Govt: 99 percent of Civil Servants vaccinated

Govt: 99 percent of Civil Servants vaccinated. Almost 99 per cent of Government workers in Zimbabwe have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), data from the Public Service Commission (PSC) shows.

Zimbabwe has a 300 000-strong civil service staff complement, with teachers making the bigger chunk of the Government’s employees. Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Paul Mavima said vaccine uptake within the public service shows that the Government’s “no work, no pay” policy is working. Said Mavima:

This development shows that we are almost there as a country in achieving herd immunity. It also means that the Government has been successful in rolling out the vaccination programme.

As I have said previously, unvaccinated public sector workers will still be given priority when they want to get their jabs.

By getting vaccinated means that those who interact with our workers are now protected from the deadly coronavirus and the workplace will also be a safer place. However, those who are not yet vaccinated are being encouraged to do so because our no vaccination, no pay policy still stands.

The Government has set 31 December as the deadline by which all civil servants must be inoculated or face disciplinary action.

According to the official PSC schedule, to date, 99,68 per cent of Government workers stationed in Harare have been fully immunised, while 99,95 per cent of those in Bulawayo have received their COVID-19 jabs.

In Mashonaland West (99,86 per cent), Mashonaland East (99,94 per cent), Mashonaland Central (99,96 per cent), Manicaland (99,95 per cent), Midlands (99,57 per cent), Masvingo (99,95), Matabeleland North (99,72 per cent) and Matabeleland South (99,72 per cent) of all public sector workers have been fully vaccinated.

Austria to place unvaccinated people on Lockdown

Austria to place unvaccinated people on Lockdown. The country has the lowest vaccination rate of any western European nation apart from Liechtenstein, with many people there sceptical about having the jab. Austria will impose a COVID-19 lockdown on unvaccinated people in two hard-hit regions starting on Monday (tomorrow).

From Monday, unvaccinated people in the regions of Upper Austria and Salzburg will only be allowed to leave their homes for specific reasons, such as going to the supermarket or for a doctor’s appointment.

Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said he and regional leaders will meet again on Sunday when they plan to approve implementing the same measures across the country. Schallenberg told a news conference announcing the lockdowns that Austria’s vaccination rate is “shamefully low”. He said:

A lockdown for the unvaccinated means one cannot leave one’s home unless one is going to work, shopping (for essentials), stretching one’s legs – namely exactly what we all had to suffer through in 2020.

Austria has taken a series of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 and encourage more people to get vaccinated in recent weeks. On Monday, new rules took effect barring unvaccinated people who haven’t recovered from infection from restaurants, hotels, hairdressing salons and large public events.

About 65% of Austria’s population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, national statistics show. But many Austrians are sceptical about vaccinations, a view encouraged by the far-right Freedom Party, the third-biggest in parliament.

Zimbabwean man arrested for killing 7 women in SA. The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the man is linked to the disappearance and killing of seven women between August and October this year. The bodies were discovered in different locations in the bush in Seshego, Polokwane, Mankweng and Westernburg.

A 34-year-old Zimbabwean national who has been living in South Africa illegally has been arrested for murder, rape, defeating the ends of justice and robbery in the neighbouring country. All the deceased have been positively identified by their next of kin. The suspect allegedly lured his victims by promising them jobs through social media.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the suspect had earlier been arrested for the alleged possession of a suspected stolen cellphone but further investigations revealed the murders. He said:

We have arrested a 34-year-old suspect whom we believe to be responsible for a series of murders whose victims were all women.

We can confirm that seven bodies have already been recovered from different locations under Seshego, Polokwane and western policing areas. The suspect is being charged with murder, rape, defeating the ends of justice and robbery.

One of the man’s victims was identified as Sarah Mothiba (42) who was last seen leaving home for work in Polokwane on the 18th of last month. The suspect reportedly demanded R2 500 ransom from the Mothiba family at Ga-Chuene, promising to release Sarah. Family spokesperson Violet Rakoma-Mothiba says:

We are unable to accept what happened, he tricked us and made us pay ransom money promising to release Sarah. He stole cash that Sarah had, withdrew her money at the bank and made the family pay ransom money and ended up killing her.

We are hurt, justice must prevail. He must disclose the names of the people he was working with; I don’t believe he was alone in this crime. I hope the police can also help to make him disclose the names. The suspect, who is facing multiple charges, is expected to appear before the Seshego Magistrate’s court on Monday.

