Author Mmathabo Mooa, who became a pr0stitute when she was 15, has spoken about where she was now – years after she ran away from home and ended up being a magosha.

Mmathabo was a guest on SABC 3 reality show Unpacked with Relebogile Mabotja, where she said she had recovered from the life she lived.

Telling her life story, Mmathabo said she was raped by family members twice when she was nine and 11, and then ran away from home in Ga-Mphahlele in Polokwane, Limpopo, while in grade 9.

She said that she had stolen money from her dad because she was taking her anger out on him.

“When I arrived in Polokwane, that’s when I felt free. I didn’t have to worry about the outcomes of what I had done at home. I was practically homeless; I got off a bus and roamed the streets, then boarded a bus to Lebowakgomo.”

Her journey of exchanging s.e.x for shelter and food started immediately when she arrived.

“When I got to Lebowakgomo, that’s when it hit me that I was homeless. As I was roaming around, a guy picked me up and we hung out for drinks. It always ended with one thing – s.e.x. It wasn’t even about money at first. The following day, I would hit the road and they would go back to their own lives. It continued like that every day until I got tired,” she said.

Mmathabo added that she was finally found by the police almost a year later.

“Police told me to get dressed because I was going home, and asked what I was doing there. They pushed me, put me at the back of the van, and drove home. When I got home, my mum was not well. She had lost weight and was darker. She had a lot of unhappiness on her face,” she said.

Relebogile asked where she was now, to which she responded: “I think I’m at a much better place and since speaking out, I’m a lot free. Time does heal if you choose to heal; if you choose to move on and not bring the past into the present.”
