“72 trafficked Zim women yet to be rescued”— Senate President

$

President of Senate, Mabel Chinomona has urged women to seek credible and adequate information regarding diaspora jobs as human trafficking cases are on the increase.

Chinomona told delegates attending the 34th Forum of Women Parliamentarians (the Root Causes of Human Trafficking and Ensuring Survivor Centered Anti-Trafficking Legislation and its Enforcement) during the ongoing 145th Inter Parliamentary Assembly in Kigali Rwanda that 72 Zimbabwean women were yet to be rescued after they were lured to the diaspora on the pretext of getting highly rewarding employment.

“Women should be encouraged to seek adequate information before they embark on such perilous journeys. Through our representative function, as legislators we also have a responsibility to share information with our constituents about these human trafficking schemes, so that young girls and women do not fall victim,” Chinomona said, who doubles as Zanu PF Women’s League secretary for administration.

In her speech, Chinomona warned women to be alert as international trafficking syndicates use the allure of well paying jobs to attract them.

“The global scourge of women being trafficked emanates from the lure of attractive jobs outside the country. In most cases these turn out to be fake. Most of the time women find out too late their predicament after falling prey to these machinations.

“Majority of women are lured by promises of attractive, well-paying jobs offered by agents of criminal networks without realising the full nature of their future employment or the conditions in which they will work.

“In fact, most job opportunities for women migrants are in unregulated sectors such as farming, domestic and care work as well as the sex industry,” the Senate President added.

Most worryingly, according to Chinomona, trafficking in persons was part of organised crime that has continued to give law enforcement agents a torrid time as methods of smuggling people were ever evolving.

“Lack of adequate information to women plays a pivotal role in the trafficking of women and children.”

Chinomona called for more to be done to close the knowledge gap, resultantly reducing cases of human trafficking.

“Furthermore, women have less access to information on migration or job opportunities, recruitment channels and often have less preparation than men to cope with the working and living conditions in the countries of destination.

“Zimbabwe has domesticated some provisions of the international protocol on trafficking to include the criminalisation of offenders as well as enacting survivor centered provisions for victims of trafficking.

“Article 6 Paragraph 1, of the Protocol calls on Member States that, “in appropriate cases and to the extent possible under its domestic law, each State party shall protect the privacy and identity of victims of trafficking in persons, including inter alia, by making legal proceedings relating to such trafficking confidential”.

The 145th IPU Assembly is running under the theme, “Gender Equality and Gender Sensitive Parliaments As Drivers of Change For A More Resilient and Peaceful World.”

Five sex workers plying their trade in Harare’s Avenues red-light district have been charged with robbery after they reportedly accused their client of messing their sheets and forced him to pay US$800 in damages.

The suspects, Aisha Marira, Manford Ngomo, Belinda Zuze, Rutendo Chivhuta and Natasha Moyo appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi who remanded them to today for bail application.

Allegations are that on October 10 this year, the complainant Stanford Madyara proposed to Aisha, who agreed and charged him US$10 for the romp.

Later, Madyara changed his mind and proposed to Natalia. While in Natalia’s room, Aisha then accused Madyara of messing her sheets.

Together with three other sex workers who are still at large, Aisha and Natalia demanded compensation from Madyara for messing up the sheets.

They allegedly assaulted him and forcibly took his Samsung Galaxy M13 phone and US$600 from him.

The matter was reported to the police and the sex workers were arrested at Girlcourt House after he positively identified them.

One of the accused, Zuze was found still in possession of the complainant’s cellphone.

The total value of goods stolen is US$895 and US$50 was recovered.

Mzansi legendary actor Israel Matseke Zulu, who’s popularly known for his villainous roles in Yizo Yizo and Gomora set the record straight after it was reported that he is struggling to land an acting gig and he’s down and out.

The former Gomora actor Israel Matseke Zulu made headlines this week after an article in Daily Sun reported that he’s down and out, looking for a job as his leg amputation earlier this year had affected his career.

