COVID-19 Lockdown threatens ARV treatment

COVID-19 Lockdown threatens ARV treatment. Born HIV positive and only discovering that at the age of 13 when he seriously fell ill, Tinopona Muvundi (not real), 25, could not think of anything else but escaping Mother Earth to a world that has never been seen by the living.

His life is punctuated with setbacks beyond his imagination and control. Fortunately, a series of counselling services were refreshing enough to reboot his thinking.

A positive mindset was installed and since then, Tinopona has been “building his own paradise”, he says, as he grapples with life challenges. Unfortunately, life has not been kind enough. He lost his father in 2014 and later on his mother succumbed to HIV.

As he battles with the HIV virus and fending for his family as he is the eldest of the two siblings, Tinopona is today faced with yet another challenge-the Corona Virus widely referred to as COVID -19.

The virus which originated in China’s Wuhan province has not been kind to the global community, leading to several countries Zimbabwe included, declaring lockdown.

Tinopona, a very reserved man who has been taught through life challenges to always find a way in the midst of any setback, is worried. “Life has not been kind to me since the day I knew about my HIV status and it got worse when I lost both parents and left to fend for my brother and myself.

“I knew about my status when I seriously fell ill during Form 1 first term after suffering from fever, soar throat, cough and difficulty in breathing. “Tests were done and I was found HIV positive and diagnosed with TB as well.

“That moment all hell broke loose as my parents status was also revealed which they hid for 14 years,” he says. Growing up having told that HIV was a s.e.xually transmitted virus and to him knowing he had not encountered any s.e.xual activity with anyone, Tinopona thought of taking his life.

“At first, it was hard for me to accept my status to an extent that at one point I thought of committing suicide but through counselling, my mindset changed. “However, the Heavens took my father in 2014 after a short illness and my mother followed after she defaulted in taking her medication,” says Nathan.

After the twist in events, Tinopona and his brother Otten had to move from Glen Norah (one of the high-density suburbs in Harare Zimbabwe) to Epworth which is regarded as the poorest suburb in the capital city.

The economic hardships has left the two boys in agony as they had little means of survival since Tinopona is barber while his younger brother is a vendor in town. And Tinopona has not been spared during this period of Covid-19 which has infected more than two million and more than 200 000 are dead.

Tinopona, who is used to collect his antiretroviral drug Delutograv at a local clinic in Glen Norah, risk defaulting on his medication as it has become very difficult for him to go collect during the lockdown. Tinopona narrates his efforts to get clearance to go past roadblocks which were hitting dead-ends.

“My usual health facility for the drug is a clinic in Glen Norah. “However, during this lockdown I had to pass through a police roadblock to access my medication and efforts to get clearance to go past roadblocks are hitting dead-ends as the police are not considering hospital books.

“Two weeks ago, I was supposed to go and collect a refill since my four-weeks package was almost empty left with one tablet I had to take the following morning. “When I tried to pass through a roadblock, the police denied me access to proceed with the journey so had to board another ZUPCO bus to return home. “The following day, I thought of trying my luck by going back there so that I access my medication but it was to no avail.

“This left me stressed because of the risk I am putting myself by defaulting on ARVs,” he says. Tinopona’s case is not in isolation as there are many people living with HIV who have faced the same predicament.

Director TB and HIV/AIDS in the Ministry of Health and Child Care Dr Owen Mugurungi said they have heard cases similar to Tinopona’s that is why the ministry has suggested many months’ supply of ARVs. “During this period we would want our clients who are people living with HIV to get many months’ supply of drugs because usually, it was per month.

“So we have decided to give them three-four months’ supply to decongest health facilities during this period of Covid-19. “We are also aware of clients who used to collect their medication far from their area of residence yet at their nearest clinics ARVs were available.

“Therefore, we encourage them to get from their nearest clinics because as a ministry, we have the decentralised treatment and care at every clinic countrywide,” he says.

Dr Mugurungi urges security forces to allow HIV clients to access their medication. “In the case of police denying access to HIV patients, we encourage them not to do that because people have genuine reasons which need urgent attention from the health care workers.

