Leicester City 1 – 0 Birmingham City #FACup

Ricardo Pereira’s late header sent Leicester into the FA Cup quarter-finals at the expense of in-form Championship side Birmingham.

The full-back guided Marc Albrighton’s cross past Lee Camp to settle the tie just when it looked as if extra time was inevitable.

The Foxes – who had not scored in the previous four games – fully deserved their first victory in six matches.

James Maddison had earlier gone close to breaking the deadlock when his 25-yard shot hit the crossbar.

The Foxes will play Chelsea at home in the quarter-finals on the weekend of 21 March.

Birmingham came into the game unbeaten in 13 matches, a run going back to New Year’s Day, as they have climbed from relegation trouble in the Championship to mid-table safety.

But they rarely looked like scoring in front of their impressive 5,129 away fans who made the trip across the midlands.

Leicester named a strong team, with Wilfred Ndidi making his first start in a month following a knee injury.

They dominated with 76.7% of the ball, although Ricardo’s header was one of only two efforts on target.

Brendan Rodgers’ side could have won by more though with Maddison rattling the bar after his shot took a small deflection.

Kelechi Iheanacho had a goal rightly ruled out for offside as he raced on to Maddison’s through ball before rounding Camp to score.

Blues’ best spell came in injury time when Lukas Jutkiewicz fired over the bar and Harlee Dean had a shot saved. But their cup run is over as the Foxes deservedly move into the last eight.

Sheffield Wednesday 0 – 1 Manchester City #FACup

$

Manchester City overcame a spirited Sheffield Wednesday to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals and stay on course for a domestic and European cup treble.

Fresh from their Carabao Cup triumph at Wembley, holders City moved into the last eight of the FA Cup as Sergio Aguero’s 23rd goal of the season saw off their Championship opponents at Hillsborough.

Up until the Argentine found the net with a strong left-foot finish, City had been frustrated by a stubborn Wednesday defensive performance.

Nicolas Otamendi and Benjamin Mendy both hit the bar when the tie was goalless yet City, who dominated possession, had to wait 48 minutes before they managed a shot on target.

Wednesday have endured a wretched run of form and although City keeper Claudio Bravo did not have a save to make, they at least ensured they were not embarrassed.

Aguero, who scored in the 2-1 Carabao Cup final win over Aston Villa on Sunday, has now scored 20 FA Cup goals in 22 ties since joining City in 2011.

Hot on the heels of their domestic cup triumph at Wembley, City arrived in Sheffield looking to progress in another competition.

Liverpool may be galloping away with the Premier League but Pep Guardiola’s men still have more trophies in their sight after the Carabao Cup secured the Spaniard his sixth piece of major silverware since arriving in 2016.

Guardiola’s thirst for trophies was reflected in the strong team he fielded. Although there was no Kevin de Bruyne, who Guardiola revealed after the game was not fit, City still put out a side that boasted a combined 144 Premier League starts this season.

Although Gabriel Jesus started on the left of a front three, City ended the first half without managing an attempt on target – the first time Guardiola’s side have not forced a save in 45 minutes since they played Wednesday’s rivals Sheffield United in December.

It was not until the 33rd minute that they seriously threatened, Otamendi crashing a header against the bar after connecting with Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick following a foul on Bernardo Silva.

For a side that arrived for this tie having scored 109 goals in all competitions, City was strangely subdued in front of goal as John Stones headed a glorious chance over before Aguero forced Joe Wildman into his first save in the 48th minute.

City dominated the second half and once Aguero scored – soon after Mendy had rattled the bar with a ferocious attempt – there only looked to be one outcome.

Wednesday fans gave their team a standing ovation after the final whistle – something Hillsborough has not witnessed for some time.

While Sheffield United are flying in the Premier League and chasing a place in Europe, Wednesday’s season has fallen flat.

Third in the table in December, the Owls are treading water in mid-table after a dreadful run of form in 2020.

This was a chance for Garry Monk’s side to forget about their league troubles – a free hit against Premier League royalty – and for long spells, they acquitted themselves well as City were limited to a handful of chances in a largely uneventful first half.

They started strongly with Jacob Murphy showing confidence to get the game’s first shot away but Wednesday spent long periods penned inside their own half.

In the end, it was a valiant performance by the hosts and a good reaction after their poor run. Monk will hope they can now start to pick up in the league.

Blended Petrol has gone up to ZWL$18.70 per litre. This is ZWL$0.30 (30 cents) up from the previous ZWL$18.40 per litre.

