Juju in play: Man eaten alive by maggots after stepping on muthi that was planted at his gate. Maggots are even coming out of the leg. The 78-year-old madala from Ramotse in Hammanskraal, north of Tshwane, said his ordeal started in 2019 after he was injured while riding his bicycle.
Ezekiel Manyala has been living with a rotten leg for over two years. He said it was a minor scratch at first, but the bruise became a wound that wouldn’t heal. “I didn’t think much of it when I got injured because it always happened,” said Ezekiel. “But I started to think there could be something more to it when the bruise didn’t heal and it got more painful.”
He said he went to a traditional healer for help, but the bruise only got worse. The madala visited doctors and izangoma, but they all struggled to help. “One sangoma told me I stepped on muthi that was planted by my gate,” he said.
Madala Ezekiel said he believed them as this started after his glass business started doing well. But he hasn’t been able to work since the injury and his business died.
“In my dreams I’m able to walk and I’m not in pain. I yearn for that life again.” Madala’s daughter, Regina (35), said it pained her to see her father like this. “I wonder who could’ve done something this evil to my dad. I want him to get help before this kills him.”
Traditional healer Mahlasela Manganyi said the madala is bewitched and he can only be healed if there is a cleansing ritual at his house.
“He just needs what was planted in his home taken out. If he doesn’t take it out soon he’ll lose his leg,” he said. Medical doctor Nkosinathi Mabuza advised the madala to seek medical help soon. “He needs to have a test done to see if he doesn’t have any chronic illnesses such as cancer or diabetes,” he said.
