Finance minister Mthuli Ncube summoned over gold coins

Deputy President of the Senate Mike Nyambuya has summoned Finance minister Mthuli Ncube to Parliament to present a ministerial statement explaining how gold coins will stop the country’s economic haemorrhage.

This is after leader of government business in the Senate Monica Mutsvangwa failed to “satisfactorily” respond to questions on the purpose of the gold coins.

Authorities have said the gold coins will be introduced on July 25 to ostensibly save the local currency from collapse and also halt soaring inflation.

But there is pessimism from the generality of largely poor Zimbabweans who are failing to see how they will benefit from the coins.

“The fundamentals of the economy are in the right place, the issue of the gold coins is a clear plan to move the economy forward,” Mutsvangwa had said.
The issue of the introduction of gold coins is meant to provide a store of value and strengthen our local currency and minimise the volatilities of the exchange rate. I think it will be better for the Minister of Finance to come with a paper in this august House to talk with detail to the last point.

Nyambuya then ordered that Ncube has to come to the Senate to address questions on the coins.

“We need the Minister of Finance to come here and address the Senate. These issues have been outstanding for a long time. Make sure that in the next sitting he has to be here to answer the questions,” Nyambuya said.

According to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), the gold coins named after the mighty Victoria Falls will be called Mosi-oa-Tunya.

A number of interventions by the RBZ and government in the past few months have failed to stop runaway inflation and galloping prices of basic goods amid calls for total dollarisation.

Former Vice President Kembo Mohadi’s daughter appointed ZEC commissioner

Former Vice President Kembo Mohadi’s daughter Abigail Ambrose has been appointed and sworn in as a Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) commissioner, in a move opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has described as unconstitutional.

The appointment of Abigail, who is Mohadi’s daughter from ex-wife Tambudzani has raised questions around the election management body’s independence.
Despite having resigned from government, Mohadi is still Zanu-PF vice president.  CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said the appointment should be reversed.

“This unconstitutional appointment calls into serious question the credibility of ZEC.
The Constitution explicitly requires ZEC to be independent and non-partisan. This flagrant appearance of bias violates the constitutional imperative. The appointment must be rescinded forthwith,” said Mahere.

Abigail’s is married to Malcom Ambrose. They got married in 2014 at a plush wedding that saw top Zanu-PF officials in attendance showering praises on and the husband. Human rights lawyer Obey Shava said the move did not inspire confidence in the commission.

“The appointment of Mohadi’s daughter as a ZEC commissioner goes to the root of its intergrity as an independent commission. This move has deprived ZEC of any good repute. It does not inspire confidence that would supervise any free and fair electoral processes,” said Shava.

Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole denied bail at the High Court

High Court judge Justice Lucy Mungwari dismissed Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)legislators, Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole’s bail appeals.

In her ruling, Justice Mungwari said Sikhala, in particular, has a heightened propensity to re-offend even though the Zengeza West MP has been arrested 67 times on politically-motivated charges without conviction.

Sikhala and Sithole had approached a higher court appealing against a magistrate’s decision not to grant them bail pending trial, two weeks ago in which bail is a Constitutional right.

They unsuccessfully applied for bail before the Harare magistrates’ courts.
The magistrate ruled that the two MPs were a threat to public security and were likely to re-offend if released on bail.

Sikhala and Sithole are facing charges of incitement to commit violence in Nyatsime following the murder of CCC activist Moreblessing Ali.

Ali’s dismembered remains were discovered in a disused well at a farm in Beatrice, about 10km away from where she was taken.

The suspect in her murder is her ex-boyfriend Pius Mukandi, alias Jamba (31), has since been arrested and was remanded in custody.

President Mnangagwa’s govt defends appointment of Mohadi’s daughter as ZEC commissioner

$

Government has defended the appointment of Zanu-PF Vice President Kembo Mohadis daughter, Abigail, as a Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) commissioner, saying she has a right to serve the nation just like anyone else.

Abigail Millicent Ambrose’s appointment has raised questions on the election body’s impartiality and independence.

She is Mohadi’s daughter from his marriage with ex-wife, Tambudzani, and was sworn in by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday at State House alongside five other commissioners.

“Children and relatives of high-profile people have the right to employment and service to their country as everyone else. That’s why it is called, “equal opportunities,” Mangwana said.

Mangwana dismissed claims there could be a conflict of interest, with fears Abigail could be biased in favour of her father’s political party.
He added: “It is called professionalism. Secondly, no single commissioner can override the work of the whole commission, they work as a collective.

“Thirdly, is it not that people were openly interviewed by parliament? Was there a more qualified applicant who was excluded?”

Opposition Citizen’s Coalition for Change (CCC) has demanded that the appointment be reversed as it betrays independence of the election management body.

