Sphamandla “Themba” Dhludhlu of Rhythm City, football star Thamsanqa Gabuza arrested

SuperSport United striker, Thamsanqa Gabuza, who has been charged with reckless and negligent driving, could have a further charge of violating lockdown rules added to his charge sheet.

This after the police charged all four passengers, who included Rhythm City actor Sphamandla “Themba” Dhludhlu, in his car with violation of Disaster Management Act but failed to charge the soccer star for the same offence. Instead, he was only charged with reckless and negligent driving.

According to a police statement in possession of Sunday World, the police officer who was doing a stop and search near Sandton spotted a white Audi driving at a speed of 213kh in a 120kh zone.

“The officer saw a white Audi A4 driving at a high speed. He switched on the siren and he stopped the car. He asked the driver why he was driving at high speed on the freeway and with four passenger (sic) in the car and without permits and he arrested the driver Mr T Gabuza at Sandton SAPS and four passengers,” reads the statement.

The same police officer arrested Dhludhlu and the other three passengers and charged them for breaking the lockdown regulations.

“While he was at Rivonia and N1 Freeway he realized (sic) white Audi A4 with registration (withheld) travelling at a high speed. He light on blue light and siren (sic). They explained (sic) to the driver why he was driving at a high speed and is arrested. He asked the passengers work permits or travel permits,” reads the statement.

Gabuza and Dhludhlu and the other three unidentified passengers were released on R1500 police bail each and are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on July 15 this year.

Gauteng Police Provincial Spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed that another charge might be added to the footie’s charge sheet.

“The police are investigating this matter and depending on the outcome of the investigations, more charges might be added to the charge sheet of the suspect,” he said.

Meanwhile, a video clip of Gabuza and Orlando Pirates defender Ntsikelelo Nyauza and a slay queen who was holding a stash of banknotes, is being circulated on social media.

In the vid, the two soccer stars are seen converging next to bottles of booze while listening to amapiano beats. However, it is not clear if the video was filmed hours before the arrest.

Nyauza has since denied the allegation that he was in the company of Gabuza when he was arrested by the police.

NPA South Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said she was unable to comment as the docket had not yet been brought to them.

George Floyd’s gruesome murder in America draws world attention

George Floyd’s gruesome murder in America draws world attention. The demonstrations, which subsequently turned violent, were sparked by the death of a black man, George Floyd, in custody. Scenes of gratuitous and unrelenting violence, looting and arson, including the arrest of a journalist covering the riots live on television in the United States of America, shocked the world last week, as the actions were contrary to the values that are routinely preached by Washington around the world.

The disturbing murder was captured by concerned bystanders. It is believed that Trump’s administration’s threat to deploy the army and shoot rioters, who were labelled by the US president as “thugs”, further stoked emotions and inflamed the situation.

Violence is reportedly flaring up in 30 major US cities. Political scientists and commentators say the unprecedented developments in the US, which is already in the throes of the deadly coronavirus pandemic that had claimed 104 000 American lives by yesterday, are the manifestation of deep-seated grievances that have been endured by minority communities, especially blacks, for a long time.

“The public murder of George Floyd and the outrage and mayhem it has triggered is a clear indication that the ‘log’ of human rights abuse is in the eye of Washington,” said the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) chairperson, Ambassador Chris Mustvangwa yesterday. “This is even as it blows the trumpet about the ‘straw’ in the eye of Harare . . .

“As ZNLWVA, we are appalled by the callous, deliberate and intentional killing of George Floyd by law enforcement officers in full public glare in Minneapolis. “This heinous murder is typical of the deep-rooted racism of an American society that still struggles to shirk off the vestiges of the slavery of the African Diaspora.

“Having spent the flower of our youth militarily confronting settler minority racism, ZNLWVA easily finds itself in easy and natural empathy with this plight of the Afro-American community and other peoples of colour in USA.”

Floyd’s murder follows the death of Ahmaud Arbery who was shot dead in February by two white men while jogging through a neighbourhood just outside Brunswick, Georgia.

The shooters were only arrested this month after a video of the public execution surfaced. But authorities in Georgia had apparently tried to sweep the crime under the carpet. New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said the coronavirus crisis, which is also disproportionately exposing inequalities in health care in the US, and the protests were all connected.

“One looks like a public health system issue — Covid-19, but it’s getting at the inequality in health care also on a deeper level. Then the George Floyd situation, which gets at the inequality and discrimination in the criminal justice system. They are connected,” he said at his daily news briefing yesterday.