Matseke-Zulu rubbished the reports in an interview with TshisaLIVE by saying the article is bogus and he’s got a lot of projects lined up.

“I’m not down and out, I’m a hustler and I’ve been hustling. What was written is not proper. It’s a wrong statement that can destroy my other associations.

“I’m not looking for a job. I know how to find work if I want to work. Gomora, they didn’t chase me, they didn’t fire me. Any time I’m comfortable, I can go there or any other place and tell them I want a job.”

The award-winning actor Israel Matseke-Zulu first made headlines in 2021 when he exited Mzansi Magic’s Gomora.

He asked the producer to write out his character Don Buthelezi due to the “growing demands of the job” and his battle with gangrene which led to his left leg being amputated.

Matseke-Zulu added in his interview that he’s a talented MC, kwaito artist, and brand ambassador, who’s now producing a film and is about to release his kwaito single on 31 October and an album later.

“After the experience of cutting my leg, obviously life won’t be the same, but I’ve never appeared in a newspaper asking for donations, I’ve never gone to a podcast asking South Africans to donate for me or whatever. I don’t want fans or people to feel pity for me. I’m a multi-talented artist, I’m a big package.”

“I’m an associate producer for a big global film … they will be shocked when they see. My music is very hot, it’s a killer album. I’ve never been so confident as I am now.”

A 37 year old man who admitted to raping his 11-year-old daughter several times but blamed it on “demons” was on Wednesday sentenced to 24 years’ imprisonment.

The Sasolburg regional court sentenced the 37-year-old man from Zamdela after he was found guilty of raping his daughter between August 1 2020 and November 15 last year.

“The father, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, started raping the complainant when she 11 years old,” National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said.

He said the rapes took place when the mother was not at home.

Shuping said the mother realised that her daughter’s school performance had deteriorated and her behaviour at home had changed.

The daughter explained what her father was doing to her and the mother reported the incident.

“In court, the father admitted that he has been raping his daughter, but he blamed the incidents on demons and told the court he was possessed ,” Shuping said.

The prosecution had asked for a prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment for rape. The defence asked the accused to be given a lesser sentence because he showed remorse by pleading guilty.

Police trainee fired for stammering

A trainee police officer, Vengai Chikurungeni, was discharged from the job after he was deemed unfit for policing duties for stammering.

And luck has not been on the side of the ex-constable, who also had his appeal against Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) bosses squashed by the High Court for approaching the court late.

Chikurungeni, who was attached at Morris Depot, dragged police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga and the Police Service Commission to court challenging unfair dismissal.

His employer, according to court papers, informed him he had serious communication problems, which would be an obstacle in discharging his duties.

Chikurungeni, however, filed his application for review after the stipulated time had lapsed at law.

He was supposed to file his appeal within eight weeks from the day of his dismissal, but only approached the courts way after that period.

“Rule 62 of the High Court Rules, 2021 deals with reviews. In particular r (62) (4) provides: (4) Any proceedings by way of review shall be instituted within eight weeks of the termination of the suit, action or proceedings in which the irregularity or illegality complained of is alleged to have occurred: Provided that the court may for good cause shown extend the time.

“Accordingly, it is trite that an application for review must be filed within eight (8) weeks of the termination of the suit, action or proceedings in which the irregularity or illegality complained of is alleged to have occurred.

“The applicant averred that on the 31st of January 2022 he was called by Inspector Gwaka who gave him a letter of termination of employment which was backdated or dated 28th December 2021, and he signed it.

“Other than his mere say so, he could not provide proof of his averments. On the other hand, the respondents managed to produce documentary evidence capturing the proceedings leading to the discharge of the applicant.

“In particular the respondents produced evidence by way of a Radio dated 23 December 2021 advising Chikurungeni of the decision to discharge him from the Police Service. Going by that document the applicant was advised of his fate as early as the 23 of December 2021,”said the judge.

