Foreign nationals who came to seek employment in South Africa are living in fear in KwaZulu-Natal as they are afraid of being attacked by supporters of Operation Dudula, which is expected to hit the province on Sunday.

This comes after threatening social media posts and a voice recording about the massive roll-out of Operation Dudula in KZN made rounds at the weekend.

Operation Dudula, which started in Soweto last year and has since morphed and spread to inner Johannesburg and Hillbrow, apparently aims to remove illegal or undocumented foreign nationals, particularly those setting up shops and engaging in criminal acts.

In one of the voice recordings, a man said that, as the committee, they are calling upon all people in Durban and KZN to take part in Sunday’s operation.

He said: “On the 27th, it’s going down in Durban and we are removing all foreigners in the city and we [won’t brook] any further delays as a lot of people say they are ready.”

He said the meeting point is the Gugu Dlamini Park at the Workshop, in the Durban CBD. The man further said they will start the day by selecting the marshals to control the masses to avoid incidents of theft and looting.

He said they will be entering every shop and salon owned by foreign nationals and removing their belongings from the building then locking it with their own chains and padlocks

“We are not going to steal and loot anything. Arrangements have been made to communicate a message and our plan of action with the police. We are going to start in Durban central and then move to the townships. This movement would also be calling to areas such as Montclair, Umlazi, KwaMashu, Ntuzuma and other areas. You must alert your employer in advance that the situation will be very bad in Durban come Sunday,” said the man on the voice recording.

On Monday, the secretary-general of the African Solidarity Network (Asonet), Daniel Byamungu Dunia, said they have been made aware of the voice recording. He said they formed a social cohesion group called Civil Society and Church Organisation to coordinate messages and engagement with relevant authorities. Dunia said they have also reported the threatening messages to all law enforcement agencies.

Dunia confirmed that foreign nationals in KZN are living in fear because they do not know when members of Operation Dudula might strike.

He said on Tuesday, the organization’s standing committee will be meeting with the police to plot a way forward.

“There is a meeting that has been set with the Saps provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-general Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to discuss this Operation Dudula and to get a plan for the police to ensure people’s safety,” he said.

Dunia said: “Our members on the ground are very [scared] and they are living in fear now because they have also heard the voice recording. Since the day the poster about Sunday’s launch started circulating on social media and the incident in Pietermaritzburg, people have been very scared.”

Last week, one person was killed while three were seriously injured during a clash between foreign nationals and Pietermaritzburg taxi drivers on Church Street. This resulted in the taxi drivers chasing away the foreign nationals from their place of business, stating that they were “reclaiming the economy”.

Dunia said their last hope for safety are police, as they pray that come Sunday, they will be protected.

He said after the meeting with Mkhwanazi, they will come out with one voice that will be communicated among all members in the province.

“We also don’t want to create panic as well and that is why we have to follow all channels to make sure that we are giving the proper message,” he said.

RAMAPHOSA SPEAKS OUT

Speaking during the Human Rights Day commemoration in North West on Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said: “As a country founded on tolerance, respect for diversity and non-discrimination, we must never allow ourselves to turn against people who come from beyond our borders.”

He said the country should not allow itself to be at war with those who come from other countries, adding that is “un-South African”.

Ramaphosa said South Africa always had people from other countries and they all participated in building industries like mining.

“Of course now we are facing challenges of unemployment, but those challenges should never mean that we should go and wage war against those people from other countries. Once we do that, we just immediately promote this spirit of xenophobia and that we hate them and they must go.

Ramaphosa also urged employers in South Africa to refrain from employing undocumented foreign nationals as that creates tension among people.

“What we are saying is that yes, we want people to be properly documented in our country and employers to be very careful and hire people who are properly documented,” said Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa said those who are setting up organizations like Dudula, are contravening the law. He said the government cannot allow a situation where people will embark on vigilantism to deal with a social problem.

“We must collectively, as South Africans, deal with it, and from the government side, we will do our work. But we also want to say let us work together as it is highly sensitive as this thing can soon turn out into xenophobia and you know how the continent can turn its back on us,” said the president.

Reggae star Jah Cure was convicted of attempted manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison in the Netherlands on Tuesday.

The Behind These Prison Walls singer was found not guilty of attempted murder by the court, which rejected his self-defence claim.

“The 43-years old man was sentenced to six years in prison – with credit for time served – for attempted manslaughter. The court finds him not guilty of attempted murder. His claim of self-defence was rejected by the court,” Franklin Wattimena, press officer of the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service, told OBSERVER ONLINE.

Jah Cure’s legal team may choose to appeal the ruling in the Netherlands Court of Appeal.

“Both the 43-year old man and the prosecutor can appeal to the Court of Appeal within two weeks if they disagree with the court’s ruling,” Wattimena said.