Police brutality in the US has always been riling minority communities, who feel there are always targeted. “The racist subjugation, segregation and abuse of black people is commonplace in America,” said political analyst Mr Godwine Mureriwa.

“President Trump himself has said the military will be deployed to shoot protestors on the streets; had this been Zimbabwe, this would have been World news and we would have been condemned by all, including America.

“But this mistreatment of black people has to be condemned and eradicated.” Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat has led the continent in condemning discrimination against people of colour in the US. In a statement on microblogging site Twitter yesterday, Mr Mahamat called on US authorities to facilitate the elimination of racial discrimination.

“I strongly condemn the murder of George Floyd that occurred in the United States of America at the hands of law enforcement officers, and wishes to extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” said Mr Mahamat.

“Recalling the historic OAU Resolution on Racial Discrimination in the USA made by African Heads of State at the OAU’s first Assembly in Cairo, Egypt from July 17-24, 1964, I reaffirm and reiterate the AU’s rejection of continuing discriminatory practices against Black citizens of the USA.

“I further urge the authorities in the United States of America to intensify their efforts to ensure the total elimination of all forms of discrimination based on race or ethnic origin.”

US embassies in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Congo and Kenya have released statements condemning the killing of Floyd. Mr Floyd was killed in Minneapolis on May 25 after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for eight minutes.

But, as the US was burning, the US Embassy in Zimbabwe was ironically tweeting in solidarity with the three MDC-Alliance members — Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova — who have been hauled before the courts for participating in an unauthorised demonstration.

Fake Zupco-franchised kombis flood roads

Fake Zupco-franchised kombis flood roads. Well, this might not always be the case. Apparently, there are private commuter omnibuses that have had the evil genius of finding a way of deceiving law enforcement agents that have been deployed to make sure that they do not operate outside the law. If it looks, sounds and drives like a Zupco bus, then it is definitely a Zupco bus.

The government announced on May 16 that private commuter omnibuses had been banned indefinitely. Only Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) buses and those operating under its franchise are allowed to operate. It, however, has not taken long for the notorious kombi crews to reinvent themselves under the guise of registered franchisees.

Presently, only the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) and commuter omnibuses operating under its franchise are allowed to ferry travellers. However, the service is failing to meet rising demand, especially at a time when the buses can only accommodate limited passengers as a result of current social distancing measures.

Each bus is expected to ferry a maximum of 32 passengers per trip while commuter omnibuses carry eight. Also, each bus is subjected to fumigation at least twice a day; thus, the time required to perform the exercise is understood to have greatly diminished Zupco’s ability to operate timeously.

Private-owned commuter omnibuses (kombis) were suspended when the lockdown began on March 30, but the ban has since been extended indefinitely as Government tries to create an organised mass public transport system.

Though noble, the decision is taking a toll on commuters. Thousands of urban travellers across the country are at risk of contracting the coronavirus as most are resorting to unregulated and often crowded transport. Banned kombi crews, pirate taxis (mushika-shika) and private motorists have moved in to fill the vacuum.

The Sunday Mail Society bumped into a man in Highfield who had a stash of Zupco stickers. After making an enquiry, the man became hostile. “What do you need the information for?” he queried. We, however, later discovered that he bought the insignia from an informal business centre in Gazaland or paGaza (Highfield).

“It is not kombis alone that are using fake stickers, even some privately-owned buses are operating disguised as Zupco,” revealed Kennedy Zenze, a kombi driver.

His shabbily dressed colleague was quick to add: “The Zupco emblem is all you need for easy passage on the road. During peak hours, there are usually long, winding queues, so passengers use any form of transport that comes their way and rarely complain about fares since they will be eager to reach their destinations with little or no hassle.”

Extortionate

Most commuters who have fallen victim to the fake Zupco buses say the tell-tale signs are both the operating times and the fare.

These rogue operators often charge more than the stipulated fares of $2 and $4 for a bus and commuter omnibus trip, respectively. They also do not observe social distancing or other recommended health guidelines.

According to current Government policy, buses must ferry a maximum of 32 passengers, while commuter omnibuses are allowed eight travellers per trip.

“It is the passengers’ option. We are not forcing anyone. We do not load every Zupco bus but specific ones. One decides on whether to wait for long in the queues or just make use of the relatively cheaper options. After all, there is no big difference between $4 and $10 compared to convenience,” said Tapfuma Tigere, a tout who recently resumed operations.

Fake stickers

But where are these fake stickers coming from? The Sunday Mail Society can reveal that fake Zupco insignia of different dimensions is readily available on the market. Prices differ with orders, but the cheapest set of the labels for a single kombi is being sold for US$15.