50 MDC Alliance members arrested in Mabvuku. In a statement, the MDC Alliance said those who were arrested were detained at Mabvuku Police Station. The party said: This afternoon, [police] violently disrupted our Anniversary celebrations in Mabvuku.

About 50 MDC Alliance supporters were reportedly arrested while several others were injured when police disrupted a party gathering in Mabvuku on Sunday. More than 50 were arrested and detained at Mabvuku Police Station. Several members and supporters have been badly injured.

In a tweet, MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende also confirmed the arrests and condemned President Emmerson Mnangagwa for allegedly treating the opposition party as if it was a banned organisation. Said Hwende:

Police @PoliceZimbabwe has violently disrupted our meeting in Mabvuku and arrested our supporters. The MDC Alliance is now been treated as a banned Political Party. @edmnangagwa is a scared man he is afraid of the defeat that is visiting him soon. We must not be deterred.

Last week, two MDC-T members, Senators Khalipani Phugeni and Chief Ndlovu were arrested during the party’s voter registration meeting. The party said the arrests clearly illustrates the decaying public space in Zimbabwe and shows that the electoral playing field is uneven.

Govt bans bosses texting employees after-hours

Govt bans bosses texting employees after-hours. The move is part of changes being introduced to improve work-life balance in response to an expansion of working from home in the country.

The Portuguese government has banned bosses from text messaging and emailing staff out of working hours as part of new laws dubbed “right to rest”. Companies that employ more than 10 people could face fines if they contact employees outside their contracted hours. Portugal has also introduced new rules allowing staff with children to work remotely.

Parents will be allowed to work at home indefinitely without seeking prior approval from their employers until their child turns eight. And companies may also have to contribute to higher household bills from being home-based, such as energy and internet costs.

Portugal’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Ana Mendes Godinho, spoke glowingly about “telework” during a conference in Lisbon last week. She also hoped the enhanced labour protections would attract more foreigners to the country. Said Godinho:

We consider Portugal one of the best places in the world for these digital nomads and remote workers to choose to live in, we want to attract them to Portugal. Portugal already has a temporary resident visa scheme designed to attract entrepreneurs and freelancers.

The Portuguese island of Madeira has a “digital nomad village”, with free wifi and office desk facilities. Other countries that have introduced so-called “digital nomad visas”, as opposed to standard tourist permits, include Barbados and Croatia.

RBZ reserve money Update as at 5 November 2021. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has said reserve money increased by ZW$3.91 billion during the week ending 5th November 2021, compared to the previous week’s position. The central bank said in a statement:

1. Reserve money technically increased by ZW$3.91 billion to ZW$28.27 billion during the week ending 5th November 2021, compared to the previous week’s position of ZW$24.36 billion.

2. The increase in reserve money was necessitated by an increase of ZW$8.77
billion in required reserves, following the increase in statutory reserve requirement ratios. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of 28th October 2021 raised the statutory reserve ratio on demand and call deposits from 5% to 10% to reduce money supply.

3. Partially offsetting the increase was a decrease of ZW$4.78 billion in banks ’liquidity (RTGS balances) at the Central Bank, through issuance of open market operations (OMO) instruments.

Horror as Gokwe man r@pes and impregnates 14-year-old daughter. The man from Chamunorwa Village under Chief Mkoka, whose identity has not been revealed to protect his victim, r@ped his daughter several times until she fell pregnant. He recently appeared before Gokwe regional magistrate, Lungile Ncube and was convicted and sentenced to 18 years.

A man from Gokwe South District, Midlands Province, has been slapped with an 18-year jail sentence for raping and impregnating his teenage daughter. Four years were, however, suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecutors told the court that on an unknown date, but during the period from September 2019 to December 2020, the accused unlawfully had s.e.xual intercourse several times with his biological daughter aged between 14 and 16 without her consent. The State outline read:

Accused person is complainant’s biological father. On a date unknown but during the month of September 2019, the complainant and her sister were left in the custody of the accused person while the mother went to Johanne Masowe Apostolic Church.

The State alleged that at night the man went into his daughter’s bedroom and raped her. The prosecutor, Kennedy Madekutsikwa told the court that when the man’s wife returned home from the church service on the following day, the girl revealed the matter to her.

