Zim closes reproductive health facilities due to COVID-19 which might lead to a spike in unwanted pregnancies. This was revealed by International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) which said since the lockdown started, at least 100 facilities closed down in many countries including Zimbabwe. Said (IPPF).
Zimbabwe reportedly closed reproduction health families during the COVID-19 lockdown a move that might lead in the resurgence of unwanted pregnancies during the lockdown, Newsday reports.
Countries, particularly affected by closures include Pakistan, El Salvador, Zambia, Sudan, Colombia, Malaysia, Uganda, Ghana, Germany, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
All have reported more than 100 closures of clinics and or community-based service outlets. Dozens of IPPF’s members say they have been forced to cut s.e.xual and reproductive healthcare services as a result of COVID 19 restrictions.
Globally, the unmet need for contraception remains too high. It is estimated that 214 million women and girls are not using modern contraception despite wanting to avoid pregnancy. And this was before the COVID-19 pandemic, which is derailing access to contraception.
Zimbabwe has extended the lockdown indefinitely and it has recorded 42 positive cases so far.
