Mane scores as Liverpool beat Norwich

Mane scores as Liverpool beat Norwich. Sadio Mane came off the bench to score the winner with 12 minutes remaining, expertly taking down skipper Jordan Henderson’s raking pass and smashing in at the near post. Liverpool’s unstoppable charge towards their first top-flight title in 30 years continued by edging a narrow victory over bottom-of-the-table Norwich.

It means Jurgen Klopp’s side need just five more wins from their remaining 12 games to guarantee their first Premier League title, having dropped just two points all campaign.

Chances were at a premium in a blustery first half, but Liverpool ramped up the pressure in the second period – Canaries goalkeeper Tim Krul making a stunning double save to deny Mohamed Salah’s low shot and Naby Keita’s close-range follow-up.

Having been pegged back for a long period, Norwich could have scored on the counter-attack as Alex Tettey’s strike from an angle caught Alisson by surprise at his near post but the effort rattled the foot of the upright.

But Senegal international Mane – who missed the last two games through a hamstring injury – proved to be the difference having entered the action on the hour mark.

Reds just keep on winning

It looked for a while that it may be a frustrating day for Liverpool at Carrow Road, misplacing a number of passes in the final third and being restricted to long-range efforts.

Keita’s drive was tipped over the crossbar by Krul, while efforts from Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were comfortable for the Dutch goalkeeper to deal with.

When the marauding Trent Alexander-Arnold dragged a shot wide from the edge of the box after just 13 seconds, a routine win looked to be on the cards, but the Reds had to battle hard once more to go a mammoth 25 points clear of champions Manchester City.

To say Liverpool have dominated the division is an understatement – they have annihilated all in front of them and the numbers make staggering reading:

  • Liverpool are now unbeaten in 43 league games, closing in on Arsenal’s all-time record of 49.
  • They have collected a remarkable 102 points from the past 105 available.
  • The Reds have picked up 35 wins from their last 36 games – a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in October the only blemish.
  • They have won 17 games in a row – one shy of Manchester City’s record – and kept 10 clean sheets in their past 11 games.

The result also means 76 points after 26 games is the best record at this juncture in the history of Europe’s top five leagues – something even the continent’s great sides including La Liga’s Barcelona, Juventus of Serie A, Bundesliga’s Bayern Munich and Ligue 1’s Paris St-Germain were unable to achieve.

The defending European champions go into Tuesday’s last-16 first-leg tie at Atletico Madrid in flawless form and Klopp’s side will take some stopping from reaching their third consecutive final, as they aim for a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble.

So near yet so far for Norwich

Daniel Farke’s side remains anchored to the foot of the table, seven points from safety and are staring at an immediate return to the Championship.

They display some attractive football at times, playing out from the back which almost proved costly on a couple of occasions, but failing to hold out means they have conceded a joint league-high 48 goals.

Had they taken their chances, they would have claimed a spectacular victory against all the odds, with Lukas Rupp left ruing what might have been.

The German midfielder broke the offside trap in the first half and when faced one-on-one with Alisson, inexplicably decided to square the ball towards Teemu Pukki instead of shooting and the Brazilian goalkeeper managed to claw the pass away.

The lively Todd Cantwell struck the side-netting, while Tettey’s low, drilled strike hit the upright.

Ton up for Mane – the stats

  • Liverpool have opened the scoring in each of their past 14 Premier League meetings with Norwich City – no side has ever scored the opening goal in more consecutive games versus another in the competition’s history (Chelsea also 14 v Portsmouth).
  • Norwich have only won one of their past 13 Premier League games (D5 L7) and have failed to score in back-to-back league matches for the first time since November 2019.
  • Liverpool have kept a clean sheet in 10 of their past 11 Premier League matches, this after having only kept one shutout in the previous 11 such games before this.
  • Sadio Mane scored the 100th goal of his English club career in all competitions, scoring 25 for Southampton and 75 for Liverpool.
  • Mane’s goal was his 57th in the Premier League for Liverpool, but the first coming as a substitute.
  • Jordan Henderson has assisted five Premier League goals this season; only in 2014-15 (nine) and 2013-14 (seven) has he provided more in a single league season in his professional career.
  • Both of Liverpool’s past two Premier League games have been goalless at half-time; only two of their first 24 such matches of the season had been 0-0 at the break before this.
  • Norwich failed to attempt a single shot in the first half of a league game for the first time under Daniel Farke, and the first time in any league match overall since April 2014 v Manchester United.