He ruled, “The application is dismissed for failure to comply with the Rules and the applicant is to pay costs on the ordinary scale.”

Chikurungeni was attested in the ZRP, which falls under the Police Service Commission, on August 27, 2021 as a trainee.

He was undergoing training at Morris Depot.

Court papers show that in September 2021 appellant was called by Inspector Gwaka who told him that he was not fit to be a police officer since he was a stammerer.

The following month he was called by the Depot Commandant who asked if he was a stammer, and he confirmed that.

In December 2021 he was summoned by a Dr. Nyakudya who said that he wanted to examine if his condition would allow him to remain in the police service.

He was duly examined and told results will be communicated later.

On January 31 this year, appellant was called by Inspector Gwaka who gave him a letter of termination of employment which was “backdated or dated” 28th December 2021 and was asked to sign it.

He complied, but later decided to challenge his employer’s decision to discharge him under the stated circumstances.

His employer opposed the application and said he filed his appeal late and did not seek condonation.

Chikurungeni denied that he was discharged in December 2021 and averred that he was asked to sign a backdated document but could not provide proof.

“My wife has spent more weeks at #1 this decade than AKA, Black Motion & DJ Zinhle combined… It’s sad to see Kiernan making fake radio charts on Wednesday because he was #1 up to Tuesday & the chart is from Friday to Thursday each week, where he last topped the chart with FRE,” the critic wrote.

Prince Zulu’s housemate tells court he rejected ‘threesome s3x’ offer

Nkosi Msimang, the housemate of the late Prince Lethukuthula Zulu, told the high court in Johannesburg that one of the women accused of murdering Zulu had offered to join him and another accused in a bedroom rendezvous.

Msimang told the court that while sleeping with Portia Molla, Margaret Koaile, 42, accused number 3, walked into the bedroom and started flashing her private parts at him.

“She wanted to join us and I rejected her offer. I can’t remember what happened next because I passed out,” he said.

Earlier, Msimang told the court he had mixed the identities of Molla and Gontse Tlhoele, accused number 2. A day before, he gave testimony that he had slept with Tlhoele.

“If the court allows, I would like to rectify that I had mixed the identities of accused number 2 and number 4. In my testimony, where I mentioned accused 2, it was accused number 4,” he said.

According to Msimang, he realised his error only when he arrived home on Tuesday after giving testimony.

“I went through the photos of the accused that I found in an online article and that’s when I realised my mistake. Accused 4 has gained a lot of weight from the last time I saw her and she is also lighter now in complexion,” he said.

That very mix-up is what the defence tried to use to discredit his testimony.

Advocate Pheane Lebea for Koaile and Molla told Msimang that he is not a credible witness and asked him if he was telling the court what he imagined or what he knows happened on the day he and the deceased were with his clients.

Msimang maintained he was telling the court what he knows happened.

Lebea then asked him how he could mix up the identities of the two women. He also maintained his client, Molla, had lost weight since her incarceration and not gained weight as suggested by Msimang.

Lebea went to the testimony of Ntando Hove, a witness and the neighbour of Msimang and Zulu.

Hove was one of the people who were first on the scene after the discovery of Zulu’s body.

“The witness said you woke up naked and went to the bathroom in that state. He said you were disorientated and you looked confused. This is not what you told the court. Your version is that you woke up and wrapped yourself with a towel, before going to the bedroom of the deceased,” Lebea said, adding that those were some of the points that made him conclude that Msimang was not a credible witness.

Lebea also put it to Msimang that when he went with his client to their flat in Northwold to fetch money so they could settle the bill, he was constantly on the phone during the drive back.

“My client will tell this court that at some point, you stopped under the bridge where you gave money (between R400 and R600) to an African male and he gave you a parcel in exchange. The whole thing happened within a minute,” he said.

Msimang, however, dismissed the say as untrue and said he never stopped under any bridge.

