Minister of State Security Owen Ncube pulls out of ZANU PF Midlands race

Minister of State Security Owen Ncube pulls out of ZANU PF Midlands race. State Security Minister Owen “Mudha” Ncube had earlier indicated his intention to challenge the incumbent, Daniel Mackenzie Ncube but he is now supporting former national youth league deputy secretary member Edson Chiherenge Chakanyuka for the post.

Ncube has reportedly pulled out of the race for the ZANU PF Midlands provincial chairmanship. ZANU PF Midlands provincial structures are reportedly split along factional lines, with one faction behind Local Government minister July Moyo, while the other faction has backs minister in the President’s office Joram Gumbo.

Mudha belongs to the July Moyo camp while Mackenzi-Ncube belongs to Gumbo’s faction, according to insiders. A source told NewZimbabwe.com: The tussles must be understood in their proper context. We are hearing that Cde Chiherenge is going to run for the provincial post to replace Mackenzie.

However, it must be known that Mackenzie himself is not a pushover. Mackenzie is well respected within the provincial party structures. Even the president has high regard and trust for Cde Mackenzie.

The issue is not about Cde Chiherenge assuming the chairman post, it is about minister Moyo controlling the province. He needs someone he can trust to do his bidding once elected provincial chairperson. Their view then is that Chiherenge is a perfect man for the job and this is why Mudha has had to drop out.

Last month Moyo stirred up a hornet’s nest after he met with perceived faction ring leaders Mudha, Chiherenge and Vongai Mupereri among others at his farm outside Kwekwe where they reportedly hatched a plan to wrest control of the province.

The meeting prompted Mackenzie-Ncube to issue a statement calling for unity in the party while castigating tribalism and individualism.

Riot Police called as students cause chaos at Mashoko High School

Riot Police called as students cause chaos at Mashoko High. According to The Mirror, the irate pupils destroyed windowpanes at the classrooms and uprooted carrots from Mbwirire’s garden.

Pupils at Mashoko Mission High School Bikita District, Masvingo Province, went berserk on Thursday morning and destroyed property including the head, Trynos Mbwirire’s vehicle, prompting the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to deploy the Riot Unit to the school.

Masvingo Acting Provincial Education Director (PED) Shylatte Mhike confirmed the disturbances but said she was yet to get a full briefing. The pupils had several grievances, among them the school’s failure to supply electricity for the past seven days and the unavailability of running water for several weeks.

Furthermore, staff turnover is said to be high and the head is rarely at the school amid allegations that he will be attending political meetings. The demonstrations started off at the classrooms at around 9 AM and only stopped after the intervention of riot police around lunchtime.

Masvingo police spokesperson Kudakwashe Dhewa said he was not aware of the matter while efforts by The Mirror to get a comment from Mbwirire were futile as his mobile phone was switched off.

A parent who spoke to The Mirror said the unavailability of running water and electricity at the school was of concern. The parent said: The school has been without electricity for the past six days. We have a backup generator but the administration is saying that there is no fuel whereas O and A level students are writing their ZIMSEC examinations soon.

The school has also been running without tap water for several weeks because there is no fuel to draw water from a nearby dam and from the Mashoko Mission Hospital borehole.

Drama in MDC-T party as Thokozani Khupe’s former bodyguard assaulted by Mwonzora Loyalists

Drama in MDC-T party as Thokozani Khupe’s former bodyguard assaulted by Mwonzora Loyalists. Kudzanai Mashumba was manhandled by MDC-T youth leader, Yvonne Musarurwa, and several others at the media centre in Harare during a press conference where he intended to expose what he alleges is mismanagement of funds by Mwonzora.

Thokozani Khupe’s former bodyguard was on Thursday beaten up by some youths belonging to the party led by Douglas Mwonzora when he tried to speak about alleged abuse of funds by the president of the MDC-T formation.

Less than a minute into his prepared statement, Mashumba was heckled and beaten up in front of reporters. Musarurwa and the other assailants claimed that he was no longer a member of the party and therefore he had no right to talk to the press about anything related to the MDC-T.

Mwonzora is accused of misappropriating thousands of dollars belonging to the MDC-T before the party held an Extraordinary Congress last year, allegations he has strenuously denied.

The party’s information and publicity secretary, Witness Dube, claims that Mashumba is acting on behalf of the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa. Said, Dube: Mashumba and all these people making these false claims have been sent by the MDC Alliance.

They want to denigrate the image of our president as we are preparing for a congress to choose the new leadership. It’s nothing new as far as we are concerned because there are some like him who have made similar allegations.