What next?

Norwich travel to Wolves next Sunday in the Premier League (kick-off 14:00 GMT), while Liverpool are in European action on Tuesday, followed by a Premier League game at Anfield against West Ham next Monday (20:00).

You get famous songs, and then you get “quoted in a sermon” famous songs. DJ Zinhle’s track Umlilo was a massive hit in 2019, even winning Song of the Year. The song, which features Mvzzle and Rethabile, still won’t let the people breathe in 2020 and was recently quoted during a sermon.

DJ Zinhle

In a video shared on social media this week, a preacher is seen encouraging the congregation to listen to DJ Zinhle on the song, later busting a move as she bursts into song.

While fans were ready to put on their uniforms and join the church, Zinhle took to Twitter to share how the moment made her “heart sooooo happy. The song’s lyrics even made it onto a cake apparently being sold at a Shoprite outlet in Durban last year.
If there was ever any doubt the song will continue to do the things in 2020, Zinhle told fans she had spoken to God and He said the year was hers for the taking. I just spoke to God and apparently 2020 is mine too,” she wrote on Twitter.

The accident occurred just after Martin Spur near Kadoma. Soul Jah Love was lucky to escape from the wreck with only minor visible injuries. His two colleagues who were travelling with the musician also appear to have escaped from the crash with relatively minor injuries. The three were travelling for a show in Kwekwe.

Minister Mutodi commemorates MDC leaders’ death: Morgan Tsvangirai was a sellout and a coward

Minister Mutodi commemorates MDC leaders’ death: Morgan Tsvangirai was a sellout and a coward. Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Service Energy Mutodi marked the second anniversary of the death of MDC founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai by calling him a sellout and a coward. While many are remembering the former Prime Minister, Mutodi launched into an unrestrained and unprovoked attack on the man who died two years back on Valentine’s day.

Writing on social media site Twitter, seemingly out of the blue, Mutodi said. As we reflect on the life of Mr Morgan Tsvangirai, we believe he was a sell-out who fought to reverse the gains of the liberation struggle. For inviting sanctions, we view him as really a sell-out & a coward who believed whites are a better race than blacks.

Ironically, many members of the ruling Zanu PF party including President Emmerson Mnangagwa himself, have been pains praising Tsvangirai ever since his degree. Zanu PF senior officials have often praised Tsvangirai particularly when they went to criticize the current leader of the opposition MDC Alliance party Nelson Chamisa.

Surprisingly, when Tsvangirai died in 2018, the very next day, Mutodi himself, wrote a very long post advocating for Tsvangirai to be declared a National Here. Part of the post which is titled “10 REASONS WHY TSVANGIRAI MUST BE HONOURED WITH HERO STATUS“ reads,

Morgan Tsvangirai was a brave Zimbabwean man who spent much of his adult life fighting for the democratization of his country. He founded an opposition party called the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in 1999 that had widespread support from mainly workers’ unions…

…Apart from his fight for democracy that he did for his entire life, Tsvangirai should be honoured for agreeing to be part of the 2009-2013 Inclusive government that brought relief to many suffering Zimbabweans.

Energy Mutodi

…Please take note that the other 5 reasons are technical and strategic reasons that may not be displayed on this platform. Politicians, political analysts and social media users were not amused by Mutodi’s utterances and quickly let the minister know what they think of him. Below are some of the responses to Mutodi’s post.

I am not sure what you think you are going to achieve through this post. Aside from being wildly inaccurate all you have done it create hurt and anguish for those who respected him.

