ZIFA snubs parliament

ZIFA snubs parliament. The Mathias Tongofa chaired portfolio wrote to Zifa, the Sports Commission, Councils, Ministries responsible for Sports and Local Government to give oral evidence on the state of the sporting facilities in the country.

The communication by CAF that Zimbabwe has no capacity to host international matches has seen government reacting and disbursing funds to fast track renovations. ZIFA have been criticised for snubbing the Portfolio Committee on Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation who had summoned them to parliament over the recent condemnation of local stadia by CAF.

And to check on the progress that has been made, the stakeholders were summoned to the National Assembly yesterday to give oral evidence on the state of the stadia. It was the absence of Zifa – a key stakeholder – that left members of the committee fuming.

Bulawayo City Council – the custodians of Barbourfields Stadium – were also absent despite the stadium carrying the country’s hopes ahead of the 2021 Afcon qualifier against Algeria on March 29.

Members of Parliament for Njube-Lobengula and Vungu, Gift Banda and Omega Sibanda – who both have a history with Zifa – were among those who questioned the absence of Zifa given the significance of the subject. The hearing had to be briefly adjourned as the committee deliberated on whether they continue with the absence or Zifa or order them to come.

Tongofa, who is a legislator for Chivi North, later called for the hearing to continue saying they will take necessary actions against the country football governing body.

He also directed SRC to bring the Felton Kamambo-led association to book. SRC director-general Prince Mupazvirihwo told the committee that he contacted Zifa who said they asked for the hearing to be postponed to a later date.

Tongofa blasted Zifa saying they have exhibited lack of seriousness and no surprise local football is at this stage. He said they have no powers to call for the postponement of a hearing which their superiors – Sports Ministry and SRC – have confirmed their participation.
