Christ Embassy pastor arrested for allowing unvaccinated congregants

Christ Embassy pastor arrested for allowing unvaccinated congregants. A Harare-based Christ Embassy Ministries pastor was arrested on Sunday after police found a gathering of 50 unvaccinated members congregating in violation of COVID-19 regulations.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Monday said the pastor from Harare’s Glen View high-density residential area was fined $2 000 while some of the church members are still assisting police with investigations.

Last week the government said churches could resume in-person services but only for fully vaccinated congregants, who have had both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Congregants are also required to wear masks, observe social distancing and sanitise on entry.

While no limit was placed on the number attending a particular service, the social distance requirements mean that the church leaders will have to limit numbers so that the need is met.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that most traditional churches like the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Reformed Church in Zimbabwe, among others, did not conduct services this past Sunday as most of their members are not vaccinated.

Mnangagwa promotes 3 Chiredzi Headmen to Chiefs

Mnangagwa promotes 3 Chiredzi Headmen to Chiefs. This follows a proclamation he made on 26 June 2021, upgrading three headmen from Chiredzi South, namely Chilonga, Gezani and Mpapa to the position of substantive chiefs. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has increased the number of chiefs in Chiredzi from four to seven.

The development was announced by Chiredzi District Development Coordinator Lovemore Chisema during the ceremonial burial of the late Chief Tshovani at Chizvirizvi Resettlement area in Chiredzi two weeks ago. Speaking to Masvingo Mirror, Chisema said the three headmen were upgraded because they submitted their application to Local governance petitioning that they were once chiefs before the Colonial era so their chieftainship was resuscitated. Said Chisema:

I am pleased to inform you that the President, Cde ED Mnangagwa has in terms of Section 3 (1) subsection 2(a) of Traditional Headman Act Chapter 29(12) approved the establishment of Chilonga, Gezani and Mupapa chieftainships with effect from 26 June 2021.

Chiredzi had four chiefs before this latest development after Mnangagwa resuscitated the Neromwe chieftainship in 2018. Other chiefs are Sengwe, Tshovani and Gudo.

The elevation of the four headmen to chief will have financial constraints on the State purse as the new chiefs’ conditions of work include having vehicles and allowances.

ZANU PF has been accused of using chiefs as “vote banks” in national elections and this happens with just 24 months left to go to the next general elections in 2023.

Fanie Maserumula’s time on #SkeemSaam has come to an end

It appears Fanie Maserumula’s era on Skeem Saam has come to an end. This is after Café Rovuwa was invaded by criminals who are supposedly in the abalone business. They shot up the entire place and shot Fanie and Chef Kgosi and everyone else was left unharmed. However, fans are convinced that there is more than what meets the eye.

Lehasa had warned Fanie after he threatened to leak his family history if he didn’t give him a stake at Care Rovuwa and he took the threat lightly. Knowing Lehasa’s character, he wasn’t going to let one of his employees get 1-up over him without a fight. He was planning something sinister with his uncle and what unfolded last night could be that. Maphosa then went to the hospital he was being cared for at and finished him off by poisoning his drip.

Gift Mokhampanyane

Skeem Saam has not yet confirmed that Fanie is leaving. Still, it is most likely that he could be leaving. Who in the world would survive all of that?
Meikie Maputla has also returned to Turfloop after she was granted bail. She has made it just in time as Thabo’s wedding nears. There have been mixed reactions about her release as others feel that she could be a danger to the community after she shot Mma Ntuli and Zamokhule.
While we’re on the topic of Skeem Saam, one of their stars, Amanda Manku recently turned 30-years-old but decided not to post anything on her birthday. This was the first time she was celebrating her big day without her parents.

This was meant to be posted yesterday, but because I was too excited to finally be out the house, I didn’t post.” She said.

“So 30 years ago, Friday 9th August. My mother was 15 years old at the time, gave birth to a bouncing baby girl, Me! My grandmother named me Dimakatšo (Surprise) because obviously, no one knew that 15-year-old Gladys was expecting.
The star was still grateful for her health as she and her siblings came out of a long battle with Covid-19. Had symptoms were severe.

“I didn’t want to celebrate my birthday this year. “There’s nothing worth celebrating”… However, 2/3 weeks before my birthday, my siblings and I tested positive for Covid 19, we all had different symptoms and some had it easier than others… Almost 30-year-old me had it hard. Was really struggling, so when I finally became Covid free and could leave the house but most importantly could breath, walk around without holding onto anything and my feet weren’t swelling anymore… I realized the importance of celebrating life.” She Posted.

