ZIMRA to deploy more sophisticated equipment at Beitbridge Border Post

ZIMRA to deploy more sophisticated equipment at Beitbridge Border Post. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) says it is in the process of acquiring more hi-tech equipment including mobile cargo and baggage scanners to speed up operations at the newly upgraded Beitbridge border post.

ZIMRA Acting Commissioner-General, Rameck Masaire, on Wednesday said that they had started deploying additional manpower to the border post in anticipation of increased traffic during the festive seasons. He said: We have gone out on tender to get additional cargo and baggage scanners. The tender process is now at an advanced stage. The new equipment will help us get the job done.

However, we will not use the scanners only, but we have other risk management options that are available so that we don’t have a situation where scanners delay the movement of cargo.

… We have already started deploying additional resources to Beitbridge so that we have optimum human resources that are required for the operations. He said they were taking staff from other less busy operations, which they were now deploying to Beitbridge, the SADC’s busiest inland port of entry. Said Masaire:

Beitbridge has been identified as one of our key operating areas and there is a deliberate decision to make sure that all levels within the border are properly supported in terms of recruitment.

So that process is already in place from regional managers, shift managers, and supervisors and general staff. … We are looking at an excess of 300 workers and currently, they are less than that. In fact, we need at least 450 people at Beitbridge to increase efficiency.

Truck drivers have been experiencing long delays at the Beitbridge border post recently, with the South African government blaming Zimbabwe for the chaos, saying it is negatively impacting the movement of goods across the region.

Truck drivers were reportedly spending up to 10 days at the Beitbridge border post as toll company Zimborders, which has been awarded a contract by the Zimbabwean government to upgrade the border post, began collecting toll fees.

Kazembe Kazembe plays President Mnangagwa. The provincial chairman who has since lost favor and surviving on Mnangagwa’s mercy told the gathering that he indeed pushed Mnangagwa to address a number of supporters who were bussed to Guruve. Embattled ZANU-PF chairperson Kazembe Kazembe forced President Emmerson Mnangagwa to conduct a rally soon after he finished commissioning of Eureka mine in Guruve yesterday.

“I was very mischievous because l pushed His Excellency to come and meet his people since it had been long he came here on government duty but l know that party supporters were yeaning to meet the President hence he gave in to my plan,” thundered Kazembe.

Mnangagwa confirmed that Kazembe had been mischievous by planning a rally behind his back but he gave in because he also wanted to talk to people in a bid to mobilize his five million vote target. “Your chairman has been so mischievous l came to commission Eureka mine little did l know that he had organized a rally behind my back but nonetheless his mischief is good because at least you have seen me and l also saw you,” Mnangagwa said.

As jostling for provincial for positions ahead of provincial elections grips the province Kazembe was trying hard to prove to people that he is Mnangagwa’s top ally and try to send a signal to other potential contenders on his post like James Makamba and Tafadzwa Musarara. However, Mnangagwa told the gathering that they should not be carried away by opposition parties as they begged for targeted sanctions.

“We should all wish for a good country with good leaders not those that beg for sanctions, we have gone more than twenty years with targeted sanctions called for by the opposition, we know they are amongst us in the country but we should just ignore them and let life continue,” he said.

“it is also unfortunate that in SADCC we are the only country that was not given funds to cater for Covid 19 pandemic vaccines but thank God to date we have more than five million people who were vaccinated and less covid 19 patients, “Mnangagwa said.

He further encouraged people to embrace Pfumvunza saying it will curb hunger and more Presidential inputs are going to be poured to the people, he further warned Agritex extension workers who are selectively distributing inputs to give everyone who has tilled the land.

“Your provincial minister told me that you are embracing Pfumvunza and we vowed that no one will starve but l am hearing that there are some AGRITEX extension workers who are selectively allocating inputs they should be warned if they still want to survive in my government.

ZANU PF MP: Journalists being paid to write anti-Zimbabwe stories

ZANU PF MP: Journalists being paid to write anti-Zimbabwe stories. While addressing the house of assembly on Wednesday, Nyabani said members of the media’s welfare should be catered for to avoid them being paid by hostile agencies to write stories that do not promote the country. “I am directing my mind to the issue of journalists.

Rushinga legislator Tendai Nyabani claimed that journalists are reportedly being paid to write stories that tarnish the image of the country. They should also be catered for so that they report factually and that should also come out of the manner in which they are living or their remuneration.

They should not be paid to write stories that are not in the interest of the country,” said Nyabani. Nyabani was commenting on the state of the nation address by the President earlier this month that touched on the welfare of the journalists.

He also added that journalists end up engaging in unethical corrupt operations like being bribed because the field is not well-paying.

“They say so because if they are paid, they will be in a position to report factually the truth as it is because they will be properly remunerated and as a result, they are not tempted to engage in corrupt tendencies as they disseminate information to the majority of the people,” he added.