Original Zupco stickers do not have any particular security features and only contain a fleet number, company logo, Zimbabwe Bird and contact details. Moreover, there is no approved standard size of the labels for conventional buses or commuter omnibuses.

Equally, there is no specific requirement on placing of the sticker on the vehicle.  Automatically, this creates an easy conduit for counterfeit labels. Apparently, Zupco labels are done by a private contractor — Headline Communications.

“We do not have security features, so it is difficult for passengers to tell which one is fake or genuine,” said Zupco northern division depot manager, Mr Fungai Muchena.

“Each vehicle under Zupco has a fleet number at the front, just below the screen, on the right side. However, on other vehicles, it is on the left side. We are also working on having stickers at the back of each vehicle.”

It is believed that the State-owned entity, which recently severed ties to the other contractor that was engaged to produce the stickers, is presently tightening screws to address the anomaly.

There are suspicions that some of the printed labels are finding their way out through the backdoor. Headline Communications director Mr Percy Gore said the company has since been given instructions to work on new labels with improved security features.

“I was tasked by Zupco to work on security features. This was after they discovered that certain individuals are creating imitations. I am not sure though who is behind these bogus stickers or the numbers involved. We are also trying to find out,” said Mr Gore.

“The process of creating new features has already begun. We have created some security feature samples that we are set to present to authorities for approval before we embark on mass production,” further revealed Mr Gore.

Tempting fate

Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) president Mr Tafadzwa Goliati said most commuters are currently in harm’s way. “The transport shortage is real and people are resorting to these kombis because they have no option,” he said.

“There is real danger that they will contract the virus and further spread it. I do not understand why we are taking a casual approach to this possible catastrophe?” He believes that the government needs to reconsider the ban.

Criminal offence

Investigations to get to the bottom of the scandal are currently underway. “It is a criminal offence to make use of Zupco logo’s without approval. We cannot rule out that there are people currently doing so. We are investigating so that we flash out the culprits,” said Zupco’s acting chief executive officer Mr Evaristo Madangwa.

“Work on new markers is in progress. They will have security features like water-marks, among other things that our police and passengers can use to distinguish between genuine and fake Zupco buses,” he said.

Mr Madangwa urged the public to report any suspicious operators under their franchise either to them or the police. “Teams under the operations department are on the ground to investigate some of these issues. “However, it would help if the public give us leads,” he said.

Asked if the contracted company, including the former, did not have a hand in this confusion, he added: “ . . . as for our printers, our relationship is based on trust. We will be creating split waters if we are to follow-up and check on their operations.”

Jail sentences for offenders

“Some kombis are indeed evading checkpoints or roadblocks by using feeder roads or dropping passengers just before the points.

“We have embarked on an operation targeting them and we will also be arresting those who remove number plates or use wrong number plate types,” said police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

Pressure

Greater Harare Association of Commuter Operators (GHACO) secretary-general Mr Ngoni Katsvairo said they have since submitted a proposal to Government to be allowed to operate.

“The idea in the short term is good as Zupco is currently organised and has Government support and resources of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Mr Katsvairo. “However, our biggest worry is how many kombis will Zupco be able to absorb and whether Government will be able to subsidise them all.

‘‘Our understanding is that Zupco is looking to franchise less than 1 500 kombis. What will become of the rest of us?” Mr Katsvairo said they were prepared to reorganise their operations in line with Government requirements.

“The programme will provide an organised transport system if managed well through making sure that franchisees are paid fees commensurate with the costs of operation, paid and reviewed in time; cheaper spares are organised centrally by Zupco and a fleet upgrade system is urgently put in place.

“Customers will benefit from the absence of harassment by touts and better ranking infrastructure investment put in place at the drop and pick-up points.”

Bulawayo Public Transport Association (Bupta) chairperson Mr Morgan Msipa said banning commuter omnibuses completely could affect a sector supporting close to a million people. “We can organise ourselves and operate under regulations just as Zupco is doing. We will adhere to approved fares and treat our passengers with respect,” said Mr Msipa.

“But to say kombis should go all together is unjust. “There are over 50 000 kombis countrywide, 50 000 drivers depend on them, 50 000 conductors, 50 000 owners, about 10 000 mechanics and their families. These people can go hungry if we just leave them out just like that.”

Manicaland Transportation Association chairperson Esau Mupfumi reckons dialogue with Government is the only answer to the current crisis.

“We must follow restrictions and guidelines that have been set by Government. But we understand the challenges that our members are facing and we are engaging the relevant ministry for a way forward,” opines Zimbabwe Union of Drivers and Conductors (Zudac) president Fradrick Maguramhinga.