And as for those who “invite sanctions”; your ruinous party has done the most to invite sanctions. – David Coltart

5 years in prison for internet posts that may cause unrest

$

5 years in prison for internet posts that may cause unrest. Ethiopia, for decades one of the most tightly controlled states in Africa, has undergone huge political change since reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office two years ago.

Ethiopia’s parliament passed a law on Thursday imposing jail terms for people whose internet posts stir unrest, a move the government says is needed to prevent violence ahead of elections but which the United Nations says will stifle free speech.

But even as Abiy has freed political prisoners and journalists and lifted a ban on opposition parties, the authorities have struggled to contain a surge in ethnic violence. An election this year is seen as the biggest test yet of whether his ambitious political reforms can stick.

The new law permits fines of up to 100,000 Ethiopian birr ($3,000) and imprisonment for up to five years for anyone who shares or creates social media posts that are deemed to result in violence or disturbance of public order.

Some 297 lawmakers who were present in the chamber voted in favour of the bill while just 23 were opposed. “Ethiopia has become a victim of disinformation,” lawmaker Abebe Godebo said. “The country is a land of diversity and this bill will help to balance those diversities.”

Several of the lawmakers who opposed the bill said it violates a constitutional guarantee of free speech.

Abiy, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year for his reconciliation with Ethiopia’s neighbour and longtime foe Eritrea, has pledged that this year’s election will be free and fair. The nation of 108 million people has regularly held elections since 1995, but only one, in 2005, was competitive.

The law was first endorsed by Abiy’s cabinet in November. At the time, the U.N.’s special rapporteur on freedom of expression urged authorities to reconsider it, warning it would worsen already high ethnic tensions and possibly fuel further violence.

International rights groups say it creates a legal means for the government to muzzle opponents.

“Politicians or activists or others will be forced to be cautious, afraid that their speech might fall into the definition of hate speech or can be considered as false information,” said Amnesty International’s Ethiopia researcher Fisseha Tekle.

ED: No need to panic about Coronavirus

$

ED: No need to panic about coronavirus. This comes as China’s chief envoy to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Gou Shaochun, made assurances that trade and economic trade between the two countries would only be temporarily affected by the virus, which has killed more than 1 000 people in mainland China. To date, the virus has not been detected in Zimbabwe and no Zimbabweans living in China have contracted the disease.

Zimbabweans do not need to panic as authorities are taking precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) into the country, while authorities in China have the situation under control, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said.

Responding to our Harare Bureau at a Press briefing after meeting with Ambassador Guo at his Munhumutapa offices yesterday, President Mnangagwa said the country’s adherence to World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines were likely to be complemented by travel restrictions imposed by China between Harare and Beijing.

“From the time of the breakout, there are conditions by the World Health Organisation, universal conditions which require that we take measures, and we have taken those measures and we have been able to acquire some of the necessary equipment to do the checking; and so far in Zimbabwe, we have not recorded any positive cases and we are happy that this is happening.

Also the authorities in China have restricted the travel of people from China to Zimbabwe or Zimbabwe to China. So these things, again, have been implemented and they are contributing to the status which is there now, which is positive (for us) and we believe that we are in control of the situation.”

President Mnangagwa said it was encouraging that fatalities and new infections of the disease were declining.

“The current indications are that new cases are declining, as the facts now show. Earlier on, the deaths were rising, but now there is an indication of the deaths declining. Also, the volume of the number of people leaving the hospital after being cured is also increasing, which is indicative of the success the authorities in China are achieving to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Then of course worldwide we have very few new cases that come up. The few that have been reported are not increasing.”

Authorities would remain vigilant to prevent the disease from spreading into the country, he said. President Mnangagwa said Ambassador Guo was also “thankful” for the letter that he had sent to his counterpart, President Xi Jinping, to express solidarity and sympathy over COVID-19.

“The Ambassador was thankful that I wrote to my counterpart, the President of the People of China, giving Zimbabwe’s support to the challenges arising from the outbreak of the virus. He was conveying to me that gratitude. When the coronavirus outbreak happened in China, we were extremely concerned about it and I, as President, sent a letter of support to my brother President Xi Jinping and to the people of China that the people of Zimbabwe sympathise with you and we expect that everything possible would be done and we are happy with what the leadership of China have done so.”

