Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk signs deal until 2025

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk signs deal until 2025. The 30-year-old, who was under contract until 2023, follows Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Alisson in signing new deals with the club this summer. Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has extended his contract with the club until the summer of 2025.

He played just five league games last season, as he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October. Van Dijk, who resumed playing in pre-season, said he was “delighted, very happy and proud” to sign a new deal.

“Where I am today, how I feel today, as a very senior, important player for the team and for the club,” added the Netherlands centre-back, who has made 130 appearances for Liverpool. “That’s just a fantastic feeling and why I definitely feel at home here.”

Manager Jurgen Klopp said: “Imagine if we had to buy this boy now. Thank God we only had to give him a new contract.” Liverpool’s only summer signing remains central defender Ibrahima Konate, bought from RB Leipzig for £36m.

The club has focused resources on securing the future of key first-team names, while rivals Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have spent significantly more on new attacking players.

“We cannot spend money we don’t have,” said Klopp. Asked if he was surprised other clubs were spending heavily despite the disruption the pandemic has caused, Klopp said: “I’m not surprised because these clubs don’t depend on this kind of thing, I think.

“We all know the situations at Chelsea, City, Paris St-Germain. What’s happening at Manchester United, I don’t know – I don’t know how they do it. “I’m never surprised about the financial power of City, Chelsea or United. I’ve been in the country long enough to know they always find a solution to do these things.

“You cannot compare to the other clubs, they obviously don’t have any limits but we have limits and we were quite successful given the limits in the last two years.”

He added: “For us, it’s our way. We keep the team together, that’s important as well. “I know it’s not as exciting as signing new players. People think that if you don’t sign, you don’t work – that’s not the case.

“I know it’s not as exciting, but if you’re a real Liverpool fan you’re excited about the news the club delivered in the last few weeks.”

Did you know?
Since Van Dijk joined Liverpool in January 2018, he has won 72 of his 95 Premier League games. The win rate of 76% is the best of any player to make 80 or more appearances in the league over the same period.

‘I’m ready for the weekend’
Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75m in January 2018, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most influential defenders, playing every domestic minute as the Reds won the title in 2019-20.

His injury early in the 2020-21 campaign was a significant moment in the club’s season, with their defensive resources also stretched by injuries to Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Van Dijk subsequently chose not to play for the Netherlands at the delayed European Championship this summer in order to focus on his rehabilitation. He has made three pre-season appearances and says his recovery from “a season to forget” has been “going well”.

“I feel good,” added Van Dijk, who could feature in Liverpool’s season opener at Norwich on Saturday. “Friendlies, you get your match fitness up, get into repetitions of doing things again and again.

“I feel like I am ready for the weekend, so we’ll see what the manager decides. It is going to be a totally different atmosphere and mindset for me personally as well.”

Man City’s Kevin de Bruyne set to miss the Premier League opener. Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne is likely to miss defending champions Manchester City’s Premier League opener against Tottenham on Sunday.

De Bruyne, 30, is yet to return to full training due to an ankle injury he sustained while playing at Euro 2020.

“He’s getting better every day but we’re still waiting,” City manager Pep Guardiola said.

“He cannot do the full training sessions. We will see what happens in the next days.” De Bruyne won the Professional Footballers’ Association men’s Players’ Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season last term, as City claimed a third Premier League title in four years.

Team-mate Phil Foden, who won the PFA Young Player of the Year award, will also miss the start of City’s title defence with a foot injury.

Lukaku’s agent threatened over Chelsea move from Inter Milan

Lukaku’s agent threatened over Chelsea move from Inter Milan. Lukaku, 28, left Inter Milan after helping the club end its 11-year wait for a 19th Italian title. Pastorello says talk the deal was “engineered” or “forced” for financial gain “is leading everyone astray”.

Romelu Lukaku’s agent, Federico Pastorello, says he and his family received threats while he was working on the striker’s £97.5m Chelsea move. “Many of those who today insult me and threaten me, thanked me wholeheartedly for bringing him to Milan,” he said.

“I have always accepted – and will continue to do so – confrontation and constructive criticism: they are part of the game for those who play a role with considerable media relevance.

“What we absolutely cannot tolerate are the falsehoods, insinuations, insults and threats we have received [also against my family and my daughters], which have far exceeded the limits of civilisation, decency and tolerance.” Lukaku scored 64 goals in 95 appearance in his two seasons at the San Siro, helping the Nerazzurri to a first Scudetto since 2010 in his final term.

The move made Belgium’s all-time top goalscorer the most expensive player ever sold by a Serie A side and comes at time that the club are facing financial difficulties.