Maintain the status quo

Local Government and Public Works Minister Dr July Moyo said nothing changes for now.

“We are a consulting Government, so if there are any official proposals, we will hear them and decide since we have an open-door policy. But as for now, we expect everyone to follow regulations. Zupco will remain the sole operator and those join them can register.”

Falling short

While Government has invited private operators to join the Zupco franchise, some of them have either failed to pass the Central Mechanical and Equipment Department (CMED) test or are simply reluctant to do so. Zupco, however, recently added 294 privately-owned buses and kombis to its growing fleet.

But this was only after 326 vehicles and 221 drivers were tested by the CMED. Twenty-four of the drivers failed. The parastatal is targeting to grow its fleet to 1 000 commuter omnibuses and an equal number of conventional buses.

As of last week, Zupco had 637 buses and 752 kombis operating countrywide under its franchise. Surprisingly there seems to be more Zupco buses operating than reflected by figures in their database.

Kaizer Chiefs legend urges club to resign Warriors captain

Kaizer Chiefs legend urges club to resign Warriors captain. Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Ntokozo Sikhakhane has urged the club to resign Zimbabwe international striker Knowledge Musona who is no longer wanted at Belgian side RSC Anderlecht.

Sikhakhane told Soccer Laduma that though Musona would likely demand a lucrative contract since he will be coming from Europe, Chiefs should try to get him. He said:

Apart from contracts and money, with his style of play, I would say he must go back to where he comes from. He must go to where he knows the culture and the management. The supporters love him there, and that’s at Kaizer Chiefs. When he left for overseas the supporters were behind him and supporting him.

All I will say is that he must go back home, there’s no place like home, which is Kaizer Chiefs. Kaizer Chiefs are currently banned from signing players until after at least January 2021.

Musona has two years left on his deal with the Anderlecht who are keen on offloading him. The 29-year-old is believed to be on his way to a permanent deal at KAS Eupen, where he was on loan in the just-ended season.

Khupe roasted for consulting Tsvangirai’s spirit at his grave

Khupe roasted for consulting Tsvangirai’s spirit at his grave. Khupe, who was at loggerheads with Tsvangirai for several months before his death on Valentine’s Day in 2018, visited Humanikwa Village in Buhera to consult Tsvangirai’s “spirit” at his graveyards.

MDC-T acting president Thokozani Khupe has been ridiculed following her visit to the late party founding president Morgan Tsvangirai’s grave on Saturday.

She was accompanied by Douglas Mwonzora, Morgen Komichi and Elias Mudzuri among other senior party officials. Several commentators who aired their views on Twitter considered Khupe’s antics bizarre and hypocritical. Below are some of the comments gleaned from Twitter:

Davis Laque: It is strange to seek an audience with a dead man when you chose not to meet him when he could speak back. How is this a conversation? How does it make sense? What is MRT’s interest in the continued disintegration of a party he founded with others? The hypocrisy is amazing.

What exactly is the Legacy of Morgan Tsvangirai if you didn’t agree with his appointments of two additional VPs, and most importantly, reintegration with all factions that had moved out? How do these people reconcile this?

Pedzisai Ruhanya: Mwonzora, Khupe group believe in African magic in politics that’s why they are consulting the dead. Surely this can’t be allowed in modern politics; witchcraft as mode of governance, very archaic and primitive politics.

So Khupe thinks that the late Morgan Tsvangirai can speak and influence judges to get justice when he died with two court cases pending; 2000 and 2002 parliamentary and presidential election petitions respectively

Since June 2017 until his death in February 2018 Khupe refused to meet Tsvangirai. Suggested that she would want to meet Tsvangirai on a neutral venue in Chegutu, Morgan refused. MDC people know this. Now Khupe and Mwonzora lead a delegation to the grave of a man she defied.

David Coltart: Bizarre. Alfy: If you can’t win the living, go for the dead.😀 That moment you realise @nelsonchamisa has the masses, you end up going to try and appease the dead that you disrespected when they needed you. Time we should let MRT and his name RIP so that we can move on.

Alex Magaisa: This here is the video if you have the stomach for it. Knowing Save, he would be probably have said if he saw such a sight “Hanzi zvaita seiko nevanhu avo nhaiwe? Hah, no mhani zvinoita vanhu so” (What are they doing?) and he would burst into his trademark hearty laughter.