“And when they end up defaulting on treatment, they face a lot of consequences whereby they develop resistance on medication and they will end up in need of second and third-line drugs which are very expensive.

“Also if they default on medication, they might lose their lives,” he says. National AIDS Council chief executive officer Dr Bernard Madzima says they were happy that the Ministry of Health and Child Care allowed all health facilities to remain open during this lockdown.

“During this period of lockdown, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has assured that all health facilities will remain open for collection of medicines because it is important that people living with HIV do not know default on medication.

“In recent years we have lost many people due to defaulting hence we do not need the same to happen during this period,” he says. Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike expresses concern by the total disregard by those enforcing the lockdown of people’s right to essential health services.

“People on ARVs must be allowed to access the services they need as their lives depend on accessing such medications.

“I fear that the strict measures adopted during lockdown by security forces could lead to a lot of people defaulting on medications as they are prevented from accessing health institutions or get clearance past police checkpoints,” he says.

Zimbabwe Republic Police Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi says they were doing their best in ensuring that people living with HIV are not denied access when they want to collect their medication.

“We are advising members who are in need of health services especially people on ARVs who want to collect their medicines to visit the nearest local police station and see the officer in charger who would document a pass which allows them to proceed when they get at roadblocks.

“We also encouraging patients to walk with their hospital books which indicates that they are going for treatment so that they won’t be any inconveniences caused,” he said.

Econet reopens shops countrywide

Econet reopens shops countrywide. Econet Wireless has begun reopening its shops following the lifting of some COVID-19 (Coronavirus) lockdown restrictions.

But the company cautioned customers to be patient as it ramps up processes in and around its shops to balance quick service turnaround and ensuring public safety. Econet said in a statement:

We would like to advise our customers that we have begun the process of safely reopening our shops to the public. We have put in place public health and safety measures to protect both our staff and customers and are now working to speed up service delivery at all our customer service centres.

It, however, said pent-up demand from over a month in which customers could not physically access its shops meant that some of its service centres were, in the short term, getting overwhelmed by customers in need of urgent service. The statement added:

We earnestly implore our customers to be patient with us – particularly those coming to collect cash remittances from abroad and those in need of SIM card replacements – as we work to clear the backlog that built up during the lockdown.

It said logistical delays in moving hard currency into the country during the lockdown had caused shortages of the physical US dollars at remittance cash-out centres.

We import the US dollars and hard currency we dispense at our cash redemption shops. But due to the world-wide lockdown, which particularly affected air and cross-border travel, we have had some delays in getting imported foreign currency into the country. But we are working flat out to address this so that we clear all outstanding remittance payouts.

So high was the demand for service yesterday that some Econet shops in Harare and Bulawayo had to bring in extra security to maintain order among restless customers seeking to be served.

Reds coach Jugen Klopp: It would be unfair to deny Liverpool the title

Reds coach Jugen Klopp: It would be unfair to deny Liverpool the title. The Reds hold a 25-point lead over closest rivals Manchester City and require two wins to clinch their first league title in 30 years.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp says his side deserve to be crowned EPL champions, even if the rest of the season is cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

With the pandemic making other sectors to call for voiding of the campaign, Klopp has spoken out about how unjust it would have been if his side wasn’t awarded the EPL title, after such a dominant season.

He said at a talk at the DFB Academy: “There was talk that people wanted to declare the season null and void. So you thought: ‘Huh? We have played 76 percent of the season and you just want to delete the thing?’

“That would have been something that I personally would find unfair, to just say that it didn’t happen. “We are first in the home table, we are first in the away table. It is a season in which we should become champions.

“Dealing with a crisis is the most important thing. But that doesn’t mean that certain things are of no importance at all just because they are less important.

“I think there are worse things in life than not becoming champions. A lot of people around us have big problems. People die, it always happens, but at the moment because of a virus that we all didn’t know and for which nobody could be prepared.

“We cannot prepare for everything, but also have to react often. That’s the biggest part of my life, reacting to things that I didn’t expect.” Plans to get the season underway are already in place with clubs starting training in small groups today.

