Parents of the girl who fell into a coal ash disposal site speak out. The girl, Alisha Mazwiti from Makwika village, had gone to the bush with her siblings where they intended to relieve themselves when she fell into the underground coal fire. The victim sustained severe burns on both legs.

The parents of an eight-year-old girl from Hwange who accidentally fell into a coal ash disposal site belonging to the Hwange Colliery Company (HCC) resulting in her sustaining life-threatening burns say their daughter is battling for life at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo.

The girl’s mother, Mrs Ethel Yenzani Ncube said the incident occurred on Monday afternoon. She narrated: I left my two children including Alisha in the custody of my younger sisters as I went to take a bath. After finishing, I discovered that Alisha was not in the house and later learnt that they had gone to a nearby bush with my 16-year-old sister to relieve themselves since we have a challenge of water in Hwange.

Mrs Ncube said she later heard her daughter’s friend who had accompanied them to the bush screaming saying Alisha had fallen into an underground coal fire. Mrs Ncube said she alerted her husband who rushed to the scene and took the child to the hospital. She added:

I was terrified and followed my husband to the colliery hospital where my daughter was put on drip before she was later transferred to St Patricks Hospital. She said they were told to buy jelly which was supposed to be applied to the burns. They sourced US$200 which they used on an ambulance that took their daughter to Bulawayo.

Mrs Ncube said the family was now struggling to raise money for the medical requirements and is appealing for assistance. She added: We are now appealing for money to meet the medical costs and anyone willing to assist can contact us on 0785 437 185 or send money via Ecocash on that same number.

Mpilo Central Hospital acting chief executive office Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said the injuries were life-threatening. He said escharotomy (a surgical procedure used to treat full-thickness circumferential burn) to relieve pressure in the lower limbs has been done while further treatments and procedures may be necessary.

Thigh vendor arrested after stealing and crashing client’s car. The Chronicle reports that Mr Trust Ndlovu allegedly picked up a 23-year-old Cwebisile Hlengiwe Moyo in the city centre on Tuesday last week and the two agreed to spend the night together at a city lodge.

A s.e.x worker has been arrested in Bulawayo after stealing and crashing her client’s car into a pre-cast wall in Hillside. They booked a room at a lodge along Lobengula Street between Connaught and Masotsha Ndlovu avenues.

Ndlovu said he parked his car outside the lodge and the two retired for the night only to wake up around 5 am to find Moyo gone with his car. He tried phoning Moyo but her number was unreachable. Ndlovu made a report to the police at around midday and they tracked Moyo to her flat in town.

She told police that the car had crashed into a pre-cast wall in the Hillside suburb. Contacted for comment, Ndlovu said he did not hire Moyo but he knows her. He said:

The issue has gone out of hand. I don’t know what to do. I know Cwebesile, I did not hire her, but she indeed took my car. She has been arrested and this whole thing is a mess.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed that Moyo was arrested. He said Moyo sold Ndlovu’s goods worth about US$7 500 that were in the car.

Over 600 girls aged 9 or 10 gave birth in 2020. According to Statistics South Africa, 899 303 babies were born in 2020, and of those 34 587 were born to girls aged 17 and younger. Said Stats SA:

Of the 34 587 births from teen mothers, 16 042 were aged 17, while 688 were [9 and] 10 years young. Early pregnancy and motherhood in South Africa create a greater risk in terms of maternal complications, resulting in low survival rates of babies, and forces many girls to prematurely take on an adult role that they are not emotionally or physically prepared for.

Statistics for the recorded live births in 2020 were released on Thursday, showing that 1 003 307 births were registered in South Africa. Stats SA said information about the fathers remained the biggest challenge. Said Stats SA:

In 2020, no reliable information on fathers could be provided due to a high proportion of births (more than 60%) being registered without details of fathers.

Section 10 of the Births and Deaths [Registration Act] prohibits unmarried fathers to have (sic) their information on the birth certificate of a child, which contributes to the high number of births with no information on fathers.

Stats SA said this is expected to change in the coming years as in September 2021, the Constitutional Court ruled that this section of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act is unconstitutional.

This means unmarried fathers can now have their information registered in the birth certificate of their children at the Department of Home Affairs.

