Nick Mangwana: ED has not deferred opening of schools

Nick Mangwana: ED has not deferred the opening of schools. Schools are set to open next Monday for Second Term but a spike in Covid-19 cases has seen Government imposing localised lockdowns to contain the pandemic. This has seen educationist unions lobbying the government to postpone the reopening of schools until the end of winter.

Government has dismissed fake social media claims that President Mnangagwa has deferred schools opening by a further two weeks. The spike in Covid-19 cases also saw fake new peddlers creating a message alleging that the President has pushed back the schools reopening.

In a statement on Twitter on Tuesday morning, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Mr Nick Mangwana said so far there has not been a change on schools’ calendar.

“We have taken note of messages circulating on the WhatsApp platform alleging that the President has deferred the opening of schools by two weeks. That is not correct. Should there be a change regarding the opening of schools, Govt will make a formal announcement,” said Mr Mangwana.

The decision regarding opening of schools is expected to be announced after today’s Cabinet meeting. National Covid-19 taskforce coordinator Dr Agnes Mahomva told our sister publication Sunday News over the weekend that the issue of the opening of schools would be on Cabinet agenda as Government is led by science in implementing Covid-19 prevention measures.

“We are looking into it. You are aware there is a taskforce that is always guided by science. We look at data on the ground and we make decisions based on that data. This taskforce meets every Monday and Cabinet sits every Tuesday. You will definitely hear from that process,” said Dr Mahomva.

Finance Minister Ncube: Tugwi Mukosi Dam a potential game-changer. Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, says massive economic development projects could be unleashed from the Tugwi Mukosi Dam, which would contribute more to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The minister visited the dam project recently where he highlighted the need to urgently harness opportunities from the giant water body.

“I visited Tugwi-Mukosi dam in Masvingo province. The dam has a massive capacity of 1.8 billion cubic meters of water, for irrigation, fisheries, tourism facilities, and hydropower generation. When unleashed, this potential is a game-changer,” he posted on Twitter.

Tugwi -Mukosi dam has over 10 islands which can accommodate hotels, lodges, camping facilities, inter alia. All these developments, including irrigated agricultural activities, will contribute to the GDP of the province and country at large.”

Deeds proving OSISA director owns farm govt seized from him disappear

Deeds proving OSISA director owns farm govt seized from him disappear. Malunga who is the son of the late national hero Sydney Malunga made the claims on Monday saying they still have copies of the documents.

Documents proving that Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) executive director Siphosami Malunga owns the farm that is controversially being seized by the state have reportedly disappeared at the Deeds office.  He said:

The levels of sordidness and underhandedness related to our farm issue are shocking. We gather someone removed the documents proving ownership from the files at the deeds and companies’ office. We have copies that we shared with authorities. We will reveal who we believe could have and why.

The OSISA director claims that he co-owns the 553-hectare farm in Nyamandlovu, Matabeleland North, together with two acquaintances. He says they bought the farm four years ago, and that the seizure is revenge by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime for his human rights advocacy.

The government, however, argues it acquired the land from a white farmer years ago “for purposes of agriculture resettlement” and that Malunga doesn’t own it. Malunga says while the acquisition was published in the Government Gazette in December 2020, they only became aware of it last week when they received a call from a lands officer.

Human rights campaigners have condemned the seizure, calling it an unconstitutional aberration that infringes on property rights.

The Matabeleland Forum civic group is one of the groups against the seizure of the farm. It said the farm is wholly owned by black indigenous Zimbabwean professionals. Added the group:

This clearly militates against the government’s thrust of black economic empowerment.  The group views the seizure as an assault on the legacy of late National hero Sidney Malunga. The government recently said it will never dispossess black occupants.

Informal traders plead for Mupedzanhamo reopening

Informal traders plead for Mupedzanhamo reopening. They spent the better part of Monday playing hide and seek with the law as police ordered them to leave the demolished stalls.

“We are aware that we have been operating on illegal points but the City of Harare is to blame for delaying in reopening Mupedzanhamo,” said one of the affected vendor. Vendors who were operating on illegal points in Mbare Monday clashed with municipal and national police demanding the reopening of Mupedzanhamo Market.

