Bafana Bafana moved top of Group E after thumping Seychelles 6-0 in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the FNB Stadium.
As early as the sixth minute, Aubrey Modiba had a chance to open the scoring for Bafana after being picked out by Ramahlwe Mphahlele inside the box, but his header sailed over the bar, while Percy Tau nodded over from a similar position minutes later.
Tau came close to grabbing the lead for Stuart Baxter’s charges in the 14th minute with a free-kick from just outside the box that crashed against the crossbar.
After spells of domination, Bafana finally went ahead on 23 minutes when defender Nigel Hoareau headed into his own net, following some good work by Hlatshwayo.
Thulani Hlatshwayo made it 2-0 for Baxter’s men two minutes later with a brilliant header inside the box following a corner from Aubrey Modiba.
Lebogang Mothiba got the third goal for Bafana three minutes before half-an-hour with a curling strike that found the top corner, after some impressive play by Lebogang Maboe.
Seychelles were not offering anything going forward and Bafana had chances to add more goals to their tally, but Barra ensured the score remained 3-0 at the halftime break.
Tau should have made it 4-0 eight minutes into the second stanza after going through inside the box but his strike was saved by Barra in a one-on-one situation.
Gavin Jeanne’s troops were coming out of their defensive shell after 65 minutes, giving a much better showing than in the first stanza, although chances were hard to come by.
Modiba nearly got a fourth goal for Bafana 20 minutes before time with a low strike, but Barra made the save with a trailing leg. The SuperSport United man was replaced by Dino Ndlovu moments later.
Tau did make it 4-0 for the hosts in the 74th minute by rounding the goalkeeper at the near post to score into an empty net following a delicate through ball from Mothiba inside the box.
Ndlovu got the fifth goal for Bafana ten minutes before time with a low strike past Barra inside the box following a through ball from Maboe.
Teboho Mokoena rounded off the scoring with the final moment of the game, as the SuperSport man rose well to head home Hlanti’s cross into the bottom corner.
