Jordan Zemura: Can’t wait to join the boys and represent my country. The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed that Zemura will join the rest of the squad on Wednesday.

Bournemouth utility player, Jordan Zemura, is expected to arrive in Cameroon on Tuesday night after missing the Warriors’ opening Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals 0-1 loss to Senegal on Monday. Said ZIFA:

Zemura arrives in Cameroon tonight. He is expected in Bana tomorrow. The Warrior delayed joining the team due to Covid-19 related issues. The 22-year-old also expressed optimism ahead of joining camp. Zemura wrote on Twitter:

Can’t wait to join the boys and represent my Zimbabwe. We have two important games to get out of the group, everything is possible. Zimbabwe plays Malawi next and hopes to secure three points to enhance chances of progressing to the last 16.

Prisoners demand to vote, case set to be heard in High Court

Prisoners demands to vote, case set to be heard in High Court. Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights who are representing the prisoners said the application was filed in June 2017.  The High Court is set to hear a case in which prisoners are demanding to be allowed to vote. Below is ZLHR’s update on the case:

ZIM COURT HEARS PRISONERS DEMAND TO VOTE
HIGH Court Judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi will on Tuesday 25 January 2022 preside over the hearing and determination of an application filed by some prisoners seeking an order compelling Zimbabwean authorities to allow them to vote during elections.

In the application which was filed in June 2017, but is being heard now after the presiding Judge Justice Clement Phiri passed on in January 2021 after reserving judgment in July 2018, the prisoners want the High Court to issue an order compelling Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Hon. Ziyambi Ziyambi, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba and ZEC as the elections management body, to register them on the national voters roll and facilitate their voting on election day.

The prisoners, Yvonne Musarurwa, Tungamirai Madzokere and Last Maengahama, who have since been released from Chikurubi Female Prison and Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, and are represented by Advocate Tererai Mafukidze, instructed by Jeremiah Bamu of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, argued that since the period that they had been in prison detention from 2011, ZEC had neither carried out any voter education, including voter registration nor enabled prisoners to vote during the several general and by-elections which were held in Zimbabwe.

Musarurwa, Madzokere and Maengahama argued that they were asserting their constitutional rights particularly the right to vote in elections and referendums as enshrined in Section 67 (3) (a) of the Constitution. They argued that they are entitled to exercise their political rights regardless of their status as detainees.

Warriors’ midfielder Madzongwe apologies: I wish i could reverse it

Warriors’ midfielder Madzongwe apologies: I wish i could reverse it. The Warriors had kept the Lions of Teranga for over 90 minutes and the game seemingly headed for a draw when a goal-bound shot hit the arm of a diving Madzongwe and the referee pointed to the spot.

Zimbabwe Warriors’ midfielder Kelvin Madzongwe has apologised to the nation for his injury-time handball that gave Senegal a penalty in their Group B Africa Cup of Nations encounter on Monday afternoon.

Madzongwe protested but the referee’s decision was confirmed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Liverpool star Sadio Mane sent an impressive Petros Mhari the wrong way. A few seconds after resuming the match, the referee blew the final whistle, much to the affliction of the Warriors fans. Madzongwe later said:

Mistakes happen in football, but this one really affected me badly. Had it not been for the penalty, we could be having a point from our opener or even a win, but all that is now just wishes. I am extremely sorry to my teammates and coaches, but more importantly to the nation.

It’s no use trying to argue that the decision was a bit harsh as I was looking the opposite direction. Once again, my sincere apologies. I wish I could reverse what happened.

He said they will now fight tooth and nail to get maximum points against Malawi on Friday so that they better their chances of qualifying to the round of 16.

If the Norman Mapeza-led boys put up the same performance they did against Senegal, they may write their own piece of history by progressing to the next round for the first time in their history.

Meanwhile, fans are worried about the strike force which seemed to be on holiday. Some are lamenting over Khama Billiat’s absence.

I got married to my husband because of his big MANH00D but now it’s too much for me

I got married to my husband because of his big MANH00D but now it’s too much for me. In the post she shared, the anonymous woman said she decided to marry a man with a big dxck because when her parents were alive, her mother always quarreled with her father for not satisfying her in bed and even threatened to divorce him.

A lady has taken to social media to share her innermost predicament concerning her marriage. However, she has reached a point where she cannot handle her husband’s big size. Her full post reads; “My name is Chidimma.