Earlier. Msimang told the court that the four women had stolen R60,000 cash that was kept in a black bag. The legal representatives of the four women all dismissed this as untrue.

Advocate Vincent Soko for Tlhoele, [accused 2] put it to him that his client said the only money they found in the house was actually R3,000, of which his client only received R750.

“Accused 4 came out of a room and asked accused 2 to go to the room where accused 1 was. They found accused 1 and the deceased having sex and they then left the deceased’s room and went to the lounge. Accused 2 then opened a drawer and money fell out. She says an argument then broke out between them. Accused 2 will dispute that they took R60,000 from your flat,” Soko said.

The trial will resume on Friday when the state is expected to call more witnesses.

South Africa’s Tharisa begins $391 million Zimbabwe platinum mine build

South Africa’s Tharisa Plc plans to spend $391 million on developing a 194,000 ounce per year platinum group metal (PGM) mine in Zimbabwe, chief executive Phoevos Pouroulis said on Wednesday.

Tharisa, a co-producer of chrome concentrates and PGMs in South Africa, owns 70% of Karo Mining Holdings, developer of the Karo PGM project on Zimbabwe’s Great Dyke, about 100 kilometres south-west of the capital Harare. Its site is close to Impala Platinum’s Zimplats operations.

Pouroulis said the ground-breaking for the first phase of the Karo mine would take place in December 2022, with mine construction expected to be completed by July 2024.

The Karo project is an open pit mine which would deliver the first mineral ore to the mill in the next two years, Pouroulis said during a briefing on the project.

“We are fully licenced and permitted and we believe this is a low-risk approach to any mining opportunity…being large-scale, open pit, low cost and adopting a multi-phase development approach,” he added.

He said that the Karo mine production plan had been upgraded to 194,000 ounces of PGMs per year, from 150,000 ounces initially.

Karo Mining Holdings managing director Bernard Pryor said the company was in talks with renewable energy firm Total Eren for the development of a 300-megawatt solar plant to supply the mine with power. Zimbabwe has an electricity generation deficit that often impacts mining operations.

Some 1,000 jobs would be created at Karo during mine development, with a further 1,000 created when the mine is operational, Pryor said.

Pryor said $260 million for the mine development would be raised through bank loans, while $50 million will be raised on Zimbabwe’s United States dollar-denominated Victoria Falls Stock Exchange through a bond issuance. Tharisa would raise the balance through leveraging its existing assets, he said.

South African dancer, Zodwa Wabantu has reportedly defended her decision to disclose information of her apparent 11 abortions

Speaking to a local publication, Zodwa Wabantu said her decision to have that many abortions was because she was idiotic and did not use a condom. However, she does not regret her decision to terminate the pregnancies.

She made this revelation on the latest episode of Zodwa Wabantu: Uncensored. She had to do a cleansing ceremony but revealed they were oy fr her 4 aborted kids.

“I had four abortions. So me to you, the number of abortions I’ve done in my entire life is about 11,” she said.

Following the backlash, Zodwa told News24 she had zero regrets, “I had the abortions because I was stout and didn’t condomise. I don’t have any regrets. There’s no one who can judge me or put judgment on my life. My truth is with God; I can die anytime if I’ve told my truth.”

She then added, “People should be checking themselves out.”

It’s always scandal after scandal for the reality star. It was recently revealed that she had broken up with her lover Ben 10 Olefile ‘Ricardo’ Mpudi and that they had protection orders against each other.

She admitted to Sunday World that she had broken things off with him and that she went to the police because he refused to vacate her home. “They gave me a form and gave him a form too to fill. I have not completed the form, because after returning home from court, I slept because I was tired. I will complete the form and submit it on Monday,” she said. “He is here, even now. He is in another room and I’m in another room [of the house]….I guess I will only know when the [restraint] order is served on me.”

This would not be the first time their relationship took center stage. Earlier this year City Press reported that Zodwa and Ricardo got into a fight which had the police intervene because he refused to pay for his Uber.