Strive Masiyiwa speaks on Zambian’s for Class transition

Strive Masiyiwa speaks on Zambian’s for Class transition. United Kingdom-based Zimbabwean-born businessman and philanthropist Strive Masiyiwa has described Zambia’s transition as “African class”, saying he will be watching new President Hakainde Hichilema’s policies to decide on possible new investment in the country.

Masiyiwa owns Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Africa’s largest fibre company, which has operations in Zambia and across the continent.

Writing about Zambia’s electoral processes and outcome on Monday, Masiyiwa also commended outgoing Zambian leader Edgar Lungu for conceding defeat. Wrote Masiyiwa: Like most Africans, I had my eyes fixed this last week on following the Zambian elections.

First of all, I would like to extend my congratulations to now President-Elect Hakainde Hichilema, his supporters, and all the people of Zambia. By any electoral precedence, this is a landslide victory rarely seen these days.

I would also like to commend outgoing President Edgar Lungu for the manner in which he conceded the election: As I told a friend in America, it was a bit of ‘African class’.

Hichilema ran on a pro-business platform and had the backing of large corporates operating in the country.

He has pledged to fix Zambia’s debt crisis, negotiate for an IMF bailout and protect jobs, including in the key copper mining sector, which was hit by low copper prices over recent years.

School heads say they are ready for reopening

School heads say they are ready for reopening. The headmasters said this during a recent provincial tour by Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Cain Mathema to assess the state of preparedness of schools to offer face-to-face lessons that were suspended due to the COVID-19 third wave.

School heads in Zaka District, Masvingo Province, have said they are ready for opening schools as they will just need a week or two to finalise preparations before learners come.

Chimedza Primary School school head Johannes Mucheki said they will be doing hot-sitting where pupils will be split between morning and afternoon sessions so as to decongest the school.

He said: We are ready if the President asks us to open the schools. We have supplies of most of the required PPEs that can take us for some time as we mobilise for more and if the government promises to help us with other requirements then we can open the schools.

Mutimwi Primary and Mutimwi High school heads said after managing to reopen following last year’s initial COVID-19 induced lockdown, they were now better equipped for another reopening.

The school heads at schools toured by Mathema said they had necessary literature on COVID-19 displayed at all vantage points at the schools, together with hand-washing facilities at entrance points, as well as sanitisers in all classes.

They also said they have sick bays ready to quarantine any suspected cases of COVID-19 in school premises, which they said would be in contact with the nearest health centres for assistance in cases of emergencies.

RBZ to disburse US$60m tobacco facility

RBZ to disburse US$60m tobacco facility. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) is working on modalities of disbursing a US$60 million tobacco facility this year after the Government decided to start funding production of the crop using local money.

The Tobacco Production Localisation Revolving Fund is meant to support growers during the forthcoming season with a yield potential of 60 million kilogrammes expected from the initial investment.

This will help sustain the auction system, which has almost collapsed as the majority of farmers are now being funded by private contractors. Tobacco is one of the country’s largest foreign currency earners alongside gold and is mostly grown by small-holder farmers.

“It’s work in progress, we are engaging all participating partners,” central bank governor Dr John Mangudya told our sister publication Business Weekly in an interview. Concerns have, however, been raised by industry players over the risk of defaults given lower investment recovery rates by private merchants.

Lower recovery rates are haunting some private tobacco merchants as the “chaotic” marketing of the crop has led to unprecedented levels of side marketing and defaults, they argue.

With more than 65 buying sites for tobacco across the country, the marketing model has created loopholes as regulating the sale of commodities has become more difficult.

Industry players are concerned that poor debt recoveries will result in contractors perceiving a higher level of risk and consequently cut back on inputs. This may result in low yields leading to drop in production.

“The current marketing model where contractors buy directly from farmers makes it difficult to control marketing of tobacco and this has led to unprecedented levels of defaults due to side marketing,” one industry player who spoke on condition of anonymity said.

“Previously, no company would buy tobacco contracted by other companies because it was easy to control the market. The supervision was tight.

“But with the mushrooming of tobacco selling sites, some of the merchants are violating the rules in pursuit of the crop. Instead of chasing away those farmers running away from their obligation elsewhere, some merchants are welcoming, luring them . . . giving them growers numbers. It’s pathetic.”

The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board said while the decentralisation was welcome, there was much piloting. “We need to redefine the decentralisation to ensure transparency,” said TIMB chief executive Mr Gudu.

He said the regulatory board was looking at the Malawian model where the country has decentralised but with no proliferation of buying sites.