We are not concerned at all about this because these are people who are looking for fame. Khupe was Zimbabwe’s Deputy Prime Minister during the GNU era (2009 – 2013) and was designated acting party president by the Supreme Court in 2020 following founding party president Morgan Tsvangirai’s death in 2018.

She was among several other candidates who were beaten to the presidency by Mwonzora in a violent Extraordinary Congress held last year.

Drama man digs up mother’s grave, claims she was buried alive. Moses Gumbo (32), from Sosonye Jingatira Village under Chief Murove in Mwenezi was found digging his mother’s grave recently. He told his captors that his mother Miriam Magwegwe was appearing to him in his sleep and telling him that she was buried alive.

A Mwenezi man has been arrested after he dug up his mother’s grave claiming that she was buried alive. Gumbo said that his mother also instructed him to exhume her.

The mother died a few months back. He appeared before Mwenezi Resident Magistrate Honesty Musiiwa on Friday last week facing a charge of violating graves.

Prosecutor Leyton Katsidzira told the court that on 3 October 2021, Gumbo proceeded to Magwegwe’s grave and dug it out to a depth of 1.4m. Villagers who saw him reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.

The court ordered him to be examined by two doctors as it is suspected that the accused is mentally challenged.

Thigh vendors urged to get vaccinated

Thigh vendors urged to get vaccinated. Speaking in an interview with NewZimbabwe.com, S.e.xual Rights Centre (SRC) Executive Director Musa Sibindi said sex workers should prioritise their health because s.e.x involves physical contact.

S.e.x workers have been urged to get vaccinated against the coronavirus as the nature of their profession makes it impossible to observe physical distancing protocols thereby putting them at risk of contracting the deadly virus.

She said: Actually, for s.e.x workers, the key message is that the very nature of the work they do as s.e.x workers is a contact type of activity.

So, there is no way they will actually engage with their clients wearing masks and can constantly be sanitizing and social distancing. With that kind of work, observance of COVID-19 prevention protocols becomes a challenge. So, it is incumbent upon them to actually to take the responsibility of their health and get vaccinated.

I know the major challenge then would how they can be fully empowered to negotiate for their safety with certain clients because even the very places they operate from like bars, the kind of social activities happening there you find people let down their guard in terms of even masking and sanitizing.

Sibindi also urged all s.e.xually active citizens to be vaccinated, saying they are also vulnerable to the disease. She said:

So at least, we are saying s.e.x workers and all of us as citizens should get vaccinated because I believe s.e.x is not just happening among sex workers only but all of us adults are consenting to s.e.xual activities. We need to take responsibility and make sure that we get vaccinated.

Another teacher in court for beating a 6-year-old student. Virginia Nevanji (48), was not asked to plead when she appeared before Harare magistrate Tafadzwa Miti who released her on free bail and ordered her to return to court on 25 November. The trial couldn’t commence because there was an outstanding probation officer’s report required during the trial.

A teacher at Courtney Selous Primary School in Greendale, Harare, appeared before a magistrate on Wednesday to answer to ill-treatment of children charges after she reportedly assaulted a six-year-old pupil using a cooking stick.

Nevanji was ordered not to interfere with State witnesses. Allegations are that on 13 October, at around 10 AM, the complainant was in a Shona lesson but did not realise that his teacher had moved to the English lesson of the day so he continued writing his Shona exercise.

Nevanji saw the complainant writing Shona and went to his desk and started assaulting him with a cooking stick several times on his back. The matter came to light the next morning when the complainant’s mother was bathing him and she saw some bruises on the complainant’s back.

The mother asked the boy what had happened and he told her what had transpired and they made a police report. The complainant was medically examined and a medical affidavit will be produced during trial.

In a related development, Talent Chingwaru (39), a teacher at Harare Einstein Tuition Centre, was ordered to perform 630 hours of unpaid work at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals after he assaulted a Lower Sixth student.

Chingwaru was initially jailed for 36 months but 18 months were set aside for five years on condition of good behaviour.  The remaining months were commuted to 630 hours of community service.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa Commissions Eureka Gold Mine

President Emmerson Mnangagwa Commissions Eureka Gold Mine. The Padenga Holdings-owned company, which employed over 400 workers at its peak, producing about 1.5 tonnes of gold per annum, had been idle for the past 15 years. President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday officially reopened Eureka Gold Mine, Guruve’s biggest gold mine.

