Video of Zimbabweans crossing Limpopo river illegally smuggling beer from Beitbridge to SA. At first it started as rumours that People were smuggling beer from Zimbabwe to South Africa, but now with this video, it is quite clear that it is really happening, alcohol is being smuggled from Beitbridge to Limpopo.
This comes after South Africa banned the sell of alcohol in their national lockdown as they try to fight and control the COVID-19 pandemic. South African citizens did not welcome this move and those in Limpopo resorted to violate the ban and cross Limpopo River to come and get the liquor from the Zimbabwean side. Zimbabwe is on lockdown as well but in their lockdown, they did not ban the sale of alcohol. Hence why South Africans are crossing the bridge to come and get the alcohol.
“Some people from Beitbridge town have also been coming with the beer they trade as barter with groceries. Security officials deployed to stop border jumping were allegedly cashing in on the business and paying no attention to the risk of the spread of the COVID-19 disease. “They charge varying amounts for goods being smuggled and at times R15 per carton of any grocery.”
The Beer Association of South Africa, as well as other alcohol associations, have been making submissions to President Cyril Ramaphosa to allow the sale of alcohol during the lockdown, saying the closure of their businesses would create unemployment.
In reaction to alcohol sales ban, beer businesses and depots have been looted. Other South Africans have also resorted to homebrews sold out of pure desperation.
“Liquor stores, pubs, clubs and taverns have all been closed. On top of that horrific news, President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday, April 9, announced an extension of a further two weeks,” an official of one of the associations said.
The video has since gone viral on social media. The people whom we believe to be Zimbabweans are seen crossing the Limpopo river carrying cases and cardboard boxes of alcohol. Some are even using boats to help cross the beer from Zimbabwe to South AfricaCheck it below…