Norman Mapeza reflects on his incredible UEFA Champions League experience

Norman Mapeza reflects on his incredible UEFA Champions League experience. Former Warriors and FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza has said playing in the UEFA Champions League was the peak of his career.

Speaking Polish newspaper Futbol Arsiv, the 48-year-old recalled the matches against Barcelona and Manchester United in Europe’s premier club competition while he was at Turkish side Galatasaray. He said:

When I first went to Poland, I was afraid of snow. It was the first time I saw snow and I could not get out of the house. It was a good time for my career, it was the first time in Europe. The following year I received a proposal from Galatasaray and I ran to the running. I played in the Champions League against Barcelona and Manchester United. It was the peak of my career …

Everyone wanted to play in these games. And let me remind you, then entering the Champions League was much more difficult than it is now because only 16 teams could play at that time, not 32. This was an incredible feeling.

Then there were stars like Romario, Koeman or Guardiola, but none of them was Messi. There was no cliff between us. We were able to fight against Barcelona at breakeven. First of all, we had more experience.

We lost to Barcelona with only 2-1 in Camp Nou. Other Zimbabwean players to have played in the UEFA Champions League include Benjani Mwaruwari with AJ Auxerre (France) and Marvelous Nakamba when he was still at Club Brugge (Belgium).

Gospel singer Sbu Noah penned the sweetest birthday message to his mother, taking the chance to praise her for how she raised him. Sbu took to Instagram to thank his mother and share a little bit about the woman he calls mom. When I tell the story of this woman I call mom; people think I’m talking about a movie I’ve watched or book I’ve read! Hers is a story of faith, resilience, and hope. Her faith makes my faith look like its nothin … her resilience, she has survived so much yet handles tough situations with so much grace only God can give … hope, my goodness, I’ve never met someone who, no matter how hard things are but somehow finds a way to believe that things will get better!” he wrote.

The singer went on to share analogies that show his mother’s character and how no matter what life throws at her, her love for her children always prevailed. Sbu equated his mother’s love to that of an angel sent to give him and his family a chance to experience God’s heart.

Maybe it’s the undying love she has for her children (she literally will do anything for us), or maybe the love she has for people (remind me to tell you about our fight about me sending money for food and her asking for more in a short space of time, only to get home and there’s no food cause she gave it away to the needy lol), or the love she has for God, but I swear she’s an angel sent to us to taste the heart of God. I’ve done so much for her, yet it never feels enough. I haven’t asked her about any boyfriend before dad but she’s dramatic too and I’m looking forward to her response 🤣🤣🤣 For now please help me celebrate my Mom; Thembisile Mthembu; the woman who gave birth to me, my brother and sister. It’s her birthday today… I love her so much. Happy birthday Queen ❤️❤️❤️

Returnees speak of horrors in COVID-19 isolation centres

Returnees speak of horrors in COVID-19 isolation centres. A woman who recently tested positive for coronavirus and had been quarantined at Masvingo Teachers’ College has revealed the stigma and rejection she and others have been subjected to since their status was revealed.

Agnes Parwada (25) is from Zaka in Masvingo province and was part of a 400-plus group of returnees from South Africa and Botswana housed at the Masvingo Teachers’ College and last Tuesday.

Parwada is among 12 returnees, – seven women and five men – who were told that they had tested positive by officials from the Health Ministry on May 26. She said: When we arrived on May 8, tests were conducted on us. They took our blood for testing, but we never got the results.

Others were not tested and we [the tested and untested] continued to live as a community, sharing items like plates, cups and spoons. [A week later] We were just told we were positive, but not shown the results. We were just told we were positive, but not shown the results.

This was the turning point.

The doctors and the other health officials were rude to us when we wanted to ask questions, only insisting that we should simply know that we are positive. I vividly remember one of the doctors saying to us: ‘You have coronavirus, you are dangerous to others.

That statement was like a needle pricking our hearts. I remember very well that one of the men wanted to commit suicide. After the announcement of the results, no one in the hostels wanted to get close to us.

We did not go to the canteen that day because we were being shunned. We started feeling rejected and lonely… Parwada said the following day, they were taken to Rujeko Clinic in Masvingo by a team of police officers accompanied by soldiers.

They spent hours in the cold and were only given shelter after 11 pm and they have since gone for over a day, at times, without getting any food.

Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare expressed disbelief over Parwada’s story. He said: I cannot comment, but I doubt if anything like that can ever happen. Masanga referred The Standard to the social welfare provincial head for Masvingo Stansilus Sanyangone, who refused to comment saying he needed clearance first.

