Nandipha Khubone (21) said she resonates with her character Sibongile. The actress from Durban, KZN shared that her character on Mzansi Magic’s Gomora made her aware of her mental health.

She wrote: “Today I had a really insightful day at work that made me aware of my mental health in a situation I haven’t dealt with head-on. And as racing as it was for my body, I would like to share.”

The actress said she can relate to what her character went through on this show. She said that during her days as a film student she was told that it was hard to remove yourself from the character’s body when you fully immerse yourself.

The actress said she experienced that with Sibongile. She is the daughter to Don, which was played by Israel Matseke Zulu, and now lives with her stepmother Zodwa, played by veteran actress Sannah Mchunu, on this show.

They live with Teddy, played by Sicelo Buthelezi who is Zodwa, and Don’s baby boy whom they are struggling to make ends meets but still survive with the little they get from cleaning people’s homes and selling alcohol at local bottle stores.

The actress said removing herself from Sibongile’s body has been harder than it usually was. This as the show entered a new season where she is dating an old man for iPhones and weaves.

Nandipha wrote that she would like to shield her from a world that didn’t serve her.

The actress said she broke down in the green room for few moments while she was getting into character. She said this was a sign that everything in life you wish for and asked God for he will always provide you with no matter how the situation feels like.

“The trials will mould you, even if you may not believe in them. In hindsight, I was participating with God in my miracles and it was more than it was worth it,” she said.

Nandipha said this character brought her closer to herself.
