Family, friends, and fans are mourning the loss of legendary gospel singer Deborah Fraser who passed away at Chris Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto on Sunday 15 May following a short illness.

The 57-year-old’s family has shared memorial and funeral details with the public, mentioning that there will be two memorial services in Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday 19 May, and Friday 20 May.

In the weeks leading up to her death, Deborah Fraser told TshisaLive that she fell ill while on the way to a gig in the North West. The Abanye Bayombona hitmaker added that she hoped after physiotherapy, she would get back on her feet.

I am performing still because there’s nothing wrong with my voice or hands, except there’s a headache that comes and goes,” she told the publication.

Plus, I cannot walk. Sometimes I wake up feeling as if I can’t think properly, as if I’m losing my mind. Otherwise, I can sit on my wheelchair and sing.”

Her family announced her passing on 15 May in a Facebook post.

According to SABC News, Deborah Fraser will be remembered at a memorial service in Johannesburg on Thursday 19 May at 13:00. A second memorial will be held in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday 20 May.

The talented singer will be laid to rest on Saturday 21 May in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal.

Fraser was born in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal before finding her voice as a backup vocalist in Johannesburg. She sang for the likes of Hugh Masekela, Rebecca Malope, and Jonas Gwangwa.
