The annual Hwange sports gala saw over 500 members of the community taking part in 14 sports codes where the games were described as a unifier key for socio-economic development.
The coal mining town of Hwange holds a special place in the country’s sport development having produced players for various sports codes locally and nationally.
Hwange Colliery Company Limited Acting Managing Director, Engineer Shepherd Manamike says events such as the annual sports gala are part of the company’s social responsibility thrust and they help unearth talent.
“This ladies and gentlemen is testimony to our commitment towards the socio-economic empowerment to local youths through sport. It is very symbolic to have such milestones as Hwange Colliery Company is going through a transformation and turn around which has already set the company on a path of recovery,” said Engineer Manamike.
Event sponsors representative Mr David Muchakagara said it is gratifying that new sport codes namely boxing, volleyball, chess and pool were added thus growing the gala and unifying a community that witnessed the 1972 Kamandama Disaster which claimed 427 miners.
“The leadership of Hwange Colliery chose sport as a tool to commemorate the Hwange mining disaster. Sport is a universal unifier. It brings people from different walks of life, different cultures and beliefs to work as a team with common goals. The fun and entertainment that comes with sport enables us to forget about our daily hustles of life,” Mr Muchakagara said.
During the same evening, winners of different categories were awarded various prizes at a colourful prize giving ceremony.