Despite saying he was happy to stay with the Italian champions, Lukaku reversed his stance earlier this month and told Inter that he wanted to join Chelsea if the right offer was received.

“Believe it or not, the supporters affection and the special bond with the city of Milan made him think about it for a long time: but then, once he made his decision, he carried on with conviction and firmness,” Pastorello said.

“The economic aspect is a detail, but it is not the main factor that determines our choices and those of our clients.

“With regards to FC Internazionale, I can guarantee that the Sport CEO Giuseppe Marotta, the sporting director Piero Ausilio – as well as the coach Simone Inzaghi, who worked at this personally – did everything in their power to avoid this transfer.

“But there are circumstances that go beyond their decision-making range and depend on the instructions of the owners.”

Arsenal suffers a 2 – 0 defeat in League opener to new boys Brentford

Arsenal suffers defeat in League opener to newsboys Brentford 2 – 0. Thomas Frank’s side were vibrant, skillful, and energetic on a night of high emotion at the Brentford Community Stadium, making the perfect start to the season, but inflicting serious pain on the Gunners in a sobering 90 minutes for the visitors.

Brentford celebrated their return to the top tier after a 74-year absence with a memorable, magnificent victory over woeful Arsenal as they opened their Premier League campaign in style.

Brentford took to life in the big time with ease and fully deserved the lead given to them after 22 minutes when Sergi Canos drove low past keeper Bernd Leno at the near post, although Arsenal complained bitterly that the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.

Only Emile Smith Rowe truly rose above the mediocrity for Arsenal, forcing a save out of Brentford keeper David Raya – who also brilliantly denied Nicolas Pepe late on – before the home fans exploded in noise and elation when they scored a second with 17 minutes left.

Arsenal, without strike pair Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang through illness, paid the price for a hopeless attempt to defend substitute Mads Sorensen’s routine long throw. New £50m defender Ben White was particularly culpable as Christian Norgaard arrived to head home.

Brentford’s supporters, understandably, celebrated wildly at the final whistle, but this was a result and performance that instantly turns the spotlight on Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as he desperately needs an improvement on last season.

Police looking for Memory Machaya’s grave, believed to have been buried at the shrine

Police looking for Memory Machaya’s grave, believed to have been buried at the shrine. While everyone involved agrees that the girl, Memory Machaya, is dead, the location of her grave is in dispute. Her family insists that she was buried at the shrine soon after death, while the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church says this cannot be true, since the church buries no one at the shrine, and bodies are returned to families.

The death of a married 14-year-old Johanne Marange Apostolic Church girl during childbirth at the church’s shrine in Marange, and the location of her grave, are now subjects of a police investigation that could result in prosecutions.

Memory Machaya, who hailed from Kwekwe, was married to Evans Momberume, a marriage that would be found to be in breach of the law once her age is confirmed.

Police detectives from Mutare CID went to Kwekwe to verify Memory’s age and once the age is confirmed they will be moving against Momberume and preferring charges against him and against anyone else who may have facilitated that marriage.

The baby boy whose birth led to his mother’s death is doing well and is reportedly in the custody of the Machaya family in Kwekwe. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police were conducting investigations and promised to give more information soon.

A source close to the investigations said: “Our homicide team is on the ground and we hope they will complete their investigations before Friday for the further management of the case.” With police promising to get to the bottom of the issue, the church has promised to cooperate fully with the authorities.

In a telephone interview with our Manicaland Bureau on Wednesday, the church’s coordinator and spokesperson, Mr Nyasha Marange, said the church abided by the laws of the land and would not stand in the way of law enforcement agents as they probe the case.

“It is true that Memory was married to Evans Momberume. The police should probe the case to its logical conclusion. She died after giving birth and her baby is with the Machayas in Kwekwe.

“As the Johanne Marange Apostolic Church, we will not protect any of our congregants being investigated by law enforcement agents for any criminal offence, be it murder, rape or marrying a minor.

“The police should carry out their duties without fear or favour. No one is above the law and if any of our congregants has a case to answer, let the due process take its course.

As a church, we have been preaching against marrying of minors. During our Saturday church meetings, elders take time to preach against child marriages. No one should be married before the age of 18,” said Mr Marange.

On her place of burial, he vehemently denied that Memory was buried at the church shrine. “There is no graveyard at our shrine. If a congregant dies during our gatherings, arrangements are made to ferry that person’s body to their place of origin.

“The shrine is only used for gatherings and Memory’s body was not buried in the shrine as alleged by her family. We do not have a secret graveyard at the shrine as this violates the country’s laws.”