Pic of the day: Rare pic of ED’s son Collins Mnangagwa with his kids. The sons of the President of Zimbabwe has of late been making headlines and mostly for the wrong reasons. Today we had an article of the one Tarirai Mnangagwa we is being accused of threatening a Zesa worker by firing gunshots into the air. But the twins always try to avoid making headlines for wrong reasons they seem to be the only sons of the President who are living up to be perfect sons.

Emmerson Mnangagwa’s sons have vowed that they will strike a different note from the Mugabe family, known for ostentatious profligacy and greed. Collins and Sean Mnangagwa, the 30-year-old twins from the president’s marriage to Auxilia, 54, said they had grown up without the wealth that surrounded the children of the former leader and so were more down to earth.

“I don’t even drink champagne and my watch cost $120,” said Sean, an engineer — a reference to a video posted on social media showing Chatunga Mugabe, 21, pouring Armand de Brignac Gold champagne over a $60,000 watch.

Mrs Mnangagwa said she had not headed for Harare’s top boutiques for her inauguration outfit but had recycled a dress she wore to a wedding earlier in the year. The boys seem to have lived to their words. Below is a rare picture of one of the Twins Collins with his family.

She told Daily Sun people stopped her to ask if she was Lady Zamar.

“They ask for autographs and to take pictures with me. They don’t believe me when I tell them I’m not Lady Zamar and become disappointed. I ignored this for a long time, but wondered who was Lady Zamar and made it a mission to find out.”

Thando said she tried to inbox her on Facebook, but was not successful.

Thando is a psychology graduate from the University of Zululand and now works as a social worker in Joburg. She got a job after looking for three years.

“If I meet Lady Zamar, this year would be my greatest,” she said.

Chatunga Mugabe takes a dig at Jah Prayzah’s new album Hokoyo

Chatunga Mugabe takes a dig at Jah Prayzah’s new album Hokoyo. The celebrated artist will today release his 15-track album titled Hokoyo. Seven videos off the album. I couldn’t hold on to this anymore. Jah Prayzah has finally decided to drop his 10th album in the midst of the Covid-19 inspired national lockdown.

With videos to the title track Hokoyo and Asante Sana having been released already, Jah Prayzah is set to release the rest of the album starting today. Eight audio tracks will be released interspaced from 8am this morning before five videos are dropped starting tomorrow.

The seven videos accompanying the album are not only unprecedented but very different. Fans who love his cultural, urban and dance tracks and videos have been catered for.

Speaking exclusively to H-Metro ahead of the launch, the dreadlocked entertainer said he will start by releasing his collaboration with Zim Praise titled Muteuro. “My song with Zim Praise will be the first to be released at 8am (today). Thereafter we will drop a song every one and a half hours until all the tracks with no videos are released,” he said.

In a move that is set to break the internet as far as Zimbabwean entertainment is concerned, Jah will follow that up by releasing a fresh video every week-day from Thursday to Wednesday next week. “The first video we are dropping is Mukwasha on Thursday, then Kwayedza on Friday, Chiramwiwa on Monday, Donhodzo on Tuesday and Munyaradzi on Wednesday.”

That brings to seven, the number of videos off the 15-track album – an unprecedented move given the high cost of producing quality videos in this era. “This is my tenth album and 10 is such a big number to me. I took my time that is why I did not drop the album last year when people were expecting it. I had to do something special for the fans that have supported me throughout this 10-album journey that is why I invested in seven quality videos. I am excited to release these videos and this album to the world. I couldn’t hold on to this anymore.

The lanky singer said he could not hold on to the album any more after initially planning to release it on April 3. “Music ndeyevanhu. So it doesn’t make sense or serve its purpose if I keep it in a computer when I composed it to be listened to,” he said.

“Relevance is also important. You do not want to release songs that are outdated. For example the song Chimanimani is about the disaster that hit Manicaland, Cyclone Idai, but now we are into another disaster of the Covid-19 pandemic and I still haven’t released it.” He added that holding onto the album was also inhibiting the urge to produce more music.