“She came to the station asking police to help her as she was afraid that her boyfriend might physically harm her. So, the police went to her residential area and managed to calm the situation down. Later the boyfriend’s family was called and they apologized to Zodwa, telling her that he is not a violent person,” said a police officer to the publication.

Zodwa always advised fans to never let just anybody into their lives.

“Guys do not allow bad things to happen to you. Some parts of your life, your soul and energy, they are for you, keep it to yourself. Do not allow it! Know who you are when you are alone, because all of these people come to take from you.

“Do not tell me about money or material things, people just want to live, they want your energy and your intelligence. Then you end up empty and not knowing yourself or who you are. Do not be easily available to all these places protect your soul,” she said.

17 appear in court over Mupedzanhamo violence

Seventeen people yesterday appeared in court charged with public violence that rocked Mupedzanhamo market since Friday.

The accused, who were represented by Brighton Sadowera appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi.

Mangosi remanded them in custody to today for bail application.

On October 10, the accused persons, who were in two groups, allegedly went on a rampage in a fight for the control of Mupedzanhamo vending stalls.

It is alleged that they threw stones at each other, blocked traffic and stoned moving vehicles, injuring innocent people.

It is alleged that the accused persons were arrested at the crime scene.

In an unrelated matter, the City of Harare has resolved to reopen Mupedzanhamo market, that is going to accommodate 1 800 vendors, next week and Chishawasha grounds before year end.

In an interview with NewsDay, City of Harare Small to Medium Enterprises chairperson councillor Denford Ngadziore said: “We are working with all stakeholders involved and we are in our final preparatory stage to reopen Mupedzanhamo market by next week.

“The other thing is that there is this issue of politicisation of Mbare. There is too much tension in Mbare, so that tension needs stakeholders’ engagement. People who are fighting in Mbare are all Zimbabweans, we understand they come from different political parties, so what we are trying to do is to bring them together.”

In a statement yesterday, the City of Harare also said it would accommodate 3 500 traders at Chishawasha grounds before year end.

“Before year end, we hope to open Chishawasha grounds market which was fenced off with metal mesh years ago to accommodate about 3 500 traders,” the statement read.

Picture of a woman whose decomposed body was found hidden in ceiling of boyfriend’s home

The badly decomposed body found stuffed in the ceiling of a house in Balfour, Mpumalanga, has been identified as that of 34-year-old Nosipho Caroline Mthombeni.

Mthombeni’s body appears to have been in the house occupied by her alleged boyfriend for some time.

It was the alertness of the man’s other “partner” that led to Mthombeni’s body finally being discovered.

Speaking to a local newspaper, Mthombeni’s grieving aunt Nomvula Maya said her daughter Pamela had confronted the man weeks after Nosipho’s disappearance.

Pamela said he “should stop making things hard for her family and just hand over her body so they could bury her”. But he insisted he knew nothing about her whereabouts, despite a stench in the house.

After the confrontation, the man disappeared.

Three days later, on October 5, Mpumalanga police made the harrowing discovery.

Police spokesperson Brig Selvy Mohlala said officers responded to a complaint about a bad odour coming from the house. On arrival they “found a lady who indicated that she had moved into the house about a month [earlier] to stay with the father of her child”.

“Police began check[ing] the house to determine where the odour was coming from. At first, the ceiling trapdoor did not show clearly what was inside. However members proceeded to the next room and broke the ceiling, [discovering] a human body wrapped with some clothes.

“Emergency services personnel were summoned to the scene but the body was in such a decomposed state that the gender could not be determined at that time. However later, through the shoes that the victim was wearing as well as the nail polish and other features, it was determined that it is a female. A murder case [was opened],” Mohlala told TimesLIVE.

Police are still searching for the man.

Mthombeni’s heartbroken family has opened up about the events leading up to the shocking discovery.

Maya said questions were raised about her whereabouts several days before the body was found.

