The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has descendent on Chiredzi where they are investigating the abduction in May last year of a trade union activist who went missing until he allegedly emerged from Zambia.

Kariborn Nyemba was allegedly abducted by an army captain and a Police Detective Inspector both based in Chiredzi but allegedly escaped from the abduction and sneaked into Zambia where he returned from a few weeks ago. He is understood to be staying in a safe house somewhere in the country. ZHRC chairman, Elasto Mugwadi confirmed the investigations.

He said commissioners visited Chiredzi last week and recorded statements from the people suspected to have abducted Nyemba. They also spoke to all who may have had information on what transpired including workmates and close relatives of Nyemba.

One of the suspects who is a commissioned officer in the army has since been subpoenaed to appear in Harare for statements after the Commission failed to meet him in Chiredzi.

I am aware of that case but right now I am driving from Chiredzi where we were making some investigations concerning the abduction of one person. We managed to interview a number of people but failed to meet some whom we have subpoenaed to appear before us in Harare.

“I am not privileged to give you information on the names as of now. I think that the docket should be ready by Friday next week” said Mugwadi.

Former Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Industry Workers’ Union president Simbarashe Nyemba who is young brother to Kariborn said he was visited by the commissioners at his workplace in Hippo Valley and he told them what he knew about the abduction.

They also interviewed former ZISMIWU secretary general Addmore Hwarare.
