Controversial Pastor T Chiwenga in hot soup again. Outspoken and controversial Zimbabwean preacher Talent Chiwenga appeared at Mutare Magistrates’ court facing smuggling charges on Tuesday, iHarare has established through the Zimmorningpost.
The cleric appeared before Mutare magistrate Nottbulgar Muchineripi who remanded him out of custody on ZWL 400 bail. The court heard that the motor-mouthed cleric was arrested after allegedly trying to defraud the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) when he entered the country from Mozambique.
Chiwenga is reported to have tried to manoeuvre past a Zimra official without declaring the goods he was allegedly in possession of. The court heard that after completing immigration papers, the cleric passed through the customs and clearing counter without declaring his goods.
A Zimra official then ordered him to take his goods for scanning, where it was discovered that he had not declared the goods. This then led to his subsequent arrest.
The incident occurred on December 11, 2019, at Forbes Border Post. The accused was in the company of Lovemore Kanyuru and Darlington Moyo. The goods not declared include five Kenwood two-way communication radios, solar battery chargers and teargas injectors, among others.
The value of the goods was not mentioned in court papers. Chiwenga’s lawyer, Advocate Tariro Paul Machiridza, said: ‘We have made our initial appearance before the court on the said preferred charges. My client has been granted bail with the ensuing usual conditions. We shall be back in court in the near future for the trial.’
Perseverance Musukuto prosecuted the case.