She, however, did not believe her story and instead threatened to assault her alleging that she was lying against her husband. As a result, she did not take any action. In September 2020, the girl got pregnant and she informed her mother who again, did not take any action.

The court further heard that despite the complainant being pregnant her father continued having sexual intercourse with her until December last year. The matter came to light when other villagers tipped off the police, leading to the arrest of the man.

Chris Mutsvangwa: Mnangagwa is world’s best spy operative

Chris Mutsvangwa: Mnangagwa is world’s best spy operative. Chairman of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA), Christopher Mutsvangwa, said President Emmerson Mnangagwa is perhaps Zimbabwe’s best intelligence officer and his silence doesn’t mean that he is unaware of what is taking place.

Mutsvangwa, who is a Politburo member and husband to Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa, made the remarks on Wednesday at the ZANU PF Mashonaland West provincial coordinating committee (PCC) meeting held in Chinhoyi. His statements come amid reports that some ambitious cadres within the ruling party are plotting to dethrone Mnangagwa. Said Mutsvangwa:

The president is aware of what happens on the ground, even if he keeps quiet it doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what you are doing on the ground.

He is the best intelligence officer himself, which has made Zimbabwe one of the best in the world with many countries and organisations seeking the country’s intelligence services, including the United Nations (UN).

Most intelligence assignments from the ’80s, in and outside the country, were superintended by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. To support his claims, Mutsvangwa said secret service operatives deployed from Zimbabwe were responsible for the demise of the Angolan rebel leader, Jonas Malheiro Savimbi.

Savimbi, a revolutionary politician and rebel military leader founded and led the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and was assassinated on 22 February 2002.

Mutsvangwa also said there were several Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) officers at the ZANU PF meeting who were gathering intelligence for Mnangagwa.

Teachers start #JusticeforTrsZw salary demonstrations. ARTUZ last week gave the government an ultimatum to address their grievances saying they will down tools completely this Monday until the employer has addressed their challenges.

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has started a 12-day salary protest dubbed #JusticeforTrsZw campaign to push the government to restore the US$540 pre-October 2018 salaries.

The protest coincides with learners starting their ZIMSEC examinations. ARTUZ posted an update on the campaign saying the campaign will be there for 12 days. Said ARTUZ:

Day 1 of the #JusticeforTrsZw campaign to #SaveOurEducationZw is a day for youth voices on education. We invite young people, youth organisations and youth-led organisations to help us amplify our call for pre-October 2018 salaries. In these 12 days of action, we target 12 voices for education.

To add your voice send us an audio message on +263776973293. Your messages will be compiled and broadcast. Send a solidarity message to ruraltrsunion@gmail.com the messages will be compiled into a special bulletin to be published. Join the #JusticeforTrsZw on social media.

Teachers have over the past two years embarked on periodic protests over poor salaries and working conditions. They say they are incapacitated to execute their duties and responsibilities.

The government has over the years been reviewing the salaries and also offered non-monetary benefits to cushion its workers from socio-economic bumps. Workers, however, say the efforts by the government are not enough considering the inflationary environment prevailing in Zimbabwe.

Killer Zivhu: I’m a son of ZANU PF. Zivhu was expelled from ZANU PF in June last year after he used social media to urge first lady Auxillia Mnangagwa and MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa’s wife to push for dialogue between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his rival.

Killer Zivhu has reiterated his allegiance to ZANU PF despite numerous failed efforts to bounce back in the ruling party. He subsequently lost his Chivi South National Assembly seat but has vowed not to contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming by-elections in the constituency.

Zivhu also pledged to support President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s so-called Vision 2030. He said: For this coming by-election, I can’t stand against the party that looked after me from 1994.

I am very sorry to disappoint so many people but as of development, we will continue complimenting the President’s Vision 2030. I am a son of Zanu PF, you can’t change your surname just because the father has chased you away.

You must wait and see why he did that then come back at the right time. I am still young, and I hope to bounce back and contest in the same party. Zivhu was Chivi Rural District Council (RDC) council chairperson before he contested and won the Chivi South constituency.

His popularity was reportedly his downfall as ZANU PF provincial chairperson Ezra Chadzamira’s faction recommended his expulsion.