Some industry players warned the Government will “not be spared from the marketing chaos” and risked losing money, moreso when history shows very poor recovery rates when it comes to the Government loans.

“The idea is good but without orderly marketing of the crop, the Government stands to lose out,” Carlos Tadya, a research analyst with a local economic think tank said.

He said it would be critical to insist on collateral to secure the loans. But the reason why the majority of farmers are being sponsored by private companies is because they lack that collateral.

Tobacco deliveries for this season have reached 200 million kg, above 178 million last year.

UK Zimbabwean deportees get reprieve from legislators

UK Zimbabwean deportees get reprieve from legislators. Two United Kingdom legislators said though the deportation of criminals is good for the UK, it is the manner in which authorities in the former colonial power have disregarded the plight of the migrants especially in light of COVID-19 that leaves a lot to be desired.

Several Zimbabwean nationals, most of them with criminal records, who were set to be deported from the United Kingdom heaved a sigh of relief after the intervention of legislators to halt the removals.

In email communications made to Zimbabwe Leeds Community (ZLC) executive committee member and PhD candidate Chris Goshomi, Legislator for Tottenham Retired Honorable David Lammy and Hillary James Wedgwood Benn of Leeds said they shared the concerns of Zimbabweans in the UK with regards to the deportations. Wrote Lammy in an email:

I do not oppose the policy of deporting dangerous criminals. However, a robust system is needed to ensure people are not unlawfully removed. This is why the Shadow Immigration Minister and others often raise these matters with the Home Office, as happened ahead of the deportation flight to Zimbabwe on 21 July.

Thanks for your letter which I have read. I share your concerns, as do a number of MPs. Best wishes, Hilary Benn MP.

Goshomi, who petitioned the British government over the deportation said he is overwhelmed by the progress they have made so far to address the plight of fellow Zimbabweans in the UK.

In one of the voicemails released by Goshomi, a detainee Isaac Nyika Kurangwa thanked the ZLC for their efforts in advocating for his release which saw him being reunited with his UK family.

To date, 15 returnees have been received by the Zimbabwean government, as more are expected in the near future.

Drama as Mutare Town Clerk candidates stampede at a traditional healer’s shrine. A Mutare-based traditional healer said he is overwhelmed by the number of people visiting his shrine in a desperate bid to enhance their chances to land the Mutare City Council town clerk’s position.

Forty-three 43 candidates are eyeing the post which fell vacant following the death of Joshua Maligwa who succumbed COVID-19 on 5 January this year.

A famous traditional healer in Mutare, who refused to be named, confirmed the night visits by some of the candidates. The traditional healer told NewsDay: I am doing a lot of work at my shrine. The burdened are being healed, but as for the past two weeks, my shrine was overwhelmed with clients who are seeking to land the Mutare City Council town clerk’s position.

Most of them come at night. I am trying to help them, but the most difficult thing is that only one person is needed for the job. Mutare mayor Blessing Tandi (MDC Alliance) recently disclosed that 43 candidates had applied for the hot seat.

Tandi said the shortlisting of the candidates was expected to be done next month. The municipality’s health director Antony Mutara is currently the acting town clerk.

Highlanders captain Ariel Sibanda quits

Highlanders captain Ariel Sibanda quits. Sibanda announced his decision via his Facebook page on Tuesday morning, saying he would have loved to stay at the club for more years. A massive player exodus is looming at Highlanders after captain Ariel Sibanda’s shocking decision to announce his departure from the club he had served for 13 years.

The goalkeeper’s shock exit comes after it emerged that FIFA statutes allow a player to terminate his contract on just cause if a club goes for more than two months without meeting its salary obligations to the player. Wrote Sibanda: I feel very sad now as I have to leave the club that I love, I would have loved to say goodbye to a fully packed BF but I’m grateful to everyone who loved and supported me during my 13 years with the club. I wish the team a very good season when the league resumes.

Chronicle reported sources saying a number of senior players are contemplating following their captain as they take advantage of Article 14 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, February 2021 version. Article 14 reads:

A contract may be terminated by either party without consequences of any kind (either payment of compensation or imposition of sporting sanctions) where there is just cause.

… The player will be deemed to have a just cause to terminate his contract, provided he has put the debtor club in default in writing and has granted a deadline of at least 15 days for the debtor club to fully comply with its financial obligation(s).

Alternative provisions in contracts existing at the time of this provision coming into force may be considered. Highlanders spokesperson Ronald Moyo when quizzed on the issue regards player salaries, said the club was still actively mobilizing resources to pay all salaries owed to players.