Zimbabweans worsened things by taking Ramaphosa to court over permits. David  Hamadziripi said there had been diplomatic manoeuvres to end the uncertainties, and a decision would be announced by the South African government. The special permits were last renewed in 2017, and are due to expire at the end of this year making the future of about 250 000 Zimbabweans on special permits uncertain.

Harare’s top diplomat in Pretoria, David Hamadziripi, Zimbabwean migrants worsened an already tense situation by dragging President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration to court over special work permit renewals.

South African nationals recently demonstrated against the extension of the special permits, while Zimbabwean migrants on the special permits took Pretoria to court, pressing the government to declare them permanent residents. Hamadziripi told the Zimbabwe Independent:

In this case, the current permits expire at the end of next month,” Hamadziripi said. “The process has always been that the South African cabinet decides whether to renew or not. The last time they were renewed was in 2017. Their term is five years. They are due to expire in 2021. The point is that it is a decision that is actually taken by the South African cabinet.

What has infuriated some South Africans is that we have some permit holders who have now gone to the courts asking them to direct the South African government to grant them permanent residency.

Some of these people have been holding them (special permits) for a period long enough for them to qualify for permanent residency. But because they have these special permits, they don’t qualify and cannot be granted permanent residency.

Pretoria has come under fierce criticism from its nationals, who last week tried to force the Ramaphosa administration to change tack.

#NoToZimWorkPermits campaign and #PutSouthAfricansFirst activist and march convenor Tshidiso Rantsa has said the push is to make sure opportunities that were taken by Zimbabweans are returned to South Africans.

Other African nationals also hold the permits. Hamadziripi said anxiety was building up because of delays by the South African government on the processes for the renewal of the permits.

He added that according to South African immigration laws, these Zimbabweans had stayed in the neighbouring country long enough to acquire permanent residency.

Stranded lady vanishes with car of a man who offered her transport and accommodation. Police sources say Mr Elliot Mukaro was driving his Toyota Mark 2 around Bulawayo at night on Thursday last week and he went to Queens Sports Club to drink at Boundary Nightclub.

A “stranded” Bulawayo woman last week Friday vanished with a car of a man who offered her transport and accommodation. At around 3 AM on Friday, Mukaro reportedly met a woman by the name of Thuba, who was in the company of three unidentified men.

After some drinks, the woman approached Mukaro and asked him to take her to Nkulumane where she lives.

However, Mukaro pointed out that his car was low on fuel and would not make it to Nkulumane. Thuba offered Mukaro US$5 for fuel and he then agreed and the three men she was with disappeared as the couple drove around the city centre looking for fuel.

They could not find the fuel, and Mukaro is said to have suggested that he could take Thuba to his house in the Emakhandeni suburb to sleep till it was safe to travel.

When they got to Mukaro’s house at around 5 AM, it is alleged that he left his car keys on a table in the living room and Thuba sat on a chair there. Mukaro retired to his bedroom and slept and woke up at around 11 AM only to discover that Thuba had vanished with his car. He then made a report at Entumbane Police Station and his car has not been recovered.

Earlier reports had suggested that he is the one who had hired a 23-year-old s.e.x worker – Cwebisile Hlengiwe Moyo – who stole and crashed his car. He refutes the claims. Mukaro visited the Chronicle offices on Tuesday and narrated his story. He said:

My car was stolen on Friday morning. I reported it at around 11 at Entumbane Police Station. I was called to VTS and up to now they haven’t found the car. I was not with a hooker, I was not with anyone and my car is still missing. I arrived home at around 5AM and I just left the keys in the ignition.

When I woke up late I found the car gone. I thought one of my friends had taken the car. After about 30 minutes when nobody showed up, I went to the police to report my case. I live in Emakhandeni and police are still investigating. He added that the only other item that was in the car is his jacket that had US$30.

Speaking to Daily Sun, DJ and businesswoman Lamiez said she was grateful to the show because ever since she joined it four years ago, her life had changed drastically. I have been able to do many things and ticked off many boxes off my bucket list. And outside of the fame that the show has brought into my life, I have been able to change lives. None of this would have happened if it was not for the show,” she said.

Although being on the show brought great change into her life, she shared that there had also been a downside as she was often bullied for her physique.

When there is light, there is always darkness. The biggest change that came with being on the show was people treating me like an object – like I don’t have feelings and they own me. I am not money and not everyone is going to love me. But, there is time when it got hurtful and angered me. However, because I know my power and how special I am, I remain unshaken.”