While insistent that she had not been buried at the shrine, he did not know where she had been buried. Machaya family spokesperson Ms Alice Mabika last week insisted that her niece was buried at the shrine.

“She died soon after delivering her baby boy and the church members went on to bury her without involving us,” said Ms Mabika. She continues to insist she and Memory’s mother, Ms Shy Mabika, were barred from entering the shrine.

“When we arrived at the shrine after getting wind of Memory’s death, we were barred from entering. We remained resolute in our quest to see our daughter’s body but the security details would not budge.”

The Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises and others including the Council of Indigenous Churches of Africa have called for thorough investigations into the case which has caused national outcry.

Women Affairs Minister Sithembiso Nyoni encouraged people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds to respect constitutional provisions. “I want to unequivocally state that child marriage is nothing other than child sexual abuse disguised as a marriage and there is no reason for tolerating such abuse.

“Religion and culture should not be used to sanitise a violation of other people’s rights. Child marriage is a violation of multiple rights of the girl child that include denying her the right to education, the right to health and her well-being.

“It exposes the girl child to gender-based violence, HIV and other health related conditions. It puts the young mother into a cycle of poverty,” said Minister Nyoni. CICA president, Apostle Golden Zininga called upon the police to get to the bottom of the case.

“This is just a tip of the iceberg. As the Council of Indigenous Churches of Africa, we totally condemn such practices in the church. Sections 19 and 81 of the country’s Constitution empower the State and its machinery to safeguard children’s rights,” said Apostle Zininga.

“As churches, let us revisit our operational guidelines to meet modern standards. Let us help our member churches to align with Biblical ethics and United Nations’ guidelines on children’s rights. We also urge the community to report any cases of rape and child marriages to the police and other agencies so that we can unearth these hyenas in sheep skins.”

New details emerge on the Bulawayo police-robbers shootout. The suspected armed robber believed to have been part of a syndicate operating from South Africa who was shot and killed in Bulawayo city centre in a shoot-out with police on Monday, was part of a gang that killed a policeman in Luveve, investigations have revealed.

The suspected robber has not yet been identified while his other accomplice, Thabiso Ncube (41) who was arrested by a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) crack team in Bulawayo, is presently admitted to Mpilo Hospital under police guard.

On Monday night, Constable Gibson Tafara Madzimure (35) was part of a group of police officers reacting to a robbery in Luveve when he was shot dead by armed robbers at the home of an alleged illegal foreign currency dealer identified as Last Mukomawashe.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday confirmed the developments. He said after the shoot-out with the suspected armed robber who died in the city centre, police officers acting on a tip-off arrested Ncube at house number 71924 in Lobengula West, Bulawayo.

“Police received information that the suspect could have been part of a gang that had killed the police officer since he had some injuries,” he said.

When police arrested Ncube, they discovered that he had an injury on the right finger and a fractured right hand. It is alleged he admitted to have shot and killed Cst Madzimure before dropping the gun at the scene.

Police had reacted to an attempted robbery where an illegal forex dealer was being tracked by an armed robbery syndicate which had travelled all the way from South Africa.

The police then intercepted the suspects at Unity Village, Corner Joshua Nkomo Street and Sixth Avenue in Bulawayo. A shoot-out ensued, leading to the death of one of the suspects at the scene.

Other suspects ran away and police recovered a 9mm Star pistol with six rounds of ammunition, a CZ pistol with 10 rounds and a VW Golf motor vehicle with no number plates.

Meanwhile, police are still conducting investigations into the case in which on Saturday, six armed robbers were involved in a shoot-out with police in Bulawayo and believed to be part of a gang that raided Choppies Parklands Supermarket and Access Finance in the city, getting away with nearly US$300 000 and R1 million.

Police shot and killed three of the armed robbers while they were trying to rob a mining equipment dealer in Bulawayo’s Fourwinds suburb. Three others were taken into custody and have appeared in court.

The robbers are Anorld Mpofu alias Tsano (39) and Thamsanqa Mpofu, who were killed on the scene, while Nomore Hove (39) died a few days later after being admitted.

HIT blocks unvaccinated students to write examinations

HIT blocks unvaccinated students to write examinations. In a notice to students yesterday, HIT registrar Mary Samupindi said unvaccinated students will also be barred from accessing university accommodation.

Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) has barred unvaccinated students from sitting for their end of semester examinations. Samupindi said:

The Harare Institute of Technology wishes to inform students that the end of 2020/2021 academic year examinations will commence three days after the government proclaims the lifting of the COVID-9-induced national lockdown. She added that students without vaccination cards should produce a COVID-19 negative PCR test issued within 48 hours.