31-year-old woman dies in Gweru Quarantine Isolation Centre. This was revealed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Ndavaningi Nick Mangwana. A Zimbabwean returnee who was in quarantine at Mkoba Teachers’ College, Gweru, Midlands Province has died.

Mangwana said that the deceased was a 31-year old woman and the cause of her death is still to be established. He said: We wish to notify of the tragic passing on of one of the residents housed at Mkoba Teachers College. The deceased was a 31-year-old woman. Cause of death is not yet established. Details will be given once available. Our condolences are with the bereaved family and friends.

The development was confirmed by Midlands Provincial Medical Director (PMD), who said the cause of the woman’s death was unknown and a medical team is carrying out investigations to establish the cause. He said: I can confirm that a woman who returned from South Africa and was staying at Mkoba Teacher’s College quarantine centre in Gweru died today (yesterday).

The woman returned from South Africa together with her husband. Her medical history shows that she had not been feeling well for some time. She is said to have been ill for a long time.

However, we are investigating the case to see if it is related to Covid-19. Indications also show that she might have succumbed to other ailments. We will furnish you with more details once we ascertain the cause of her death

Currently, 358 returnees from South Africa and Botswana are quarantined in the Midlands province at Gweru Polytechnic College and Mkoba Teachers College as a way of mitigating against the spread of Covid-19.

On Sunday, 89 citizens from South Africa and Botswana returned home and they were immediately placed under mandatory quarantine. 48 of them came from South Africa and the other 41 from Botswana.

Returnee reveals her experience on FastJet from Joburg to Harare

Returnee reveals her experience on FastJet from Joburg to Harare. The airliner has released a statement about its flights with information for those who wish to apply for a flight back to Zimbabwe. FastJet Zimbabwe has begun the process of repatriating Zimbabwean citizens from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Harare during this lockdown period.

Below is the experience of a Zimbabwean citizen who returned home aboard a FastJet flight a few days ago: Good morning everyone. Finally back on home soil! Currently sitting in the sun, reflecting on such good fortune 🙌🏾 This is how things happened yesterday, to help guide future flights:

1. All made our way to the Zim Consulate and met with Desire, working with Fastjet. He read our names from a list and we gave him our completed Port Health forms as he made copies for the government and gave us back our copies. Loaded the bus and went to the airport.

Please ensure you use the surgical type masks from the time you arrive at the consulate until you are off the plane in Harare. The cloth masks are disregarded at this point. We got lucky there was someone on the bus with a whole box so those without were covered – teamwork is huge with Zimbos!

2. Arrive at the airport, stay on the bus as they take our luggage outside the bus. Stand by all your bags as the dogs sniff them. Take bags and start heading into the check-in area

3. As you enter the airport doors, officials take your port health form and your passport to check the 2 against each other and take details. Temperature is taken then you head to the check-in point

4. Passport brought back to you while you wait in line, social distancing all the way, check-in luggage. They sanitized the counter after each person checked in. There was a guy whose sole job was to spray spray spray!

5. Head to the boarding gate, social distancing observed throughout, wait to get on the plane. Lovely crew, we sat with seats skipped between us to observe social distancing. Received bottled water, appreciated.

6. In flight, handed a form to complete for the Zim side documenting travel history in the last 3 weeks I think, and such details. On arrival in Harare, the temperature is taken as you walk in.

7. Complete more forms, much the same type of info, and asked where you will be going to quarantine. If going into government, they wrote that on your firm as you check-in past immigration so they can allocate.

8. Collect your luggage and wait for everyone to meet. Officials address with next steps, those with private accommodation arranged are taken to their places. Those in government quarantine – same. I opted for government quarantine and prayed for weeks that it would be manageable -will follow up with comments on this after the process.

9. No actual test was performed at the airport, it was the only temperature. Even upon arrival at government quarantine, no test. We had a Zincat escort ahead of us from the airport, put on a bus. They were expecting us so staff and rooms were ready to receive us.

Gave names and passport numbers, escorted to rooms and dinner was brought to our rooms. Each has their own room and own bathroom, 3 meals a day, wifi and really nice staff and police guarding outside… good fortune!

10. A nurse will come daily to take temperature and check for symptoms. The test I believe on day 8. We can stand on the balcony but masks on all the time and the preference is for us to remain in our rooms. Had a good night’s sleep.

Unsure process with those in private quarantine upon arrival and beyond, but will check in with someone there. It will be over soon!

Bonnie Mbuli highlights racism in the entertainment industry

Veteran actress, Bonnie Mbuli has spoken up about the attempts to silence her activism voice by entertainment gatekeepers. The former Afternoon Express television host told the story of being called into a meeting by a producer that told her that she needs “to be less heavy and political, be happy and frivolous.

