Zimbabwe and China have started implementing objectives of a $1,2 billion tourism investment deal aimed at increasing projects within the country’s tourism and hospitality sector.

The deal is expected to increase cooperation between the two countries.

While follow ups to the deal have seen both parties engaging each other at the Zimbabwe -China Business Forum in May with a Chinese technical team also visiting the country in July, another Chinese team made up of marketing and media experts has arrived in the country to market and promote local tourist projects and resources in China.

The Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Prisca Mupfumira said during a courtesy call by the visiting Chinese media personnel in Harare on Wednesday, the promotion of local tourist attractions will enable Chinese investors to visualise the scope of local tourism investments as well as capital of funds required.

“We are confident that they will do the best to their ability and promote tourism across China as we seek to enhance our ability to kick-start several projects in the country,” she said.

Zimbabwe’s tourism sector is on a recovery path with official data showing that the country received 2,4 million tourist arrivals in 2017, which represents a 12 percent increase from the 2,1 million tourists received in 2016.