Allegations have been levelled against journalists in the past that they are being paid to write anti-Zimbabwe stories.

Most recently, an online news agency NewsHawks has been accused of being paid by anti-government group to report negatively about the country. Meanwhile ZANU-PF has been advocating for a patriotic bill that seeks to criminalize any citizen or journalist who tarnish the image of the country.

Marry Chiwenga’s doctors in no-show

Marry Chiwenga’s doctors in no-show. Mubaiwa faces fraud charges after she was accused of attempting to obtain a marriage certificate at a time when Chiwenga was sick. She also faces money-laundering and attempted murder charges.

Doctors examining Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife, Marry Mubaiwa, failed to turn up in court yesterday to testify over her health condition.

Her doctors failed to turn up on Tuesday to ascertain her health condition for her trial to kick off. Mubaiwa is suffering from lymphoedema, but the State wanted her trial to continue despite protests from her lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa.

This marked the third time that her doctors avoided testifying in court. Prosecutor Michael Reza told magistrate Lazini Ncube that he called the doctor, but someone answered the phone and advised him that the doctor was in the theatre.

Reza said when he called again, the phone was not answered. Mtetwa had warned the court her client’s doctors were living in fear of their boss, Chiwenga who is also Health minister.

Reza and Mtetwa then agreed that a clinical director at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals will provide a doctor who specialises in mental health to examine Mubaiwa before the trial. The matter was postponed to November 10 for the medical specialists to testify.

Supreme Court judge Justice George Chiweshe, who is a retired soldier and former chief magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi, who is now a High Court judge, are witnesses in the matter.

Wheels coming off Douglas Mwonzora train?

Wheels coming off Douglas Mwonzora train? Kudzanai Mashumba, believed to be one of the MDC-T founding members, had to run for dear life after about 10 youths led by youth chairperson Yvonne Musarurwa stormed into the conference room baying for his blood.

Rowdy MDC-T supporters yesterday violently disrupted a fellow party member who was addressing a Press conference in Harare to expose party leader Douglas Mwonzora’s alleged misuse of party funds, assaulted and forced him to abandon the event.

During the melee, business came to a standstill along Jason Moyo Street in the central business district as Mashumba sought to escape the attacks. Luckily, he was whisked away in a passerby’s vehicle after the assault that left him nursing multiple injuries.

MDC-T youths also threatened to assault journalists who were interviewing Mashumba. They chanted slogans disowning Mashumba, claiming that he had been sent by their rival faction, the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa to tarnish Mwonzora’s image.

MDC-T party spokesperson Witness Dube, however, described the attack as “a clean political exchange” between the youth and Mashumba. He said the “intervention” by the youth was meant to stop their party name from being brought into disrepute by Mashumba.

“Kudzanai Mashumba is not a member of the MDC-T party. He was expelled about six months ago from the party over a myriad of offences which include absenteeism, alcoholism and bullying of other workers. He was never a politician. He was a mere worker who rose through the ranks to become vice-president Thokozani Khupe’s aide until he was dismissed,” Dube said.

“He cannot, therefore, be competent enough to speak on alleged abuse of funds and other party affairs when he was never directly involved in the affairs. The intervention that was conducted by the youth was within the youth’s responsibility as the vanguard of the party.”

Mashumba claimed to be a serving chief of protocol in the MDC-T, a position he was appointed to by party vice-president Thokozani Khupe. He accused Mwonzora of abusing $6 million allocated to the party under the Political Parties Finance Act. Mashumba also accused Mwonzora of imposing himself as the party leader.

“The constitution of the party is very clear on the timetable for any congress. The term of office of the 2014 office bearers expired in November 2019 and one wonders how and why the current office bearers continue to exercise their functions,” he said.

Mashumba said the MDC-T was being led by unelected leaders.

“It is in the public domain that this self-imposed leadership has blocked the people’s rights to elect their own leaders and has unashamedly left one person to appoint and co-opt his own cronies into the party leadership, a custom well-orchestrated in Zanu-PF,” he said in a written speech he had given to the media before the attack.

In a statement issued later by Dube, he claimed that the commotion was caused by a member of the public who wanted to disrupt the event, with video evidence showing Musarurwa intervening. He claimed Musarurwa was actually protecting Mashumba.

Still worried about getting a vaccine for COVID-19? Here’s how to understand the rare, but real, risks

Still worried about getting a vaccine for COVID-19? Here’s how to understand the rare, but real, risks. Whether you’re scrolling through your Facebook feed, checking texts from friends and family, or chatting with fellow workmates, you’re bound to encounter questions about whether or not it’s safe to get vaccinated.

Post-vaccine health issues are monitored and reported – but remain relatively rare. Over a billion of people around the world have signed on to get their shots to ward off COVID-19. But millions are waiting and wondering.

Are these vaccines safe? Do they cause major side effects? What are the long-term health impacts? Can they kill you? The questions, to some degree, make sense. No drug is risk-free. And there are some known, headline-making adverse reactions following COVID-19 vaccines, including rare cases where people have died.

