The government has come up with a programme to rehabilitate schools countrywide as part of ensuring communities have access to quality education.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Dr Sylvia Utete Masango who was on a tour of schools to benefit from the Schools Infrastructural Development Programme in Chikomba district said the government is committed to ensuring all communities have functional schools which are user friendly.
Dr Utete-Masango told stakeholders at Muteveri Primary School which is one of the beneficiaries that the province has identified 143 schools which are in need of rehabilitation.
“As government we did an infrastructural audit and realised that a lot of schools need rehabilitation. In Mashonaland East alone we have a total of 143 schools which need urgent rehabilitation” she said.
Muteveri Primary School will be relocated to a new site as the buildings at the current location are old and no longer safe for pupils and teachers.
Dr Utete-Masango also toured Makumimavi Primary School in Chivhu which is being constructed under the OFID Programme.
The government under its schools rehabilitation programme is constructing an administration block, classroom blocks, teachers’ houses, ablution facilities, library, science lab and ECD blocks.