The new prices of fuel translate to US$1.03 ( per litre of diesel and US$1.04 using the government’s official interbank forex rate.

However, using the ubiquitous black market rates which are more widely used by the generality of the population, this translates to US$0.58 (58 cents) per litre of diesel and US$0.58 (58 cents) per litre of blended petrol.

USA extends Zimbabwe sanctions citing Army killings, rapes and economic mismanagement

The USA extends Zimbabwe sanctions citing Army killings, rapes and economic mismanagement. President Donald Trump’s administration also said that the Zanu PF government has ‘ accelerated its persecution of critics and economic mismanagement in the past year, during which security forces have conducted extrajudicial killings, rapes, and alleged abductions of numerous dissidents.”

The United States of America has extended its sanctions against Zimbabwe citing abuses by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government. The White House said that Mnangagwa’s government has failed to show any political will to implement reforms since the 2018 elections as well as the death of former President Robert Mugabe.

The White House released a statement on Wednesday notifying of the extension of the targeted sanctions. iHarare publishes the statement from United States President Donald Trump, in full below,

TO THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES:

Section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)) provides for the automatic termination of a national emergency unless, within 90 days before the anniversary date of its declaration, the President publishes in the Federal Register and transmits to the Congress a notice stating that the emergency is to continue in effect beyond the anniversary date.

In accordance with this provision, I have sent to the Federal Register for publication the enclosed notice stating that the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288 of March 6, 2003, with respect to the actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions is to continue in effect beyond March 6, 2020.

In the wake of the resignation of former President Robert Mugabe in November 2017, Zimbabwe’s national elections in July 2018, and President Mugabe’s subsequent death in September 2019, Zimbabwe has had ample opportunity to implement reforms that could set the country on a constructive path, stabilize the southern African region, and open the door to greater cooperation with the United States.

Unfortunately, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration has yet to signal credible political will to implement such reforms. Indeed, the Zimbabwean government has arguably accelerated its persecution of critics and economic mismanagement in the past year, during which security forces have conducted extrajudicial killings, rapes, and alleged abductions of numerous dissidents.

These actions and policies by certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States. Therefore, I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288 with respect to Zimbabwe.

DONALD J. TRUMP

THE WHITE HOUSE,
March 4, 2020.

Zimbabwe’s State Security Minister, Owen Ncube, and the Commander of the August 1, 2018 massacre, retired Lieutenant General Anselem Sanyatwe were added to the sanctions list over their involvement in the “gross violations of human rights” according to the United States State Department

According to the Voice of America (VOA), the U.S. targeted sanctions apply to only 87 Zimbabwean individuals and 56 entities (mostly farms and legal entities owned by the 87 individuals) as of February 2020.

VOA further notes that the

The Zimbabwe sanctions programme implemented by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (“OFAC”) began on March 7, 2003, when then-President George Bush issued an executive order imposing restrictive measures against “specifically identified individuals and entities in Zimbabwe, as a result of the actions and policies of certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons undermining democratic institutions or processes in Zimbabwe.” The sanctions programme has since been continued by President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump.

China Railway awarded a $825 million deal project for Zambia line upgrades

Zambia Awards China Railway $825 million deal project for line upgrades. Zambia signed an $825 million contract with a China Railway Construction Corp. unit to upgrade tracks in the south of the country, the company said.

The project will last eight years and will cover nearly 650 kilometers (404 miles) of lines, China Railway said a statement, without saying how it will be financed. If the government is planning on funding the rehabilitation project through borrowing, it could raise questions about the credibility of measures Zambia announced last month to cut foreign debt.

Zambia’s economy is straining under soaring liabilities, and S&P Global Ratings last month cut the nation’s credit rating to CCC, eight levels below investment grade. That’s the lowest level for any African country it assesses. Finance Minister Bwalya Ng’andu said last month the cabinet agreed to a moratorium on contracting external project loans.

The government also planned to cancel or re-scope contracts to reduce its pipeline foreign debt by about $5 billion, he said. Zambia’s finance and transport ministries didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Many think she’s got it all together, but social media influencer Mihlali Ndamase has opened up about suffering from emotional episodes and needing her mother by her side during a testing time. On Twitter, Mihlali said she has been going through episodes that have left her feeling sad.