The President was also apprised about global challenges that had arisen after the outbreak of the disease, including steps that were being taken by China to contain it as well as minimise casualties.

While there have been concerns that the disease outbreak might affect ongoing multibillion-dollar projects that are being implemented by China in Zimbabwe, Ambassador Guo said the impact on trade and commerce would be minimal.

“Coronavirus has brought some temporary impact to China’s economy but we are very confident that we have enough ability and enough policies to manage the situation and minimise the impact. We are very confident that we will maintain the fundamentals for China’s long-term economic development. So the trade between China and Zimbabwe will continue to develop for the interests of people of our two countries. I am very sure that the impact of coronavirus on people-to-people exchange and trade is very temporary and we will overcome it.”

Ambassador Gou also commended quarantine measures adopted by Zimbabwe.

He said: “Its very science-based, rationale, reasonable and very effective. That is why so far there are no confirmed cases in Zimbabwe. You can see that in China we have adopted the most comprehensive measures to prevent the spread of the virus, and it works. Less than one per cent of the confirmed cases have happened in China. So China is fighting against the battle not only for itself but the rest of the world, we need understanding and co-operation from all countries.”

Zimbabwe and China enjoy strong ties after the two countries recently upgraded their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Lecturer involved in a s.e.x-for-marks scandal

$

Lecturer involved in a s.e.x-for-marks scandal. Mr Gerald Kwinjo, a lecturer in the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department, was found guilty of s.e.xual misconduct after a disciplinary hearing constituted by the institution. Mr Kwinjo was accused of “making unwelcome s.e.xual advances or verbal or physical conduct of a s.e.xual nature which has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with the individual’s work or academic performance, undermine job security or creating an intimidating, hostile, abusive or offensive learning environment.”

A lecturer at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) told a first-year student that she would fail her course if she refused his sexual advances, while he also tried to turn her into his “pimp”, as he asked her to scout for female students for him and fellow lecturers to prey on.

Mr Kwinjo’s alleged victim is a first-year student (name supplied) studying towards a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical and Process Systems Engineering. According to the aggrieved student, represented by Dube-Tachiona and Tsvangirai Legal Practitioners at the hearing, Mr Kwinjo got her phone number against her will and went on to pester her for s.e.xual favours.

“On several occasions, Mr Kwinjo requested our client’s cellphone number and she persistently refused to give him until she felt threatened and pressurised to give him. On several dates, the lecturer proposed to our client that the two of them go swimming and beer drinking as well as dates, invitations which she refused, thus inviting anger and scorn from him,” read part of the allegations made against Mr Kwinjo.

In WhatsApp chats that Sunday News is in possession of, Mr Kwinjo repeatedly asked his victim to come for beer drinking sessions and went to the extent of requesting that she abandons school work so she can be with him. According to the victim’s lawyers, such incidents had led to a breakdown in the relationship between lecturer and student, leading to Mr Kwinjo’s threat that he would fail her on the courses she was taking.

“Mr Kwinjo went to the extent of instructing our client to find girls on his behalf and on behalf of other lecturers who are his friends, thus attempting to turn our client into a s.e.xual pimp. Recently, Mr Kwinjo advised our client that because she refused to co-operate, he would fail her in the course he teaches (Drawing). Despite the fact that she had been passing all her coursework, she was thus failed because she refused his s.e.xual advances, refused to act as his pimp and refused to go on drinking sprees with him.”

In an emailed response to the Sunday News, the Harare Institute of Technology confirmed that Mr Kwinjo had been found guilty, although the institution’s director of communications and international relations Mr Tinashe Mutema was non-committal about the punishment that had been handed to Mr Kwinjo.

His victim’s lawyers had expressed fears that should he be given a slap on the wrist he would go on to revenge and victimise her again as she was still only in her first year.

