Oliver Mtukudzi, Mbeu collabo out, first song since the legend’s death. Titled Better Half, the single was recorded at Pakare Paye Studios in Norton and mastered at Gallo Records in South Africa, a year before Tuku’s death.
AFRO jazz crooner Ashton “Mbeu” Nyahora is on cloud nine ahead of the release of his collaboration, with the late Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, on February 2.
Three years after the national hero’s death, Mbeu’s collaboration with Tuku will be the first project to be released, featuring the icon.
Speaking to H-Metro through his manager Eugene Museredza, Mbeu’s camp could not hide its joy. “We are going to release one of our treasures in the form of a single featuring the late Dr Oliver Mtukudzi, which we did a year before his death.
“The single was recorded a year before Tuku’s death and it was a blessing working with Nzou in his lifetime. “We wanted to shoot the accompanying video of the single together, but he died in 2019 before we could finalise it, which left us heart-broken,” he said.
Museredza said they were set to engage the family on how best they can record the visuals. “With the single definitely coming out on February the 2nd, we are a bit relieved since Mbeu has become the first artist to release something with Tuku, since the legend’s death.
“The major challenge we now face is recording of the visuals that we hope to do very soon. “We will definitely engage the family and see if we can use other clips of the late singer for the video.”
Museredza, who was also mentored by the late Tuku on band management, said they will always appreciate the icon’s wisdom. “Tuku made us who we are today in the world of arts and we will always cherish what he did for us. “He used to give us the platform to express ourselves and we managed to hone our skills under his great tutelage.
“We will always cherish the wisdom we got from Tuku because he was more than a father figure, mentor and pillar to us,” he added.
Mbeu, who fronts The Mhodzi Tribe group, is one of the products to pass through the tutelage of the former Black Spirits leader. Munya Mataruse, Watson Chidzomba Junior and Bryan Kadengu are among artistes who passed through Pakare Paye Arts Centre.