“Woke up feeling really sad, been going through these episodes often lately. Idk why, but at least my mom’s flying up to spend the rest of the week with me. I know she’ll lift my spirit. Mihlali has opened up before on the effects fame can have on mental health, saying trending on social media can be a blessing and a curse.

In a podcast on TshisaLIVE, Mihlali said: “It’s great, but it’s also nerve-racking. Now I feel like I need to walk on eggshells at times because I don’t necessarily [have control of the trends].

“It could be a good moment or a bad one, people can turn something good into something negative as well, which is something that I have no control over. Usually, if that happens, I just let it die down. However, the influencer won’t be forced into being someone she is not.

“No, I’m not trying to be anybody else but myself. So I put myself on the platter and I put myself out there and you take it or you leave it. If you don’t like it, don’t eat from this platter, eat from another one. I’m a very raw person and I’m very honest and transparent.

ZCTU mobilises for a national shutdown

ZCTU mobilises for a national shutdown. ZCTU president Peter Mutasa disclosed this at the fifth labour forum meeting held in Gweru on Monday. Mutasa, accompanied by his secretary-general Japhet Moyo and members of the ZCTU’s general council, has been on a whirlwind tour of the country’s provinces, meeting their membership to mobilise for the national shutdown.

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is moving across the country mobilising for a national shutdown to pressure President Emmerson Mnangagwa to address the deteriorating economic situation in the country.

They have visited Gweru, Masvingo, Mutare, Bulawayo and Chinhoyi and hope to reach out to the remaining five provinces in the charm offensive. In his address to restive workers at Mkoba Hall in Gweru, Mutasa said he was prepared to die or be severely persecuted by State security agents who will try to put down the protests.

He highlighted that workers in the country had been reduced to paupers by Mnangagwa’s government to an extent that they no longer had esteem and dignity in society.

“People who started with the issue of shutdowns had understood that when you fail to get food in the house, there is someone who has caused that. If you fail to get an adequate salary, there is someone taking part of it, if you fail to have enough money for rentals and school fees, there is someone who will have taken it,” he said.

“We must ask ourselves to say what are we going to do when we sleep without eating and our kids go to school without shoes? Should we continue to be passive just hoping things will wake up normal just like that?

“Now the government wants to have 2,5% stolen from salaries of workers on top of 2% mobile transactions tax, 14% VAT [value-added tax], 35% payee, on top of rates at councils and tollgate fees. The likes of (the late MDC leader) Morgan Tsvangirai rejected such scenarios and shut down the country.”

MDC national secretary for labour, Gideon Shoko said the ZCTU was right to organise a national shutdown.

“The ZCTU is very right to follow that route. As the MDC, we certainly sympathise with the stance that the ZCTU wants to take … We, as a party, believe the populace, in general, understands why the ZCTU has resorted to wanting to protest,” he said.

ZCTU’s organised anti-fuel price hike protests in January last year, however, degenerated into violence and death after the government responded by deploying the military in a crackdown that resulted in the death of 17 people, injuring hundreds while thousands were arrested.

Since then, the government has used brute force to thwart protests.

Kgomotso Christopher talks about her Scandal exit

$
0
0

Kgomotso Christopher makes her exit from e.tv’s flagship soap, “Scandal! While departures are par for the course on a TV show, they are not easily welcomed by viewers. More so, when it is a character they have come to love. Christopher joined the soap four years ago when she was cast Yvonne Thebe, Naledi’s (played by Dineo Moeketsi) estranged mum. Last year, Christopher also scooped the Best Actress in a TV Soap at the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas). This was her first win and third nomination. Prior to joining “Scandal!”, she played Katlego Sibeko in “Isidingo”.

On shifting from one memorable character to another, Christopher said: “Our task as professional and trained actors is to always strive for diversity and character differentiation as we portray various characters. I, therefore, had no doubt that I would shake off the character, in fact, that was my mission and task when I took on the role of Yvonne…to showcase a different side of my craft and range. However, the challenge is always convincing the viewer.

“The character I left behind on ‘Isidingo’ was also well-loved. In fact, most people believed it would be impossible for me to create another well-loved character and were very surprised that I had the courage to walk away from Katlego Sibeko. Four years down the line, I have no doubt that viewers are happy that I took a leap of faith and joined Scandal! Without the courage to move on, I and the audiences would have been robbed of going on a journey with Yvonne /Yv/ Maleeto.