Bonnie states that she stuck to her guns instead of following the advice of the producer in order to secure the bag. She goes on to suggest that the decision to do so was important for her because agreeing to have you voice silenced will mean that “you’re forgetting that most times the hand that feeds you shares a body with the knee on your neck.

Bonnie Mbuli

Her thread did not suggest that race of the person that was advising her. But when asked by a tweep with the name Promise, if the advice came from someone of a different race and Bonnie confirmed it was and strategically addressed Promise as Karen. Get it?

Douglas Mwonzora orders MDC A MPs to attend parliament

Douglas Mwonzora orders MDC A MPs to attend parliament. The MDC Alliance took a stand recently to ‘disengage’ from all parliamentary business in protest over Speaker Jacob Mudenda’s alleged bias against the beleaguered group. Reinstated MDC secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora has ordered all MPs who have sided with MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa in the ensuing MDC feud to return to parliament this coming Tuesday.

This followed the shock expulsion of four senior party MPs from the house on the orders of the Thokozani Khupe led group which has been granted interim party stewardship in the MDC leadership feud.

A last-ditch court bid by the Chamisa led the group to stop further expulsions hit a brick wall after High Court Judge Tawanda Chitapi Friday ruled MDC Alliance was not a political party but a grouping of like-minded political forces.

Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com Saturday, Mwonzora said his faction did not harbour any vindictive intentions towards MPs who should, however, consider he wielded authority to sanction them if they did not toe the line.

“We will not be vindictive, and we have always made that point clear,” Mwonzora said.  “Going forward, I am ordering all MDC MPs to attend parliamentary sessions starting this Tuesday.

“There is need for them to acknowledge the period we are in, which is the Covid-19 period that requires that they play their role and duty for Zimbabwe. “They should also realise that the issue of who has power to recall them from parliament has been settled.”

In a separate interview with NewZimbabwe.com, reinstated MDC-T national chair Morgan Komichi threatened defiant MPs with the dreaded recall if they failed to obey orders from their new bosses. “At least now it has been confirmed that MDC-T is the party which has legal claim to the MPs,” he said.

“We would advise every Member of Parliament who was seconded by MDC to comply with the party rules and regulations and the constitution. “Section (5) (10) (a) is so clear in its operation that if any Member of Parliament or any person in MDC-T chooses to support another party other than MDC, then his/her contract is automatically terminated.

“Any member of Parliament who would not come to Parliament without a valid reason, someone who deliberately boycotts parliament business and clearly indicates that she is in support of another party other than MDC-T is automatically withdrawn.

“The MPs were seconded to Parliament by MDC-T which is their party anyway, otherwise the so-called MDC Alliance is not recognised,” said Komichi. On attending the July 31 extra-ordinary congress that was ordered by the courts, Komichi expressed that every member was free to come and attend the elective event.

Distruction Boyz has a new record label

Gqom duo Distruction Boyz have launched their own record label, Distruction Records. They have already signed three talented artists and producers to the label: BlaQRhythm, Drega and K Dot

The group’s Que told TshisaLIVE that they first met BlaQRhythm in around 2012. He was still doing gqom at the time, but later changed his sound to Afro-tech. Que said he is now like a brother to them. BlaQRhythm is a really good producer. Even Black Coffee plays his music and uses his songs in his promos. That’s the reason we have him in our stable,” he said. Distruction Boyz are planning to sign more artists in the future, but for now they are focussing on these three, as well as themselves. That’s always every label manager’s dream – to have a bigger stable and to have more people who can have their future changed through music,” said Que.

Distruction Boyz

Que and his partner in the popular duo, Goldmax, will be releasing separate EPs in June. Goldmax will be doing something that is close to his heart and I will be doing something that is close to my heart. We are releasing a Distruction Boyz project. We are flooding the market with good music this year!

Que added that if it wasn’t for Covid-19, they would have probably already released the songs by now, but the virus has held them back a bit. I’m not complaining, but it has given us more time to work on our craft. The singles will be released in June. For the full body of work, we haven’t decided on the date yet.

22-year-old girl r@ped and killed inside a church. Nigerian media has reported a case of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a first-year Microbiology student of the University of Benin who was allegedly r@ped and murdered inside the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

The reports indicate that Vera had gone into the church to read, whist preparing for a possible school resumption. While reading, unknown men entered the church, r@ped her and smashed her head with a fire extinguisher, leaving her for dead.

