Police in Mashonaland Central have arrested a 22-year-old Bindura woman who attempted to kill herself by setting her bedroom hut ablaze after dumping her 1 year 1-month-old baby in a mining pit.

Deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Naison Dhliwayo confirmed the case yesterday.

“I can confirm that we arrested Elizabeth Gomo of Sirevo farm Matepatepa in Bindura for exposing her infant daughter by dumping her in a 3 meter deep mining pit over numerous domestic disputes with her husband, ” Dhliwayo said.

The matter came to light after Lazarus Foya discovered the crying baby whilst gardening.

He filed a police report and Gomo was arrested after setting her house on fire in an attempt to commit suicide the next day while the baby was placed into the custody of the social welfare department.

Police are urging members of the public to seek counselling when they are having problems.

“We urge members of the public not to resort to suicide when faced with social, financial or psychological challenges but instead they should seek counselling. Suicide and baby dumping are not a solution but a creation of other problems. Members of the public are warned against exposing infants which is not only criminal but an act of cruelty,” Dhliwayo said.