Abused 5-year-old boy taken to safe house

Abused 5-year-old boy taken to safe house. “Police are investigating a case of child abuse in Glendale,” said Ass Comm Nyathi. He said preliminary investigations had shown that the video circulating had no relation to the Glendale incident.

A 5-year-old Glendale boy believed to have been undergoing serious abuse at the hands of her aunt has been taken to a safe house. Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the case is under investigation and the child has been taken to a safe place.

“That video has been circulating on social media for some time and we continue to appeal to members of the public to supply us with information where that woman on the video can be found.

“However, the child has been taken to a safe place awaiting medical examination reports and interviewing the accused person’s neighbours,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.

Shakenman’s aunt Maria Mugwali, 40, dismissed the video circulating together with the whistle blower’s alleged abuse message saying she was not the one and the child had not suffered the alleged disability.

Mugwali, a mother of three and ardent follower of Mugodhi Apostolic Church told H-Metro that Shakeman had been under her custody for the past two years following death of his father.

“To start with, I want to believe that you H-Metro saw that I am not the one on the video of a woman beating the child,” said Mugwali. “The person who circulated the message has a personal vendetta with me and the house owner.

“Information on names and location are true but as a church member at Mugodhi Apostolic church I would not abuse my late brother’s child. “Social welfare officials and police came and discovered that the person on video was not me.

“They took the child to Social Welfare and the case is now being handled by police. “Shakeman is too notorious that at one time he threw his faeces at our neighbour’s house. “I could not let him go unpunished but disciplined him accordingly and not in anger.

“His mother had this only child with my late brother and I do not know where she is living since they had married while she had her own three other children,” said Mugwali.

Mugwali’s neighbours and church members described her as abusive and heartless. “We want to thank social welfare officials for taking the child because the child would spend the whole day without eating,” said one of the neighbours.

“Asi ukamuona mwana wacho akasimba nenyaya yekudya kushamwari saka aizosvika orohwa zvinonzwisa tsitsi. “To our surprise, this woman is a church member and in the same denomination with our local councillor.

“She is very abusive and heartless but if you see her preaching you get shocked and we wonder the spirit she would be inspiring to her audience,” said one of the neighbours. Mugwali is a caretaker of Honourable Remigio Matangira’s house.

Hon Matangira told H-Metro that he was not aware of the abuse case and noone ever approached him about the matter.

“That house under construction has no other tenants besides Mugwali family who are not paying rentals since they are just looking after it,” said Hon Matangira. “I do not know if the case of abuse is true or false since I do not stay there. “None of the residents ever approached me about the abuse case although I have been visiting the place for the past month.

“All the developments done there were carried within a month after one of my daughters living abroad sent money for the construction. “I learnt of the abuse through social media and was quick dismiss it since the woman on the circulating video is totally different from her.

“How the whistle blower decided to mention the owner of house without informing me remains a big question considering that I am a politician and law maker. “I suspect that there is someone behind this who after assassinating my character,” said Hon Matangira.

Marange men lure and marry young girls using goodies, biscuits and zapnaks. Kubaya says many other girl brides had suffered the same sad fate, such that in her Johane Marange apostolic sect community, it is not something out of the ordinary.

At 47, Norest Kubaya (not her real name, she requested to use another name because her husband did not grant her permission to speak), who was married at the age of 12, has lost 10 children out of 14 births.

She believes her children died at a tender age because they did not get adequate healthcare as infants, although she was lucky to survive unlike many other child brides.

Kubaya shared her story following the death of 14-year-old Memory Machaya during labour in Marange on 15 July 2021

“I was in Grade Five when I eloped for my marriage. I must admit that its actually me who wanted to get married. My father was against it. He feared for my well-being since I was still too young to be married. Being a child, I was lured into the marriage by the prospects of a better life. My father wept when he heard I was preg_nant the following year,” Kubaya said

She eloped in 1987, becoming the seventh bride. Her husband married four other minor wives after her. “The government was not as strict on child marriages soon after Independence. It was not such a big issue then, as it is now, so no one saw a problem with it,” Kubaya said.

Her husband sired 64 children from his 11 wives. Kubaya said losing her children was traumatic. She revealed how after the death of every child she would go back to her family for emotional support.

“After a child’s death, you go back to your parents for a few months as part of consoling. When I returned to him, it was my duty to conceive as part of replacing the deceased child. This is how I lost several of my children,” she explained in a deep and sorrowful voice

She said the majority of women from the apostolic sect give birth at different shrines across the country.

