Nelson Chamisa rips into ED and Mthuli Ncube over 2.5% civil tax. MDC President Nelson Chamisa has described the new 2.5% tax introduced on civil servants’ salaries as illegal as there was no law passed to approve the unpopular levy.
Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube Wednesday announced the government would be deducting 2.5% from every civil servant’s pay in what he called a new loans-centred initiative to protect the public servants from loan sharks.
However, on Thursday, Chamisa, in a keynote address during the launch of an MDC election policy document, at the Sapes Trust in Harare, felt the move was illegal.
“Civil servants have no money! I see now that there is a new tax that has been imposed. And you don’t know where they (Government) come from. ED (President Emmerson Mnangagwa) and Mthuli, which planet do you live?” Chamisa said.
“You have not gone to Parliament, there is no law. Even those that run a tuck-shop have the decency of consulting. To say, ‘How are we going to run this tuck-shop’. What kind of leadership is this!
“I am now beginning to believe that (Robert) Mugabe was right when he said; ‘I don’t have a successor’. He was right. We used to think he was lying until we saw his successor (Mnangagwa). We now know that he was right,” said Chamisa.