The Metro FM presenter revealed that when she auditioned for the show, she was the only person who looked different as everyone was skinnier and lighter in complexion than her.

I cried after having made it through the first round as it was overwhelming that I was a step closer to realising my dreams. It felt farfetched, and having made it through all those rounds and to the last one, and reminding myself why I made it that far, was worth celebrating. It was also worth celebrating that being different was my power as that was how I landed the show. I was the change the world desperately needed, and that being different is okay,” she said.

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube explains Civil Servants’ bonuses. In an interview with State media, Ncube said all bonus recipients will be allowed to withdraw their money in cash at their respective banks. He said: It (bonus) is going to be paid into Nostro accounts of civil servants.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube has confirmed that civil servants, civil service pensioners and war veterans will receive their bonuses later this month through bank deposits into their Nostro accounts.

They will be able to withdraw it as cash or transfer it to their cards and use it for purchases or even keep it in their savings accounts.

For pensioners, naturally, their benefits will also be paid in US dollars, even for war veterans, everyone who is on the civil service payroll will receive their bonuses in foreign currency this year.

He explained that the Government decided to pay this year’s bonuses in foreign currency owing to high inflation rates. Said Ncube: We realised as Government that there was pressure from inflation being pushed by the parallel market and inflation was beginning to go up.

Also, there was a call from the civil servants’ leadership that there should be payment of the bonuses in US dollars, so we responded to these two calls. The President had also said let us do it and pay the civil servants in US dollars and we are going to do that for this year’s bonuses.

Last week Finance and Economic Development secretary George Guvamatanga said bonuses will be paid out up to a maximum of US$700 for civil servants while civil service pensioners are set to receive US$100 as bonus payments and an extra US$80 for their spouses and US$60 for their children.

He said civil servants earning more than US$700 will be paid their balances in local currency. It is projected that the Government will fork out US$90 million to pay the bonuses.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is reportedly considering challenging President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the ZANU PF elective congress set for next year.

Meanwhile, Chiwenga’s top business executive ally Caleb Dengu, who has said Mnangagwa is illegitimate and must not run in 2023, last week slipped out of the country for the Netherlands, The NewsHawks reported.

Dengu was reportedly under fire from the President’s supporters who were threatening him with a fierce backlash and financial ruin.

The defeated yet still alive ZANU PF faction, the G-40, is reportedly supporting the move by Chiwenga to challenge Mnangagwa. Chiwenga and G40 strategists are realigning forces within ZANU PF to challenge Mnangagwa head-on next year.

The NewsHawks reported sources within ZANU PF as saying that after Mnangagwa reneged on the deal with Chiwenga prior to the November 2017 military coup to serve only one term and allow his deputy to come in 2023, gloves are now off within the ruling party over unresolved leadership issues. Said the source:

The fallout within the party leadership is serious. We are heading for a battle royale between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga next year. That is how politics within ZANU PF and state institutions is currently shaping up. The unresolved leadership question can no longer be managed and swept under the carpet; it has got to be settled politically, and that means through congress next year.

There is no question of another military coup; well, perhaps a palace coup might happen, but not a putsch. When Mnangagwa took over, there was a clear understanding that he will not seek re-election in 2023.

However, Chiwenga and others were shocked to see him telling the world in an interview in September 2018 during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York that he would seek re-election in 2023. That was never agreed.

During the December 2018 ZANU PF conference at Mzingwane High School in Esigodini, Mnangagwa and his allies moved a gear up and launched a campaign for him to serve two terms, a development that reportedly did not please Chiwenga. Said another source:

At that time, it became clear Mnangagwa had broken ranks and reneged on the deal.

That worsened internal strife and infighting fuelled by the White City grenade attack in June 2018 which most ZANU PF leaders know was an inside job. The 1 August 2018 killings in Harare in broad daylight and January 2019 stay away and the bloodbath that left many dead exacerbated the situation.

The Mnangagwa group is mainly Midlands and Masvingo province-based, while the Chiwenga one has threads cutting across different regions, although its main base has roots in the three Mashonaland provinces — Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West and Harare.

