Lockdown causes over 1 000 mineworkers to lose their jobs, more likely to be affected. ZDAMWU general secretary Justice Chinhema told NewZimbabwe.com that the jobs losses were attributable to the closure of global markets for minerals as most countries imposed lockdowns.

The Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union (ZDAMWU) said that the country’s mining sector has shed more than 1 000 jobs since the beginning of the coronavirus-induced lockdown in March. Chinhema said:

To date, over 1000 employees have lost their jobs since the beginning of lockdown and we are still compiling our lists. More workers in the mining sector are also expected to lose their jobs in the coming months, as mines are either scaling down operations or closing entirely.

Chinhema said ZDAMWU is proposing that the mining industry establish a fund that would cater to workers who have lost their jobs. Alternatively, the Ministry of social welfare should consider those redundant workers for food relief, Chinhema added.