Universities have been closed since last month following a surge in COVID-19 cases. The development comes at a time the government has also barred unvaccinated congregants from attending church services.

While the government has maintained that vaccination is voluntary, members of the public now feel that they do not have a choice since they are denied access to some goods and services if they are not vaccinated.

The government has also threatened to withdraw salaries for teachers who are not vaccinated by the time it orders schools to reopen. Zimbabwe aims to inoculate about 60 per cent of the population to achieve herd immunity.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa previously said the country can only return to normalcy after herd immunity has been attained. As of the 13th of August 2021, the Southern African country had vaccinated just over two million people. Meanwhile, the coronavirus curve has been flattening in recent days.

AAG VP Passion Java: I’m not a ZANU PF member. Java whose late mother Senator Christine Rambanepasi-Java was a member of opposition MDC made the remarks while speaking to Phathisani Sibanda and Tinashe Chikuse on PowerFM’s breakfast show.

United States-based Zimbabwean socialite and preacher, Passion Java real name Panganayi Java has said he is not a member of the ruling ZANU PF.

The self-styled prophet has been dining with and “campaigning” for ZANU PF and its officials including President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Java, however, openly said that he was not a member of ZANU PF and he does not support any political party adding that the only party he supports is his wife and not political parties.

He also claimed that he likes President Emmerson Mnangagwa and respects the work that the president is doing for the nation.

Java commended the infrastructure development projects undertaken by the new dispensation and emphasised that he only supported the President’s vision and development programs, not the party.

Java further stated that he asked Koffi Olomide to mention “Mnangagwa Number 1” on Roki’s Patati Patata song due to the development projects which Mnangagwa is championing.

Passion Java is the Vice President of the Philip Chiyangwa founded Affirmative Action Group which is a defacto ZANU PF entity.

At some point, Java took a jab at opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa saying “haana plan [he does not have any plan],” remarks that angered Chamisa’s supporters.

Most of the responses to Madam Boss’ remarks rebuked the socialite for lacking compassion. We present some of the responses below.

For a WOMAN, a MOTHER with a daughter nearing that age to utter in fact vomit such nonsense it’s just disgusting and disrespectful to women and mothers.

Student demands their seized ZIMSEC results. Zimsec withheld Mutandwa’s examination results claiming that she illegally accessed the November 2020 Mathematics paper 2 question paper before entering the examination room at Intellect College in Norton.

A 2020 O-Level student, Ashley Mutandwa, has written to the Zimbabwe School Examination Council (Zimsec) demanding the release of her results seized on allegations of examination cheating.

Through her lawyer, Alex Majachani, Mutandwa has written to ZIMSEC in a letter dated June 21 also copied to Intellect College, Mashonaland West provincial director, district school’s inspector and Mashonaland West Zimsec regional manager, denying the allegations levelled against her. Reads part of the letter: I am writing this letter deeply moved and disturbed by the determination you took to withhold my Mathematics O-Level results.

I strongly reject and refuse totally the allegations you are leveling against me. I did not see or have access to the alleged Mathematics paper which was circulating on social media.

I set the examination on the date of her burial and I was heavily depleted, but did write the examination as a fulfilment.

The outstanding performance in paper 2, written on December 10 2020, is a result of me gaining my strength, motivation a week after the loss. The performance exhibited in the paper is complementary to my few revision tests.

My presentation and workings in the exam is clear testimony that I did not cheat, but had prepared thoroughly. I absolutely pronounce that I did not breach the Zimsec Act section 34, subsection 1 and paragraph C of 1994. May your board reconsider its determination and release my results.

She said she performed badly in her Mathematics paper 1 because she wrote the examination grieving over the loss of her neighbour, Gogo Gava Rusariya Tapererwa, who was buried the same day.

Mutandwa also wrote to Zimsec assistant director identified as Mashingaidze, demanding the release of the results.

Nelson Chamisa responds to questions of his meeting with Simba Makoni

Nelson Chamisa responds to questions of his meeting with Simba Makoni. Opposition MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa has hinted that another alliance is coming for the purpose of the 2023 elections.

Chamisa posted a picture of himself and former Finance Minister, Simba Makoni, on Twitter prompting some of his followers to quiz him on the meaning of the picture. He captioned it as follows:

“We must lead differently and leave a legacy”-Dr Simba Makoni. I had a great conversation on the future of our great country. I’m always humbled and grateful for the solid wisdom I get from esteemed and eminent Zimbabweans who are a gift to us all. Some of his followers asked if Makoni was part of his Chamisa’s plan to dislodge the ruling ZANU PF from power. One of his followers, African Prince(Ticha) @MupfukudzwaT asked:

Is this another alliance?