There’s also plenty of misinformation circulating, from debunked studies on vaccination risks to anecdotal, unproven accounts of negative outcomes after a Jeb.

Yet there’s also overwhelming evidence that these vaccines are saving many lives while carrying far, far lower risks than the disease they’re made to prevent – one that has so far killed almost five million people allover the world. So why does it sometimes feel like concerns about vaccines are taking up rent-free space in many people’s minds?

Dr Xolani Ndlovu who is the Acting Clinical Director at Mpilo Hospital, puts it this way: If you hear a scary story about someone’s vaccination experience, whether it proves true or not, it typically “counts more” on an emotional level than any reassuring safety statistic.

That means navigating fraught discussions around vaccination requires taking a step back to evaluate all the evidence beyond the anecdotes. “The known threat looms larger in your brain than the numbers that people may bring up to you,” she said. “Our brains are just so consumed by COVID.”

Supa Mandiwanzira lashes out at ex-NetOne CEO Reward Kangai

Supa Mandiwanzira lashes out at ex-NetOne CEO Reward Kangai. This was after Kangai wrote to Prosecutor-General Kumbirai Hodzi on September 28, 2021 imploring him to expedite prosecution of NetOne’s million-dollar corruption scandal, which implicated Mandiwanzira, who was, however, acquitted of the charges by the High Court.

Former Information and Communication Technology minister Supa Mandiwanzira yesterday accused ex-NetOne chief executive officer Reward Kangai of maliciously attempting to drag him into the parastatal’s US$4 million corruption scandal, for which he had already been cleared by the courts.

Kangai was the State witness in the matter in which Mandiwanzira was being accused of interfering in the operations of NetOne by allegedly corruptly handpicking a Chinese company, Megawatt Energy, to investigate another Chinese firm, Huawei. Megawatt was set to be paid US$4 million.

The charges were, however, quashed by the then High Court judge Justice Nicholas Mathonsi following an application for review by Mandiwanzira.

In his letter to Hodzi, Kangai claimed that he was still being victimised by unnamed individuals involved in the scandal, adding that there was interference with the course of justice in handling the matter which he reported to authorities in 2016.

He said he was fired from his post as NetOne chief executive and was, instead, arrested for corruption after having exposed the US$4 million scandal.

But through his lawyer Fungai Chimwamurombe, Mandiwanzira distanced himself from Kangai’s dismissal, saying the latter was implicated in a forensic audit report which exposed mismanagement at the parastatal, resulting in the termination of his contract.

“Mr Kangai was terminated as chief executive officer of NetOne by the nonrenewal of his contract after 15 years at the helm of the State-owned enterprise. His termination followed a damning forensic audit report by PricewaterhouseCoopers which unearthed extensive corruption and mismanagement at NetOne and directly implicated Mr Kangai,” Chimwamurombe said.

He said although Kangai had lobbied for the arrest of prosecutor Admore Nyazamba, charges against him were later withdrawn by Hodzi after he discovered that they were malicious and baseless.

High drama as man dumps pregnant wife at lover’s home

High drama as man dumps pregnant wife at lover’s home. In a dramatic incident that left villagers in Village1 Dawlish area in Chiredzi North shocked, a man dumped his six-month pregnant wife at her alleged lover’s house after he caught them having s.e.x in his matrimonial bedroom.

The wife’s lover also happens to be his best friend! Joel Malaya Muchacha decided to take the weird action after he found his wife Trinity Makumucha (30) in bed with Kennias Musakona (41).

This was also after Musakona refused to pay him eight beasts which he had demanded as compensation for bedding his wife. It is reported that Muchacha, who was working in Chikombedzi, came back after he reportedly heard rumours of his wife’s affair with Musakona and decided to take action.

When he came back, and after staying for a week, Muchacha told his pregnant wife that he had decided to go to South Africa. On the day he claimed he was going to South Africa Muchacha went to a relative’s house to stay while spying on his wife’s movements.

His suspicions were confirmed on that very day as his wife invited her lover (Musakona) to their house for their usual lovemaking sessions.

Muchacha, who had given the two lovebirds a little time before coming out of his hideout, walked stealthily into his matrimonial bedroom. When he stormed into the bedroom, he couldn’t believe his eyes when he found his pregnant wife in the act with Musakona, said a source who requested anonymity.

As evidence that he had caught them in bed, Muchacha reportedly took Musakona‘s clothes and two packs of condoms, which Musakona had brought for a supposedly all-night s.e.x gala.

After being busted, Makumucha confessed to her husband that it was not their first time to have s.e.x as Musakona was always coming to their house for sleep-overs during his absence.

“She even showed him some of the used condoms which she was hiding in the house and other unused ones that they were keeping at an anthill near Chiredzi River where they would meet for their usual s.e.x sessions,” added the source.