Mthombeni’s friends had reached out to Maya’s daughter Phumzile when they failed to make contact with the missing woman.

“Her friends asked, ‘when last did you speak to Nosipho?’ and my daughter told them that [Nosipho] wasn’t someone we spoke to frequently. Her friends then [revealed that] it’s been two months since they’ve been able to reach her on WhatsApp, via cellphone or Facebook.

“We didn’t take it seriously … Later [another family member] called my daughter and told her she too got a call from [the same] friends and also asked about Nosipho’s whereabouts,” said Maya.

Phumzile and a relative went to the man’s house to look for her but he said Nosipho had left for Secunda to work.

He allegedly disappeared a day after this confrontation, claiming he was “going to make payments of some accounts”.

Maya returned to the house, twice, to look for Mthombeni but was met by a woman who had moved in.

The troubled aunt said that while there, she noticed what appeared to be a blood stain on the carpet but was told it was caused by children.

A suspicious Maya then decided to speak to Mthombeni’s mother, who confirmed she last saw her daughter on August 26 when she had dropped off some vegetables on her way to church.

Mthombeni’s family and the woman in the house alerted police to the situation.

A devastated Maya described the family’s pain of finding out that the bad smell encountered on her visits emanated from a decomposed body.

“We weren’t allowed to see the body … [We didn’t] find a body but a ghost,” she said, her voice breaking.

Maya said the family knew little about Mthombeni’s relationship with the man, only that they apparently started dating in November 2021.

The family described her as a “sweet girl” who was reserved and humble.

“You wouldn’t find her all over the place … she was very pretty as well,” Maya said.

Asked what her family hoped for once the man was found, Maya said all they wanted was to know what happened.

Johannesburg s3x workers live in fear after gruesome murders

Sex workers operating in downtown Johannesburg on the corners of Anderson and End Streets have spoken candidly about the hardships they face there.

“We have never been safe here. Some of the clients threaten us with guns or knives,” the women told TimesLIVE.

They ply their trade less than 2km from where the bodies of six women, believed to be sex workers, were discovered on Sunday.

A 47-year-old sex worker and mother of three, who rents a flat there with a friend, charges clients R50 and pays R10 to use a building close to where she works.

On a busy day, she earns about R500 but since Monday business has not been going well.

She said sex workers were the victims of an assortment of crimes.

“A client can get inside [the room] with you and take out a gun or knife. We are often raped here. When you are raped, there is nothing you can do. You just keep quiet and leave. The following day you go to a clinic and get the pills to clean yourself,” she said.

The Zimbabwean woman said she had been a regular visitor to SA before deciding to stay in the country. As a child, she would visit her father, who worked in Johannesburg, during the school holidays. She later relocated to SA with her husband.

The couple stayed in Braamfontein while their children remained in Zimbabwe, but in 2007 they separated.

“I was married. The man just left the house with his cellphone and a laptop and never returned. When I went to his workplace, he told me, ‘I left the house without anything, what do you want here?’” she said.

He gave her two months’ rent and stopped communicating with her. She later met someone else, fell pregnant but that relationship ended too.

After her third pregnancy, she struggled to make ends meet and ended up on the streets as a sex worker for more than 10 years, supporting her three children in Zimbabwe.

“I realised it is better to be here on the streets, since trying to have a family wasn’t working for me,” she said.

Explaining her daily routine, she said before leaving home she prayed she would generate enough money for the day. “It also depends on your age. I am already old now. It is no longer easy to get business like before.”

On some days, she struggles to meet her R500 target. Load-shedding sometimes cuts work evenings short as the area becomes too dark for safety.

“I used to come here at 4am and leave at 8pm with that R300 or R400 but now you hardly make R200 here. Since I arrived here at 8am, I only have R80 — at this time at 1pm,” she said.

“And there will be those [clients] who complain that they don’t have money and then they pay R40 and you have to [pay] R10 to use the space at the building and you are left with R30.”

