Report: Government diverts mealie meal to the black market. Political analysts who spoke to this reporter said the suspension of the Grain Marketing Board Bulawayo depot manager proved that the leakage was happening inside the government.

The government of Zimbabwe has been accused of channelling mealie meal through the Grain Marketing Board. On Thursday the state-owned Chronicle reported that GMB has suspended the Belmont depot manager in Bulawayo together with his four subordinates for allegedly diverting subsidized mealie and other silo foods industries products to the black market.

The paper said the depot manager, Mr Stanley Chimakira, was allegedly working with his sidekicks in the sales department, Mr Buhle Dube and Mr Vincent Gwariro, in channelling the Government-subsided roller meal to the black market.

In an interview with this reporter, Southern Stars Foundation acting Director Ndodana Moyo said, “The recent revelations by the maize committee show that the government workers are involved in the rot at GMB. You cannot have people that are entrusted with supplying mealie meal in the value chain being the ones that are involved in sabotaging the economy.

“These revelations come a week after the parliamentary committee led by Justice Wadyajena blamed private sector and GMAZ for black market activities, while it was government through GMB who are guilty of sending roller meal to the black market. As civic society and as citizens of Bulawayo we are urging the Government to put its house in order before all hell breaks loose. It does not take us a second to show the government that we are hungry and agitated. The rot at GMB must end.”

There have been allegations that some ZANU PF members are plotting to remove President Emmerson Mnangagwa through food riots caused by the unavailability of maize meal.
