Chalton Hwende dismisses MDC talks. Hwende said the report about the purported talks are not true and were “planted” by MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora. MDC Alliance Secretary-general Chalton Hwende has dismissed reports claiming that his party is in talks with the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe.
Hwende tweeted: Mwonzora group must stop planting useless stories about talks. There are no talks going on. By working with ZANU PF to destroy the People’s Project they made a choice and they must live with it. There is no time to waste discussing anything with ZANU-PF Lite.
A Daily News report over the weekend said Mwonzora confirmed that some “engagements” were taking place between the parties. He was quoted as having said: Yes, we have had some engagements, but I cannot disclose much. We are determined to have unity in the party and we want everyone to attend the extraordinary congress.
The publication also reported that Hwende on Saturday confirmed that the Khupe camp had approached the Alliance with a proposal for a pact. Hwende reportedly said:
They sent some emissaries and when they came up with their proposal we rejected it. We rejected their proposals because they acknowledged that Chamisa is popular and should be the president of the MDC. They wanted to poach our president and we shot that down.
According to the Daily News, the deal that has been put on the table includes Chamisa being elected as the undisputed new party leader — deputised by Khupe and Komichi, and Mwonzora retaining the secretary-general’s post.
