Senior Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) officers have partnered business executives to support the government in its quest to fight cholera through a $200 000 donation of cash and consumables.
With 35 recorded deaths and more than 8000 suspected cases recorded to date, the cholera outbreak has touched many hearts.
This Tuesday, senior ZDF officers and business executives who are members of the Executive Interaction Initiative handed over a consignment of assorted essentials to be used by staff and patients at cholera treatment centres and during outreach programmes.
ZDF Commander, General Philip Valerio Sibanda said so far the association has raised $60 000 in cash and $140 000 worth of essential resources towards the fight against cholera.
Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the ZDF headquarters in Harare, General Sibanda commended corporates that have shown empathy with those affected.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Gerald Gwinji, who received the funds and the consignment, said the number of suspected cholera cases as of yesterday (Monday) were at 8574.
Dr Gwinji paid tribute to private and public companies that have responded positively to the cholera crisis.
Some of the essential resources include 2 million litres of water, hand sanitisers, dettol and chlorine tablets, gum boots, gloves and buckets, among others.
General Sibanda also said Masawara group of companies will be handing over an industrial washing machine to Beatrice Road Infectious Diseases Hospital this Wednesday.
Thousands of people have presented to clinics and hospitals with diarrheal symptoms since the cholera outbreak early this month and health workers have been on the ground raising awareness on the need to visit the hospital as soon as one exhibits cholera symptoms.