“This note confirms that the accused was found guilty of breaching the Harare Institute of Technology Code of Conduct when he was charged with making unwelcome sexual advances or verbal or physical conduct of a s.e.xual nature which has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with the individual’s work or academic performance, undermining job security or creating an intimidating, hostile, abusive or offensive learning environment.

The decision of the disciplinary committee has been formally communicated to the accused. The university has advised the complainant to report the case to the Zimbabwe Republic Police. That the Harare Institute of Technology hauled Mr Kwinjo to a disciplinary hearing process is testimony that the university strongly abhors s.e.xual harassment.”

Hwange s.e.x pest jailed

Hwange s.e.x pest jailed. Changwenta Zulu (27) who was initially facing three counts of rape was, however, convicted of a lesser charge of having s.e.xual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl. A man from Jambezi in Hwange District under Chief Shana has been slapped with a six-year jail term after being convicted of having s.e.xual intercourse with a minor.

Hwange regional magistrate Mr Collet Ncube ruled that the evidence had shown that the s.e.xual intercourse was consensual before sentencing Zulu to six years imprisonment. Two years of the sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Zulu denied raping the 15-year-old girl arguing that the s.e.x was consensual as he was in a love affair with her.

“Your worship, I did not rape the complainant, we are actually in love and the s.e.x was consensual. In all the times we slept together she agreed to it I did not force her as alleged by the State,” said Zulu.

The court heard that during the month of June 2018, Zulu asked the girl who had visited his homestead to accompany him to Milonga Clinic. Before leaving he called her into his bedroom hut where he pushed her to the ground and had s.e.xual intercourse with her without her consent. After the act, Zulu instructed her not to reveal the matter to anyone.

On another occasion during the same month, the complainant was sent to Zulu’s homestead to collect a blanket. Upon collecting it Zulu offered to accompany her before suggesting that they use a shortcut. On the way, he suddenly grabbed her by the shoulder, pushed her to the ground and had s.e.x without her consent.

Zulu repeated the offence again in July 2018 where he waylaid the complainant after convincing her to use a shortcut after she was sent to collect relish at his homestead. The complainant did not reveal the matter to anyone until the matter came to light when her aunt discovered that she was pregnant.

The aunt reported the matter to the police leading to Zulu’s arrest. Mr Vumizulu Mbudi Mangena prosecuted.

US-based Zimbabwe-born actor who is on Vampire Diaries and The Flash reveals he is gay. Rick Cosnett, Zimbabwe-born actor known for his roles in ‘Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Flash’, recently came out of the closet and revealed that he is gay.

He declared the truth of his true s.e.xual orientation in a one-minute long video on Instagram, reported New York Post. In the video, the 36-year-old said: “Hi, everyone. Dramatic pause … I’m gay.”

“I just wanted everyone to know because I’ve made a promise to myself to, uh, live my truth every day.”

He further continued: “I just wanted everyone to know because I’ve made a promise to myself to, uh, live my truth every day and sometimes that is a really hard thing to do when you have all these subconscious things you don’t even know about from childhood, and from society, and from … just life.”

“So, there you go. I’m sure most of you probably knew anyway. And, yeah, that’s actually all I wanted to say,” concluded Cosnett.

According to the New York Post, the clip received a flurry of appreciative comments by his followers, including his co-actors from ‘The Flash’ movie, such as Danielle Panabaker and Candice Patton.

Plot to oust President Mnangagwa through food riots exposed

Plot to oust President Mnangagwa through food riots exposed. The Manicaland based Central Committee member who spoke to this reporter on condition of anonymity said, “There has a lot of machinations happening in the party in a bid to see Number 1 being removed by some powerful party members.

A faction of ZANU PF is plotting to fuel food riots in the country in a bid to cause a State of Emergency and subsequent the impeachment of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a ZANU PF Senior official has alleged.

“I can authoritatively reveal to you that one of the strategies being plotted of late is to use a civil uprising through fuelling impending riots over the shortage of maize meal.” The source claimed that the party members were in a spirited effort to frustrate everyone bringing maize and wheat into Zimbabwe and force people into food riots.