After his wife’s chilling confession, Muchacha took the matter to community leaders where he demanded eight beasts from Musakona as compensation for bedding his wife. Musakona, however, refused to pay the beasts, prompting Muchacha to dump his wife at her lover’s place.

Although the parties involved were not reached for comment as their mobile phones were not reachable, Dawlish area chairman Emadeous Zingwanda confirmed the incident.

“It’s true that the incident of that nature happened in our area. When the matter came to us as community leaders, we felt that eight beasts which Muchacha was demanding were too much and we instructed him to reduce the number.

We can only be able to assist them if they amicably reach an agreement on the number of beasts which Musakona should pay,” said Zingwanda.

Lodger wrecks marriage as n#de pictures are leaked

Lodger wrecks marriage as n#de pictures are leaked. Ellen Phiri (32) has been married to Chenjerai Samu (43) and they have children together. Ellen is a hairdresser while the alleged marriage wrecker, Sukoluhle Sibanda, who is well known as Langa was her major client.

A secret love affair between a tenant and a married man was exposed after a child stumbled on the lovebird’s nude pictures and informed her mother leading to the breakdown of the marriage.

The two got so close and Ellen offered her a place to rent at her home in Matshobane suburb when she left in 2019 to stay in South Africa. She left their children in Matshobane.

While she was in South Africa, her husband Chenjerai Samu (43) fell in love with Langa. The source said: “Chenjerai would visit to see the children. “During that time, the two developed a romance after which they fell in love and they would book at a city lodge where they would engage in sex. After certain s.e.x sessions they would capture n#des.”

The insider went on to say, Chenjerai revealed that he would have s.e.x with Langa so as to hurt Ellen. “It seems Chenjerai was avenging because he once disclosed to Ellen’s relative that he was sleeping with Langa so as to hurt her because he discovered that she once cheated on him,” said the source.

During one of her routine visits, their child stumbled on Chenjerai and Langa’s n#des on his phone and told her mother. “The child informed her mother leading to the exposure of the secret love affair,” said the source. Ellen said after the expose, Chenjerai apologised.

“He apologised profusely but I told him that we have to engage our parents so as to solve this matter but he has not bothered to meet my parents and how can I forgive him because this matter is beyond me and it now involves my family,” she said. Ellen added: “After that I phoned Langa complaining why she was wrecking my marriage. She insulted me.”

In a bid to hurt her and embarrass her Langa reportedly took Ellen’s image and captioned it with n#de pictures and messages pointing out how much she charges for s.e.x. The message read: “Welcome to Ellen, for blow job R150, R600 night without protection, an@l s.e.x R50, night R1000 and night without protection R1000.”

Alongside the image she put nudes showing a woman’s private parts and buttocks and another image where a hand holds a man organ. She fingered Langa and said she wanted to sue her.

“It’s Langa who captioned my picture with those messages and put nude images. I want to sue her for defaming my character,” she said. Contacted for a comment Langa said: “Who told you that? And why can’t you ask those people who told you.”

When this reporter pressed on she said: “Kulendoda yenja (Is there a woman who falls in love with a dog)”. Before he terminated the call Chenjerai said: “I have no comment. And why are you concerned about it.”

Zimra sets up crisis management team at Beitbridge Border Post

Zimra sets up crisis management team at Beitbridge Border Post. The development comes at a time when the country’s Border Efficiency Management Systems (BEMS) Committee has with immediate effect resolved to fine errant transporters who arrive at Beitbridge without enough paperwork and take up space at the border post, causing congestion.

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has said it is setting up a crisis management team to be on the ground around the clock at Beitbridge Border Post to ensure efficiency and avoid congestion and delays.

The need for customs processes to be done and duties to be paid before arrival at the border is mandatory but some transporters have been defying this rule. As a result, at some point 20 or 30 commercial trucks will take up space causing bottlenecks in the smooth flow of traffic. The BEMS Committee met transporters, freight forwarders, and other critical agencies yesterday.

Following the meeting, stakeholders recommended that Zimbabwean customs officers be seconded to the South African side of the border to control movement of cargo to avoid the leakages into the country of un-cleared goods.

It is understood that South Africans have been letting cargo pass disregarding the pre-notification system.
Zimra acting board chairperson, Mrs Josephine Matambo said they were looking at addressing the backlog on northbound traffic in the next 24 hours.

“In addition to other interventions, we are setting up a crisis management team to be on the ground around the clock implementing all the resolutions to the dot,” she said.

“We are going to be penalizing all those parking within the border beyond three hours and our team will be hard on the ground giving hourly reports to management. After having interactions with most drivers both regional and local we have discovered that some are arriving without toll fees and are parking and occupying space. They then wait for transporters or customs agents to make the payments to Zimborders”.

Mrs Matambo said in some instances transporters were taking longer than necessary to process payments with Zimborders. She said the fines will go a long way in addressing issues of unnecessary parking within the border area.

