Zimbabwe too hot for Coronavirus but still avoid gatherings. Large crowds and unhygienic environment have been discouraged amid concerns over COVID-19. no COVID-19 in Zimbabwe but large crowds are not wise to be at this moment in time. Says government.
Latest suspected candidates from Mutare, Dubai, Thailand, Italy and Bahrain have tested negative. Dr Prosper Chonzi confirmed to H-Metro that five COVID-19 examinees have been identified and tested negative.
“We have patients whom we have identified, a Chinese national from Mutare, one in Masvingo from Dubai, and then the other from Italy, Thailand and Bahrain. “I can confirm that they have all been tested negative.
“We have to up our game as a country because more and more could be coming. “The disease can come anytime and this is a worry,” said Dr Chonzi. Asked on the preparedness and capacity of Wilkins Infectious Diseases Hospital amid the potential outbreak, Dr Chonzi said:
“The facility can never be enough, it can never be 100 per cent but we are working towards the goal. “We can always be vigilant and assess the facility, the processes and all that matters.
“We want to manage the facility very well.” Dr Chonzi took time to caution the public over the spread of the virus following stringent measures being taken in most vulnerable European and Asian countries.
“We might not be at that stage which we would raise such an alarm but we can discourage unnecessary large crowds in public places. “This is because the disease is spread where people are crowded. “Someone infected can spit or cough on a surface and whoever comes in contact is affected.
“Prevention, and controlling personal hygiene is a must and coughing on a tissue, not touching surfaces and a clean environment are such measures which the public can adhere to.
“A crowded environment is risky and so is a dirty environment,” explained Dr Chonzi.
The City Health Director also spoke on the possibility of the virus spreading into the country regarding the weather conditions. “We have high temperatures here in Zimbabwe and this is an added advantage for us.
“The COVID-19 cannot survive above 25 degrees and this could be a factor. “We are now approaching winter season and this is the more reason we should be well prepared,” added Dr Chonzi.