He was arraigned in a Netherlands court last year, and spent his 43rd birthday as well as Christmas and New Year’s Day behind bars.

Jah Cure, whose given name is Siccaturie Alcock, is facing attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, aggravated assault or attempted aggravated assault in relation to an alleged stabbing incident involving event promoter Nicardo ‘Papa’ Blake on October 1 at Dam Square, in the city centre of Amsterdam. Jah Cure was in Amsterdam for a performance.

The True Reflections singer has had previous run-ins with the law. He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, rape and robbery with aggravation and following his conviction, received a 15-year sentence in 1999, but was released early in 2007 after serving eight years. Four years later, he went on trial on drug possession charges after police found a small quantity of marijuana in the artiste’s motor vehicle during a spot check in St Andrew.

Jah Cure is known for songs including Longing For, Call On Me, and Unconditional Love.

It happened shortly before 11:00 this morning: Mphowabadimo decided it was high time to prank some of the other Housemates. Speaking to Terry, they decided (along with Thato and Gash1) that they would plant a cond*m (in plentiful supply in the Big Brother Mzansi House) in the bathroom. For a bit of added verité, they would partially fill it with some lotion. We don’t mean to sound prudish, but… eeew!

The plan was then for Terry to “find” it while cleaning the bathroom and then pretend to throw a fit (which is entirely plausible in the event that this would actually happen, thank you very much), and then confront the resident lovebirds – Thato and Gash1 – about the disgusting find.

So, plan laid, it was time to put it into motion. On cue, Terry emerged from the bathroom in a rage, throwing accusations at Thato and Gash1. Thato – for her part – participated happily enough, but Gash1 was found to be a little lacking in his enthusiasm.

As for the people they were trying to prank? Not much of a reaction, there. The only thing that Themba had to say was, “stop it”, because things were getting loud. They usually do, where Terry is concerned.

Deciding they needed to escalate, Mphowabadimo and Terry staged a fight in the upstairs bedroom – throwing themselves down onto the ground and stamping on the floor – to give the impression that things had taken a turn for the worse. That did the trick – although perhaps a little too well.

Themba tried to break up the fight by pulling Terry away from Mphowabadimo, and she was moved outside. Mphowabadimo followed her as if itching for a fight… we’re not sure what she was hoping to achieve, here. She perhaps overplayed her hand.

Sis Tamara was stressed. Clearly trying to stop them from hurting each other, they worked hard to keep the two from hurting each other, and were confused when both Mpho and Terry broke into laughter, unable to contain their mirth any longer.

The thing is, Sis Tamara didn’t find it funny. Not one little bit. They were clearly upset, having believed that this was all real. Perhaps even a little traumatised. Sis Tamara had to walk away and have a solo cigarette to calm down, and was very cold toward the pranksters for a while after that.

In the end, what was the point? As Tulz said to Themba, “how was that meant to be a prank for us?” It certainly hyped things up a bit, and more than a few viewers were taken in, but it may have needed a bit more tweaking to have the desired outcome.

The bride, Grace Gwaltney, was about to head to her wedding ceremony Saturday when Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks surprised her and her bridal party outside of their hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Hanks is filming a movie.

Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to attend a G20 summit being hosted by Indonesia later this year, Russia’s ambassador in Jakarta said on Wednesday, following calls by some members for the country to be barred from the group.

“Not only G20, many organisations are trying to expel Russia….the reaction of the West is absolutely disproportional,” Ambassador Lyudmila Vorobyova told a news conference on Wednesday.

The United States and its Western allies are assessing whether Russia should remain within the Group of Twenty (G20) grouping of major economies following its invasion of Ukraine, sources involved in the discussions told Reuters.
Meanwhile, the European Union’s (EU) foreign ministers disagreed on Monday on whether and how to slap sanctions on Russia’s lucrative energy sector over its invasion of Ukraine, with Germany saying the bloc was too dependent on Russian oil to decide an embargo.

The EU and allies have already imposed hefty measures against Russia, including freezing its central bank’s assets. Russia’s siege and bombardment of Mariupol port, which EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called “a massive war crime”, is increasing pressure for action.

But targetting Russian energy exports, as the United States and Britain have done, is a divisive choice for the 27-nation EU, which relies on Russia for 40% of its gas. Some of those who want the EU to go further showed impatience at the pace of talks after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

“Why should Europe give Putin more time to earn more money from oil and gas? More time to use European ports? More time to use unsanctioned Russian banks in Europe? Time to pull the plug,” Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said on Twitter.

But Borrell told a news conference that while the bloc would “continue isolating Russia”, concrete decisions would be made later.
One EU diplomat said some hoped that by June the EU would have found enough alternative sources of energy to seriously consider an oil embargo. No date has been agreed though, and other EU states may have different targets in mind.

