Job Sikhala threatens 5-day protest

Job Sikhala threatens 5-day protest. Last Friday, the government unleashed the police and soldiers to stop the planned protest by locking down urban centres and suburbs – a move that stopped potential picketers from assembling. But the heavy show of force by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government appeared not to have cowed organisers of the protesters.

The organisers of the abortive July 31 protest say they will roll out five days of demonstrations next week against alleged wanton looting and corruption. A defiant MDC vice-chairperson Job Sikhala yesterday said they had not been discouraged by the Friday setback.

“From tomorrow, Monday (yesterday), the 3rd of August, we urge all of you to have an opportunity to stock food. This is called upon because we need to speak more loudly for the entire week starting Monday the loth of August to the 15th,” Sikhala said in a statement.

“That will be the week of action. This time it won’t be a one-day event. It will be a week of expression against corruption and looting. This time we are also speaking against gross human rights abuses against us.”

He added: “Why are you bringing violence against the people? People are peaceful in their homes and you raid them at night and beat them. Dear Zimbabweans, we need to stop it. This has gone against all tenets of civilisation and human dignity. Why are people being beaten up? Why are people being tortured, why are people being arrested for no crime? Kwayi unnecessary movements? What is that in a modern state, in the 21st century? No, no, no. We can’t accept this, one week action from the loth of August to the 15th.

“… This thing will continue indefinitely until soldiers are withdrawn from citizens’ residences. We are reviewing the way forward and we will inform the world very soon. We cannot and will not retreat; it must remain protracted until we have achieved the results we want.”

Another organiser of the protests, former Zanu PF youth league political commissar Godfrey Tsenengamu, said the retreat was not an option. “We are obviously not going to stop protesting till we get the results because getting their attention alone without them addressing our concerns is not enough. They have to stop the looting and address the concerns of the people,” said Tsenengamu.

Novelist and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga decries state chokehold. Tsitsi Dangarembga, whose latest book This Mournable Body has been nominated for a Booker Prize, was bundled into a police truck while holding placards on Friday and charged with breaking the Covid-19 lockdown to hold an illegal gathering.

A prize-winning Zimbabwean novelist and filmmaker arrested at recent protests accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government on Tuesday of holding its people in a repressive “chokehold” as they endured an economic emergency.

Bailed pending trial after a night in jail, the 61-year-old said she could not keep quiet while neglect and mismanagement left Zimbabweans unable to afford a decent meal and healthcare.

“These are things that are outside the reach of most Zimbabweans. It’s like the people of Zimbabwe are in a chokehold,” she told Reuters from her home in Harare’s affluent Borrowdale suburb. “It’s a matter of survival really.”

Security forces were deployed on Friday to block planned opposition protests over corruption and economic hardships. Foes say Mnangagwa is behaving like his autocratic predecessor Robert Mugabe and exploiting the coronavirus crisis as cover.

‘Who is paying you?’

Popular anger is high over inflation above 700%, hospital strikes, and shortages of medicines and foreign currency. Mnangagwa blames the opposition, Western sanctions, droughts and the pandemic. “Dark forces both inside and outside have tampered with our growth and prosperity,” he said in a speech on Tuesday.

Dangarembga said she had been lucky after rights groups said some activists rounded up over Friday’s unrest were abducted and tortured. The government denies that.  “When we got into the (police) truck one of the first thing that happened is I was asked ‘who is paying you?’ I was very outraged by that question,” she recalled.

“What was going through my mind was:’what do we do now? The main thing is not to escalate the situation, we have not done anything wrong so we shouldn’t be frightened’.” Dangarembga noted that a new hashtag #ZimbabweansLivesMatter was helping focus global attention.

“Trying to change Zimbabwe for the better is going to be a long engagement and we have to strategise,” she said. Dangarembga’s first novel Nervous Conditions was part of Zimbabwe’s school curriculum and won the African section of the Commonwealth Writers Prize in 1989. She also wrote “Neria”, Zimbabwe’s most successful film.

Beitbridge Border closed after 5 ZIMRA officials tested positive for COVID-19. The Beitbridge Border Post was on Monday temporarily closed for decontamination after five employees of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) tested positive for COVID-19, amid unconfirmed reports that the cases had risen to 12.

