The country’s power utility ZESA is bracing for a looming rise in electricity requirements by industry, a move that has seen the parastatal focusing on long term projects to sustain household and industrial supplies.
It emerged at the energy symposium in the capital on Thursday (today), the rise in project approvals in key productive sectors is likely to result in an increase in power demand by large scale companies.
The ability by the power utility to balance the act between power generation against limited resources was also under spotlight.
Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) Managing Director Engineer Julian Chinembiri said, on the sidelines of the meeting, a strategy for stable power supplies is therefore being implemented.
“It is something that we are working on and we hope to increase capacity taking into account the rise in demand for power,” Chinembiri said.
The power utility should therefore not lag behind in adapting policies to increase power generation capacity, said Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union president Mr Wonder Chabikwa.
“It is just a matter of time before we can seal all what is needed so that the country can have consistent supplies in the future,” he said.
Some of the issues that were discussed at the meeting include a proposed smart metering system, energy efficiency policies, new legislation on power sector, pricing models and energy investments.