The official said Zimborders was also working on extending the parking space to carry 70 more trucks by the beginning of next month. The parking on the imports section can carry at least 200 trucks at any given time.

“The other issue is that the drivers coming in from South Africa feel that our border is safe for resting and they would then park and not contact the agents or runners to release them until the next morning. Instead, they should arrive and process the papers and leave the border which is not a truck stop. They are avoiding truck parks in both countries,” said Mrs Matambo.

It has also been established that some drivers arriving before midnight don’t want to be cleared until the next day so that they have an extra day to claim more remuneration.

At the same time, customs agents and others are said to be working with skeletal staff at night despite the border operating on a 24-hour basis. To enhance efficiency, the BEMS Committee has requested customs agents to make written commitments to Zimra to deliver around the clock. Those failing to deliver will be penalized.

“We have talked to Zimborders and they have assured us that their prepayment system should be up and running concurrently with our pre-clearance system in the next 24 hours. The idea is to make the traffic flow system as seamless as possible,” said Mrs Matambo.

Zimra’s acting commissioner-general, Mr Rameck Masaire said they were deploying more manpower to Beitbridge where they expect to have around 450 workers during the festive season. He said they had also tendered for more mobile scanners they intend to deploy to Sadc’s busiest inland port to boost their enforcement and compliance section.

Chelsea (1) v Norwich (20), 12.30pm – Live on BT Sport

Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner will miss out for Chelsea through injury. Lukaku suffered an ankle injury and Werner a hamstring problem when the Blues thumped Malmo 4-0 in Wednesday’s Champions League clash. Christian Pulisic remains sidelined with a troublesome ankle complaint of his own.

Bottom-of-the-table Norwich will be without on-loan Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour, who is unable to face his parent club. Mathias Normann is fit after being forced off during the closing stages against Brighton with cramps, but Todd Cantwell is not yet in contention after his recent Achilles and ankle problems.

Crystal Palace (14) v Newcastle (19)

Wilfried Zaha will return for Crystal Palace after the Ivory Coast international missed Monday’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal with illness. He was back in training on Wednesday and is set to start against the Magpies. Ebere Eze and Nathan Ferguson (both Achilles) remain absent.

Newcastle interim boss Graeme Jones will be without midfielder Jonjo Shelvey through suspension following his dismissal against Tottenham. Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has stepped up his recovery from a foot problem and returned to training this week, but remains short of full fitness.

Everton (8) v Watford (16)

Everton forward Richarlison is available after missing the last five matches in all competitions due to injury and his return is a welcome boost to manager Rafael Benitez, who expects Dominic Calvert-Lewin to be sidelined for another four or five weeks. Andre Gomes and Fabian Delph have resumed training but Yerry Mina is ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury.

Watford’s Joshua King could return to face his old club after he sat out the 5-0 thrashing against Liverpool with a knee injury. Hornets boss Claudio Ranieri will have to assess Kiko Femenia, who has a hip injury, but the Italian is still without Francisco Sierralta and Christian Kabasele (both hamstring) while Nicolas Nkoulou is building up match fitness.

Leeds (17) v Wolves (10)

Kalvin Phillips will not be rushed back into action by Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa following the midfielder’s recovery from injury. Phillips withdrew from the England squad for their recent World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary after suffering a calf problem in the win over Watford and also missed the 1-0 defeat at Southampton. Luke Ayling, Patrick Bamford, Junior Firpo and Robin Koch also remain sidelined, but Raphinha is available.

Francisco Trincao is in contention for Wolves after he completed his period of self-isolation after contracting Covid-19. The on-loan Barcelona forward returning to training this week and could feature at Leeds, but Willy Boly will not be part of the squad after he picked up an unspecified injury.

Southampton (15) v Burnley (18)

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has a decision to make in attack with Che Adams back from injury to rival Armando Broja for a starting place. Broja impressed alongside Nathan Redmond last week and the on-loan Chelsea forward will hope to keep his place. James Ward-Prowse is back from suspension, with Jack Stephens the only player absent from Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Burnley will check on Ben Mee, Charlie Taylor and Matej Vydra. All three missed last weekend’s defeat by Manchester City — Taylor and Vydra with knocks and Mee after contracting coronavirus. Dale Stephens is back out on the grass as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury but he will need more time.

Brighton (4) v Man City (3), 5.30 – Live on Sky Sports

Brighton defender Adam Webster could be available after missing the Seagulls’ past five games in all competitions as he returned to training this week and is hoping to prove his fitness. Midfielders Yves Bissouma and Enock Mwepu are also in contention having recovered from knocks to be unused substitutes last week but Danny Welbeck (hamstring) and Steven Alzate (ankle) are still out.

John Stones, who was not in the squad for the Champions League clash against Club Brugge is available to make the trip while Brazilian duo Ederson and Gabriel Jesus — who both linked up with their team-mates in Belgium after missing last weekend’s win over Burnley following periods of isolation, are also available. Ferran Torres is the only absentee as the Spain international continues his recovery from a metatarsal injury.

