COVID 19 Update: University students left stranded on the road as private cars refuse hikers. There are reports that over 100 Great Zimbabwe University students found themselves stranded on the road after school closure yesterday.
According to a post on Twitter, the students were stuck as they waited for transport to ferry them home. The buses doubled up their prices and somewhere demanding US dollars. Private cars were also not taking in students in fear or the coronavirus. Most of the students had to return to the school premises as a result.
Meanwhile, in another news, the hunter became the hunted, when a Bulawayo socialite who was allegedly robbed of nearly US$76 000 and 168 grammes of gold at gunpoint by a gang of 4 unidentified thugs was arrested while making a report at Kumalo Police Station.
Mike Marata (38) was arrested for possessing gold without a license. He allegedly went to the police station to report the robbery, leading the police officers to ask him to produce a licence permitting him to possess gold.
When Marata failed to produce the license he was arrested instead. He was asked not to plead to charges pertaining to the possession of gold without a license when he appeared in court. Marata was remanded to April 7 on his own cognisance.
According to the state’s evidence on Friday last week at around 1PM in the afternoon, Marata went to Kumalo Police Station where he reported a case of armed robbery. “The accused person alleged that he had been robbed of US$75 545 and 168 grammes of gold by four unknown men. He said the money which was in the car was for buying more gold and the stolen gold had just been bought from one Stanley Mhembere,” he said.
The court heard that Marata was asked to produce a licence authorising him to possess gold but he did not have any and he was immediately arrested on site.