Award-winning actress Kgomotso Christopher in e.tv’s “Scandal”. Picture: Courtesy of e.tv
On fans now referring to her as Yv, she said: “I thought it was hilarious. For years, I was Katlego or Mrs Sibeko, at some point fans wanted to let me know that they could refer to me as both…Yv has completely deleted Katlego from the street lingo. Yv indeed became a whole entire and new character that fans fell in love with. It affirms my work as an actor in so many ways.”

As for her top three story-lines, Christopher revealed: “There were so many amazing and storylines that always challenged me as an actor. I loved the rivalry storyline with Boniswa as “sister-wives”. The fake gambling room story where Yv stole Neo’s clients and someone was murdered for to teach Yv a lesson. And, of course, the current storyline of discovering Mme Maleeto by delving into her past and eventually connecting with Tibi.

Kgomotso Christopher

Fans will still get to see her on-screen for the next two months. e.tv head of Local Productions Ziyanda Mngomezulu said: “YV arrived as a representation of the South African girl next door who had to make means to maintain her glamorous lifestyle. The actress needed to do little to portray the characteristics of the character. Yv’s journey allowed viewers to see themselves get into complex life situations vicariously, and in sometimes quirky ways, her role allowed them to breathe a sigh of relief for having dodged yet another bullet that may expose the less than perfect image they work so hard to maintain.

“Kgomotso managed to portray a multi-layered and complex reality to viewers, whom many identify with. When asked about any plans to lessen the blow for fans by adding one or more characters, she responded: “The show is continuously searching for opportunities to showcase new talent and will introduce different characters in due course.”

While fans are reeling from the news of Christopher’s departure, her open-ended exit from the soap could see the actress return at some point. The actress added: “I love ‘Scandal!’ and I know I will always have a home there. It means anything is possible. For now, however, the show has been very supportive and understanding of my decision and my need to step away in 2020.

President Mnangagwa has banned civil servants to do foreign trips

Foreign trips ban for civil servants. Addressing the 337th Ordinary Session of the Zanu-PF Politburo in Harare yesterday, the President said the Ministry of Health and Child Care, together with associated departments, was adequately prepared to handle any possible cases of Covid-19, but the Government wanted to minimise the risk of such cases in the first place, hence the travel ban for civil servants.

President Mnangagwa has banned civil servants from foreign trips and urged other Zimbabweans to restrict their travelling, especially outside Africa, as part of measures to minimise the risk of being exposed to Covid-19. “We will continue to urge our people to minimise the risk of exposure. For those in Government, I have banned foreign travelling. I also appeal to Zimbabweans to minimise travelling outside the country,” he said.

President Mnangagwa’s sentiments come at a time when Zimbabwe has announced that people visiting the country from areas affected by Covid-19 without valid medical certificates showing they are not infected, will be sent back at the port of entry.

But Zimbabweans cannot be refused entry to their own country. Those returning residents who have visited the epicentre of the pandemic are automatically quarantined and tested.

Over 3 000 people around the world have died from Covid-19 following the first outbreak recorded in the Chinese City of Wuhan in Hubei Province from the more than 93 000 cases recorded.

The overwhelming majority of cases and deaths have been in China, but deaths have been reported in Iran, Italy and the United States, and authorities are considering new quarantine zones and travel restrictions.

Africa has recorded just three confirmed cases, one each in Algeria, Egypt and Nigeria, but authorities across the continent are taking precautions with assistance from the World Health Organisation.

In Zimbabwe, over 6 000 people have been screened for infection at ports of entry, mainly Robert Gabriel Mugabe International and Victoria Falls International airports and the Beitbridge Border Post.

Both persons, who arrived after visiting Wuhan, were immediately quarantined and tested, with both being released after the tests came out negative although both are among the group being continuously monitored for 21 days. The two were detained at Wilkins Hospital where they were observed and discharged.

All Government emergency agencies, including the Department of Civil Protection, have been directed to be prepared for any Covid-19 outbreak. Yesterday, Ecobank donated US$$30 000 to Ministry of Health and Childcare for the procurement of coronavirus testing kits as part of the national preparedness efforts.

The kits will be used at all ports of entry including airports and border posts where screening of the potentially infected is taking place to prevent the disease from spreading into the country.

In a statement, Ecobank director Mr Moses Kurenjekwa said the bank was alive to the potential business and human threat posed by Covid-19 globally.

“It is our hope that we can come together as a nation and deal collectively with this serious threat to social and economic progress. The continued increase in the number of cases and the number of affected countries over the last few days are clearly of concern to all,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe assured parents with children studying in that country of their safety.