Sunday
Brentford (9) v Leicester (11), 2pm

Brentford will be without Yoane Wissa as the DR Congo winger faces a few weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury. Shandon Baptiste (shoulder) and Vitaly Janelt (thigh) will be assessed after missing the defeat by Chelsea last weekend.

Leicester are without Marc Albrighton for up to three weeks. The winger was on the end of a bad tackle from Aleksandr Lomovitskiy late in the Foxes’ Europa League win at Spartak Moscow. Ayoze Perez is back after illness but Wilfred Ndidi (hamstring) is out while James Justin (knee) and Wesley Fofana (broken leg) remain sidelined.

West Ham (7) v Tottenham (5), 2pm – Live on Sky Sports

Michail Antonio should return for West Ham after being rested for the Hammers’ midweek Europa League win over Belgian side Genk. Right-back Vladimir Coufal looks set to miss out again with a groin problem.

Tottenham have no fresh injuries for the trip across the capital. The team that beat Newcastle last weekend did not travel to Holland for the Europa Conference League defeat to Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday, instead training in London. Matt Doherty and Ryan Sessegnon remain injured and will not be involved.

Man Utd (6) v Liverpool (2), 4.30pm – Live on Sky Sports

Manchester United have injury doubts over Bruno Fernandes, Fred and Marcus Rashford. The trio sustained knocks during the Champions League win over Atalanta on Wednesday and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes they settle down before Sunday. Anthony Martial has built up his fitness after returning unfit from international duty with France and is available, but centre-back Raphael Varane remains absent with a groin injury.

Curtis Jones should be back in contention for Liverpool but fellow midfielder Thiago Alcantara will remain on the sidelines. Jones missed last weekend’s game against Watford and the Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid with an injury sustained on England Under-21 duty. Thiago continues to nurse the calf problem that has kept him out for the past month and he may not be fit until after the next international break in November.

Patrick Chinamasa’s Borrowdale house burns down: Video

Patrick Chinamasa’s Borrowdale house burns down. Firefighters responded to the inferno between 3.30 and 4 PM and managed to save part of the house from destruction. Chinamasa revealed that his one-year-old grandson was rescued unharmed from the main bedroom where the fire was first detected following what he described as a “boom sound”.

The ZANU PF secretary for finance and acting political commissar Patrick Chinamasa’s Borrowdale home suffered extensive damage from a fire that broke out on Friday afternoon.

He, however, ruled out foul play, and described the fire as “an accident, an act of God.” Chinamasa said in a statement: Thank God the child’s mother, who had just arrived back from work, and the housekeeper managed to rescue the baby.

The main bedroom, the bedroom where the fire originated from and my study were all gutted by the fire and reduced to ashes. Nothing was saved from these rooms.

The Fire Brigade arrived in time to save the dining room, the lounge, the kitchen and the two remaining bedrooms. As to the cause of the fire, I am suspecting an electrical fault. I am ruling out completely any foul play. Enemies may celebrate my misfortune but I believe there was no enemy hand behind this incident.

I know social media will be awash with all sorts of speculations. This I have no power to stop. What I know from the bottom of my heart is that this was an accident, an act of God.

Chinamasa said he had been left “severely traumatised” by the incident, which he said destroyed all that he had worked for over the years, leaving him with only the clothes on his back. He added: It’s not easy to accept that what we have worked for all our lives has gone up in smoke in a matter of seconds.

All that we have remained with are the clothes we were wearing. The furniture, clothes, blankets, files, documents, records, manuscripts, family photos… everything, and above all my priceless and irreplaceable library is now just a heap of ash and rubble.

Chinamasa invoked the biblical Job whose story of keeping the faith no matter how grim the circumstances of life inspires Christians. He said: In conversations with friends and relatives, I find myself fielding Job-like questions but I want to assure all who care for my welfare that in God I trust and he will provide.

Chinamasa has experienced his fair share of misfortunes in recent months. In July this year, he was involved in a car crash at the 12-kilometre peg after Rusape, before the tollgate, and spent some time in hospital recovering from his injuries.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Chinamasa said he escaped death by the skin of his teeth but urged people not to panic. He added: I was saved by the airbags, otherwise, we will be talking about something else.

President Mnangagwa threatens to fire State Security Minister Owen Ncube

President Mnangagwa threatens to fire State Security Minister Owen Ncube. Owen Ncube has been fighting to wrest the provincial chairmanship from the incumbent, Daniel Mackenzie-Ncube and had the backing of Local Government minister July Moyo.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently threatened to fire State Security minister Owen “Mudha” Ncube following his involvement in factional battles currently ravaging ZANU PF Midlands Province.

Moyo considers himself as the province’s political godfather but his claim is rivalled by his cabinet and politburo counterpart Joram Gumbo who also claims the honours.