ZEC is already under heavy scrutiny from civic society organisations (CSOs) and opposition parties, who accuse it of attempting to rig the 2023 polls in favour of the ruling party.

Its independence has been a constant issue, with the 2018 elections eventually settled in court after it was accused of failing to handle the plebiscite.

Much recently, comments that Zanu-PF will lead ZEC’s delimitation process further raised questions of its impartiality.

Big massive road construction projects in Beitbridge

$
0
0

The massive road construction projects in Beitbridge, which dovetail with the ongoing US$300 million modernisation of the border post being spearheaded by the Second Republic, have transformed the face of the border town.

The modernisation of Beitbridge Border Post is among the top infrastructural projects aimed at stimulating economic transformation in line with the drive to attain an empowered and prosperous upper middle-income society by 2030.

The project is also expected to promote the ease of doing business and trade facilitation between Zimbabwe and the entire region and beyond.

The Beitbridge roadworks, in particular, are a component of the flagship Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu Highway widening, reconstruction and rehabilitation, a critical component of the North-South-Corridor.

The project is being undertaken by five local companies and is wholly funded by the Government.

By May this year, at least 313km of the rehabilitated highway had been opened to traffic.

The 971km project involves the dualisation, upgrading and tolling of the highway.

The road has been divided into three sections namely; Beitbridge – Harare: 570km (8 Toll Plazas), Harare – Chirundu: 342km (6 Toll Plazas) and Harare Ring Road: 59km (3 Toll Plazas).

The estimated total project cost is US$2,7 billion.

The project has already created employment opportunities across the country as well as improved transport and trade in the region.

Upon completion, the tolls will also provide a revenue stream for maintenance and rehabilitation of roads across the country.

Under the Infrastructure, Utilities and Digital Economy cluster, Zimbabwe’s economic blueprint, the National Development Strategy (NDS 1) prioritises completion of road rehabilitation projects.

The contractor, Bitumen World is constructing a total of 6,3km within Beitbridge Town.

So far, the 5,3km of the road linking the Beitbridge Border Post and the highways leading to Bulawayo and Harare is being revamped with attention also given to the drainage system.

When a Chronicle news crew visited the various sites of the roadworks this week, construction workers were busy redesigning and reconstructing the roads to increase safety and reduce congestion.

The road leading to the border post, which is one of the busiest, has been completely overhauled and now conforms to international standards.

The Beitbridge Town Council has been battling clogged drainage systems that resulted in flash flooding after heavy rains.

The contractor is working on improving accessibility by widening and resurfacing portions of some of the feeder roads in the border town.

Bitumen World is one of the five companies contracted by the Government to widen the Harare-Beitbridge Highway.
Matabeleland South provincial roads engineer, Mangisi Nkomo, said a broader section of the 5,3km leading to Beitbridge Border Post has since been opened to traffic.

“We are currently upgrading and rehabilitating 6,3km within the Beitbridge urban area. This section comprises 5,3km from the border post along the Beitbridge- Bulawayo Highway and some sections have been dualised,” he said.

“We are also doing at least 1km from the Beitbridge-Masvingo-road junction. This will also see the reconstruction of the roundabout at the border post entrance to complement the upgrading of the border post and works have already commenced.”

Eng Nkomo said they were also constructing a state-of-the-art roundabout at the point where the road branches to Bulawayo and Masvingo and is nearing completion.

“To date 3,2km of the 5,3km has been opened to traffic on the south-bound lane and 1,5km on the northbound lane.

The 1km for the Masvingo Road leg has been completed and opened to traffic,” he said.

“The overall progress to completion is 80 percent. The roadworks are actually part of the Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu Highway upgrading and rehabilitation project whereby in Matabeleland South, a total of 29KM will be completed.”

Beitbridge Town Clerk, Mr Loud Ramakgapola, said the roadworks coupled with the modernisation of the border post will enhance the beauty of the border town and boost investment.

“We are seeing more people visiting the border town due to an efficient border post and this will boost business in the town,” he said.

“The standard set in the border upgrade may spill over into setting the standards for infrastructure in the town, especially looking at how the roads have changed the face of our town.

“In fact, we are likely to see developers benchmarking against the high standard at the border, which would be a positive development for the town.”

Addressing the inaugural Buy Zimbabwe 2022 public procurement conference and awards ceremony in Harare on Wednesday, President Mnangagwa said local companies contracted by the Government to reconstruct and rehabilitate roads and highways are doing sterling and professional work, which highlights their capabilities.

Previously, local companies were being overlooked in terms of the awarding of tenders for big national projects.

The President said under the Second Republic, the Government has taken a bold, decisive and revolutionary decision to fundamentally transform the country through the awarding of procurement contracts and tenders to local enterprises.

The move by the Government has significantly helped to create and domesticate employment as well as improve skills levels, while also saving the country, foreign currency.