“If you have been following the trends you would see that the Grain Millers Association has been making efforts to assist the government in bringing maize into the country. In the recent past, you saw how the Ministry of Finance and of late ZANU PF Youths have been burning the midnight oil to destabilize and efforts by GMAZ to see that maize is availed to the market.

“The labelling of the GMAZ and its leadership under Tafadzwa Musarara as corrupt must be read in the context of the ongoing efforts to find a way to remove Number 1. As I am talking to you now, the government is planning to introduce roller meal coupons. You are going to see people queuing every day at shopping centres waiting for the roller meal to be availed.

It is during that time that some youths and war veterans will take advantage of the queues to the chaos which will generate into riots and the subsequent looting of shops and deployment of state security. The faction then plans to cause the President to declare a State of emergency and then subject him to parliament calling for impeachment.

“If the security does not move swiftly to make sure that the food procurement chain and retailing is not disturbed, the country is moving towards an organic mass implosion that will undo the efforts of the New Dispensation.” The source said.

In 2003 war veterans were fingered as the force behind Zimbabwe’s first food riots that shook the country at the time. In Bulawayo, the riots began when Jabulani Sibanda, the then provincial chairman Bulawayo whipped up his supporters to march on the Grain Marketing Board to complain at the way grain was being allocated only to chosen millers.

Reports alleged that Sibanda had been angered that he was left out of the highly profitable food distribution loop by former President Robert Mugabe. Riot police used tear gas to disperse a crowd estimated to be 4 000 people.

“What happened was a simple, spontaneous protest by the residents,” Mr Sibanda was quoted as saying by the media.

Julius Malema: Jacob Zuma too old to go to jail

Julius Malema: Jacob Zuma too old to go to jail. Speaking at the Cape Town Press Club on Friday, Malema, who was seen as a thorn on Zuma’s side in his last few years as head of state, said he didn’t necessarily believe the former leader should be jailed.

EFF leader Julius Malema believes that although former president Jacob Zuma must bring himself before a court of law on the charges he faces, he is too old to go to jail. “If there are charges against him, he must go to court and answer to those charges,” said Malema.

Zuma faces 16 trumped-up charges of fraud, money laundering, corruption and racketeering linked to 783 payments that French arms company Thales allegedly made to him in connection with the infamous arms deal in 1999.

“Jail time for an old person like that [referring Zuma] is not suitable. What kind of society have we become to jail such old people?” Malema asked. On February 4, a biased KwaZulu-Natal High Court Judge Dhaya Pillay acceded to a request from the State to issue an arrest warrant for Zuma over his non-attendance at his corruption trial.

“The purpose of jail is correctional, we correct you and send you back to society. What about Zuma is going to be corrected because he is an old man?” Malema asked, suggesting a different punishment might be more fitting.

During Zuma’s presidency, EFF MPs, including Malema himself, consistently challenged the former president in Parliament, calling for him to pay back money from his Nkandla homestead security upgrades and for him to be jailed for corruption.

Nelson Chamisa claims he did not grab power

Nelson Chamisa claims he did not grab power. Speaking at the Bulawayo Media Centre Tuesday, the MDC leader said it was “lies” that he grabbed power from Dr Khupe, as she had ditched the party, and was not attending meetings after a rift developed between her and Tsvangirai.

Leader of the main opposition party, Nelson Chamisa claims he did not grab power in the MDC but stepped in after a vacuum was created following Dr Thokozani Khupe’s six-month absence from party meetings.

Tsvangirai, the party`s founding leader died on February 14, 2018. “People always lie that Chamisa grabbed power when Tsvangirai died, no! Nature has a vacuum, we could not allow a vacuum to be there because there was supposed to be a leader who was going to act during Tsvangirai’s funeral,” he claimed.

Chamisa said the MDC leadership set to decide what to do at a meeting where Dr Khupe was invited to attend but did not come. “She didn’t come because she actually had not been coming six months prior, as they had a big issue with Tsvangirai,” he alleged.