Drama as man shares house with Mutare family for months without being noticed. The man, Tinashe Mlambo’s luck finally ran out of him when he made noises that led to his arrest recently. The matter came to light when he recently appeared before Mutare magistrate, Prisca Manhibi charged with unlawful entry into premises as defined in Section 131 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

A homeless 19-year-old man lived in the ceiling of a house in Hobhouse Suburb, Mutare, without the knowledge of the occupants for almost two months.

Mlambo pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment. However, six months were suspended for the next five years on condition of good behaviour. He will serve eight months in prison.

Prosecuting, Tafadzwa Chiwanza told the court that Mlambo, who is of no fixed aboard, unlawfully entered into the Hobhouse home without permission or authority from the owner, Prosper Zimunya.

She said Mlambo, just like he did in the last two months, gained entry into Zimunya’s house through the garage while the family was watching television.

Zimunya heard some strange sounds from the ceiling and took a ladder to investigate. He checked what was happening, only to find Mlambo hiding in the ceiling. A report was made at Hob House Police Base, and Mlambo was arrested.

Mlambo told the court that he would sneak into the house in the middle of the night to eat before leaving in the wee hours. He said he stole items such as cellphones and chargers without being noticed during his two months’ stay in the ceiling.

AFM factions speak on the shooting incident at Marlborough Church. Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, saying investigations are underway. He said representatives of both church factions later made counter-reports to the police.

Gunshots rang at the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) church in Marlborough on Thursday night as security guards hired by a group led by Reverend Cossam Chiangwa attempted to forcibly take control of the premises from the Reverend Amon Madawo-led group.

The Supreme Court recently upheld a High Court judgement which ruled against Chiangwa, in favour of Madawo, whom the courts recognise as the legitimate leader of the church.

Giving his church’s side of the story, board member in charge of security for Reverend Madawo’s camp, Reggies Nyandoro said: I received a call from one of the security details at church advising me that there were armed men outside the gate.

They wanted him to open the gate so they could guard the church because Pastor Chiangwa had engaged them to do so. I advised the guard to alert his Control Office and to call ZRP Marlborough.

He said after about 10 minutes the guard called him, advising that the armed men were now agitated and threatening to shoot him. Said Nyandoro: I asked him to put me on speakerphone and spoke to one of the gun-wielding men. I asked him his name and he refused to divulge it.

He shouted that they had been engaged by Reverend Chiangwa to guard his church and that I should ask the guard to open the gate. He continued to insist on getting the gate opened and I asked our guard to terminate the call. I later heard that they fired gunshots.

Contacted to give his side of the story on Saturday, Chiangwa referred questions to his deacon Thomas Gwatidzo who was at the scene of the incident. Gwatidzo said:

The matter is currently under police investigation, so I do not want to give too much information that could jeopardise investigations or give ammunition to the other party (Reverend Madawo’s group).

I think it is best to leave the matter in the hands of the police for now. All I can say is that this is a small matter. No one was harmed. I think you also understand that it is legal to fire warning shots if one is under attack.

Saviour Kasukuwere links trigger ZANU PF witch hunt. Mnangagwa’s hounds have reportedly launched a witch-hunt in the ruling party with some officials now being targeted for allegedly backing Tyson’s plot.

Kasukuwere, who was known as Tyson during his heydays in ZANU PF, was singled out by the ruling party in an opposing affidavit in the case where a party member Sybeth Musengezi wants Mnangagwa’s ascendancy after the 2017 coup declared illegal.

Reports claiming that exiled former ZANU PF political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere is plotting a political comeback to challenge President Emmerson Mnangagwa has triggered a commotion within the ruling party.

ZANU PF claims Musengezi was planted by Kasukuwere as part of factional wars in the party. Tafadzwa Mugwadi, the ZANU PF director of information, alleged that some party officials are pretending to be loyal to Mnangagwa yet they are working with Kasukuwere. Said Mugwadi:

I exposed that and I wouldn’t want to speak much, but what should be known is that the hallmark of ZANU PF when going for elections, it sheds off the jetsam and flotsam and anything that is meant to cause commotion and confusion and works on the basis of the willing and devout patriots. ZANU PF has a way of exposing such in dealing with errant elements.

What we know is they have been up to attacking government officials, government departments, and senior leadership and of course there was suspicion and that suspicion has been confirmed by what they are doing.