The development was confirmed by Zimra spokesperson Francis Chimanda who insisted that only five workers had been infected.

You may have heard the border will close between 2 pm and 8 pm. Chimanda had earlier urged Zimra staff countrywide to remain vigilant and observe outlined measures by his organisation to curb the spread of COVID-19 at its offices, inland ports and borders.

He added that some Zimra stations and offices shall maintain critical skeleton staff who are being provided with appropriate personal protective equipment and sanitisers. This comes as ZIMRA has already lost top official Thabani Sibanda who succumbed to coronavirus resulting in the closure of the Chiredzi offices where he had interacted with staff during a workshop just before he passed on.

Report: ED knows what he is doing, he is setting Chiwenga a trap

Report: ED knows what he is doing, he is setting Chiwenga a trap. Last month Obadiah Moyo was sacked as Health Minister after being implicated in the USD$60m CovidGate tender scandal. He was arrested and bailed on ZWL$50 000.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has bizarrely appointed his Vice President Constantino Chiwenga as the Minister of Health and Childcare with immediate effect. In a statement, the government justified the former military General’s appointment (he has no experience whatsoever in the medical field) arguing he would turn around the ailing health sector.

“In terms of Section 99 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No.20) Act 2013, His Excellency the President, Cde EC Mnangagwa has appointed Hon Vice President Dr C D G N Chiwenga as minister of Health and Child Care.

“In making this decision, His Excellency the President has noted the urgent need to stabilise, restructure and reform the National Health Delivery System to better cope with challenges of the global Covid-19 pandemic, and in the process, ensuring a quick turn-around in national Healthcare,” read the statement.

The health sector has been on autopilot for more than a month without a minister, permanent secretary and public hospitals health directors.

Political commentator, Pedzisai Ruhanya said Chiwenga’s appointment as Minister of Health at a critical time when the health sector is disarray and Covid-19 at its peak are machinations designated to make Chiwenga take the fall for Mnangagwa and divert public public scrutiny from the leader’s growing unpopularity.

“After appointing a soldier as permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health yesterday, Mnangagwa has appointed VP Gen Chiwenga as Minister of Health. Health has been militarised probably too intimidate doctors and nurses who have been on strike for 47 days #ZimbabweanLivesMatter.

“In politics if you have a problem with an internal adversary you give that person a heavy burden in order to fail him so that those who look up to that person see failure all over. That’s what ED has done to his VP Gen Chiwenga by pointing him to be Minister of Health,” Ruhanya said.

Chiwenga in 2018 bizarrely fired 16 000 striking nurses who were protesting for a pay hike and favourable working conditions.

Legal experts speak on VP Chiwenga’s appointment as Minister of Health

Dr General Chiwenga’s appointment is Constitutional. The matter was started by MDC Secretary for Education Advocate Fadzayi Mahere who said, “That appointment is unconstitutional as it violates s103 of the Constitution.

The appointment of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga as Minister of Health sparked a legal debate erupted among legal experts on social media. However, knowledgeable top lawyers including Nelson Chamisa’s lawyer agree that the appointment is Constitutional.

The Vice-President is not permitted to hold any other public office while in office. Respect the Constitution. The appointment is a nullity and must be set aside.” Bulawayo’s leading lawyer Sindiso Mazibisa said the appointment of the President was legal because Section 103 must not be read in isolation but must be read together with Section 99.

“There is really not much into the issue because section 103 must be read together with section 99 which spells out the Vice President,” Mazibisa said. “According to section 99 the Vice Presidents assist the President in the discharge of his or her functions and perform any other functions, including the administration of any Ministry, department or Act of Parliament, that the President may assign to them.

Technically it means as long as the Vice President does not hold any office outside cabinet and gets double salary he is within his rights to assist the President by administering any Ministry or Act of Parliament.”

National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader, Lovemore Madhuku who is also a leading Constitutional law expert in the country said there is precedent as the Concourt has already dealt with this issue.

In 2014, when the then VP Emmerson Mnangagwa remained Minister of Justice, the NCA took President Mugabe to the Concourt and the court ruled that Sections 99 and 103 of the Constitution must be read together.

