Harare celebrity hairdressers Craig Magengezha, involved in a US$70 000 forex deal. Craig runs Craig’s Studios in Avondale, Harare, which is an upmarket beauty salon of choice for some of the country’s leading socialites. One of Harare’s leading celebrity hairdressers, Craig Magengezha, is at the centre of a US$70 000 forex deal, whose controversy has been rumbling on for more than a year now.

He is also a regular member of the exclusive A-list parties, which are thrown by the country’s rich and famous, either at home or on foreign soil. Earlier this month, he attended the Mother-Of-All-Parties, which rocked Cape Town where helicopters, boat cruises and expensive champagne were the theme of the bash.

Craig stands accused of duping a construction company of a substantial amount of Zim dollars meant to buy US$70 000. It is alleged a leading company, which is involved in road construction projects, turned to Craig to help it source US$70 000, from the parallel market.

It could not be established this week if Craig is involved in securing foreign currency, especially on the parallel market, in such huge quantities. The deal was supposed to have been completed before the end of 2020 but, more than a year later, nothing has materialised.

“He just said he had given someone the money and that person has not delivered the US dollars,” sources revealed. “He got the money in 2020 and he has not met his part of the bargain. “He was given the Zim dollars to get the US dollars on the streets but while the local currency was provided, the foreign currency is somewhere but no one appears to know where right now.

“This has been going on since towards the end of 2020 and you can understand the disappointment, among some people, when they see him having the time of his life at such exclusive parties when this thing has been hanging on for more than a year now.”

H-Metro approached Craig for comment on the controversy and he said he was a victim in the transaction and the matter was now with the police.

“I was given a certain amount of money to get US dollars from money changers on the streets,” he said. “I then looked for a money changer to give me the cash but, after some days, the guy that I was dealing with told me that he had been robbed of the money.

“I then reported the case to Norton Police Station and, ever since then, the matter is still under investigation.” Earlier this month, Craig was one of the A-List guests at a mega party, which rocked the Mother City, in South Africa. Some rough estimates claimed the party could have cost more than US$200 000.

It was the second big party, hosted by a group of Zimbabweans, in a matter of weeks, in Cape Town. Earlier, a group of car dealers turned heads in the Mother City, when it held a birthday party for one of its members, known as “Boss Archie.”