I am from Onitsha a very popular city in Anambra state in Eastern Nigeria. I am 23 years old and currently married to a Hausa man from Adamawa state in Northern Nigeria. My parents are no more as they both died in an accident while returning Aba 5 years ago.

When my parents were alive, they always quarrelled over my dad not being man enough to satisfy my mum and I always heard my mum threatening to divorce my dad and get married to another man before the unfortunate accident took them away.

After my parent’s death, I told myself that I am going to get married to a man with manhood good enough to satisfy me so I won’t have the problems my parents had in their marriage.

I met Haruna, my husband during my service year in Adamawa and we fell in love with each other but I had no intention of getting married to him not until a day I mistakenly barged into his room without knocking and I saw him unclad.

I immediately noticed his third leg and told myself I am gonna get married to him just to keep the promise I made to myself years ago.

I and Haruna, promised ourselves not to have any form of intercourse before our marriage and we kept to it strictly. After our wedding, during our honeymoon we have our first intimacy together.

It was good but I am scared because I almost lost my life during the encounter. Please readers advice me on what to do. Should I take the divorce step my mum wanted years ago?”

Jehovah’s Witness member dies after allegedly refusing financial help from a Catholic Church. Ogechukwu Ochiaga had been ill for a while and her story was shared online last year as people begged for donations to help sponsor her medical treatment.

A chef who was a member of Jehovah’s Witness has died allegedly after refusing financial aid from a Catholic Church. One of those who shared her story is a Facebook user known as Bro Can Mbanefo and he begged people to donate any amount they have.

He returned to Facebook today, Jan 11, to reveal that Ogechukwu died yesterday. While announcing her death, he called out Jehovah’s Witness and blamed their doctrine for her death.

He claimed that a Catholic Church in Italy found out about her case and reached out to pay for her surgery. However she allegedly refused to take the money from the Catholic Church as her Church doctrine forbids it.

Mbanefo added that she said she was only willing to accept the money if it comes from a personal account, not from the church. The money was then donated by the church to other sick people. Friends have taken to Facebook to mourn Ogechukwu.

Poet Maya Angelou becomes the first Black woman to appear on US coin

Poet Maya Angelou becomes the first Black woman to appear on US coin. The quarter features an image of Angelou with her arms uplifted, a bird in flight, and a rising sun behind her, with a portrait of George Washington on the “heads” side.

The United States Mint has started distributing quarters featuring the image of Maya Angelou, making the poet and activist the first Black woman to appear on US currency.

The US Mint said the image of Angelou was “inspired by her poetry and symbolic of the way she lived”. The poet and writer, who died in 2014, was the author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, in which she wrote about the racial discrimination she experienced growing up.

Maya Angelou, the author of 36 books and the recipient of more than 20 honorary degrees, read her poem On the Pulse of the Morning at Bill Clinton’s 1992 inauguration, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama in 2010.

“Each time we redesign our currency, we have the chance to say something about our country – what we value, and how we’ve progressed as a society. I’m very proud that these coins celebrate the contributions of some of America’s most remarkable women, including Maya Angelou,” said Janet Yellen, US treasury secretary.

The coins depicting Angelou were part of the American Women Quarters Program, celebrating prominent women in US history. The bill was put forward by Democrat congresswoman Barbara Lee.

“I will forever cherish the private moments I had the privilege to share with Maya, from talking in her living room as sisters to her invaluable counsel throughout the challenges I faced as a Black woman in elected office,” said Lee.

“I am proud to have led this effort to honour these phenomenal women, who more often than not are overlooked in our country’s telling of history. If you find yourself holding a Maya Angelou quarter, may you be reminded of her words, ‘be certain that you do not die without having done something wonderful for humanity.’”

Apple Music announce AWEN as the latest Isgubhu cover star

Apple Music today announced French-Senegalese dance music singer-songwriter and producer, AWEN (real name Lucille Kante) as its latest Isgubhu cover star.

Her debut album Redemption (2021), moves between soulful Afro House and deep spiritual trip hop and features Umlazi-born, self-taught Afro House producer and DJ, Enoo Napa on the title-track “Redemption”. As a frequent collaborator with various Afro House artists from all over Africa, AWEN’s incorporation of multiple genres and sonic elements into her music is testament to her constant growth and ongoing journey.

