs while working at the Piggery section.
“Mutumbu escaped whilst he and other prisoners were doing morning duties in the Piggery Section. He sneaked out while guards were focusing on others,” said Mhlanga.
Mutumbu was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with labor by Mutare magistrates’ courts on February 17 this year on house breaking and theft charges and was to be released on 16 February 2017.
Mhlanga said prison officers were deployed for a search after they noticed that Mutumbu was absent but failed to locate him.
“We are appealing members of the public who might have any information of his whereabouts to advice any nearest police station or prison offices,” said Mhlanga.
Another prisoner also escaped last year while working at Manicaland Agricultural Show grounds. He sneaked into Mozambique but later handed himself to the Prison authorities.
