Harare City Council is set to install traffic monitoring cameras across all busy intersections in the capital as part of efforts to control crime in the central business district.
Following a successful vendor blackout campaign in the capital, the Harare City Council has hinted that it will soon embark on another similar campaign to decongest the CBD by installing street monitoring cameras to clamp down unregistered pirate taxis and commuter omnibuses that are causing commotion disturbing motorists and pedestrians.
Harare City Council public relations manager Mr Michael Chideme said over 600 cars have so far been impounded and further warned traffic offenders that heavy penalties will be imposed upon those found guilty.
He further advised the public to preserve the infrastructure as it is set to enhance compliance with the law adding that the surveillance cameras are a joint project between council and Easy Park.