AWEN has also created an exclusive Isgubhu playlist that features tracks that fuel her musical fire and that showcase Africa’s rich dance music talent through the years.

“I had great fun curating the Isgubhu playlist for Apple Music. I included some timeless classics, such as Tony Allen’s ‘African Man’ just because those tunes paved the way for African dance music as we know it today. I also included some new gems from artists I love and admire such as Black Coffee, Sun El-Musician, Msaki and Black Motion; you will also find a few tunes from my album Redemption. What do all these tracks have in common? They all take from various influences to create a unique form of soulfulness that makes us feel more alive,” she tells Apple Music.

Taking over Isgubhu By… for this month is eSwatini-hailing electronic producer and deep house DJ, !Sooks (real name Sukoluhle Dlamini). Having been enthralled by African music and synth sound creation, !Sooks’ first milestone came when he released his debut EP, 7 Years of Colour (2016) under Antidote Music, quickly following this up with his second release, A Different Place (2016) under international label Deepstitched Records. Since then he’s blazed a unique trail while honing his ambient, moody groove.

“Growing up, my dad exposed me to a lot of amazing music, especially jazz, which inspired my love for music as a whole. This particular selection showcases my love for a variety of sounds within African dance music and it is this plethora of sounds that inspires my music production today. My selection for Apple Music features music from South Africa, Namibia and Eswatini, which to me shows the growth of African dance and electronic music. We have come of age and the sound has moved from the underground scene and has stepped into the mainstream through the advancement of Amapiano, Afro House and other emerging African dance music subgenres,” he explains.

Launched in early 2021, Isgubhu is the definitive home of African Dance and Electronic music on Apple Music and spotlights and elevates the work of African Electronic DJs, producers and creatives. Isgubhu, a Zulu word meaning beat and used to refer to a banging song, pays homage to an evergreen set of genres and the African artists who have played a pivotal role in shaping the Dance and Electronic scene across the world.

Isgubhu also houses a collection of playlists including Spotlight On – a focus on boutique labels like Soul Candi, House Afrika, Stay True Sounds, Uganda’s Hakuna Kulala & Nyege Nyege Tapes, Kenya’s Gondwana KE, and eSwatini’s Antidote Music, as well as Isgubhu Voices – a focus on the best Dance and Electronic tracks that feature vocals.

Suicide rates alarmingly rising in Bulawayo

Suicide rates alarmingly rising in Bulawayo. Official numbers of people ingesting pesticides or overdosing on prescription drugs show a 50 percent increase from last year. The most commonly used parasuicide substance are pesticides, but of late some have been overdosing on TB and antiretroviral medication.

Health experts in Bulawayo have raised concern over the increase in parasuicide cases — suicide attempts where the intention is to draw attention to a personal problem rather than to cause death.

Statistics from Mpilo Central Hospital show that a majority of patients being rushed there for emergency treatment are aged between 14 and 30.

Reasons for attempted suicide range from failed love relationships, disputes over inheritance, economic challenges and general drug abuse. Mpilo Hospital acting chief executive officer Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said in the past five months, parasuicide cases had gone up by 50 percent.

“We have seen a huge increase in parasuicide cases and the sad part is that it involves teenagers as young as 14 years. Sometime last year, we would deal with at most eight cases monthly, but in the past five months, we handled more than 15 cases,” said Prof Ngwenya.

“Some of them die while under our care and although others are treated and put through counselling, an overdose of any drug is detrimental to one’s organs.

Reasons behind these attempts are also shocking as they include love squabbles, failed love relationships, disputes over inheritance and the list goes on.” He blamed the rise in parasuicide cases on family disintegration as people are no longer able to solve their disputes within the family circle.

“Some of the poison includes TB medication or ARVs in large quantities. The most commonly used are pesticides and this is because there is a lot of unregulated sale of pesticides on our streets,” he said.

Prof Ngwenya said the increase in suicide attempts was putting a strain on the already struggling healthcare system being burdened by Covid-19. “We are busy trying to save lives with the limited resources we have, but we see others trying to take their lives; honestly it’s stressful.

We urge members of the public to control their anger and never voluntarily ingest poison for whatever reason because there is more to life than any social problems, they may find themselves in,” he said.