Commissioning the mine, Mnangagwa said his government’s thrust was to partner investors and reopen all mines that are lying idle as it pins hopes on natural resources to rebuild the economy. He said:

My administration remains available to dialogue with all investors to ensure a consistent and predictable policy and ease of doing business environment. I, therefore, re-assure Eureka Mine and other investors throughout other sectors of the economy that my Government is a listening Government.

Furthermore, the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency is capacitated to give requisite impetus to investments in the mining sector and the economy as a whole.

Mnangagwa also addressed a rally after the event where he assured villagers that the resuscitated mine would not only provide employment for them but build infrastructure. He took the opportunity to castigate opposition parties for “inviting” sanctions which he said had caused untold suffering on villagers. Said Mnangagwa:

We should all wish for a good country with good leaders, not those that beg for sanctions. We have gone more than 20 years with targeted sanctions called for by the opposition.

We know they are among us in the country, but we should just ignore them and let life continue.

It is also unfortunate that in SADC, we are the only country that was not given funds to cater for COVID-19 pandemic vaccines, but thank God, to date, we have more than five million people who were vaccinated and fewer COVID-19 patients.

As of 21 October 2021, Zimbabwe had fully vaccinated 2 517 653 people against a target of 10 million required to reach herd immunity.

MPs to fly to Victoria Falls for pre-budget seminar. Elephant Hills Hotel offers luxury rooms at a cost of US$160 per person, executive suites US$485, deluxe suites US$550, while the Presidential suite cost US$690. The development was announced by the Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda recently.

Members of Parliament will spend about four days staying at the lavish 4-star Elephant Hills Hotel in Victoria Falls for the pre-budget seminar. He said: I wish to inform the House that the Pre-Budget Seminar on the 2022 National Budget will be held from 22nd to 26th October 2021 at the Elephant Hills Hotel in Victoria Falls.

Honourable Members who have not yet confirmed their attendance with the Public Relations Department must do so immediately. The information circular on the logistical arrangements for the Seminar will be shared by email to all Honourable Members.

Honourable Members from Bulawayo, Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Midlands and Masvingo provinces will drive to Victoria Falls while those from Harare, Manicaland, Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central Provinces will fly.

A charter flight has been arranged for those that are flying and it departs from Harare on 22nd October 2021 at 0900 hours and arrives in Victoria Falls at 1000 hours.

President Biden says US will defend Taiwan if China attacks

President Biden says US will defend Taiwan if China attacks. Biden’s comments have been viewed as signifying the US’s departure from its longstanding policy of “strategic ambiguity”.  United States of America President Joe Biden has said the United States would come to Taiwan’s defence if the island were attacked by China.

Asked in a CNN town hall about defending Taiwan, whose government has been under mounting military and political pressure from Beijing, which claims the island as its own, Biden said, “Yes, we have a commitment to that.”

The US has for years maintained a policy of “strategic ambiguity” under which it provides key military support to Taiwan. America does not explicitly promise to come to Taiwan’s aid in the event of a Chinese attack. The White House later told reporters that US policy on Taiwan had “not changed”. A spokesperson said:

The US defence relationship with Taiwan is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act. We will uphold our commitment under the Act, we will continue to support Taiwan’s self-defence, and we will continue to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo.

In August, a Biden administration official said US policy on Taiwan had not changed after the president appeared to suggest the United States would defend the island if it were attacked. Earlier this month, President Biden appeared to suggest there was an “agreement” between China and the US over Taiwan.

Horror man beats wife to coma for denying him s.e.x. While a woman fights for her life in the intensive care unit, her family is horrified the man they allege almost killed her is walking free. The suspect was released on bail, which has infuriated the family.

The 28-year-old from Thabaleshoba Village outside Mokopane, Limpopo, was beaten to a pulp and left for dead, n@ked on the street on 21 September, allegedly by her boyfriend. She was beaten with a rock, allegedly after she denied her boyfriend s.e.x because he was drunk. He allegedly started assaulting her in their house, and continued outside after she fled through a window.

Her sister (37) said she feared the suspect would go to the hospital to finish her off. “She could be on her deathbed, but the suspect is already roaming the streets. We plead with the justice system to send him back to jail,” she said.

A witness said she tried to calm the situation but ended up watching helplessly as the suspect allegedly became increasingly violent. “He kept beating her until she fell to the ground on the road. Then he ran away. I’m frustrated as he might come back for me,” she said.

NPA spokeswoman Mashudu Malabi-Dzangi said the suspect was released on bail and would appear in court on 3 November. “The suspect is also prohibited from committing further offences or going to the village where the complainant resides.

