A Harare magistrate yesterday told a maintenance claimant that it is illegal for school teachers to conduct extra lessons.

Harare Civil Court magistrate Ms Yeukai Dzuda said this yesterday while presiding over a maintenance case between Christina Mutowino and her ex-lover, Alexio Matare.

Responding to Mutowino’s demands for maintenance money for extra lessons for her three minor children, Ms Dzuda told her that she could not claim for that money since extra lessons are illegal.

“You cannot claim for money to be used for extra lessons. That is illegal and therefore you have to drop that…,” she said.

Mwemezi-rural“I want $215 per month for the upkeep of my three minor children. I am a vendor realising a little over $40 the whole month and I want this man’s hand in taking care of the minor children.

He is well-positioned to raise that amount every month. He earns $273 per month and has no other wife nor any minor child to look after,” Mutowino said.

Matare offered to pay $80 per month for the three children saying he had other responsibilities.

Ms Dzuda ordered him to pay $150 per month for the upkeep of the three minors starting May 30.

In another case, a Hatfield Police Station-based police officer, Maxwell Tsikira, who did not turn up for ruling will pay $200 per month for the upkeep of his four children he sired with Melania Tsikira.

Melania, a security guard, was claiming $500 for the four children saying Maxwell had ditched his family.

“Maxwell has dumped his family and is now living with another woman who is a work colleague . . .”, she said.