Local psychologist Miss Jacqueline Nkomo said Covid-19 after effects could be fuelling suicide attempts as the pandemic left thousands of people prone to depression. “We cannot divorce the increase of parasuicide cases in Bulawayo from Covid-19 as we know that it has led many into depression.

“The economy too is also affecting many households and with job losses, disruptions in industry etc, people are depressed and without proper social support, they may consider suicide,” said Miss Nkomo. She said families should invest in spending time together and normalise speaking out whenever one is facing challenges.

Miss Nkomo also advised parents to establish healthy relationships with their children, especially teenagers, so that they pick behavioral changes that may lead to suicide attempts.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube blamed suicide attempts on the weak social fabric. “The solution lies in healthy relationships which should be cultivated among parents, cousins, siblings, aunties and uncles.

We should all learn to open up about anything good or bad in the family circle and do activities that help us bond,” said Insp Ncube. “We have noted with concern that we are recording an increase in rape cases by and on juveniles.

People no longer value relationships and the spirt of sisterhood and brotherhood is dead. We also have issues to do with pride where someone thinks they are from a rich family and therefore cannot be heard speaking about social challenges.”

He said parents and teachers should assess the moods of teenagers so that they pick up any mental challenges and attend to them on time.

“Secrets and failure to accept disappointments are also causing increasing these cases, including grief where people fail to understand that death is common and can happen to anyone.

As police, we have a public relations department at every station and we are ever ready to listen to these issues and offer support to distressed members of the community. We also have committed non-governmental organisations helping us address mental health issues,” added Insp Ncube.

Local pastor Sikhumbuzo Dube said churches and spiritual leaders should be deliberate in raising awareness on suicide. “Our problem is that in religious circles we have labelled stress and being low as a sign that someone does not have enough faith.

People are pushed not to open up and encouraged to declare that they are too blessed to be stressed,” said Ps Dube. “So that teaching often makes people not freely open up when they’re in distress or going through challenges socially.

We need to create awareness around suicide so that members of the public are equipped with skills on how to deal with that whenever they find themselves in a position where they have given up on life,” he said. He added that religious leaders should not demonise suicide or merely pray for people with problems, but offer counselling that helps them overcome such thoughts.

AFCON Finals: Norman Mapeza gives Warriors squad a day off

Norman Mapeza gives Warriors squad a day off. The squad just did some recovery exercises and spend the greater part of the day relaxing at their hotel ahead of their Group B second match against Malawi on Friday.

Warriors coach Norman Mapeza gave the squad a day off on Tuesday following the energy-sapping and frustrating 1-0 defeat to Senegal on Monday.

Mapeza, who also doubles as FC Platinum coach, was satisfied with the back four’s performance against Senegal but believes the strikers should have done more with the half-chances that fell their way. He said: Today (yesterday) we have given the team a rest as we just did recovery training.

I thought there were a lot of positives from the game against Senegal (on Monday). Defensively, we did well. I think Petros (Mhari) did very well and you also look at the two centre-backs Gerald Takwara and Teenage Hadebe.

Chimwemwe (Takudzwa) and Bhasera (Onismor), who were also playing in defence, gave a good shift as well, so in terms of the defensive formation, I think we were spot on.

The midfield was also fine, Madzongwe (Kelvin) and Benyu (Kundai) were also impressive and Knowledge (Musona) did well. But, look I have always been telling the players that in modern football, you don’t create too many clear-cut chances.

Instead, you have to fully maximise on the half-chances that you get. We have to work on our conversion rate. We need goals to win matches and I believe we will get it right at the end.

The Senegalese had some tall centre-backs and we didn’t deliver too many crosses as we thought it would lead to loss of possession unnecessarily.

After matching the Lions of Teranga man for man for 94 minutes, the Warriors conceded a last-gasp penalty that was converted by Liverpool forward Sadio Mane.

Update: Minister Mavima crucified Owen Ncube during a 3-hour-long meeting with President Mnangagwa

Update: Minister Mavima crucified Owen Ncube during a 3-hour-long meeting with President Mnangagwa. NewZimbabwe.com reported ZANU PF sources as saying Mavima sought an emergency meeting with Mnangagwa intending to resign from the chairmanship after an aborted Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting in Gweru the day before.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa fired Owen “Mudha” Ncube from the State Security ministerial portfolio following a three-hour-long meeting with newly installed ZANU PF Midlands provincial chairman Larry Mavima at his Pricabe Farm in Kwekwe last Sunday, a report claims.