The papers said thee church’s security officer had gone to collect the keys to the church from its keeper when he was told that there was someone in the church already.

He got to the church only to find Uwaila in a pool of blood and next to her was the fire extinguisher which was used to bash her face.

He ran back to inform the key keeper and his wife, who went to the church to meet her lifeless, thinking she was dead. After careful observation, they noticed she moved her hand and quickly rushed her to the hospital.

It was at the hospital that Uwaila revealed she was reading all alone when some unknown men came into the church, beat, r@ped and hit her head with a fire extinguisher. However, she later passed on.

Commenting on the matter senior Nigerian Christian leader Apostle Johnson Suleman said, “I just spoke with the governor…the death of Vera Uwaila won’t be swept under the carpet…if someone could have the nerve to come to kill a girl inside the church, then there would be consequences…if there are madmen, there are psychiatric doctors.”

Bulawayo tycoon demands justice for man killed by police

Bulawayo tycoon demands justice for man killed by police. Bulawayo born venture capitalist and hedge fund manager Kelvin Mazhandu has issued a message of condolence to the family of the Bulawayo city man Paul Munakopa who was killed by details of the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

Munakopa was killed by police officers last Saturday after a high-speed chase. Said Mazhandu, “I have read the gruesome murder of an innocent civilian by our law enforcement agents. It pains me to see this kind of brutality happening to fellow citizens especially committed by the state agents who are supposed to enforce and abide by the responsibility to protect principle.

“Chapter 4 of the Zimbabwean constitution hold the right to life as a sacrosanct right which must never be taken away from any human being. So far there are no reports that the late citizen was armed or possessed any weapon. If life can be taken away so easily, I shudder to imagine what kind of society have we become. Remember God says in the book of Genesis: What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground.

“God is Supreme, God is not blind, and God avenges innocent blood. I pray as a nation we repent from our wicked ways and seek the faith of love, peace and justice. “In my own capacity as Mazhandu and in my other capacity as the President of Zimbabwe Christian Leaders in South Africa, I would be reaching out to the Munakopas soon and we see how we can help.

The late brother was a father, an uncle and a son. If it can happen to him, it means it can happen to any of us.”

Meanwhile Bulawayo social media influencers have launched an online campaign called #Justice4Paul which seek to compel the state and the justice system to bring closure to the Munakopa’s case.

ED spokesperson warns America: SADC Standby Brigade is ready

ED spokesperson warns America: SADC Standby Brigade is ready. Floyd died after being arrested by police outside a shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Footage of the arrest on 25 May shows a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd’s neck while he was pinned to the floor.

Presidential Spokesperson George Charamba says Zimbabwe might find it necessary to summon United States of America Brian A. Nichols to question him on the violent protests that are rocking America after the death of George Floyd.

Said Charamba, “I THINK THE ZIMBABWEAN GOVT should summon the US Ambassador to explain the goings-on in the US!! This is unusual, continuing and extraordinary grave threat to Zimbabwe’s strategic interest globally!!! And of course, a grave threat to international peace requiring invocation of UN Chapter 7.”

Charamba added that if America fails to follow the Responsibility to Protect Principle, the SADC Standby force was ready to be deployed.

“Clearly the Administration is unable to protect US citizens, in which case RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT stricture must kick in. The SADC STANDBY BRIGADE is supremely ready to deploy at all maximum means and capabilities needed to put out this raging fire!!!”

The Responsibility to Protect Principle says each individual State has the responsibility to protect its populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. This responsibility entails the prevention of such crimes, including their incitement, through appropriate and necessary means

The SADC Brigade, which was launched in August 2008, is made up of military, police and civilian members from SADC Member States.

The Function of the Brigade is to participate in missions as envisaged in Article 13 of the “mandate” of the Peace and Security Protocol relating to the Establishment of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, which includes:
• Observation and monitoring missions;
• Peace support missions;
• Interventions for peace and security restoration at the request of a Member State; and
• Actions to prevent the spread of conflict to neighbouring states, or the resurgence of violence after agreements have been reached.

Brian A. Nichols

The SADC Brigade serves in peace-building efforts including post-conflict disarmament and demobilisation and humanitarian assistance in conflict areas and areas impacted by major natural disasters.

The SADC Brigade operates as a tool of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation and receives its guidance from the SADC Committee of Chiefs of Defence staff and the Committee of SADC Police Chiefs.

Training of the Brigade at all levels is a key priority for SADC. The Regional Peacekeeping Training Centre located in Zimbabwe and other national peace support training institutions play a pivotal role in training military commanders, police officers and civilian officials at various levels.