“The Concourt has already dealt with this issue. In 2014, when the then VP ED remained Minister of Justice, the NCA took President Mugabe to the Concourt raising exactly the arguments being debated now. The Concourt said secs 99 and 103 must be read together,” said Madhuku.

“There are no short stories in law. The Concourt has previously said it is constitutional. It is most likely to say so again. That is the shortest I can go.”

Chamisa’s lawyer agrees that the appointment is Constitutional but patently stupid. “Perfectly lawful but patently stupid,” said Mpofu.

Tendai Biti, the Deputy President of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa exhibited his ignorance of precedent which was set by the highest court of the land when he said the appointment is clearly null and void.

“The appointment is clearly null & void & must be tested in a court of law. It violates the constitution but more than that it is irrational & grossly unreasonable. No person of sound mind, properly applying his mind, would have made the same.”

The matter was brought to finality by Professor Lovemore Madhuku who said there is a constitutional court determination on a similar matter.

“I have already responded to a tweet elsewhere that our Concourt dealt with this issue when the NCA challenged ED as both VP and Minister of Justice. The court said sections 99 and 103 must be read together with the result that a VP may lawfully be also responsible for a Ministry.” Madhuku said.

“According to the Concourt, reading the two secs together means: a VP may be made responsible for the administration of a Ministry. He need not be called Minister. On this interpretation, ED combined VP and Justice, and later VP Chiwenga had Defence. Concourt will say so again.”

Covid-19 saved us from overspending during woman’s month – Hulisani Ravele

Presenter Hulisani Ravele and veteran actress Florence Masebe are thankful Covid-19 has pressed pause on the lunches, brunches and soirées dedicated to women every August, and hope the focus shifts to the changes women need.

August is women’s month in SA and is usually filled with events to “celebrate” women. However, the pandemic has ensured 2020 is treated differently, thanks to lockdown regulations.

Hulisani Ravele

“Covid-19 saved us from the women’s month lunches,” Florence tweeted. Hulisani shared similar sentiments, and went a step further to suggest that perhaps August 2020 is the right time to shift the focus to matters that need attention, like equal payment for women and men.

“Dear corporates, spare your female employees these Women’s Day brunches and talks and soirées blah blah, and just use that money to bump up their salary packages to their male counterparts. That’s how you can celebrate women, that’s how you can honour them. Thanks,” Hulisani said.

While most women seemed to agree with Hulisani, some men weren’t on the same page.

Besides asking where it was happening, they argued that perhaps things like the “racial payment gap” should get more immediate attention.

Obvs, Hulisani wasn’t here for any of that type of talk on her TL, and she directed them to the graphic below.

Socialite Mahwindo suspends home visits due to COVID-19. The popular events management guru, who through Mahwindo Foundation has been changing the lives of the vulnerable people on Covid-19 lockdown, has decided to carry most of her activities electronically.

Socialite and philanthropist Wanisayi “Mahwindo” Mutandwa has suspended home visits to monitor recipients of the aid sourced through her foundation. In an interview, the mother of one said she was now treading with caution as cases of the Covid-19 pandemic continue to rise.

As of yesterday, 4075 had tested positive while 1057 recovered with 80 deaths recorded so far. It is the surge in new infections in Harare and its environs which has seen Mahwindo suspending home visits, which had become her regular routine in her quest to change people’s lives on lockdown.

“I’m no longer visiting most of the recipients of the aid sourced through Mahwindo Foundation because of the current situation we are in at the moment,” said Mahwindo whose foundation has been helping the sick, elderly and abandoned children.

Notable beneficiaries of her philanthropic work comprise ailing street theatre actor Charles “Marabha” Mapalume, the sick, elderly, Norton orphans and two sets of triplets who desperately need care among others.

After her philanthropic works was highly publicised, Mahwindo has been receiving calls from people appealing for help from as far as Zvishavane, Bulawayo and Masvingo among parts of the country.

However, she said she was finding it hard to be in touch with all the vulnerable as cases of Covid-19 continue to rise with each passing day.

MahwindoNEW STANCE
However, Mahwindo who is among the frontline workers during this era, said she would not abandon her work despite the new stance she has taken. “I have just taken a new stance which will see me doing most of the work through the phone or electronic transfers.