The meeting was abandoned after Ncube threatened to assault Public Service Minister Paul Mavima and Gokwe Nembudziya legislator Justice Mayor Wadyajena during the proceedings.

Ncube had also bussed machete-wielding thugs to surround the venue of the meeting to intimidate his opponents. During the meeting with Mnangagwa, Mavima (Larry), reportedly said he could not work with Mudha because of his violent tendencies.

Mavima is reported to have told Mnangagwa that numerous provincial leaders were considering leaving the party because of Ncube’s conduct. Said a ZANU PF insider:

What happened is that after the Saturday fiasco at the PCC meeting, some senior ZANU PF members advised Mavhima to go straight to the president and give him a full report of what transpired.

And so on Sunday, he went to the president’s farm and they spent about three hours conversing about the issues. The message he carried to the president was simple and clear: nobody was able to work with Mudha anymore.

So it was a question of either to retain Mudha and risk dismantling the province or sack him and save the situation. Any leader in that situation would decide the way that ED did. You should visit the province and see how excited people are about this development.

In fact, this axe had been hanging over his head since last year when he started deploying some CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation) operatives and machete gangs to harass his rivals in a bid to win the provincial chairmanship position which he wanted.

So basically, the man had the rug proverbially pulled off his feet and when the province decided that Mavhima should be the unopposed chairman, he resorted to fighting for his proxies who were seeking other positions through violence and intimidation.

The situation had become very tricky and the President really faced the inevitable choice of having to fire him. But he was not working alone. He was working in direct consultation with July Moyo, who leads a faction in the province that wants to dominate affairs here.

It will not, therefore, be surprising to see the axe falling on him because he is basically the master controller and these are his runners. Ncube was fired from the Government on Monday for “conduct that was deemed inappropriate for a Minister of Government”.

Report: Zimbabwean teachers stampeding for SA Educators Council certificates

Report: Zimbabwean teachers stampeding for SA Educators Council certificates. The ZEP special permits expired on 31 December 2021, but the South African Government gave the holders, who are estimated to be around 200 000, a grace period of 12 months to apply for other permits.

Hundreds of Zimbabwean teachers who hold the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs) this week applied for the SA Educators Council certificate to avoid deportation from South Africa.

Speaking to NewsDay on Tuesday, Zimbabwe Community in South Africa (ZCSA) chairperson Ngqabutho Mabhena said: This week as schools are opening in South Africa, most teachers (Zimbabwean) are trying to get their SA Educators Council certificates.

Some have submitted their applications and officials from the SA Council of Educators are saying they will sit this week to make a determination on how to handle issues of holders of ZEPs.

So we await the meeting of the SA Education Council this week so that they give guidance on how they are going to proceed because if they do not accept, the permits will expire on December 31, 2022, then we are going to have a crisis.

Reports suggest that over 10 000 Zimbabwean teachers who left the country to seek greener pastures are based in South Africa.

Meanwhile, South African opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, who is considered a Pan Africanist, recently expressed concern over the high number of foreigners employed in South Africa.

In a video clip circulating on social media, Malema said he wanted to know why South African employers in the hospitality industry were employing more foreigners than locals. Said Malema:

We are poor, we are unemployed and we want jobs but if you go to a restaurant, foreigners are working in restaurants, do not hate foreigners, hate the owner of that restaurant because those foreigners did not hire themselves.

We do not fight with our African brothers, we are together, but if I get a tender, the law says you must hire locally. Why is that law not applied in Hilton hotels?

Why is that law not applying in Signature restaurants in Johannesburg? Every hospitality industry must be visited. It’s a programme of the EFF. Do not fight our African brothers and sisters. They did not hire themselves.

ED issued warning before sacking State Security Minister Ncube. In his address during last week’s ZANU Politburo meeting, Mnangagwa threatened to take action against officials fanning factionalism within the party.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa had issued a warning to deal decisively with divisive elements within the ruling party before sacking State Security Minister, Owen Ncube on Monday.

Ncube was fired from the Government for “conduct that was deemed inappropriate for a Minister of Government”, according to a terse statement issued by Mnangagwa’s office.