“There are trained midwives at the shrine but, personally, I was attended to by my mother, who is also a midwife. Several young women have died while giving birth because of complications that needed operations and may lose a lot of blood. The scenarios differ,” she added.

“There will never be official statistics on how many young women have passed on during birth at the shrines. Burials are done secretly by few family members. The doctrine is that we must not reveal much to outsiders. I lost 10 of my children at different ages, the oldest being seven years. It was due to different illness, but I never went to hospital to get medication for them. We accepted that it was natural for them to die. Even some of the newly married still believe this,” she revealed.

Kubaya said although women are not allowed to speak to the media, the death of Machaya “is so heartrending” that it must not be swept under the carpet. “Women are gagged from speaking to the media. The world must know and understand the challenges faced by young girls married in our church,” she added.

Entangled into marriages

She said many young girls are lured into marriages by some uncaring and selfish men. With the benefit of hindsight, she now sees why her father was against her getting married early.

“I regret how I ended up in this polygamous affair when I was still young to start off a family. There is no limit to how many wives a man could marry. The marriage is not rosy. Majority of these young girls are blindfolded by lustful men taking advantage of the minors,” she said.

“If the truth was ever to be told, men in our sect deceive young girls. They lure them into marriage by providing some goodies. The majority of these young girls, if they were given choices, they could never get married early. Church members accept the abnormal as normal. Many parents are against early marriages and I am one of the elder women who teach the young girls against early marriages, but the young girls don’t listen. Whenever they get goodies, including biscuits, zapnaks (snacks) among others, they can easily be married at a tender age,” she said.

Kubaya said some girls who managed to further their education snubbed early marriages. “Few of those girls who have been to school know and understand their rights and cannot be taken advantage of by men,’’ she revealed.

Defying Taguta

She however revealed that most of the men are defying Noah Taguta, the sect leader, who is against early marriage. “Some Johanne Marange sect men are worst culprits on child marriages as our leader Noah Taguta has on several occasions warned that he will never defend anyone who abuses young girls.

He even said anyone arrested over child marriage must face the wrath of the law and be jailed. He has said he will expel and excommunicate those who are arrested for abusing the girl child through forced marriage.

Some men are criminals who must be arrested for abusing the young girls. It is against the church doctrine and culprits must not take advantage when government respect our leader,” she added.

Shamawari YeMwanasikana, a girl child empowerment organisation in Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East and Manicaland provinces, has been pushing for community-based campaigns to end child marriage through public engagement.

“We have also been engaging religious and traditional leaders to curb child marriages. We also engage men and boys through forums that play a pivotal role in ensuring women and children’s rights are upheld in society,” explained Louis Tatswareyi, the communications coordinator.

The African Union’s goodwill ambassador to end child marriage, Nyaradzai Gumbodzvanda, said the late Machaya’s death is an important issue in looking at girl child’s rights.

This sad news is the most important frontier for the whole country in rooting out the practice as a cultural or religious norm that forced the majority of underage girls falling prey to early marriages,” Gumbodzvanda said.

The United Nations in Zimbabwe condemned the s.e.xual violation of young girls following Machaya’s death.

“UN in Zimbabwe notes with deep concern and condemns strongly the surrounding circumstances leading to the untimely death of 14-year-old Memory Machaya. Sadly, disturbing reports of the sexual violation of under-age girls, including early forced child marriages, continue to surface and indeed this is another sad case,” the UN said in a statement.

The current trend of unresolved cases of violence against women and girls in Zimbabwe, including marriages of minors cannot continue with impunity. All forms of violence and early forced marriages severely affect the mental and physical health of girls and are a violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child which Zimbabwe is a signatory,” the UN statement read.

Warriors coach Loga: I really don’t care. Zimbabwe are seeded in Port 3 and are guaranteed of facing African champions Algeria, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco or hosts Cameroon.

Warriors head coach Zdravko Logarusic says he “does not care” about the opponents they are going to be handed in today’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals draw to be held in Cameroon.

The Warriors are also certain of getting any opponent among Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea who are in Port 2. But Speaking to H-Metro on Monday ahead of the draw, the Croat said he is not worried. Said Loga:

I really do not care. I don’t care who is our group, is it from Port 1, 2 and 4. We know what we have to do, we know our mission. For starters, lets pass the group stage and see how it goes.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has considered the August FIFA rankings – the last rating released before the date of the draw – in the seeding process.

Logarusic asserted that inasmuch as the Warriors respect the “big names”, they should not show too much respect to their opponents but show them who they really are; “Warriors”.

