Bulawayo giants Highlanders edged bitter rivals Dynamos one-nil, to lift the Independence Cup at Babourfields Stadium in Bulawayo this Monday.

Played in front of a brimming Babourfields Stadium, the battle of Zimbabwe which ignited yesteryear memories had no goalmouth action to talk of in the first half.

Dynamos could have drawn first blood through a Ralph Kawondera header which missed the target by a few inches.

Moments later it was Keith Murera who failed to tap in a deflection off a dead ball situation.

The match swung in the Highlanders’ favour after the breather and it was no surprise, as Bosso took the lead ten minutes into the second half after the enterprising Washington Navaya made a fine run on the right side of the attack before setting up Stanley Ngala who scored with a perfect finish to send Highlanders fans into a frenzy.

Dynamos responded by making a double change bringing in Evans Katema for Emmanuel Paga and Ali Sadiki for Tinashe Makanda but the move failed to unlock the Highlanders’ defence.

The situation went from bad to worse for Dynamos after a moment of madness by midfielder Shadreck Nyahwa who hit Mbongeni Ndlovu with a Kungfu Kick on the head.

After the match, the two sets of players were presented with medals by Vice President, General Retired Dr Constantino Chiwenga before Highlanders lifted the coveted trophy to a cheering crowd.