No specific reason was given for Ncube’s dismissal but it is believed that his sacking had to do with recent disturbances that rocked ZANU PF Midlands provincial structures.

Ncube reportedly hired thugs that disrupted last Saturday’s Provincial Coordinating Committee meeting meant to elect members to fill vacant posts. The meeting was abandoned following disturbances by the thugs without completing its agenda.

Addressing the Politburo meeting held before Ncube’s sacking to endorse provincial chairpersons that won the 28 December provincial elections, Mnangagwa said:

Let me further hasten to say that constitutionalism, unity, peace, harmony and development remain our absolute compass, now and going into the future.

Irregularities and political chicanery across party structures must be decisively dealt with and expunged from the party. I urge the party leadership to always listen to the aspirations of the people at every level.

It is equally important that the party leadership and membership in general work concretely to achieve a better quality of life for our people. It is after all the people who have entrusted us with the mandate to govern over our great country.

SA immigrants crisis update: Zimbabwe must play ball

SA immigrants crisis update: Zimbabwe must play ball. This truth must rise above propaganda churned out by State-controlled media, supporters and apologists of the new dispensation. Irregular migrants arrested along the Beitbridge Border Post have been referred to as criminal elements that need to be dealt with ruthlessly.

At the centre of the immigration crisis that has been making headlines for the past few days in South Africa is the failure by the Zimbabwean government to provide better living standards for its citizens.

These people are not predisposed to criminality as suggested by those wanting to absolve themselves of responsibility for the plight of migrants.

They are fathers, mothers, and children in search of hope for a better future that is free from want. It boggles the mind that Zimbabwe is a country at peace, but it matches countries at war in producing migrants.

A high unemployment rate, poor relations between the government and civil servants, and a collapsed public healthcare system have led to citizens seeking greener pastures elsewhere.

For some professionals, especially those in the medical field, migrating to Europe, Canada, Australia or South Africa is easy as their skills are in demand and employers are prepared to pay top dollar and assist them in relocating.

On the contrary, those without qualifications have limited options at their disposal should they wish to migrate. Many from the latter group have crossed the border to South Africa where they have illegally taken residence.

In 2009, the Cabinet of South Africa approved the Dispensation of Zimbabweans Project to regularise undocumented Zimbabweans and reduce pressure on its asylum system that had become populated with individuals fleeing political persecution and economic mismanagement by Zanu-PF.

It was an appreciated gesture of goodwill that has unfortunately come to an end with the Home Affairs minister Aaron Mostoaledi having recently announced that the special exemption permit would not be renewed.

A grace period of only 12 months was given to allow permit holders to regularise their stay under other visas. The sad reality is that the majority of the exemption permit holders do not meet the requirements of the other visas and they will have to voluntarily return home or risk deportation.

Some will decide to stay and play hide and seek with the police and Department of Home Affairs officials. However, access to basic rights will be difficult.

Negative comments have been passed concerning fellow countrymen caught illegally crossing the border with South Africa and those affected by the termination of the exemption permit I have alluded to.

Indeed, freedom of speech is fundamental in a democracy, but in this case, it should be guided by empathy. With a rising tide of xenophobia, anti-migrant sentiment, and ultra-nationalism in some parts of the world, in the coming years, more Zimbabweans might find their way home.

United, the people of Zimbabwe should work towards a durable solution to the woes they face. That durable solution involves peacefully demanding a decent standard of living from the government and making an informed decision in the 2023 elections.

2 NRZ wagons up in flames. Bulawayo Fire Brigade acting chief fire officer Linos Phiri confirmed the incident yesterday. Two disused National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) wagons caught fire in Bulawayo on Monday.

“We received a call at 6:43pm on Monday that there was a fire at the NRZ materials yard, off Birkenhead Road in Bulawayo. On arrival, we found two disused railway wagons on fire and flames could be seen from a distance. The fire spread from the first to the second wagon, and it almost caught the third wagon,” he said.

“The first wagon was almost completely burnt, indicating that the fire had been burning for a while before being reported.” Phiri said sparks from the grinder used to cut metal is believed to have caused the fire.

NRZ acting spokesperson Martin Banda yesterday confirmed the fire outbreak. “I am advised that Panel Link, which bought scrap metals, were the ones that accidentally started the fire, and they left before they noticed it,” he said.

“The fire then spread and burnt the wagons which they were buying scrap from.”