“Vending is my only source of income and schools will be opened soon and where will I get money for fees. “Is Mupedzanhamo a car park or a marketplace because they have taken longer than expected that is why we are displaying our wares by its entrance?

“We will not tire to display our goods as long they do not give us legal points and reopen closed marketplace,” she said. A number of vendors continued to display their wares for sale behind patrolling police and municipal officers.

City of Harare demolished some of the illegal structures along roads leading to Mbare Musika and Mupedzanhamo market. Council spokesperson Michael Chideme is on record saying the city was set to enhance enforcement, insisting that the council will continue to assist traders in all suburbs to remove their structures if they fail to do that on their own.

He urged those affected to designated trading sites, which are empty.

David Mandigora family grateful

David Mandigora family grateful. The Mandigora family has expressed their gratitude to everyone who stood by them flowing the death of the football legend David Mandigora.

In an interview with H-Metro Sport, Mercy Tsitsi Mandigora, wife of the deceased said: “I would like to thank everyone who assisted us in any way. The handouts were overwhelming and I cannot thank you enough for what you did to us. It was unfortunate that we lost a gentleman and it will be a terrible lie if l say the nation did not help us when he was still breathing.

“People supported us from the beginning and I assume that sometimes he would feel less pain as he was battling with his leg because of the love he would get from heavenly sent doctors, friends and colleagues.

“I will be forever grateful to Triangle United for funding Yogi’s artificial leg. I hope and pray that people will continue to help those who are in need of assistance the same way they did to Yogi. The love that we saw from the masses should grow and to us it was beyond expectation. It was an unforgettable journey,”

Yogi’s young brother Andrew Mandigora, showered praises to everyone who helped them before and after the death of the former Dynamos star urging Zimbabweans to keep showing such love.

“I would like to thank everyone who made Yogi’s funeral respectable. We have seen stories of sport stars being buried awkwardly. We were humbled with how the nation stood by us. The funeral was emotional and physically challenging but we needed to give David a befitting and resounding farewell.

“I was not physically present at the funeral because I could not exist Australia in good time owing to the imposed travel restrictions actuated by Covid-19. I would also want to extend my utmost gratitude and appreciation to the Dynamos family for sending their representatives to pay their last respect to Yogi and gracing the occasion with their ritual farewell. We felt honoured and privileged,” he said.

Half time: Czech Republic 0-1 England

$

No added time, and England are 45 minutes away from a second-round showdown with the runners-up of Group F. More boos, presumably in reaction to this: Scotland have equalised against Croatia! Well, well. Now then. C’mon! Paul Doyle has all the details.

Kane sends a low, hard curler towards the bottom left. Vaclik sticks out a leg to block. The ball breaks to Sterling, though his back is turned and he doesn’t know. The England fans boo, thinking Sterling has downed tools, but he knows he’s well offside, and the flag goes up.

Walker works his way down the right and wins another England corner. They revive the old queue-up-and-scatter routine showcased at the 2018 World Cup. Celustka is wise to the grift and bangs clear.

A lull. “Anyone else wondering nervously what Germany might do to this England defence?” shudders Richard Hirst. Now Shaw shows up the other end of the park, sent into a little space down the left by Grealish. His low shot-cum-cross nearly squeaks in at the near post, having taken a little deflection en route. Vaclik tips it around the post, just in time.

The Czechs really should be level now. A deep cross from the left. Jankto shapes to scissor home. Shaw bravely stoops to stop him. The ball breaks to Soucek, free on the penalty spot. He tries to steer a first-time shot into the left-hand side of the goal. Pickford wasn’t getting there, but the ball flies wide. What a chance!

Saka works his way down the right to earn an England corner. Phillips swings it in. Coufal heads clear, and seconds later the ball’s back at the feet of Pickford. A smattering of boos.

Second half Awaits

Half-time: Scotland 1-1 Croatia

What a rollicking end to the half that was. Croatia were starting to look comfortable, even threatening to add to the lead given to them by Vlasic’s simple opening goal. But McGregor’s spanking shot from the edge of the box – after a bright Scottish move – has made everything possible again. A draw is no use to either team: it’s all set up for a thrilling, potentially historic second half. Oof!