Master KG sued over Jerusalema

$

Master KG, is facing plagiarism charges after being accused of ripping off the hit song from Ntimela Chris Chauke.

This comes after Charmza the DJ has taken the Jerusalema hitmaker over claims he is the one who produced the hit song and stole his song.

According to a letter of demand from Chauke’s lawyers, Adams & Adams, in which he is calling for Moagi to apologize publicly for the copyright infringement and credit him as the producer of the global hit. Chauke, popularly known as Charmza the DJ, is also demanding full compensation of all monies due to him.

“Around 19 August 2019, our client, Charmza the DJ, was invited telephonically by Master KG to visit his recording studio in Midrand to produce a track for female vocalist Nomcebo.

“Our client travelled from his home in Limpopo and during the recording session at Master KG’S studio, he originated, authored, composed, and produced the original musical composition for the song that Master KG and Open Mic Productions later released commercially under the title Jerusalema. Our client authored the original melody of the composition, the beats and the arrangement of the song, melody and vocals,” said the letter.

According to the letter Master KG did not contribute any creative input to the composition and was not present in the studio at the time that the vocals were recorded and arranged, and for the majority of the time when the song was produced.

“Our client returned to his home in Limpopo and expected that if Master KG decided to commercially release the song, he would be credited as the producer, and that Master KG would first negotiate appropriate rights clearances with our client as the copyright owner of the composition before any commercial release of the song occurs. Our client was surprised to learn that Master KG simply proceeded to release the song commercially, through his record label at the time, Open Mic Productions, without contacting our client and without obtaining the required rights clearances for the use of our client’s copyright-protected music and musical composition. Our client did not transfer any rights of copyright through written agreement or otherwise and remains vested with all rights of copyright in the composition.”

When the track was released, Chauke said he called Moagi and Open Mic Production. He said they promised to have a meeting with him.

“He believes because he didn’t have the financial resources and knowledge, and because he lived in Tzaneen, Open Mic and Moagi never dreamt he would be able to get legal help. Chauke, responsible for King Monada’s biggest hits, feels the law should now take its course.”

Lionel Jamela of Open Mic Productions said: “The claim is fabricated. If they believe that they have a legitimate claim, they are welcome to approach the courts.”

Charmza the DJ said: “We are approaching the courts because there is more than enough evidence to substantiate all the claims. What is even sadder is that they refuse to even meet to discuss this.

Zimbabwe acquires 20 million Covid-19 doses

Zimbabwe acquires 20 million Covid-19 doses. With 6 154 516 jabs given by Saturday evening there are obviously enough supplies to keep Zimbabwe going for some time, even with unavoidable wastage from dropped vials and the like, and it is now up to the people to line up at vaccination points.

Zimbabwe has acquired a total of 20 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine, enough for almost 10 million people, a development that places the country among the top rated countries in procuring Covid-19 supplies according to the International Monetary Fund and the World Health Organisation.

The move will go a long way in fighting the pandemic, especially after the Government recently directed that children aged 16 and 17 be vaccinated. Sinovac was the first vaccine readily available in Zimbabwe to be approved for teenagers.

Officiating at the recent Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation celebrations, Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube extended gratitude to the Indian government for its support for Zimbabwe in the fight against Covid-19.

“You may be aware that the Government has in response to the Covid-19 pandemic spent over US$140 million towards acquisition of vaccines. Our target is 20 million vaccines and we are good as done. We have reached that target already,” he said.

“Some of these vaccines of course are coming through the African Union Facility and we agreed to about 7 million doses and we have since paid the deposit for these vaccines,” he said.

With health experts being on record that the pandemic has not yet been defeated as its threat continues to hover perilously, vaccination is critical to defeat the Covid-19 although other public health measures will need to be continued.

Minister Ncube noted that the City of Victoria Falls, the country’s biggest tourism destination, had reached its vaccination target. “We have over-performed, exceeded herd immunity target,” he said.

Minister Ncube also acknowledged the support extended to the people of Zimbabwe by the Government of India in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic particularly the donation of 75 000 Covid-19 vaccine doses.

“The government of India has also donated medicines and ambulances in support of this cause. The ambulances are being distributed across the country to various provinces,” he said.

Zimbabwe has approved and is using a number of vaccines on its populations including, Sinopharm and Sputnik-V. But with the present results and local recommendations, only Sinovac has so far been exclusively recommended to the 16 and 17-year-olds.