NewZimbabwe.com reported a politburo source as having said that Mnangagwa summoned Mudha to a meeting where he strongly chastised him for his role in the ongoing factionalism.

Mnangagwa also warned Mudha that unless he renounces his bid for the party provincial chairmanship, he would be left with no option but to fire him from the lucrative ministerial job.

Ncube reportedly chose to keep the ministerial job and bowed out of the race, preferring instead to throw his weight behind another claimant, Edson Chiherenge Chakanyuka. Said the source:

The real reason why Mudha dropped out of the chairmanship’s race is that he was summoned by the president and told in plain terms that if he continues on that path, he would have to be fired.

He was given two options, either to focus on the chairmanship and lose the ministerial position or to renounce his interest in the chair and keep the job. The president’s concern was that he holds a very demanding official job that cannot be double-crossed with an equally demanding party position. So he has since decided he wants the ministry more.

After that, we were all called in by the president and told to come up with three names who will contest for the chairmanship. However, the leadership overwhelmingly endorsed Larry Mavima. No other name was submitted, which means Chiherenge was omitted.

His camp though has not stopped campaigning regardless of that and thinks it can brew a shocker. They may be hopeful, which is okay, but they stand virtually no chance.

Drama as woman gatecrashes her daughter’s wedding snatches cake away

Drama as woman gatecrashes her daughter’s wedding snatches cake away. Jane Mangwaya of Gaza E stormed the court trying to stop her daughter, Sithembile Mangwaya’s wedding.

A Chipinge woman gatecrashed her only daughter’s wedding at Chipinge Magistrates’ Court last week on Friday after she discovered through the grapevine that the latter was tying the knot without her knowledge.

Jane said she raised her daughter single-handedly risking being jailed by selling dagga to raise her school fees. Court officials and police details at Chipinge Magistrates’ Court had a torrid time calming Jane.

She had to be escorted to Chipinge magistrate, Franklin Mkwananzi’s chambers for a meeting with the other parties. Mkwananzi ruled that Jane had no right to stop the wedding since her daughter was an adult blessed with three children.

He added that her daughter had the right to invite guests of her choice. In anger, Jane stormed out of the meeting and hurled unprintable words at Sithembile’s friends and other guests. She said:

You are my only daughter. What crime did I commit for you to submit me to such humiliation? Surely, how can you wed without my knowledge? Your Worship, I struggled to raise my daughter, and look at how she is repaying me.

I used to sell dagga to raise money for her school fees, and look what is doing to me. You can arrest me now, I don’t care about anyone. Jane then grabbed the wedding cake and vanished from the scene.

Sithembile and the groom, Kenious Makanyanya, eventually exchanged nuptial vows when peace had been restored. The couple’s family and friends later managed to raise R500 to buy another cake.

In a telephone interview with The Weekender after the wedding, Jane said she would not forgive Sithembile for snubbing her at her wedding.

However, her daughter Sithembile, said she holds no grudges with her mother. She said: I have no grudges with her, but the wedding was a private affair. I will invite her to forthcoming events.

ZUPCO set to pay NRZ $14 Million monthly for commuter trains

ZUPCO set to pay NRZ $14 Million monthly for commuter trains. ZUPCO is the sole intra-city public transport provider but has failed to meet demand. In a bid to provide adequate transport for urban dwellers, ZUPCO partnered NRZ for the latter to avail its locomotives for transporting commuters for a fee.

The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) is paying the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) ZW$14 million (about US$150 538 using the official rate) a month, for providing an urban commuter transport service.

According to an internal memo addressed to NRZ employees, ZUPCO says it pays ZW$24 000 per coach per day, translating to about ZW$14 million per month. The memo, dated 14 October 2021, reads in part:

NRZ and ZUPCO have partnered in providing urban commuter transport service in Harare and are expected to commence the service in Bulawayo soon.

The partnership entails Zupco providing fuel, personal protective equipment and on-board staff whilst NRZ provides commuter trains and crews and in return paid ZW$24 000 per coach per day translating to about ZW$14 million per month.

NRZ requires at least 40 more locomotives, 300 new and modern coaches and 300 wagons, for it to be able to meet some of the service requirements. Currently, the NRZ has about 40 locomotives, but some of them are not functional, while others have outlived their lifespan of 25 years.

MDC-T Senator: We are President Mnangagwa’s children

MDC-T Senator: We are President Mnangagwa’s children. Some of Zimbabwe’s political elites are under United States of America financial sanctions for alleged human rights abuses and corruption, among them State Security Minister Owen Ncube and the country’s ambassador to Tanzania Anselem Sanyatwe.

Senator Morgan Femai (MDC-T), says Zimbabweans are President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s children and therefore are affected by targeted sanctions imposed on him. In the Senate during the debate of the SONA speech, Femai argued that sanctions affect every Zimbabwean citizen even if they could be targeted at certain individuals. He said:

Mr President, I want to talk about sanctions. Yes, there are some who say sanctions are good while others are saying they are affecting us. It is true sanctions affect us. They are not good for us because if you find yourself with a catapult, you see a bird in its nest and you attack it, it means you have killed the chicks as well because if you kill the mother, you have killed the children as well.