Croatia need half-time, Scotland are suddenly close to rampant! Livakovic hurries off his line to punch a cross clear. Then Tierney rattles in to Modric, winning the ball and bowling over the midfielder to stop a counter-attack. That’s the stuff!

The goal originated in a snappy move down the right by Armstrong and O’Donnell. Nothing came from the cross but when the ball was turned back in from the other side, Lovren cleared it as far as McGregor, who took a touch and t hen drilled a rasping low shot into the net from 18 yards! That’s Scotland’s first goal of the tournament and it revives their campaign!

Perisic is causing havoc down the left. For his latest trick, he scampers forward and then twists and turns his way inside before cracking a shot over the bar from 15 yards. Juranovic sends a wobbly shot high and wide from 20 yards after a dangerous Croatian attack.

Croatia play their way forward patiently. But their move founders when it reaches the edge of the Scottish box. McKenna wellies the ball clear. But Croatia win it back and resume their possession-play. Ahem. McKenna is booked before even touching the ball. He tried to get to it before Petkovic but missed and caught the striker instead.

Second half awaits

Croatia thump Scotland to reach the last 16

Croatia thump Scotland to reach the last 16. Scotland’s honorable Euro campaign has reached its end. There was nothing hackneyed, cursed or ridiculous about this defeat, they were just left facing the pitiless reality that they were beaten by a better team. Nothing illustrated that point better than Croatia’s wonderful second goal, scored in sumptuous style by Modric, the player Scottish fans hope Billy Gilmour may one day become.

Before that Callum McGregor scored a pearler of his own to give Scotland brief hope. Scotland even missed a couple of decent chances after that before Croatia’s superiority was eventually reflected on the scoreboard. Croatia march on, finishing second in the group. Scotland exit, with their pride intact.

Scotland’s dream of making history by progressing at Euro 2020 came to a sobering end with a heart-breaking defeat by Croatia at Hampden.

With both sides knowing a win would grant passage to the last 16, Nikola Vlacic arrowed the World Cup finalists into an early lead to silence the national stadium in Glasgow.

However, a thundering drive just before half-time from Callum McGregor caused the 12,000 to explode in a cacophony of hope.

But Luka Modric’s sumptuous first-time shot after an hour broke Scotland just after the hour and Ivan Perisic glanced in a third from a corner to record Croatia’s first-ever win over the Scots.

The margin of victory was also enough to earn them second place in the group ahead of the Czech Republic on goals scored, with both those sides advancing to the last 16.

England beat Czech Republic to win Group D

England top Group D! They’ve made it through without conceding a goal, and will welcome the runners-up of Group F to Wembley next Tuesday evening! France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary await.

The Czechs finish third after Croatia’s 3-1 win over Scotland. Raheem Sterling’s second goal of Euro 2020 saw England beat the Czech Republic to win Group D and set up a last-16 tie against France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary at Wembley.

In a performance that developed into a slog after a bright start, Sterling converted at the far post in the 12th minute from Jack Grealish’s cross after fine work from Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

Grealish and Saka were two of the host’s better performers on a night when England were workmanlike and had to do without Mason Mount, self-isolating after coming into close contact with Scotland’s Billy Gilmour after the second group game.

Southgate also had the bonus of Manchester United captain Harry Maguire safely completing 90 minutes in his first game since suffering ankle ligament damage in early May.

Captain Harry Kane is still seeking his first goal of Euro 2020, although he was denied by a first-half save from keeper Tomas Vaclik.

At the other end, Jordan Pickford was rarely threatened, although he did pull off a fine diving save from Tomas Holes in the first half on a night when England got the job done – although a greater test than this now lies ahead.

That will come in the shape of the runner-up in Group F at Wembley on Tuesday, 29 June (17:00 BST). The final Group F games take place on Wednesday, with Germany facing Hungary and Portugal playing France (both 20:00 BST).