Asked to clarify what those issues Tsvangirai and Dr Khupe had, Chamisa said, “Ah it was a lot of issues. Khupe was not happy with the alliance (with other political parties ahead of the 2018 elections) so we tried, and it’s common cause, to adjudicate between Khupe and Tsvangirai. We said ‘Please Khupe come.’ Khupe said ‘I will never come to Tsvangirai’s house, we need a neutral venue, Tsvangirai said mhhh, it’s ok.”

Chamisa claimed he initially refused to be at the helm of the MDC when Tsvangirai suggested he wanted him to be the acting leader.

“When Tsvangirai said ‘Please Chamisa you must act, I said look, please, I don’t want to die early, let Khupe act. I am still young. I only had to act because there was a vacuum and we couldn’t be an embarrassment in front of international diplomats, showing a party that is disorganised,” he indicated.

The MDC leader said he was chosen after a vote by the party’s national council.

“This was a routine national council meeting, not convened for dealing with purposes of Tsvangirai’s death but just coincided with his death. We wanted to deal with other issues around (Elias) Mudzuri and myself,” he narrated.

Chamisa said he had to clarify his position so that people know he did not grab power.  “Bulawayo you are every lucky today, you found me off my guard, and I am saying these issues openly, which is very important,” he said.

The MDC leader said he had tried to engage with Khupe numerous times, even to the extent of reaching out to Khupe’s religious leader from the Roman Catholic Church.

He highlighted it would be more difficult to reach out to her now, seeing the “proximity” that had been established between Khupe and President Emmerson Mnangagwa
“It is so difficult, especially now I see that ED has stolen my sister. She’s spending more time with ED and I am worried about that, I am genuinely worried. We come a long way with Thokozani but when I see the proximity, that is something worrisome to me.

“The last time I saw them at the farm (Mnangagwa’s farm at Kwekwe), my heart ached. I wish I could invite Thoko, to my rural home, I don’t have a farm but I wish I could do the same,” Chamisa said.

He noted it would be good for his party to work with Khupe “because to add is to strengthen and to subtract is to weaken and there’s no individual who is less important so I will continue to reach out, hopefully, she still believes there is going to be rapprochement and I hope that it works.”

Reached for comment, Khupe’s spokesperson, Khaliphani Pugeni, rubbished these claims and said Chamisa flouted the then MDC-T constitution.

“For starters, MDC-T has a constitution, which is regulated and is not about someone becoming one’s favourite person to take after in a succession and the process Chamisa is speaking is not how it is in the constitution. These matters were exhausted in court, were the Bulawayo and Harare high courts made judgments that Dr Khupe is standing on strong legal footing whereas the other is standing on mobocracy,” Pugeni said.

He refuted Khupe had boycotted going to Tsvangirai’s house, meetings and added she was one who even brought his corpse to Zimbabwe from South Africa.

“If Dr Khupe was in foul of constitutional provisions by not attending meetings, the party could have acted but up to today, the party didn’t act until he usurped power through violence and now has come up with all excuses. The only meetings, she could not attend were those called by Chamisa or Mudzuri as they were unconstitutional but any constitutional meeting called by Tsvangirai, she attended.”

Pugeni said Chamisa reached out once to Khupe where “he made demands to say she was going to do as he says or he will unleash his boys on her. Dr Khupe was then hunted like a wild animal, not only physically but also in a violent social media campaign. She was put into groups she did not want to receive messages. I don’t think anyone at this time can be fooled by Chamisa’s claims.”

Away from her private life, Mbali spoke in 2017 about the struggles of finding work. She was counting her blessings and appreciated having multiple work opportunities in an industry that is often hit by drought where jobs are concerned.

“People don’t know that even though they see us on certain shows, we all still go to auditions. That’s why we are always so happy when we are called for shows. I will never complain about being too busy, because in this industry the dry season is real. So I’m grateful for work and being busy,” she told TshisaLIVE at a hotel launch in Cape Town. She last year was a presenter on entertainment show All Access and hosted the OurPerfect Wedding presenter search.

