Team Zimbabwe at the ongoing African Youth Games in Algeria has so far amassed four medals from rowing and qualified for two slots at the forthcoming Youth Olympic Games (YOG) set for October in Argentina.

The African Youth Games are running until July 28 and Zimbabwe has a team of 37 athletes competing in seven disciplines.

Rower Kenneth Raymor scooped gold in the junior men’s single sculls as well as a slot for the YOG in Argentina this October while Loryn Bass picked up a silver medal after finishing second in the junior women’s 2000m single scull also booking a slot for YOG.

The pair of Savannah Henricks and Taurai Madziva were third in the junior women’s 2000m pair event to claim bronze, another possible qualification for YOG.

Zimbabwe has a team of 37 athletes competing in seven disciplines; athletics, archery, equestrian, hockey (boys and girls), judo, rowing and triathlon.

Speaking from Algiers, Algeria Sebastian Garikayi, who is chef d’mission Team Zimbabwe to YOG applauded the great performances being witnessed from all the sport codes by the Zimbabwean athletes.

“They are good sports ambassadors of our country and have won the hearts and support of locals here through the way they carry themselves. The athletes are playing and performing with both passion and pride for our nation. The competitions here are tough and we are progressing well in all of them,” he said.

Meanwhile, the hockey girls won 10-nil against Algeria and now meet South Africa in the semi-final while the boys meet Namibia.

Donnovan Mutariswa finished second in a time of 10.65 seconds in the semi-finals of the 100 metres behind a Nigerian athlete who ran 10.33 seconds.

He is through to the finals of the 100 metres sprint while another female entry is expected to run the 800 m final.

The equestrian competition is also expected to be run this Wednesday.