In a recent comprehensive joint database to track the number of Covid-19 vaccines secured through different channels, IMF and WHO gave Zimbabwe a rating of around 98 percent for its efforts that have seen payments already made for around 85 percent of the vaccines needed for the national programme.

VP Chiwenga opens nursing school, clinic in Chivhu. Vice President and Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Constantino Chiwenga opened the two facilities yesterday. The training school is only the third such academic facility on the continent after South Africa and Egypt, and the opening of the facilities immediately got the endorsement of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Government has officially opened the Accident and Emergency Nursing School in Chivhu, and Pimbi Clinic here in line with the Second Republic’s thrust of configuring its human resource towards the attainment of an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

VP Chiwenga first opened Pimbi Clinic, about 30 kilometres from Chivhu town along the Harare-Masvingo Highway, a former farmhouse at the then Philisdale Farm that has now been converted to a rural clinic. Speaking after officially opening the clinic, he said he was determined to see the facility grow into an established health centre.

“I am happy with the work that was done here in converting this farmhouse to be a clinic, and we will support this facility to give excellent services,” he said. “I have brought 10 beds to be used for maternity purposes and we want to have surgery services here to cater for emergency services, and also a resident doctor.”

VP Chiwenga also talked about the massive infrastructure developments across sectors being done by the Government. “A country is developed by its own citizens,” he said.

“If you look at this road (Harare-Beitbridge Highway), it is being built by the Government. President Mnangagwa said Zimbabwean companies should do the restoration of these roads and local companies are up to the task.”

VP Chiwenga emphasised the importance of improving local capacities which is being championed by the President Mnangagwa.

Endorsing the candidature of President Mnangagwa as the Zanu PF presidential candidate for the 2023 harmonised elections, VP Chiwenga talked about the milestones done by the Second Republic under the stewardship of President Mnangagwa.

From Pimbi Clinic, VP Chiwenga proceeded to Chivhu General Hospital where he opened the Accident and Emergency Nursing School located at the hospital. He had a chance to greet the group of pioneering students at the new school and implored them to work hard so that everyone passes the training course.

WHO country representative Dr Alex Gasasira, who was also in Chivhu, endorsed the developments in the health sector in an interview saying: “All these actions are increasing access to care closer to where the services are needed, and this is very commendable indeed.

“We need to continue supporting the Government to ensure that the services are of the highest possible quality, through ensuring that the health workers get trained and having whatever they need to deliver services.”

The opening of Pimbi Clinic is in line with the Government’s quest for universal health coverage of leaving no one behind in the access of healthcare services.

While the nursing school in Chivhu will equip graduates with emergency services specialities, it is not occurring in isolation, but is part of a broader vision to prepare the health services towards delivering best international practices.

The institution, which will train among other things, organ harvesting for the purposes of transplant, will be key in the provision of emergency services and the specialist training for nurses is also aimed at equipping the ambulance services with specialist personnel.

It will be a three year advanced accidents emergency nurses diploma and is unique in that the curriculum will thoroughly train students to confront emergencies and tight situations.

Mzansi’s favourite choreographer, Somizi Mhlongo, is once again having his love life scrutinized. Listen, his fans just want him to be happy. They butt into his business because they mean well… for the most part, that is. He deserves to be happy, doesn’t he?

But a few weeks back, rumours started flying around of Somizi and Vusi being a couple – again. Vusi addressed the allegations, saying that he and Somizi have been friends for 16 years, but there’s nothing more than that. In fact, he was very offended that people would suggest that he was the reason Somizi and his estranged husband, Mohale Motaung, were having issues in their marriage.

Vusi has also recently been suspected to be dating comedian Lasizwe Dambuza after photos emerged online of the two of them looking cute and cozy together. Lasizwe said the two of them were just Bible study friends, but it still remains unclear whether they were joking or being serious. Either way, fans were convinced that Lasizwe was completely smitten in those photos, and warned him that it would end in tears.

Anyway, the two have posted a photo of them looking great together once again, and the rumour mill is back up. While at this point, it is becoming clear to everyone that they are, truly, just friends as they say, it has not stopped fans from shipping them anyway. We understand why, though, because just look at this picture. Doesn’t it scream “couple goals”?