RBZ speaks on Foreign Currency no longer legal tender reports. A statement issued by RBZ Governor, Dr John Panonetsa Mangudya, who said the people behind the message sought to hamstring the central bank’s efforts to stabilise and grow the economy.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that foreign currency was no longer legal tender on local transactions.

FALSE AND MALICIOUS ARTICLES BEING CIRCULATED ON SOCIAL MEDIA ABOUT BAN OF USE OF FOREIGN CURRENCY

The Bank has noted with serious concern the continued circulation of false and malicious articles on social media alleging that Zimbabweans will no longer be able to pay for goods and services in foreign currency, particularly one article captioned “Foreign currency no longer legal tender”. These articles and statements are false and should be treated with the contempt they deserve, as there is no policy or law that prohibits the use of foreign currency in Zimbabwe as alleged.

The articles are at the behest of irresponsible, mischievous and malicious people who are always bent on purveying false statements calculated to cause unnecessary anxiety, panic, alarm and despondency within the economy. The statements are also calculated to discredit the Government and the Bank’s progressive efforts and achievements in stabilising and growing the economy.

The Bank wishes to reiterate that the public can pay for goods and services in local currency or foreign currency in accordance with the laws of the country and that they should ignore the malicious rumours being circulated on social media.

Smash and grab thief steal over US$19 000 and an HP laptop from car. An employee of the Organisation for Public Health Interventions and Development (OPHID) had parked the vehicle along Fort Street between 14th and 15th Avenue to attend to a punctured tyre.

A suspected thief got away with a bag containing over US$19 000 and other valuables from a vehicle belonging to a Non-Governmental Organisation in Bulawayo before speeding off in an unregistered car.

The 33-year-old employee, whose name has not been released, was on his way to Bulilima district clinics to deliver the money. He was in the company of two employees from a car hire company from where he had hired a Toyota Hilux, they were travelling in.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the theft that occurred last Thursday at about 11 AM. Said Insp Ncube:

We are investigating a theft case where an unknown person snatched a bag containing US$19 396, HP laptop, laptop charger and several documents all valued at US$21 000 from a vehicle which was parked at a garage situated along Fort Street between 14th and 15th Avenue and sped off in a black Toyota Wish without number plates. Nothing was recovered.

Ncube added that the suspect stole after a member of the trio had briefly opened the rear passenger door to relieve himself. The driver tried to chase after the speeding driver but he could not catch up due to congestion in the city centre.

A report was made at Bulawayo Central Police Station but no arrest has been made so far. Cases of thieves breaking into cars are on the rise countrywide with the police discouraging members of the public from leaving valuables in cars.

Last year, a gold mine employee lost nearly US$50 000 to thieves who broke into his car minutes after he had sold gold to a dealer in Bulawayo.

Drama as Rtd Army general cries in court: My life is in serious danger. Retired Army Major General Samson Sikhulile Nyathi appeared before Harare magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure on a domestic violence matter, where he was accusing his wife, Noleen Nyathi, of always abusing him. Nyathi yesterday wept in court alleging that his life was in danger as his spouse was always abusing him.

He begged Mashavakure not to throw away the domestic violence case, saying that he was living in a zoo. Nyathi said at one time, his wife poured hot cooking oil on him and at one time, assaulted him with a shoe.

Despite the allegations, magistrate Mashavakure removed the wife from remand saying the docket was incomplete as it did not include a warned-and-cautioned statement for the accused.

“Your worship, I am a blind man. My life is in danger because of my spouse. I am living like in a zoo your worship. I have been to police on several occasions, but nothing materialises,” Nyathi said in court.

“If you release her, my life will be in serious danger. I cannot live a peaceful life without her being restrained.” He said he had even approached different organisations for assistance to no avail.

Noleen’s lawyer Job Sikhala said the court had done well by removing her from remand, adding that constitutionally, a trial could not take place without a warned-and-cautioned statement from the accused.

Sikhala said a person could not be charged twice on the same facts. The matter was then removed from remand and will proceed by way of summons.

Just last year on September 11, Cassper released his album Any Minute Now which was in celebration of his son’s birth. This album meant so much more to Cassper than any of his previous albums because it marked the first year he became a father.