We are President Mnangagwa’s children and if he is under sanctions and we are his children, where do we get food from because the person who gives us food is the one who has been slapped with sanctions?

So, it means we should build our economy on our own. If we have illegal gold panners paying taxes and if we engage on Pfumvudza, it will help us to build on our economy. Femai also took the opportunity to hit out at pirate taxis (Mushikashika), accusing them of destroying roads that have been rehabilitated by President Mnangagwa. He said:

…I think pirate taxes should really be investigated because they do not follow traffic safety rules. They are the ones damaging the roads that will have been rehabilitated by the President. The pirate taxis should be investigated so as to find out why we have a lot of illegal taxis on the roads. Who owns them?

DRC schoolchildren storm Parliament House over striking teachers’ salaries

DRC schoolchildren storm Parliament House over striking teachers’ salaries. The teachers went on strike at the start of October to protest against several issues, including salaries and the retirement age.

Hundreds of schoolchildren in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have stormed the country’s parliament building, demanding the government raise teachers’ pay to end a strike that has stopped lessons for more than two weeks.

Jean-Marc Kabund, the first vice president of the National Assembly, spoke to the students, assuring them that a solution will be found soon to end the teachers’ strike.

Tony Mwaba, minister of primary, secondary and technical education, meanwhile, said dialogue with the teachers’ unions had resumed.

Just before schools opened for the new term on 4 October, teachers’ unions in several provinces announced their intention to go on strike to express their displeasure over meagre pay.

A threat by Mwaba to remove striking teachers from the payroll has not broken their spirit. DRC President Felix Tshisekedi introduced free public primary education in September 2019.

Govt speaks on Nashville High School Alleged COVID-19 Outbreak: It’s Mild Flu. The Ministry of Health and Child Care wishes to inform parents and all concerned stakeholders that there are no cases of COVID-19 at Nashville High School in Gweru.

Full statement by the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Jasper Chimedza on the reported outbreak of COVID-19 at Nashville High School in Gweru.

Investigations conducted at the school today by the Provincial COVID-19 Rapid Response Team led by the Provincial Medical Director have indicated that there are 16 cases of mild flu among the school children who are all boarders.

The school has 192 boarders, 628-day scholars, and 38 teachers. All the boarders have been tested for COVID-19 and are all negative. The 38 teachers were also tested for COVID19 and were also negative. Testing for day scholars is in progress.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has followed up by telephoning three (3) parents who had taken their children home during the week. None of the parents has reported any of the children as COVID-19 positive.

The pictures that are circulating on social media are those of seven (7) male learners who took pictures of each other basking in the sun while waiting to be taken to Totonga Clinic after they had complained of flu-like symptoms a day ago.

All seven (7) boys were seen at Totonga Clinic and treated for mild respiratory tract infections. The seven (7) are also part of the 192 students seen and tested for COVID-19 today and are negative.

All parents with children at the school are advised to remain calm. The public is being discouraged from circulating unverified reports through social media as they can cause despondency and panic.

In the event that there is an outbreak of COVID-19 at any school, parents are advised not to withdraw their children from the school as this promotes the spread of the infection. Children are isolated or quarantined and treated at the school at no cost to the parents.

As usual, it is important that we continue practising recommended behaviours for the prevention of COVID-19 which include masking up, washing hands with soap and water or sanitizing, not touching the mouth, nose and eyes and avoiding crowds.

Any suspected cases should be reported to the nearest health facility.

Landlord steals cash, goods worth US$190 000 from popular socialite Luminitsa Jemwa. A Harare landlord, Kundai Muradzikwa, appeared in court for stealing US$32 000 cash and jewellery worth US$152 000 from a tenant. Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje told the court that on an unknown date.

Muradzikwa appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi charged with unlawful entry and was released on free bail after the court noted that he was coming from home and not police custody.

Muradzikwa allegedly seized keys from the tenant, Luminitsa Kimberly Jemwa’s maid and ordered her to vacate the place because her boss was delaying in paying rentals as well as electricity bills.

It is alleged that Muradzikwa unlawfully entered Jemwa’s house in her absence and stole money amounting to US$32 000, two watches and jewellery, all valued at US$152 000. A report was made to the police, leading to Muradzikwa’s arrest.

The maid also filed a complaint against Borrowdale Police Station officers who allegedly released the accused after alleged interference by his mother, Grace Muradzikwa.

In her affidavit, the complainant said Muradzikwa’s mother bragged that she was a commissioner, threatening to report the officers to Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga if they did not release her son.

The maid said the police then released the accused, fearing backlash from their bosses. Grace is the Insurance and Pensions Commission, commissioner.
