Vice President Kembo Mohadi has called on the United Nations to consider African member countries to be among permanent members with veto power as the continent is the only one without representation.
Speaking at the UN 73rd anniversary celebrations held in the capital today Vice President Mohadi challenged the United Nations to transform and award Africa fair representation in the decision-making board.
“Africa will continue to demand for its rightful place in the council as enunciated in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration. It is unacceptable that this continent continues to be the only one without representation among permanent members with veto power,” he said.
Commenting on the socio-economic political situation in the country, Vice President Mohadi said government is committed to improved human rights preservation and promotion of democracy in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s 2030 middle invoice economy vision.
“Efforts will be made to continue entrenching constitutionalism, democracy, good governance, peace, harmony and tranquility. We believe that it is under such conditions that sustainable development, inclusive economic growth and prosperity as well as better life and freedom can be achieved,” said the Vice President.
Speaking at the same event, UN resident coordinator Mr Bishow Parajuli said his organisation is committed towards supporting government’s vision and the attainment of the globally declared sustainable development goals.
“The ambitions of vision 2030 require that all of us play our part and are allowed to play our part. I hereby commit that the United Nations will continue to accompany the people and government of Zimbabwe throughout the journey towards achievement of vision 2030,” he said.
The UN have always supported government initiatives with the latest being a donation of $3 million towards the fight against the cholera epidemic.
This year’s celebrations were held under the localised theme; “Achieving SDGs for Better Life in Freedom” and was attended by senior government officials and various civic organisations.
