The First Lady, Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa says the inclusion of the rural populace in empowerment programmes is key in transforming the socio-economic status of all the marginalized communities.

This came out at a stakeholder meeting on empowerment programmes for chiefs’ wives held in Harare today.

Chiefs play an important role in building bridges between the government and people who live in rural areas.

It is against this background that the First Lady initiated a comprehensive socio- economic programme targeting people living in rural areas.

The programme will see capacity building of chiefs’ wives who will then cascade the programme to their communities.

The chiefs welcomed the initiative, saying the programme will have a positive impact on the socio-economic sphere of citizens.

Stakeholders that include the business community, the United Nations (UN), women and government ministries pledged their support to the success of the programme.

The programme will see identification of potential projects, financial literacy training, counseling and women’s rights awareness.

Section 14 of the constitution mandates the government and its institutions to take measures to empower its citizens and this programme will go a long way in fulfilling the constitution requirements.