Over 2 000 Zimbabwean students are studying in China. But China has won praise from international health agencies for the effective measures it is taking. The problem with a new disease with an incubation period of up to 21 days is that a lot of people can be infected before the outbreak is recognised.

Man United open Jack Grealish talks again

Man United open Jack Grealish talks again. Grealish is set to be hot property at the end of the season after an impressive step up to the Premier League featuring nine goals and eight assists has seen him tipped with a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020.

Manchester United have opened talks with Aston Villa about signing midfielder Jack Grealish this summer, according to reports. Indeed, United have already been heavily linked with a move for the 24-year-old, with reports suggesting the Red Devils are prepared to triple his wages to bring him to Old Trafford.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United got in touch with Villa in February about Grealish, as part of their plan each season to “execute” deals in that month.

Grealish has also been tipped to sign for a “big club” by Villa teammate Frederic Guilbert. “He’s a top player,” Guilbert told France Football. “I think he has the ability to go to a big club this summer.

[After] The [European Championships], clearly, [he] will go.” Villa boss Dean Smith, meanwhile, has always been insistent that Grealish’s heart remains with the West Midlands club after rising through the ranks at his boyhood club.

However, he recently admitted that keeping the player at the club in the summer will be a tough ask. “Obviously, staying in this league is one of the biggest things to help us keep Jack Grealish,” Smith said.

“He wants to play at the highest level and he wants to win trophies.”  Grealish’s future will likely depend on whether Villa are playing in the Premier League next season. Smith’s side sit 19th, two points adrift of safety.

MDC-A defends Grace Mugabe over multiple farms

MDC-A defends Grace Mugabe over multiple farms. The incident occurred in the National Assembly during the weekly question-and-answer session. MDC-Alliance legislators yesterday defended former First Lady Grace Mugabe’s ownership of multiple farms and quashed calls by Norton legislator Mr Temba Mliswa to repossess them.

Mr Mliswa said it was on record that the former First Lady had multiple farms and asked Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, as leader of Government business in Parliament, when Government would start repossessing some of them.

President Mnangagwa is on record as saying the former First Family owned more than 10 farms. “Government embarked on a land audit to see who was utilising land and who was not and for what reason and the multiple farm owners,” said Mr Mliswa.

“It is on record that the former First Lady owns more than four farms and the Government has done absolutely nothing when the policy is one-man one-farm, one-woman one-farm. The question is; what have they done with the land audit and why have they not repossessed land from the former First Lady.”

MDC-Alliance legislators interjected, with St Mary’s legislator Mr Job Sikhala shouting: “Mugabe akafa kare siyanai naye (referring to Mrs Mugabe) and “why do you want to abuse the widow.”

MDC-Alliance legislators briefly brought business to a halt, while Mr Mliswa accused them of supporting Mrs Mugabe because she funded their campaigns in 2018 harmonised elections.

“Makapihwa mari naGrace muchi campaigner (you were funded by Grace during the elections campaign),” Mr Mliswa said. Mrs Mugabe was the face of the G40 faction that was expelled from Zanu PF during Operation Restore Legacy in 2017.

The group has found a home in MDC-Alliance, with former Zanu PF Politburo members — Professor Jonathan Moyo and Patrick Zhuwao — openly throwing their weight behind the opposition party’s president Mr Nelson Chamisa and admitting that they fundraised for MDC Alliance campaign.

Other former G4O members, including Shadreck Mashayamombe and Kudakwashe Bhasikiti have been coopted into the structures of the opposition party. Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda eventually restored order in the House.

Minister Ziyambi said the Government remained committed and would not change its stance on the one-man, one-farm policy. “Government indeed embarked on a land audit and our President is very clear on the policy of one-man one-farm and one woman one farm,” Minister Ziyambi said.

Zacc investigates fuel retail companies

Zacc investigates fuel retail companies. Sources said the oil firms withheld fuel received between February 24 and March 1 because they wanted higher mark-ups in the formulas used by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) to set the retail prices.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) will investigate reports of fuel hoarding by oil companies that allegedly received, in the past week, 20 million litres of diesel and almost 9 million litres of petrol, but reportedly withheld much of the fuel in the hope of forcing authorities to increase their permitted mark-ups.

Speculation that the companies hoped for licences for forex service stations is less likely since such stations have to procure fuel outside the general allocation system using their own free funds with steps being taken to ensure ordinary allocations were not sold in forex service stations.