Her children are studying at home and she hopes one day they will get jobs to help her.

“We have been fighting to be in the streets — they initially [police] didn’t allow us to be here — we used to stand by the corners. It has been a struggle. It’s hard … it is painful,” she said.

She added that life on the streets was risky but necessary. “I am nothing. I am just hoping that my children finish school and help me. I can even sleep without eating anything. I do all this just to try to send the money to my kids back home but this week it has been terrible. There is no business.”

Another sex worker, a 41-year-old mother of two, walks about 3km in the mornings and late evenings to End Street from Hillbrow.

This has been her daily routine to make ends meet. She turned to sex work after losing her job during the Covid-19 lockdown.

“I stay with my children. I am a single mother and I am here to make an income for my children so that they can eat, go to school and I would be able to pay the school fees and the rent,” she said.

When she lost her job she sought help from a friend who was a sex worker. When her friend could no longer afford to help, the mother of two was on the verge of being evicted from her flat due to rental arrears.

“She [the friend] said, ‘I can’t be supporting you and your children, you must come and work with us or find a plan to look after your children.’

“That’s when I decided that I should come here rather than sleeping on the streets or losing my children. It is better to come here and do what my friend does and if she can do it as a woman then what will stop me?” she asked.

The children don’t know what she does for a living but do know she works, brings home food, pays their rent and school fees.

She agreed her occupation was risky but she had to risk her life for her children’s sake. “We have children to look after. At the end of the month, they need rent. I must come here whether I like it or not,” she said

The single mother pays rent of R2,700 and tries to make money before it gets dark so she can be home with her children. She sometimes leaves the area at 9pm and walks home.

“Our lives are not safe at all but we have to take the risk. If I get something early I leave but it happens that a day goes by without getting anything. It is very difficult when you go back home without any money.”

The two sex workers said they did not believe the young man arrested for the alleged premeditated murder of six women was capable of committing such a crime.

They had never come across him before.

The man made a brief appearance in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court on Tuesday.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the accused was charged with one count of murder though six bodies were discovered.

“At this stage, we only have evidence that links him to one murder,” she told media outside the court.

His identity may not be revealed before an identity parade is held.

Provincial police spokesperson Brig Brenda Muridili said on Wednesday the victims were yet to be identified.

“None of the victims have been positively identified by next of kin,” she said.

Lawyer representing ZEPHA says SA government wants to depopulate the country by getting rid of Zimbabweans

Advocate Simba Chitando, a lawyer who represents the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit Holders Association (ZEPHA) said the South African government wanted to depopulate its country by getting rid of Zimbabweans.

The Home Affairs Ministry last year decided not to renew the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEP) beyond the end of December this year, a decision that is likely to affect more than 178 000 Zimbabwean nationals who live, study and work legally in South Africa with the permit.

But Chitando who is representing ZEPHA in the SA High Court argues that authorities wanted to depopulate the country by getting rid of Zimbabwean nationals.

He likened the move to the last Mfecane (Zulu: “The Crushing”) which was led by Shaka the Zulu between 1787 and 1828.

He cited Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi as the leader of the current Mfecane.

“Hate groups have unlawfully surrounded hospitals, with no police intervention, to prevent Zimbabwean nationals from accessing medical care,” Chitando said.

“Southern Africa is currently the scene of a modern-day Mfecane [‘the crushing’], and Zimbabweans are the victims.

“The last Mfecane was led by Shaka Zulu between 1787 and 1828, who systematically depopulated South Africa’s minorities.

“Dr Motsoaledi leads the post-apartheid Mfecane directed at Zimbabweans by weaponising the department of home affairs and the new private army of ‘green shirts’, euphemistically called the Border Management Authority, targeting Zimbabwean nationals to depopulate the country.”

An estimated 178 000 Zimbabweans have until June next year to apply for alternative visas, leave the country voluntarily or be deported.