UK-based Zimbabwean gets 17 years in jail for machete attack

UK-based Zimbabwean gets 17 years in jail for machete attack. Another gang member, a 16-year-old was locked up for 10 years after they stabbed Marcus Quashie with machetes as he sat in the driver’s seat of a car. Joe Garbutt, 19, was locked up for five years after ramming the youth with another car.

Tafadzwa Katsande, a Zimbabwean man based in the United Kingdom (UK), has been sentenced to 17 years imprisonment after he and his gang used machetes to attack a driver.

According to an online website, Leeds Crown Court heard the 23-year-old victim only survived due to quick medical intervention and his injuries, including a fractured spine, have changed his life.

Sentencing, Judge Simon Phillips QC told Katsande and the youth: “You both set about a frenzied and sustained attack on Marcus Quashie who was unable to escape or resist.

“It was a scene of brutal carnage.” Prosecutor John Elvidge QC said a number of phone calls were made between a member of Katsande’s gang and Garbutt on April 28 last year. Minutes later, Katsande and three others went to meet Garbutt at the junction of Smith’s Avenue and Carr Street in Marsh while armed with machetes.

Garbutt drove a Seat Ibiza at around 20mph towards the 16-year-old as he stood on Smith’s Avenue. The car mounted the pavement and hit him, causing head injuries, before driving further along the street.

Jurors were shown CCTV footage of Katsande, who the court heard ‘saw red’, going over to Garbutt’s associate Quashie who was sitting in a Citroën on the street.

The court heard Katsande launched a ‘ferocious’ attack on Quashie, thrusting his machete at least 10 times through the driver’s window which had been smashed. The 16-year-old got up and tried to stab Quashie through the passenger’s window, but he could not reach.

He took Katsande’s place at the driver’s window and thrust his machete through the window around 20 times. Elvidge said Katsande jumped up and down in excitement as the teenager successfully stabbed the victim.

Quashie’s attackers fled the scene with their weapons and he drove several feet up the street to his home before collapsing.

Garbutt returned to the scene and told Quashie’s family that he had been injured before lifting an item from the middle of the road and leaving the scene. Katsande also attempted to hide forensic evidence and the teenager discarded his blood-stained clothes close to his mother’s house.

The victim suffered 19 stab wounds, including to his neck, chest, stomach, back, right arm and lung, and fractures to his spine. An artery in his right arm was severed and he lost so much blood that he went into hypovolemic shock.

In a statement read to the court, the victim said: “I honestly thought my time was up and I was going to die.” He spent a week in intensive care and had to undergo multiple surgeries.

He said he now only leaves the house to attend hospital appointments and court and relies heavily on his family. The judge rejected claims that Katsande and others had been shot at from the Citroën earlier that day and that Katsande feared Quashie was armed with a gun.

Garbutt was disqualified from driving for 52 months.

Convictions

A jury unanimously found the men guilty after a trial last month. Katsande , whose family moved to Birchtree Close in Wakefield after the offences, and the 16-year-old, of Huddersfield, were convicted of attempted murder.

Garbutt, previously of Field Lane in Batley, was convicted of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. He has previous convictions, including for criminal damage, causing a person harassment, alarm or distress and battery.

A second 16-year-old, of Milnsbridge, was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and sentenced to six years and eight months in detention after the court heard he thrust a machete at the victim towards the end of the incident.

The court heard a machete was found in a car after the two youths, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, were involved in a police chase in a separate incident.

Katsande pleaded guilty to having an article with a blade or a point in relation to a separate incident in which he was caught wearing surgical gloves and in possession of a dagger and a face mask in Netherton on November 15 last year.

Mitigation

The court heard Katsande, who had no convictions before the stabbing, lived a double life.

Simon Kealey QC, mitigating for Katsande, said his client is intelligent, has qualifications, had an apprenticeship at a law firm where he was a well-regarded volunteer and was involved in music at his local church. He said he recently became a father and has shown empathy for his victim and remorse.