“Even mari ikawandisa unotadza kutsvaga imwe. With Hokoyo album ready for months, I do not feel inspired to work on new projects. But after releasing this album I will slowly return to the studio with the relaxed conditions and begin work on the next one.

“This is a new era and as artists we are inspired by what goes on around us and Covid-19 has brought about a different environment set to inspire us to different productions.”

Meanwhile Jah Prayzah dismissed social media audios purporting to be of a song with Charles Charamba. He said he will start rehearsals for live performances during the lockdown. “I don’t know when but something is definitely coming since lockdown conditions have been relaxed and the band can now come to work,” he said. He last released an album titled Chitubu in 2018.

To those who have listened to the album already, they are saying the album is dope whilst some are saying its not that god. We all know when these guys release albums they are subjected to heavy criticism and it seems for Jah Prayzah it has started already. Chatunga Mugabe is already his first critic. Experiences of a returning resident in Zimbabwe. National Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (NANGO) has reported that the situation of returning residents and other travellers who are in mandatory quarantine has been a topical issue in Zimbabwe amid the escalation of fake news in the country.

Abducted MDC activists had gone for a romantic night with lovers in Bindura. Deputy Government Spokesperson Energy Mutodi says the three MDC officials who were allegedly abducted last Wednesday had gone for a night out with their lovers in Bindura the night of the alleged abduction.

Posting on Twitter Mutodi said, “Details emerge MDC youths Joana Mamombe, Netsai Marova, and Cecilia Chimbiri went out for a romantic night to Bindura with their lovers who are artisanal miners. They parked their car at a police station for safety but tragedy struck when they demanded foreign currency for services.”

British publication The Times reported on Monday that Henry Chimbiri, the 56-year-old father to Cecilia, has slept in his car outside the hospital since his daughter was brought in. “Things are now far more dangerous,” he told The Times, adding: “Mugabe was a front for the devilish underground movement of his party, led by Mnangagwa, that was responsible for its worst excesses. Now it is those very people who are in power.”

On Monday Minister of Home Affairs, Kazembe Kazembe instructed Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga to investigate circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the three after a demonstration in Warren Park.

Legal affairs Minister Kazembe: By-elections will not be banned

Legal affairs Minister Kazembe: By-elections will not be banned. This follows reports that the ZANU PF-led government has made a pact with the smaller MDC faction to form a unity government after a Supreme Court ruling handed over the reins of the opposition party to Thokozani Khupe.

Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi on Tuesday said that the government does not have plans to postpone the holding of by-elections indefinitely.

Ziyambi said by-elections are a constitutional requirement and the government has to ensure that they are held when they are due. He said: By-elections are a constitutional requirement and if a seat is vacant, we have to hold them because someone can make a court application to challenge that we did not hold them as stipulated by the Constitution and so we have to find the money to hold the by-elections.

Ziyambi dismissed reports that the government intends to amend the Constitution to do away with by-elections. Said Ziyambi:

It is not true that Zanu PF is planning to amend the Constitution to ban by-elections because the Constitutional Amendment (No 2) Bill is before Parliament and there is no clause to ban by-elections.

The Constitution is a sacred document and it cannot be amended willy-nilly, but rumour mongers always create fake news. Earlier this month, the MDC-T recalled MDC Alliance MPs and the National Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda declared the three seats vacant.

ZIMSEC sets date for June exams. This was said by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Tumisang Tabela during a hearing before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Education chaired by Honourable Priscilla Misihairabwi Mushonga (Proportional Representation) in Harare this Wednesday.

The Zimbabwe Schools Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) June 2020 exams will start on 22 June and end on 22 July.

She said the Education Ministry noted that there are a number of issues which will be considered before schools can re-open. The issues have to do with the guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Child Care which are meant to curb the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus.

Thabela said schools need to be disinfected while more furniture is required for social distancing with each school expected to have an infrared thermometer for testing purposes. An announcement will be made on how the June examinations will proceed, Thabela added.