Chamisa responded suggesting that he was planning something big with the founder of the Mavambo Kusile/Dawn party. He said:

Fireworks loading!

The response was interpreted as confirmation that the former ICT Minister was planning to form another alliance with politicians and political parties.

In 2017, MDC-T then led by the late former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai joined six other parties to form the MDC Alliance that was premised on defeating president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

There are disputes between MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora and the Chamisa-led party over who are the principals of the MDC Alliance.

Mwonzora claims that he leads the 2017 alliance by virtue of being the leader of the MDC-T while Chamisa’s side is also claiming to be the real MDC that entered into the alliance.

Chamisa contested the 2018 presidential election on the MDC Alliance card but a 2020 Supreme Court ruling said he was not the legitimate leader of MDC which entered into the coalition.

The ruling created confusion as to who was the real leader of the opposition party. Analysts believe that as the nation approaches the 2023 elections, clarity on the ownership of the name is important as that could be a source of confusion for the electorate.

Women rights founder speak on Madam Boss’ Memory Machaya remarks. Mashamombe made the remarks after Madam Boss issued an apology over her remarks on planned protests that are meant to push the government to ensure justice for Memory Machaya, a 14-year-old married girl who died during childbirth in Marange, Manicaland.

The founder of Tag a Life International (TaLI), a Women and girls’ rights organisation, Nyaradzo Mashayamombe has urged socialite and comedienne Madam Boss to upgrade her education to avoid making public blunders.

Madam Boss, also known as Tyra Chikocho real name Tarisai Cleopatra Chikocho, said she would not join the protests thereby attracting criticism of her followers on social media. She later issued a statement saying she was sorry. Pindula News presents her statement.

*****Once Again Am Sorry to all my fans and all the corporates that I represent *****
I’m a very peaceful person who mostly likes to keep to myself and stick to what I know best, entertaining my fans even those that mock me, I’ve been accused of many things and called different names but I have never cared because I know myself, I’m a mother and also a women and my heart bleeds each time I see a women or a girl child suffer. That’s why I always post any issues concerning (the) abuse of a girl child.

I chose not (to) keep quiet on this occasion because the Marange shrine issue is one that has touched my heart and I’m pained that my live video a few days ago was taken out of context. However, I’m here today apologizing to each and everyone that was offended by that video and also to say I’m personally against child marriages and strongly hope the culprits of the Marange shrine be brought to book.
#JusticeForMemory

The “apology” attracted varying responses with some saying that was not an apology as she was not admitting that she was wrong. TALI founder, Nyaradzo Mashayamombe suggested Madam Boss could have avoided the scandal if she was educated. She said:

Madam Boss I love you. Have said it before will say it again. Enrol yourself in a diploma or degree, it will help you. You are underutilized in this space If you don’t challenge yourself to a degree of sorts, an education will improve you on many levels including how to not continue apologizing for same issues.

You are a lovely soul who will keep repeating same mistakes if you keep uneducated. Enrol ku Women’s University in Africa on age basis you will be just fine. I listened to your Interview with Butterfly all the rough edges will polish a bit with education.

While some agreed with Mashayamombe, another social media user suggested that Madam Boss’ issue had to do more with lack of moral values and not education perse.

Bruno Fernandes scores a hattrick as man united thumped Leeds 5 – 1

Bruno Fernandes scores a hattrick as man united thumped Leeds 5 – 1. Bruno Fernandes scored his first Manchester United hat-trick as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side overpowered old rivals Leeds to make the perfect start to the new Premier League season.

The Portugal midfielder opened the scoring on the half-hour mark at a packed Old Trafford, but Luke Ayling’s thunderous strike drew Leeds level early in the second half.

Mason Greenwood restored the hosts’ lead with a crisp finish less than two minutes later, before Fernandes’ low shot was ruled to have crossed the line by referee Paul Tierney after a check of goalline technology.

The 26-year-old quickly completed his hat-trick with a thumping finish from Victor Lindelof’s pass, before Fred added United’s fourth goal in 14 minutes from Paul Pogba’s cross – the Frenchman’s fourth assist of the afternoon.

It was Fernandes’ first hat-trick since he moved to Old Trafford in January 2020 and only the second by a Red Devils player since Robin van Persie’s title-winning effort against Aston Villa in 2013.

But the game was also a personal triumph for Pogba. The France midfielder’s future has been the subject of intense debate as he enters the final year of his contract.

But his four assists included a sublime pass for Greenwood’s goal, and he left the field to a standing ovation 15 minutes from time as £74m new-boy Jadon Sancho was introduced for his debut.