Under the second phase of the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP2), the Government is resealing 1 290km of roads, reconstructing 427 drainage structures and working on 24 830km of erosion works and drains across the country.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development is also working with local authorities as the implementing agent in carrying out the roadworks under ERRP2.

Cabinet recently declared the country’s road network a state of disaster as most of the roads have become untrafficable due to ageing and damage by heavy rains that were received during the past summer season.

Government has since mandated the Department of Roads to take over 500km of roads from urban councils.

The roadworks under the ERRP and involvement of some private sector players, has started to change the face of roads across the country.

South African businesswoman and reality TV star, Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize is facing mounting criticism for her statement regarding allegations of abuse by her son Andile Mpisane towards ex-girlfriend Sithelo Shozi – and influencer Doro Mongy is one of those chiming in.

The social media star took to Instagram Live to call out the businesswoman and reality TV star.

In an IG Live on Wednesday 6 July, a day after Sithelo made bombshell threats against Andile Mpisane, Doro Mongy shared her thoughts about what had transpired. The influencer – known for her beauty product empire – also chastised MaMkhize for seemingly defending her son.

Defending Sithelo, Doro said: “No one deserves such. You guys called her and threatened her more on top of that. You called her to remove [those posts]. Your son did that to her. There is proof”.

Doro also slammed fellow stars in South Africa over their silence.

She continued: “Influencers and celebrities in South Africa, you guys are hypocrites, you are a**-liking. You are not saying anything about what happened to this child”.

Custard cream cheesecake recipe

We love coming up with new desserts using our favourite biscuits which is exactly how this no-bake cheesecake came about. We’ve used custard creams but you could replace them with lemon crisp biscuits for that extra tang (just be mindful that the amount needed may differ when lining the pan). Adding custard powder to this cheesecake gives it that striking yellow colour. Top with whipped cream just before serving and drizzle with extra custard, if desired.

40m prep
5m cook
10 servings

10 Ingredients

* 2 x 250g packet custard cream biscuits

* 80g butter, melted

* 80ml (1/3 cup) cold water

* 1 tbsp gelatine powder

* 750g cream cheese, at room temperature, chopped

* 140g (2/3 cup) caster sugar

* 2 tsp vanilla bean paste

* 900ml thickened cream

* 50g (1/3 cup) custard powder

* 120g (1/2 cup) thick vanilla custard

7 Method / Steps

Step 1

Grease and double line (see notes) the base and side of a 20cm (base size) round springform pan with baking paper, allowing the paper to overhang 5cm above the side.

Step 2

Place half the biscuits in a food processor and process until finely crushed. Add the butter and process until combined. Use a straight-sided glass to spread and press the mixture firmly over the base of the prepared pan. Arrange the remaining biscuits around the inside of the pan to form a border, trimming to fit if necessary. Reserve remaining biscuits. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to chill.

Step 3

Place half the cold water in a small heatproof bowl. Sprinkle with half gelatine and stir until well combined. Place the bowl inside a larger heatproof bowl. Pour boiling water into the larger bowl until it reaches halfway up the side of the smaller bowl. Set aside, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until the gelatine dissolves.

Step 4

Use electric beaters to beat half the cream cheese and half the sugar in a bowl until smooth. Add the vanilla and beat until combined. Gradually add one-third of the cream, beating constantly, until well combined. Add the gelatine mixture and stir until combined. Pour mixture into prepared pan. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes or until required.

Royal AM chairperson Andile Mpisane is currently a hot topic after his baby mama and ex Sithelo Shozi accused him of physically and emotionally abusing her.

The musician, footballer, and chairman of Royal AM Football Club seems to be riddled with problems lately. A recent video of him performing in his home province KwaZulu-Natal shows the audience completely bored and uninterested — something he is not experiencing for the first time.

According to the Twitter user who shared the video, Andile was performing at Max’s Lifestyle in Umlazi, Durban.

In the video, Andile can be seen performing one of his songs titled Makhwapheni. But, the audience is just not here for it. None of them are dancing or singing along as he performs.

This is not the first time that Andile has performed in front of a merciless crowd.

In May this year, the Umcimbi singer’s performance a club called Propaganda in Pretoria was mocked on social media. This is after the club-goers were seen staring at the 21-year-old with blank faces as he performed with his backup dancers along with blaring music.

Here are some of the tweeps’ reactions:

Poet and activist Ntsiki Mazwa also replied by saying:

“THIS is why he has to swear at the one succeeding….”

Ntsiki’s comment came after Sithelo shared damning audio clips and pictures alleging that Andile had been abusive during their relationship. In one of the phoncalls, which the DJ and influencer recorded, Andike is hard telling her that she would never amount to anything and she will alwats be beneath him.