“He was given bail on his second court appearance last week. The investigative officer was requested to get his profile so we can revoke bail, should it be found at a later stage that he has other cases,” Malabi-Dzangi said.

Man B0NKS lover in the presence of his wife. The incident happened on Tuesday last week and it has forced Fadzai Chikanga to move out of her matrimonial home and go back to her relatives in Runyararo West,

A man from Rujeko C in Masvingo allegedly bedded his 22-year-old girlfriend who is doing Chemical Engineering at Masvingo Poly in the presence of his wife of three years. The Mirror has confirmed.

Desire Manombe (26), a security guard is now staying with pr_egnant Rutendo Chaziva after the departure of Chikanga. Manombe told The Mirror in a telephone interview that he no longer loved his wife hence his actions. Fadzai Chikanga also confirmed the story but Rutendo refused to speak to the Press.

Chikanga said it all started on Wednesday morning last week when her husband who was coming from night shift brought along Rutendo and introduced her as his new wife. She said her husband is trained in karate.

After the introductions the two got into bed in the one room that Manombe rents in the populous suburb. Shattered by what the two were about to do, Chikanga went next door and sought the intervention of neighbours.

‘It shocked me when they got into my bed. I rushed to tell neighbours who came and persuaded them to stop what they were doing. The neighbours even told Rutendo that it was taboo for her to sleep on another woman’s bed but they went back into bed as soon as the neighbours left.

“They made love and it pained me so much. I was chocked with pain. I spent the night together with Rutendo after my husband had gone to work. I would not touch Rutendo because Manombe is trained in karate and he would have killed me if I did that. “I consulted my relatives the next day and they told me to pack my bags and leave,” said Chikanga.

Musa Mseleku’s wife MaYeni, has once again found herself trending on Twitter for the wrong reasons. This time around, the Uthendo Nes’thembu reality show star, is being bashed for being rude. Mseleku’s family dynamics and the drama that unfolds in the household keep viewers on the edge of their collective seats every time the show airs. In a teaser for next week’s episode, Mseluku plans a surprise gateway trip for his wives to thank them for throwing him a birthday party.

But, it seems it will end in tears as upon reaching their destination, the mood gets tense. This is a result of MaYeni’s attitude towards the other wives. The teaser shows his wives collecting their keys at the reception of the hotel where they will be staying. In a teasing gesture, Macele snatches MaYeni’s key and ruffles her feathers. A furious MaYeni is then heard saying, “I don’t tolerate nonsense.

As though that wasn’t enough, they are then seen playing a game to lighten up the mood, with MaYeni quickly turning the mood sour when asked who was the last person to picked up her child from school and she says no one.

MaCele slams her saying they should be considerate of each other. Viewers didn’t like her decision to not acknowledge the other wives. Her behavior also did not sit well with avid viewers of the show who quickly took to Twitter to accuse her of having a “stinking attitude” towards the other wives.

The then accounting student was due to receive her monthly R1 400 food allowance, but because of what was described in court as a “ridiculous and absurd technical glitch”, R14 million was credited to her account.

The State charges that Mani failed to report the error and embarked on a spending spree. According to the State, between 1 June, when the money landed in her account, until 13 August, when NSFAS uncovered the error, she had spent an average of R11 000 per day. The money was transferred by Cape Town-based company Intellimali, which was contracted by WSU to disburse funds to its students.

On Tuesday, the State prosecutor in the four-year trial, advocate Luthando Makoyi, said Mani had admitted to many aspects of the indictment. During closing arguments, Makoyi told the magistrate, Twanet Olivier, that Mani admitted she spent the money at 48 merchants in the Eastern Cape, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Makoyi added that Mani should be convicted of theft, saying she knew the money was not hers, but spent it. He told Olivier that Mani admitted her student card was eventually blocked when the error was noticed.

Answering questions outside court, Mani told journalists: The case is not about how the credit was spent. It’s about theft, and we are arguing against [the] theft charge. I am not guilty of theft. Mani’s lawyer, Asanda Pakade, argued in court that there was no intention on his client’s part to acquire R14 million, nor to permanently deprive NSFAS of its property intentionally.

Therefore, there was no theft. Pakade submitted an application for Mani to be discharged at the conclusion of the State’s case, saying it had failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that she stole the cash. Olivier dismissed Pakade’s application.

Pakade said Mani signed a loan agreement with NSFAS to receive a monthly allowance of R1 400 and had no expectation of R14 million. He said: There was a mutual agreement between Mani and NSFAS. She never breached systems or made misrepresentation. The R14 million transfer was an error on the side of NSFAS.