He even said this album has the most number of collaborations and those include U.S R&B crooner Anthony Hamilton, Kwaito legend Zola, Samthing Soweto, Langa Mavuso, Tellaman, Youngsta CPT, Busiswa, Nadia Nakai and his homeboys from Mahikeng; Khuli Chana, Tuks, Momolemi, Towdee Mac, DJ Lemonka and the late HHP.

Bulawayo placed on lockdown

Bulawayo placed on lockdown. Cabinet also postponed the reopening of schools by two weeks following a spike in Covid-19 cases being recorded countrywide. Schools were initially scheduled to reopen next Monday for the second term of the year before the latest surge in Covid-19 infections.

Bulawayo has effectively been put under lockdown after Cabinet yesterday approved that three districts that are Covid-19 hotspots be placed under localised lockdown, with security details being deployed to enforce the regulations.

This is the second time Government has deferred the reopening of schools this year. In January, Government postponed the reopening after a spike in infections following the festive season where members of the public let down their guard.

Districts now under localised lockdown include Nkulumane, Emakhandeni and northern suburbs. Suburbs covered by the Nkulumane clinical district include Nkulumane, Pelandaba, Sizinda, Nketa, Emganwini and Barham Green.

Emakhandeni clinical district covers Cowdray Park, Njube, Luveve, Magwegwe suburbs, Pumula suburbs and Emakhandeni. The northern suburbs include Mpopoma, Mzilikazi, Nguboyenja, Makokoba and the city centre.

Complacency has been blamed for the latest surge in new infections and 95 percent of the cases are due to local transmissions.

Speaking during a post Cabinet media briefing yesterday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said Government will determine whether it will be safe to reopen schools at the end of the two weeks.

“In view of the regional and local upsurge of cases, the nation is informed that Cabinet approved that the reopening of schools and other learning institutions be delayed by 14 days. Government will be monitoring the situation and a review would be made after two weeks,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

She said localised lockdowns are being enforced in areas declared Covid-19 hotspots.  “Cabinet further approved the localised lockdown in the following hotspot areas: – in Mashonaland West Karoi; Makonde; Chinhoyi; Mhangura; Chidamwoyo; Magunje; Chirundu; in Bulawayo Nkulumane; Emakhandeni and Northern Surburbs in Mashonaland Central Mount Darwin and in Masvingo, Chiredzi,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

“The nation is informed that there would be a joint security blitz to enforce the recently promulgated Covid-19 prevention and control measures, especially in the designated hot spots. Furthermore, border security and surveillance at ports of entry is being strengthened.”

She said Cabinet has also directed the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) and police to increase surveillance to enforce compliance with Covid-19 regulations for Zupco intercity and intra-urban services.

Minister Mutsvangwa said the country is still on course with its Covid-19 vaccine procurement as more doses will be delivered on Saturday.

“On procurement of Covid-19 vaccines, Cabinet is pleased to report that arrangements are currently in progress to procure 2 million doses of Sinovac vaccines from China. These are expected in the country by end of month. Furthermore, 500 000 doses of vaccines are expected to be delivered this Saturday 26th June, 2021,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

The Minister said Bulawayo’s Renkini Bus Terminus, Hwange Town, tobacco auction floors, Grain Marketing Board employees, border points and Mbare Musika among other areas have been identified as targets for Covid-19 vaccination in the next phase of the blitz programme.

She said Government has also strengthened measures to manage Covid-19 cases at community levels where patients would not necessarily need hospitalisation.

“The following measures are being implemented to lower the case fatality rate; strengthening of critical care in admitting facilities (HDU/ICU); ensuring oxygen availability in admitting centres; ensuring availability of critical care equipment; and cascading critical care training,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

“Furthermore, measures are being put in place to guarantee the availability of essential services through Telemedicine, integrated outreach, and equipping existing treatment centres with monitoring equipment, medications, PPEs. In addition, Cabinet agreed that Home Based Care will be strengthened by accelerating the introduction of the concept of a Virtual Hospital (Home Based Care).”
