Two-storey design for Gwanzura Stadium. The council-run stadium had been neglected for years. Harare City Council faces space restrictions as they plan to revamp Gwanzura Stadium to meet international standards.
And in efforts to upgrade the facility, HCC Director of Housing and Social Development Addmore Nhekairo said they have a long term plan for their facilities in Harare. “We have plans to make the Gwanzura meet international standards so that our local teams host big matches there,” he said.
Nhekairo, however, bemoaned the issue of space at Gwanzura saying they will have to resort to a two-storey building. He said they are required to build huge changing rooms, doping rooms, first aid rooms and press conference room among other requirements.
“There are a number of things that needs to be done, for example at Gwanzura and it means we have to build a two-story building because the space is not enough,” said Nhekairo. While hopes were raised that the stadiums would be ready for the 2020 local Premiership season, Nhekairo said it can only be usable in the second half of the season.
Nhekairo made the revelations appearing before the portfolio committee on Youth, Sports, Arts and Reaction in Harare last week. Gwanzura was closed in 2016 and is currently under renovations. H-Metro visited the stadium located in Highfield last week and there has been notable progress in as far as renovations are concerned.