This will not derail our plans ahead of 2023 and if you look at the numbers, there are just three or four elements causing confusion.

ZANU PF acting spokesperson Mike Bimha said those supporting Kasukuwere were not genuine party members. He said: Anyone can post anything on social media and cannot be stopped but I doubt if the people you refer to are genuine party cadres.

Indian minor r@ped by 400 men in 6 months. The victim is now two months pregnant following the incident and the Child Welfare Committee is in the process of aborting the baby. A case has been registered against nine persons in Ambajogai rural police on the complaint of the victim and four accused have been arrested by the police.

In a shocking incident that occurred in a city called Beed, in the central region of Maharashtra state in India, a minor married woman was raped by more than 400 people in six months after she was promised a job.

The victim’s mother died two years ago and her father arranged a marriage for her. The victim then went to stay at her in-laws’ place for one-and-a-half years after she got married.

However, due to repeated harassment by her father-in-law, the girl returned to her family. A few days after returning to her mother’s place, the girl reached Ambejogai town in search of a job where she met two people from the academy.

The men allegedly raped her, by promising to give her a job. For the next six months, she was repeatedly raped by more than 400 different people. Following the abuse, the victim said is now 20 weeks pregnant in her reply to the Child Welfare Committee.

She said she had lodged a rape complaint at Ambejogai city police but the police did not take any action. Instead, the victim said in her reply that the police on duty at that time took her to the lodge and r@ped her.

The incident of rape by the police itself has created a stir. Beed District Superintendent of Police R Raja has ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Farmers engage the government over inputs prices. Agriculture, Lands, Water, Fisheries and Rural Resettlement Minister Dr Anxious Masuka assured farmers that government will engage seed producing firms and corrective action would be taken. Speaking at the farmer’s annual conference in Gweru following recent price hikes of inputs, Masuka said:

The government is set to engage seed-producing firms after farmers engaged authoto protect farmers against the recent unilateral price increases of inputs.

Government is looking into the issue because we are targeting yet another bumper harvest so inputs should be affordable for our farmers. Zimbabwe Farmers Union Secretary General Paul Zakariya said affordability of inputs was an essential factor in farming. His remarks were echoed by agronomist Tawanda Mangisi who said:

The prices of inputs have to be affordable for us to have more people taking up farming. If prices are affordable it will mean more yields for the country.

Government is targeting another bumper harvest this season, following a historic yield in maize production recorded from the 2020-2021 farming season. Authorities attribute the good harvests to good rains and farming strategies like Pfumvudza/Intwasa employed last season.

ZAOGA University bars students for failing to speak in tongues. The students were reportedly barred from contesting for positions in the Student Executive Council (SEC) on grounds that they cannot speak in tongues and are not “spirit-filled” to lead students.

Five students at the Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU) have dragged the ZAOGA-FIF-run institution to the High Court for alleged discrimination.

In their High Court application, the students named ZEGU as the first respondent, its registrar Innocent Chinyemba the second respondent while dean of students Zacharia Zunguze is the third respondent.

The five students are Modester Zinhanga (presidential candidate), Godcares Nyereyemhuka (vice president), Trish Chimanda (secretary-general), Chris Zindi (Minister of Finance) and Obedience Mupezeni (Minister of Religion and Gender).

According to court papers, the five went through all processes that included nomination and interviews handled by Zunguze. Zunguze later communicated that they had all been disqualified based on a section in the institution’s student handbook, amended this year.

The five are being represented by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum. The court papers read: Zunguze received my application and facilitated interviews on the 3rd of November 2021.

I successfully participated in the interviews, which were presided over by Zunguze on behalf of the university. On the 5th of November 2021 around 1500hours, Zunguze issued communication disqualifying my candidature together with a few other candidates.

Zunguze insists that the decision to disqualify me is based on Section 9 of the students’ handbook which states that I am not a member of ZAOGA, that I failed to show evidence of speaking in tongues and that I am not born again and spirit-filled.

These requirements are claimed to have been introduced by the new students’ handbook 2021 Edition under Section 9.

However, this is contrary to what has been the tradition and practice in previous elections, elections have always been governed by the Students Executive Council constitution.

In September this year, ZEGU published a dress code that bars women from wearing “inappropriate clothing” on campus which include skins tights, mini-skirts and see-through.