“I would not take a risk by travelling a lot as I used to do when the cases of Covid-19 were still under control. “Despite the new stance I have taken, I will continue monitoring the recipients through the phone.

“If I get anything from my bosses (sponsors) I will contact the recipients and make logistics so that they receive their aid.

“In cases where some of the consignments need to be delivered, I will get in touch with people who offer those services so that the aid gets to the people,” she said.

DISAPPOINTMENT
Despite all her efforts, the hardworking Mahwindo has expressed her disappointment over bogus applicants who are trying to get help unscrupulously by disguising as sick or vulnerable people.

“At a time when we are helping the vulnerable people, we still have some of the bogus applicants who are appealing for help from us.

“We however do thorough vetting so that we don’t give aid to the crooks at the expense of deserving people in our midst. “We have dealt with some of the cases of bogus people appealing for help at the expense of deserving people and it is really worrying, “she said.

HwindoCOMMITMENT
Despite all the enemies and friends she has created as a result of her philanthropic work, Mahwindo said she was only using her influence to change people’s lives.

“Like I have said before, Mahwindo Foundation is there the to change people’s lives and I am only using my influence as a mother, socialite and now philanthropist to assist the people. “We are not in this to compete or to for publicity but it is a calling in me that I am following.

“I have learnt the power of giving from my late mother who used to assist others and it is my responsibility to do so,” she said. Since the formation of Mahwindo Foundation, the socialite has been grabbing headlines for all but good reasons.

Her foundation was formed to mainly support artistes and athletes so that they take their professions seriously as well as preparing the for life after their careers.

The foundation was also formed to cater for the welfare of artistes and athletes at the time whet ye are at the peak as well as in eventualities like death and misfortune, accidents. Mahwindo is working closely with a retired athlete who used to ply his trade in Europe for over a decade before he called it quits.

Don’t share your marriage problems on social media. The call was made by the minister of religion and marriage officer Apostle Benjamin Murata following reports by members made to join female groups Nhoroondo Ladies only and Hani where women share their marital problems.

Married women have been warned over-sharing bedroom matters on social media amid reports of rising divorce cases.

One of the group administrators was alleged to have disclosed contact numbers of the married women facing problems leading lustful men to approach them for sex in their WhatsApp inboxes. Apostle Murata threatened to expose men and women involved in this scam he described as evil and enemy of holy matrimonies.

“God respect families since the world was created from a family set up of God the father, Son Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit,” said Apostle Murata. “Marriage wreckers are enemies of God and of the church because families are also regarded as the first church where God conveys his messages to nations.

“It is unpleasing to learn that there are social media groups being administered by people claiming to be best in addressing marital issues when they are after destroying them with their advice.

“Women sharing their bedroom life issues through social media are likely to face difficulties and risk their marriages because of ill-informed reports coming to our attention.

“Marriages must receive some blessings since many of them are from bad background hence the need to align them in accordance to the word of God for them to survive in all weather.

“Kuputsika kwadzo kunoenderana nekuti imba yacho yakatangasei yatangira papi pedyo nanani saka kugovana mashoko ezvinowanikwa mudzimba pa social media injodzi huru,” said Apostle Murata. He said issues of describing sizes of manhood and sexual satisfaction has become a devil’s playing ground in a way to destroy marriages.

“God created man and woman including their private parts to suit the intended purposes so those raising issues of dissatisfaction are being used by the devil,” said Apostle Murata.

“There is a need for a couple to share your love stories as well as bedroom issues openly before and during the marriage. “The first affection that united you is stronger to meet marriage needs that are why the word of God says the devil came to steal, kill and destroy.

“Love can be stolen before it is killed and finally destroyed so one way being used by the devil is through abuse of social media, the introduction of s.e.x enhancers and topical these days are so-called herbs.

“Panevafana vaita mari netswanya mashizha emimango akaoma votengesa vachiti ma hernbs emisana vachidyira vanhu mari ndapota musadzimaidzwe kudaro nekuda kwebonde,” said Apostle Murata.

He urged couples to seek counselling other than sharing their issues with people who are after making names in the name of helping marriages.

A married woman shared with her husband messages sent by a young man asking to quench her sexual appetite. The young man pleaded with the couple for forgiveness and H-Metro overexposing his messages and photographs.