The withholding of supplies worsened shortages. Documents seen last night showed that for diesel, Redan got almost 2,4 million litres, Billheights (Trek) 857 503 litres, Engen 1,8 million litres, Zuva 272 498 litres, Total 2,2 million litres, Petrotrade 1,1 million litres, and Pickglow (Glow) 886 646 litres.

For petrol, Redan got 1,6 million litres, Trek 34 526 litres; Engen 29 038 litres, Zuva 531 288 litres, Total 2,5 million litres, Petrotrade 546 291 litres and Glow 605 001 litres. Much of this fuel was reportedly not sold. The National Oil Infrastructure Company (NOIC), which distributes fuel in the general system to oil companies, confirmed allocating fuel to the oil companies.

NOIC board chairman Engineer Daniel Mackenzie Ncube said: “Yes, they were getting fuel. I can confirm that they were withholding fuel and they were claiming that the price from Zera (the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority) was sub-economic for them.

“They were just giving a number of reasons. But going forward, we will be putting in place a tracking system that shows us where a truck leaving NOIC delivers the fuel.” Asked what evidence they had to demonstrate that oil companies withheld the fuel, Eng Mackenzie Ncube said the endless queues and complaints from consumers were enough evidence.

Zacc chairperson Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo confirmed receiving reports of hoarding by oil companies and said: “Zacc is launching investigations into the matter.”

Asked when the investigations will start, Justice Matanda-Moyo said no date had been allocated since she got the case last night. Head of the Special Anti-Corruption Unit Mr Thabani Mpofu said they also got information pertaining to the possible hoarding in the fuel sector.

“The allegations of fuel hoarding and the illicit trading of fuel have been brought to our attention,” he said. “We have referred these to the State institutions that are charged with corruption investigations. You may want to get a comment from those.”

It is understood that yesterday there was a meeting between the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Zera and the oil marketers to try and find a solution to the challenges. Last night, Zera announced that fuel prices are going up from today, with diesel retailing at a maximum of $18,66 and petrol $18,70.

Zera’s maximum retail prices are based on the actual landed price of the fuel in US dollars, the interbank exchange rate at the time of the import, and the handling charges, taxes and mark-ups based on the landed Zimbabwe dollar price.

Grace Mugabe and son in hot soup after $2 million lawsuit filed against them by Lebanese businessman

Grace Mugabe and son in hot soup after $2 million lawsuit filed against them by Lebanese businessman. The Lebanese businessman, Jamal Hamed, approached the High Court demanding a total of US$4 million from Grace and her son, Russell Goreraza, as defamation compensation and damages to his three houses he alleges were seized by Grace.

Former First Lady Grace Mugabe has asked the High Court to dismiss a US$2 million defamation lawsuit filed against her by a Lebanese businessman whose houses she grabbed over a diamond ring dispute.

Prior to the defamation battle, Jamal had earlier on been embroiled in another legal saga with Grace over a diamond ring when her husband, the late former President Robert Mugabe was still ruling.

In his current lawsuit, Jamal said he was a renowned diamond entrepreneur who, among other businesses, trades in diamonds both within and outside Zimbabwe and that between October 2016 and December 2017, Grace and Goreraza caused a statement to be published in connection with the diamond ring saga, claiming that he had breached the terms and conditions of the deal.

Consequently, he said the published statements depicted him as a criminal, tarnishing his image both locally and internationally for which he is demanding US$2 million. The businessman cited Grace, Goreraza, police officers Kennedy Fero and Nyambo Viera and Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga in his official capacity as respondents.

However, in their plea filed on February 25, 2020, Grace and her son urged the court to dismiss the claims. “The court proceedings referred to were filed by the first plaintiff (Jamal Hamed) and in terms of the law,” they said.

“The first and second defendants (Grace and Goreraza) were obliged to respond thereto. Their responses in the court proceedings were lawful and privileged. Further, it is correct that the plaintiff breached the contract and pursuant to the breach, offered to compensate the first defendant (Grace), which to date he has not done so.”

Added Grace: “The date of the alleged publication and where the said publication took place is not stated. If the said publication took place prior to 2017, this claim has prescribed. The statements attributed to the first and second defendants, if made in court proceedings, were made lawfully and in their context were not defamatory or unlawful.

“It is denied that a reasonable reader would interpret court proceedings as ascribed by the plaintiff to the extent that any statement referred to the breach of contract and failure to remedy that breach, the statements are accurate.” The matter is pending.