Germany and the Netherlands said the EU was dependent on Russian oil and gas and could not cut itself off right now.

“The question of an oil embargo is not a question of whether we want or don’t want (it), but a question of how much we depend on oil,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told reporters.
“Germany is importing a lot (of Russian oil), but there are also other member states who can’t stop the oil imports from one day to the other,” she said, adding that the bloc should instead work on reducing its reliance on Moscow for its energy needs.

Other potential sanctions being discussed, diplomats have said, include closing loopholes on trust funds used by oligarchs, adding new names to the sanctions list, stopping Russian boats from docking in EU ports, and cutting more banks’ access to the SWIFT global messaging system.

All this will be discussed again on Thursday when US President Joe Biden will be in Brussels for talks with transatlantic alliance NATO’s 30 members, the EU, and Group of Seven (G7) members including Japan, designed to harden the West’s response to Moscow.

Passion Java has always enjoyed some level of attention that comes with his celebrity status, but it looks like the youth are now growing tired of following him around.

The Zanu PF preacher recently attempted one of his signature walkabouts, this time turning to the streets of Chiredzi. But as Hopewell Chin’ono reports, the youth completely mized him, and had no time for him. According to him, the youth are sick of the government’s empty promises, and Passion Java’s affiliation with Zanu PF and the president makes him part of the team nobody cares about any more.

The journalist shared a video showing the preacher walking through the streets, while everyone around just stands by and watches him pass. Normally, he would be surrounded by adoring fans who can’t wait to get close to him. But this time, it was as though nothing out of the ordinary was going on, as the people in the vicinity simply went about their business.

Today Passion Java tried his walk about antics in Chiredzi and the youth stayed away.

Social media users were extremely tickled by the video. As many of them commented, there was absolutely no reason for him to show up with as many bodyguards as he did, as they all ended up being completely useless.

Others have said that this trend has been seen in other places, not just Chiredzi. Apparently, just last week, he did the same thing in Sam Levy’s village in Harare, but once again nobody was bothered by his presence.

Not too long ago, they locked horns when Hopewell called Passion Java a comedian “prophet”, and said it was very stupid that he had 300K followers while activist Namatai Kwekweza had only one thousand.

Passion Java did not appreciate the post, and hit back at him, calling him a failed journalist, trying to stay relevant by attacking Zimbabweans and politicians, hoping to get some money from NGOs. It was all a rather hectic saga.

Shanghai authorities on Wednesday called for calm as worried citizens swamped online grocery platforms to stock up on food over fears of impending lockdowns in a city struggling to halt a Covid spike. China is experiencing its worst Covid-19 outbreak since the start of the pandemic more than two years ago, with Shanghai posting record-high case counts as the highly transmissible Omicron variant frustrates authorities.

China’s biggest city on Wednesday reported 981 cases — all but four of them asymptomatic — a number that dwarfs any previous daily tally in the city and which is nearly one-fifth of the day’s national total.

Shanghai has responded to the outbreak with targeted residential lockdowns in areas with confirmed cases or close contacts. There are growing public fears of more local lockdowns or stay-at-home orders for the entire city of roughly 25 million people.

Public concern has spiralled in the city in recent days and residents have taken to social media to air their frustrations. They have complained about unclear government messaging, alarmist posts about expanding test sites and impending lockdowns, and the announcement that at least two indoor arenas in the city had been converted into mass-quarantine sites.

“We hope that everyone will not believe or spread rumours, and especially do not maliciously spread rumours that cause panic in society,” Wu Jinglei, head of Shanghai’s health commission said at a daily briefing.

Stores have seen bustling business as consumers stock up, and social media images circulated late Tuesday showing crowds of shoppers converging on outdoor vegetable markets. The images could not be independently verified.

Online shoppers on Wednesday posted complaints that platforms were crashing under the strain or that some goods were unavailable. Mainland health officials last week revealed that only around half of Chinese aged over 80 have been double-vaccinated.

Shanghai shut schools for nearly two weeks but has avoided the sort of citywide lockdown implemented in some northeastern cities hit by the current outbreak.

But the spectre of suddenly being confined at home for anything from two to 14 days has sowed public anxiety among Shanghai’s population. Chinese media reported that some financial traders in Shanghai and Shenzhen had been staying overnight in their offices to avoid being sequestered at home.

A NASH Paints employee says her life has been turned into hell after she was linked to an incident at a Harare hotel, whose video has been the talk of social media circles.

The video shows a n@ked woman being chased down the hotel corridors by another woman.

The social media vibe claims the fleeing naked woman had been caught in a compromising position in one of the hotel rooms by the wife of an unidentified man.