Zimbabwe to import 400MW to bridge power deficit

Zimbabwe to import 400MW to bridge power deficit. This comes as Zimbabwe, blighted by long periods of load-shedding, is spending up to US$20 million of scarce forex on power imports every month, Zesa executive chairman Sydney Gata revealed.

State power utility, Zesa Holdings, intends to import up to 400 megawatts from Mozambique and Zambia as part of measures to end a debilitating power crisis, a senior executive said.

Dr Gata said in an interview this week Zimbabwe was importing between 200-400 megawatts from the region and partly blamed the scenario on delays by the Treasury to sign an independent power producer (IPP) implementation agreement.

The agreement would have expedited development of IPP projects, which reportedly have significant output potential. In fact, Dr Gata contends Zimbabwe should, at the very least, be exporting excess power.

Demand for power in Zimbabwe reaches about 2 200 MW, especially during winter peak, but the country can at best only produce roughly 1 400MW due to limited installed capacity and unreliable facilities.

The gap between demand and supply is now being minimised through imports, which sees the country part ways with over US$20 million each month, and load shedding, which usually stretches for 12 hours a day.

Dr Gata said 20-35 percent of electricity imported by Zimbabwe from both Zambia and Mozambique, came from IPPs while the sector’s contribution to domestic generation in Zimbabwe stood at a meager 1,5 percent. “This is the lowest I have ever come across anywhere in the world,” Dr Gata said.

“We are importing because the Government (Ministry of Finance) has been sitting on an implementation agreement for IPPs for over two years now, we should not be importing.” Efforts to get a comment from Minister Ncube and secretary for finance George Guvamatanga were not successful by the time of going to print on Friday.

Asked how the agreement the Treasury has not signed could help end the rolling power cuts engulfing the entire country, he said, it was critical for State guarantees project developers needed to source outside funding.

The Zesa executive chairman said licensed IPPs in Zimbabwe had potential to generate 6000MW, of which there was a realistic possibility 600MW could easily be actualised.

This amount, Dr Gata said, was more than the country needed to secure adequate supply and do away with expensive imports, which are gobbling huge amounts of the forex industry desperately requires. Zimbabwe’s domestic currency is failing to hold stead against the greenback on the black market due to limited US dollar availability, which drives speculation that hurts the economy.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe runs a weekly auction system, a major source of affordable forex, and is saddled by a nearly US$200 million backlog resulting from shortages of hard currency. Dr Gata said the state power utility had since taken measures to dilute the impact of the power deficit by seeking imports from EDM of Mozambique and ZESCO of Zambia.

“We are going to get 400 MW from Zambia, Mozambique and repairs currently underway at Kariba South, which should be completed in December,” Dr Gata told Business Weekly.

He indicated that Zesa had negotiated for 280 MW from Zambia and 180 MW from Mozambique, where the country will soon start getting power after once it has cleared outstanding payment for earlier supplies. Zimbabwe’s major power generation facilities are the 1 050MW Kariba South power station, a hydroelectricity plant and the 900MW rate Hwange Power Station, which is fired with coal.

While Kariba South has some challenges firing at full throttle due to limited water availability after two consecutive years of drought, Hwange frequently breaks down due to its old age.

HPS, which was completed in the mid 80s, has outlived its design lifespan, which reduced its reliability and output potential and averages just about 450MW when operating at full potential.

The Government has since enlisted Sinohydro of China to undertake capacity expansion to add 600 MW at Hwange. The project, slowed down by Covid-19 restrictions globally, has reached 72 percent completion and will connect to the grid by the end of 2022.

Notably, Zesa has seen little progress on planned refurbishments of its small thermals in Bulawayo, Munyati and Harare, which can generate an average of 100 MW individually.

The Government of Zimbabwe is also working with Zambia on the development of the Batoka Gorge project, which could add 1 200 MW to the grid from generators on the Zimbabwean side.

Parties to the deal have now completed feasibility and environmental impact review and are now working on fundraising for the project.

Both countries entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of the project in February 2012. The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group was named as the lead financier and co-ordinator for the $5,2 billion project in April 2017.

Construction activities on the project are expected to be started after reaching financial closure in 2019, while commissioning is expected after 2024. The bi-national project is expected to create approximately 6 000 employment opportunities.