Pakade said that, when she noticed the erroneous transfer, Mani reported the incident to NSFAS and Walter Sisulu University. Pakade said this behaviour was not consistent with theft and, therefore, Mani could not be convicted.

But Makoyi argued: If you receive money, you are not entitled to spend it, knowing that you’re not meant to receive it, you are guilty of theft. Makoyi said the fact that Mani admitted she reported the erroneous transfer was an admission that she knew she was not entitled to the money she spent.

Pakade responded that there was a pre-existing agreement between Mani and NSFAS – and that the entity expected her to repay whatever amount she used upon finishing her studies and securing employment.

He added that Mani’s case had unique features, which set it apart from other theft cases.

Pakade told Olivier:
The entire evidence that was placed before you [by the State] is nothing short of evidence that seeks to invoke the feelings of the court by telling you how the money was spent – which is not the issue. The issue is whether the accused committed theft, intentionally stole from NSFAS.

Responding to the dismissed application outside the court, Pakade said: “It’s just a temporary inconvenience. We are still very much optimistic about our case, very much confident. When we return, we know that we will put this matter to bed.

“We still believe the State doesn’t have any case against our client. When we come back, rest assured that we will get an acquittal.” Intellimali director Roy Jackson had testified in court that the erroneous transfer was believed to have been caused by a technical glitch.

Twist to the Nashville High school issue: Students stage COVID-19 drama in bid to get Exeat Weekend. A voice note that went viral on social media from an alleged parent of a learner at the school claimed that students were spending most of their time sleeping in the sun, probably unaware they have COVID-19.

Students at Nashville High School in Gweru stage-managed a COVID-19 “crisis” at the school in protest over the postponement of an exeat weekend which was scheduled for today by school authorities, it has emerged.

The parent said she was called to attend to her child, who tested COVID-19 positive and is now receiving treatment. It has, however since emerged that the audio and pictures of schoolchildren lying in the sun were part of the stunt.

Gweru District COVID-19 Taskforce Chairperson, Joram Chimedza on Friday morning said all the 187 boarding pupils in the school tested negative for coronavirus following some rapid tests at the school. He said:

We reacted to reports of audio and pictures that went viral circulating on social media platforms last night and did the tests today. Not even a single pupil or teacher tested positive, the situation is normal at the school and we appeal to members of the media to stop peddling falsehoods.

The pictures were actually sent by some of the pupils who were not happy after they were denied an exeat weekend. They meant to cause alarm. He said testing was ongoing on teaching and non-teaching staff with none having tested positive so far.

US surgeons successfully test pig kidney transplant in human

US surgeons successfully test pig kidney transplants in human. The procedure was done at NYU Langone Health in New York City using a kidney that came from a pig that had been genetically modified to stop the organ from being recognised by the body as “foreign” and being rejected.

US surgeons say they have successfully given a pig’s kidney to a human in a transplant breakthrough they hope could ultimately solve donor organ shortages. The recipient was brain-dead, meaning they were already on artificial life support with no prospect of recovering.

The family of the recipient consented to the experiment before she was due to be taken off of life support. US regulator the FDA has approved the use of genetically modified pig organs for this type of research use.

For three days, the new kidney was attached to her blood vessels and maintained outside her body, giving researchers access to it. Test results of the transplanted kidney’s function “looked pretty normal,” said transplant surgeon Dr Robert Montgomery, who led the study.

He said the kidney made “the amount of urine that you would expect” from a transplanted human kidney, and there was no evidence of the vigorous, early rejection seen when unmodified pig kidneys are transplanted into non-human primates. The recipient’s abnormal creatinine level – an indicator of poor kidney function – returned to normal after the transplant, Montgomery said.

A heart transplant recipient himself, Dr Montgomery says there is an urgent need for finding more organs for people on waiting lists. He said: The traditional paradigm that someone has to die for someone else to live is never going to keep up.

I certainly understand the concern and what I would say is that currently about 40% of patients who are waiting for a transplant die before they receive one. We use pigs as a source of food, we use pigs for medicinal uses – for valves, for medication. I think it’s not that different. The work is not yet peer-reviewed or published but there are plans for this.

Experts say it is the most advanced experiment in the field so far. Similar tests have been done in non-human primates, but not people, until now. Using pigs for transplants is not a new idea though. Pig heart valves are already widely used in humans. And their organs are a good match for people when it comes to size.