The AFCON finals were initially scheduled to be held in January 2021 but were deferred to between 9 January to 6 February 2022 due to the coronavirus crisis.

Churches cry foul

Churches cry foul. CHURCH and youth have expressed concerns over young people losing their cultural values due to the new rising borrowed cultures they copy through the use of new technology.

Minister of Gospel and Youth Director at Restoration Centre Assembly International Bulawayo Obey Kacherl said youths should not forget where they come from even though they are adopting new popular culture.

“I strongly advise the youth of today to bank on the wisdom of the elders enveloped in our culture, values and norms. The wisdom of the young is in the grey hair, and the strength of the old is in the joints of the young. We can be wiser if we draw much wisdom on the foundation of those who lived before us,” Karchel said.

“The 21st century has created a global village through social media. How we talk, dress, walk has lately been contributed by what we see on social media yet there are no real life situations in that global culture. We only see what they portray, but the backbone of whatever is portrayed is never clarified.”

Karchel said he does not want to dismiss the fact that even though now most youth have lost their cultural values, new technology has in some point helped for easy communication in the country.

“The 21st century on the brighter side has made communication easier and making money easier but has not done much on identity and real life character building. I advise the youth to bank on our culture to have a taste of reality, and draw wisdom to become better people in both identifying ourselves and building ourselves into become respectable individuals,” he said.

A youth, Ntobeko Magayo concurred saying new technology has helped people especially students nowadays to get immediate feedback as compared to long ago.

“In The 20th century Education was more focused on an individual learner with an occasional collaborative Approach. Nowadays, Educators are more focused on the group as a whole. New Developments in technology and a better understanding of the educational process in combination with some federal and State Reforms have shifted the focus to be almost exclusively collaborative. Today students actually use technology such as iPads, personal computers, and data phones to extend learning beyond the classroom and assessment is very proactive,” Magayo said.

“Educators incorporate assessment into learning to provide immediate feedback so they may adjust the instruction to the needs of students based on moral ethical approaches. Multiple sources Contribute to the development of ethics and rules.”

Natasha Sibanda said that new technology has done nothing but destroyed the cultural values of most youths through several immoral activities.

“Culture is what makes us as people. It defines who we are, where we are from and our background, but unfortunately things have changed due to technology. Our culture has also been affected by this, we no longer dress in a way we should dress as Africans. Our parents are no longer being respected. We now kiss, hold each other and even feel each other in public in the name of dating of which our elders never did, that they’d honor their parents,” Sibanda said.

Sibanda said long back people used to respect their elders but all that has been lost due to the adaptation to borrowed culture.

“Long back there was a culture of greeting an elderly person when you met him or her on the road but to us we only do that to our parents only or even those people we know, we no longer care what happens to our elderly people. For instance You see an elderly person carrying heavy things and we just pass without even helping them out but long back young people would help the old,”she said.

“In the name of fashion we go out there naked wearing miniskirts, mini dresses and bum shorts. We want our bodies to be exposed, of which it isn’t part of our culture, the Bible says our bodies are a temple of God but our bodies are now something else we want to show people our nakedness. Men now put earrings on ears and even noses. They now wear trousers in a way that doesn’t show ubuntu/hunhu but that wasn’t witnessed long back. African culture has been destroyed and now we live the European way.”

Radio Discussion leader Lindani Ndlovu said there are other countries who use the new technology but they have not done away with their cultural values.

“Culture has changed a bit because long back there were no TV’s, phones to mention but just a few. Technology was meant to upgrade our knowledge; it never gave us a room, for us to be disobedient as young people. It wasn’t created to destroy our culture but in other countries like Botswana they still value their culture,” she said.

Men rumoured to be dating Thuli Phongolo

Actress Thuli Phongolo is one of the hottest faces (and bodies) in the game. That is one of the main reasons that she has erroneously been linked to so many famous men.

Over the years, rumours have flown about Phongolo dating everyone from Eric Macheru to Duduzane Zuma.

This despite the fact that Phongolo has never officially been linked to anyone.

Onscreen, however, she has played the romantic interest to characters such as Jackson Bogatsu (Shona Ferguson) from Rockville, Thabang Manaka (Warren Masemola) from The Republic and Smanga Moroka (Moopi Mothibeli) from Generations: The Legacy.

While we may have no idea what that list looks like in her real life, we take a look at all the men that fans have assumed Phongolo is dating.

Eric Macheru
According to ZAlebs, Phongolo – who starred in Generations: The Legacy at the time – was spotted with Skeem Saam’s Eric Macheru wearing matching T-shirts at an event back in 2017.

