ZIFA referee dragged to court. Hardwork Mharira, who works at the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, appeared at the Harare Civil Court, where he was accused of not looking after his two children. A local referee was last Thursday dragged to court for child neglect.

Mharira and his wife Tafadzwa are going through a divorce, which is pending at the High Court. Tafadzwa told the court that since Mharira filed for divorce, he stopped buying groceries and paying for the children’s education.

“Hardwork is using the pending divorce to neglect me and his children.

“I am applying for maintenance, pending the hearing of the divorce, because the children cannot suffer because their parents are not in good books,” said Tafadzwa. She claimed Hardwork had other sources of income.

“He can’t say he doesn’t have enough money when he has other sources of income. “He is a ZIFA referee and gets allowances each time he handles a local match and this income does not reflect on his pay slip “ she added.

Mharira claimed Tafadzwa’s claim was baseless. “I can manage to pay $7 000 for now, pending the High Court decision,” he said. Magistrate Judith Taruvinga deferred the matter to next Thursday.