Since then, a number of faces have been linked to the naked woman on the unregulated platforms of social media.

Tarisai Milner Makumbirofa, a married woman who is the marketing and communications manager at NASH Paints, is one of those who have been dragged into the mess.

Her family, including her husband, have claimed she was home throughout the day, when the incident happened at the Harare hotel.

Her employers have also come out in full support of her and have said the damage, which their brand has suffered, cannot be compared with the psychological damage inflicted on Tarisai.

NASH Paints said the disappointing thing was that the video being shown on social media clearly “shows that it’s not her but someone else.”

Yesterday, Tarisai spoke.

“I first started getting calls from my relatives over the issue,” she said.

“They were saying my pictures were all over social media and I visited my Facebook page where I was being tagged.

“But, honestly, we are different – me and the person in the video.

“I am a family person and I don’t know why people are attacking me in this way.

“I am sure from (the hotel), they can confirm the identity of the woman in the video.

“I don’t know why people are doing this to me but the truth shall surely come out.

“Surprisingly, on the day in question, I was with my family at home, and my husband can confirm that.”

In a statement, NASH Paints said: “Nash Paints is a brand for, and by the people, and we always aspire to be in good standing with our public and stakeholders on all matters,” the company said.

“To that end, we take this opportunity to dispel a story published by some social media players that linked one of our employees to a scandal that rocked a local hotel whereby a certain young lady was allegedly caught red-handed with a married man.

“While the allegation has since been retracted, we feel duty-bound to communicate the true position.

“The alleged Tarie, who is our employee, is a happily married woman who was at home in the company of her loving husband and kids, on the day in question.

“While we respect the rights of individuals to communicate and share whatever ‘news’ they find juicy enough, we strongly feel it is important to verify facts prior to any such publication so that we protect the freedoms and rights of all.”

Added the statement:

“Tarie is one of our cherished employees, who has continued to conduct herself in the most professional manner, and she has a strong and verified alibi on the day in question.

“We hope that all players in the news and blogging industry exercise due diligence in future correspondence.”

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has prohibited the Nelson Chamisa-led Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) from holding a campaign rally at Olympic Stadium, Epworth, Harare on Thursday, 24 March.

In a letter dated 22 March, addressed to CCC’s Patrick Moyo, the Officer Commanding Police, Harare East District, one Chief Superintendent C Muzivi said ZRP doesn’t have adequate manpower to provide security at the rally. Said Muzivi:

I acknowledge receipt of your notification letter dated 21 March 2022… whereby you intend to hold a Public Political Gathering at Olympic Stadium, Epworth, Harare, on the 24th of March 2022 from 1100 hours to 1600 hours.

However, your meeting has not been sanctioned for security reasons.

We have no adequate manpower to cover the meeting. Our manpower has already been deployed to various polling stations in preparation for by-elections slated for Saturday 26 March 2022.

Police have already banned CCC from holding rallies in Gokwe, Marondera, Binga and Masvingo.

The Masvingo rally only proceeded after a High Court judge ordered ZRP to allow the opposition party to hold the event without interference.

The ban comes when ZANU PF is holding its final campaign rally in Chitungwiza this Wednesday ahead of the 26 March by-elections.

ZANU PF and the MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora have been conducting rallies across the country without hindrance from the police but CCC had to go to court several times challenging ZRP’s prohibition orders.

Zimdancehall musician Seh Calaz, real name Tawanda Mumanyi, earns more than US$8 000 a month from his live shows, social media accounts and studio, his former wife has claimed.

Seh Calaz’s former wife, Moira Knight, recently approached the Harare Civil Court, seeking child support for their two-year-old son.

Through her lawyers, Moira alleged that the musician is not taking care of his child even though he makes substantial amounts of money. She said:

Seh Calaz is a celebrated musician who gets income, mostly from live shows.

In general, he realizes between US$1 800 to US$2 000 per live show while on average he performs at a minimum of four functions per month.

In addition, he owns YALA studios, with two bases, one in Mbare National and another in Magaba, where a booking goes for US$40 per session.

On average he makes between US$400 to US$600 per month from the studios.

Seh Calaz also makes income from his Facebook and YouTube accounts with 482 000 followers and 43 400 subscribers, respectively.

To assist the court in ventilating the issues, Seh Calaz can bring proof of his earnings from the social media accounts, which can later be verified with the service providers.

Moira said she is not gainfully employed is surviving off her parents’ handouts.

She is asking for US$300 in rentals, electricity (US$120), Gas (US$45), Maid (US$100), Clothes (US$110), and Transport (US$100) per month.

Harare Magistrate Judith Taruvinga postponed the hearing to Friday to allow Moira to provide evidence to support her claims.