The rumours quickly died down but not before gaining some serious traction online.

Bongani Murdah
Her link to Black Motion’s Bongani Mohosana has been the most believable thus far, after the pair’s photos from a safari getaway were compared a few months after her rumoured links to Macheru.

Neither party ever confirmed nor denied the romance and

Mohosana has since started dating DJ Zinhle.

Raphael Griffiths

Imbewu: The Seed actor Raphael Griffiths is another man that

Phongolo is rumoured to have dated. According to Drum Magazine, she and Griffiths had an on-again, off-again romance plagued by drama.

Duduzane Zuma
The actress was linked to presidential hopeful Zuma sometime last year after she posted a video featuring the local smash hit Imali Eningi by Big Zulu featuring Intaba Yase Dubai.

Zuma most famously trended around the same time for sharing a video of himself walking to the same song.

They both denied the rumours.

Black Coffee
It is unclear where the rumour that Phongolo is dating Black Coffee came from but it gained traction in 2018.

These particular rumours were not addressed by either party.

Master KG
Phongolo seems to have grown tired of keeping quiet about these rumours regarding her dating life as she recently took to Twitter to shut down rumours that she was dating Master KG.

Social media users accused the actress of being “shady” by asking people to “respect her” after assuming that her choice of words was a slight against Master KG. The Jerusalema hitmaker also addressed this, saying that there was nothing wrong with how Phongolo chose to phrase her denial.

She also addressed rumours that Bongani had dumped her for DJ Zinhle.

Phongolo keeps her public persona all about the business so we highly doubt that we’ll ever find out who has her heart. However, one thing remains true; fans are watching her love life closely.

Wrongly fired Masvingo councillor to bounce back

Wrongly fired Masvingo councillor to bounce back. The party claims that they are now expecting conclusion on the part of government so that recalled Masvingo Urban ward 3 Councilor, Tarusenga Vhembo fully resumes duty.

The Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T has reportedly finalized the comeback Masvingo Urban Ward 3 Councilor Tarusenga Vembo who was fired by mistake last year when the party purged four councilors.

MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora told TellZim News that Vhembo will soon be back at the townhouse as they were waiting for the final processes being done by the Ministry of Local Government and National Housing.

“He was reinstated and we are just waiting for the documents. Party spokesperson Doctor Tarisai Mavetera is following up on the issue with the Ministry of Local Government since we wrote to them a long time ago,” said Mwonzora.

Efforts to get a comment from Dr. Mavetera were futile as he did not respond to messages sent to his mobile phone and he also did not pick calls.

Before his ascendency to be the party’s president, Mwonzora had fired ward 3 Councilor Tarusenga Vhembo together with three others for allegedly not representing the party’s interests.

Vhembo, Godfrey Kurauone (ward 4), Daniel Mberikunashe (ward 5) and Richard Musekiwa (ward 7) were controversially recalled by Mwonzora the then MDC-T secretary-general in November last year.

Mwonzora last week reportedly fired three councillors in Kwekwe including the Mayor, Angeline Kasipo, deputy mayor Melody Chingarande and four others in Chipinge over allegations of aligning with MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.

Vhembo who has been eager to return to his post continues to wait for communication since December last year when Mwonzora promised to reinstate him.

Nelson Chamisa: 2023 is my turn

Nelson Chamisa: 2023 is my turn. Hichilema ended Lungu’s increasingly autocratic six-year reign with 2 810 757 votes to the outgoing leader’s 1 814 201 votes. Lungu conceded defeat.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa yesterday said he was smelling the “sweet scent of victory” for his party in the 2023 elections inspired by Zambia opposition chief Hakainde Hichilema’s win over the repressive Edgar Lungu.

Chamisa yesterday told NewsDay that he was confident that the same electoral feat could be accomplished by his party in Zimbabwe, adding that the Zambian situation had given him hope that victory was possible even

“Africa must have a new record of having credible elections, where blood is not shed on the basis of contestation. Zambian elections are a positive indicator of a new Africa and smooth transitions and institutions strong enough to bring change. Gone are the days where big men entered a new dispensation of ideas.

“What we are seeing now is a new federation of democracy, citizen participation in defining the destiny of nations. It started in Malawi and swept into Zambia and now we can smell the sweet scent here in Zimbabwe. It is coming,” Chamisa said.

Soon after the Zambian election results were announced, the MDC Alliance secretary for international affairs, Gladys Hlatywayo issued a statement saying Hichilema’s resounding victory by more than one million votes was a triumph for democracy in light of the growing authoritarian consolidation in countries such as Zimbabwe and eSwatini.

“The UPND (United Party for National Development) is our sister party and we have exchanged notes over the years to further the cause of democracy and good governance in our respective nations,” read the MDC Alliance statement.

But political analysts said it was wrong to compare Zambia and Zimbabwe as the two countries were operating under different political systems, with different electoral bodies, a different military set up and a different judicial system.

“There is utterly no connection between the Zambian and Zimbabwean political situation. It is just euphoria. Zimbabwe has complex electoral challenges which are not being encountered in Zambia,” analyst Alexander Rusero said.

Rusero said Hichilema was a successful business tycoon who had money to fund his own political party, unlike the opposition in Zimbabwe which was broke and relied on external funding.

“Unlike the UPND which has endured despite losing elections six times, the opposition in Zimbabwe has been characterised by chain splits, and there is no perseverance to unite. For the first time since the formation of the vibrant opposition MDC party in 1999, we are going into an election in 2023 with a heavily fractured opposition party. This puts them at a disadvantage in confronting Zanu-PF,” Rusero said.

He said unlike Lungu in Zambia, Zanu-PF was not a party willing to transfer power smoothly.

“In Zambia, the army demonstrated that it could adhere to its constitutional mandate of serving the people and performing the security duties impartially without aligning itself to any political party. In Zimbabwe, it is difficult to distinguish between an army officer and a politician. For us to be like Zambia, we need mechanisms, and a political infrastructure to enhance smooth transfer of power,” he said.

Analyst Rashweat Mukundu said: “The inspiration from Zambia is that change is possible and sometimes under difficult circumstances. What made change possible in Zambia is also the independence of State institutions, including the Electoral Commission of Zambia and the Judiciary, which is something we don’t have in Zimbabwe.”

Mukundu said apart from the independence of State institutions, Zimbabwean citizens should register to vote in their numbers as manipulation was easier during voter apathy.

Human Rights Watch southern Africa director Dewa Mavhinga said: “Zambia’s democracy is more mature than Zimbabwe’s. Smooth transition has never happened in Zimbabwe where the military is deeply entrenched in electoral and political affairs and is a barrier to credible, free and fair elections. The Zambian security forces are non-partisan compared to their politicised Zimbabwean counterparts.”

Mavhinga said if the opposition wanted to win, it should ensure full deployment of polling agents throughout the country. “Hichilema’s party had polling agents in 99% of the polling stations to closely observe and prevent any rigging. Zambia had a huge voter turnout at over 70%, with many of them being youths,” Mavhinga said.

Opposition National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader Lovemore Madhuku described the Zambian elections as “a deepening of democracy in Sadc and in Africa, where the majority of voters freely voted against an incumbent and that verdict is respected”.

“Secondly, losing candidates have not only conceded defeat, but have gone further to urge unity and progress. Thirdly, the new Zambian President (Hichilema) was a long-standing opposition leader who had contested in previous elections without success, but persisted until his day came.”

Madhuku said Hichilema’s party did not start as the biggest opposition, but through successive elections it grew to produce a President and a government. He said the NCA was keenly studying the developments with encouragement and enthusiasm.

“We have to learn the correct lessons from Zambia not the misdirected view that an opposition victory in Zambia automatically translates to the victory of the opposition everywhere,” he said.

Another analyst Vivid Gwede said the Zambian election should set a precedent in the Sadc region that there should be smooth transfer of power.

“However, a democratic transition and consolidation in Zimbabwe can only be possible if key State institutions respect the Constitution and embrace, rather than criminalise democratic contestation,” Gwede said, adding that Zimbabwean citizens were yearning for change.

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba took to Twitter where he claimed that Lungu government’s huge external debt had influenced his ouster.

“The fatal chink in the armour of former President Lungu was borrowing heavily to finance infrastructure. As a result, Zambia’s debt moved from US$3 billion when he took over to the present US$18 billion which he now leaves on the desk. Zambia defaulted on her debt payment, giving IMF (International Monetary Fund) excuse to withdraw balance of payments support. Once that happened, former President Lungu was walking on a limp electorally,”Charamba tweeted.

He said Zambia’s debt trap enabled intrusive influence on the body-politic. Meanwhile, Zimbabwean business tycoon Strive Masiyiwa toasted the smooth transfer of power in Zambia.

“By any electoral precedent, this is a landslide victory rarely seen these days. I would also like to commend outgoing President Edgar Lungu for the manner in which he conceded the election: As I told a friend in America, it was a bit of African class,” Masiyiwa said.
